Do Americans understand what Roe v Wade actually is?

When asked what they want the court to actually do... 61% believe Roe should be overturned and only 36% believe it should stay the way it is... But when asked specifically about Roe, they come to a different conclusion.

The plurality suggests that 44% want the States to determine their own abortion laws. This is what the USSC decision to overturn Roe would do. 17% believe that Abortion should be illegal everywhere and obviously these people would support the overturning of Roe. Only 36% favor what Roe actually does (which is make Abortion a legal right in every state).

Obviously we also have the Casey ruling, which is what gave us "restriction limits" such as exceptions and the concept that nothing before "viability" could be made illegal. These two rulings have worked together for some time to make abortions available across the nation... at least in most situations.

But if you look at these polls on the surface, it would appear that nearly a third of the people who support Roe, do not understand what they are supporting. These would be the people who statistics tell us both believe it should be up to the states but also do not want Roe overturned (which would leave it up to the states).  So they appear to not really understand the essence of Roe.

This is an issue of rhetoric, fear mongering, and gaslighting. Many people truly believe that if Roe is overturned that abortion will become illegal everywhere and that we will be back to back alley coat hangers. Simply not the case. Do I believe that if Roe is overturned that some states will work to make outlaw it? Probably. But the vast majority of our states will continue to allow it and people have the choice of where they want to live.

The reality is that if the USSC overturns Roe this session, it will make no difference whatsoever to the vast majority of Americans. The only places it will matter will the in the states where the 15 week and fetal heartbeat laws are being enacted. But consider that those laws are very popular in the states where they are passing.

Rather than fucking around pissing and moaning about Alito's potential ruling, the blue states should follow in NY State' footsteps and codify abortion law into their state constitutions.

In my opinion, one of America's very best features is our freedom to vote with our feet and with our wallets.

In a red state with no access to abortion? At a minimum you can drive to a state that will provide abortion access, and better yet you can move there.

This is not and never was about being pro or anti abortion. This is about the 10th amendment. Period. Full stop.

Biden: 'Maga crowd most extreme political organization in US history'

Joe Biden has just been at the podium in the White House, slamming Donald Trump-supporting Republicans as “the most extreme political organization in American history”.

Billed as an economic progress report to tout what he says is a record reduction in the federal deficit, the president wasted no time in attacking “the Maga crowd”, named for Trump’s ‘make America great again’ electioneering slogan.

He slammed Republicans’ economic policies, and saved his fiercest comments for a question on the draft ruling by Republican-appointed judges on the US supreme court seeking to overturn almost half a century of abortion protections, and assaults on LBGTQ+ rights in Republican controlled states.

What are the next things that are going to be attacked? Because this Maga crowd is really the most extreme political organization that exists in American history.

This is about a lot more than abortion... What happens if you have a state change the law, saying that children who are LGBTQ can’t be in classrooms with other children? Is that legit?

Joe Biden speaks at the White House on Wednesday. Photograph: Evelyn Hockstein/Reuters

Biden also laid into “my predecessor” Donald Trump, who failed to reduce the federal deficit at any stage of his single term of office.

It didn’t happen to single quarter under my predecessor, not once. The bottom line is the deficit went up every year under my predecessor before the pandemic and during the pandemic.

And it’s gone down both years since I’ve been here. Period. That’s the facts.

With soaring inflation, and the economy uppermost in voters’ minds ahead of November’s midterms, Biden is keen to showcase his achievements. He said the federal deficit had dropped $350bn in his first in office, and was “on track” for another record $1.5tn drop this year.

But it was his comments on “the Maga crowd” that caught the most attention.

I don’t want to hear Republicans talking about deficits and their ultra Maga agenda. I want to hear about fairness. I want to hear about decency... about ordinary people.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Assuming the decision is handed down and THEN everyone will want to know EXACTLY what it means...

Do you suppose Democrats will get away with lying?

Do you suppose they will just come out and say the truth... that it is not up to the states and that most all states will keep the exactly same laws and it will not affect 95% of Americans?

I might suggest that once people understand the "actual" ramification of the ruling that people will grow to not just accept it but that a majority will come to support it.... as State's rights is an issue growing on both sides recently.

There will be some who will double down on their pro-choice stance and still be upset by what Mississippi or Texas might do. But I doubt that the truly angry ones were not already voting consistently.

The Federal Reserve enacted its steepest interest rate increase in more than 20 years Wednesday and indicated more monetary tightening is on the way, as it aims to slow the economy in order to bring inflation down.

Driving the news: The central bank's policy committee, following a two-day meeting, increased its target for short-term interest rates by half a percent, to a range of 0.75% to 1%. It also said it will begin shrinking its $9 trillion balance sheet of assets acquired as a form of pandemic-era stimulus.

The details: In a statement announcing the decision, the committee said that it "anticipates that ongoing increases" in rates will be appropriate and that it is "highly attentive to inflation risks."

It noted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is "creating additional upward pressure on inflation" and is "likely to weigh on economic activity." It added that COVID-related lockdowns in China are "likely to exacerbate supply chain disruptions."The decision was unanimous.

Trump official interfered in report on Russian election meddling – watchdog

Chad Wolf, then acting homeland security secretary, demanded changes and delayed report, risking perception of politicisation

Martin Pengelly in New York

@MartinPengelly

Wed 4 May 2022 12.28 EDT

Chad Wolf, Donald Trump’s acting secretary of homeland security, interfered with a report on Russian interference in the 2020 election by demanding changes, delaying its dissemination and creating a risk the report might be seen as politicised, a government watchdog said.

Eventually declassified in March 2021, the report was a summary of foreign election interference into the 2020 election. It found that, as one headline put it, “Russia tried to help Trump in 2020, Iran tried to hurt him and China stayed out of it”.

Chad Wolf: who is the Trump official leading the crackdown in Portland?

But before it was released, and two months before the election, an analyst in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) complained that Wolf, as well as his predecessor Kirstjen Nielsen and the deputy secretary,

According to the whistleblower, in mid-May 2020 Wolf instructed him “to cease providing intelligence assessments on the threat of Russian interference in the United States, and instead start reporting on interference activities by China and Iran”.

The analyst also said that in July 2020 he was ordered to delay the report because it “made the president look bad”.

At the time, a DHS spokesman “flatly denied” the claim.

On Tuesday, the office of the DHS inspector general released its own report. It found that DHS “did not adequately follow its internal processes and comply with applicable intelligence community policy standards and requirements when editing and disseminating an Office of Intelligence and Analysis [I&A] intelligence product regarding Russian interference in the 2020 US presidential election”.

DHS employees, it said, “changed the product’s scope by making changes that appear to be based in part on political considerations”.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday highlighted new figures showing the government’s red ink will grow less than expected this year and the national debt will shrink this quarter as he tried to counter criticism of his economic leadership amid growing dismay over inflation going into midterm elections that will decide control of Congress.

Biden, embracing deficit reduction as a way to fight inflation, stressed that the dip in the national debt would be the first in six years, an achievement that eluded former President Donald Trump despite his promises to improve the federal balance sheet.

“The bottom line is the deficit went up every year under my predecessor before the pandemic and during the pandemic. It has gone down both years since I’ve been here,” Biden said. “Why is it important? Because bringing down the deficit is one way to ease inflationary pressures.”

The president is placing a renewed emphasis on reducing the deficit — which is the gap between what the nation spends and what it takes in — in order to blunt Republican criticism that the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package has left the U.S. economy worse off. It’s an attempt to burnish his credentials as a responsible steward of the economy while trying to fend off criticism about inflation at a 40-year high. The reopening of the economy coming out of the coronavirus pandemic and the commodity squeeze resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war has made high prices a key political risk for Democrats.
