Georgia sees record primary voter turnout under new racists voter oppression law?

Gee I wonder how that works? This was "literally" Jim Crow or something!

On the first day of early primary voting, Georgia saw record turnout. According to local ABC News affiliate WTVM , "Officials say more than 27,000 voters cast their ballots early, in-person Monday." That’s three times the number of people that voted on the first day of the 2018 primary election and nearly double the number for the June 2020 primary, the office added. According to Gabriel Sterling , "Early in person [voting] has seen 97,168 GOP, 69,136 Dem & 1,284 nonpartisan votes. Mailed Absentee has seen 6,107 GOP, 6,696 Dem & 229 nonpartisan."

But the road to low inflation will likely be long. Inflation by all measures is well above the Fed's 2% target.

Producer prices excluding food, energy and trade services climbed 0.6% in April after increasing 0.9% in March. In the 12 months through April, the so-called core PPI rose 6.9% after accelerating 7.1% in March. The rise in underlying producer prices followed a similar trend with the core CPI.

"There are signs of cooling, though increases are still uncomfortably high," said Will Compernolle, senior economist at FHN Financial in New York. "The Fed has a long way to go to getting price increases closer to its target."

And if we pivoted back to how we used to 'score' CPI and inflation pressures in the 70's, current inflation would be running at AT LEAST 12%, and likely higher to as much as 16%. As of right now. Look for 20% by the new year. And ALL of this was self-inflicted.

Ben Shapiro loves to say "The truth doesn't care about your feelings" and he's right.

So we choose to change the unit of measure, thereby lying to ourselves to soften the blow.

It has been overturned by Justice appointed by DeSantis.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis is brazenly trying to curtail Black political power in his state as he redraws its congressional districts to significantly benefit Republicans.

The Florida legislature is meeting this week to consider a proposal from DeSantis that would give Florida Republicans a 20-8 advantage over Democrats in the state’s congressional delegation. That’s a four-seat increase from the 16-11 advantage Republicans hold now (Florida gained an additional seat in Congress because of population growth). The Florida senate approved the plan on a party line vote on Wednesday. It is still being debated in the Florida house of representatives.

DeSantis’s plan severely undercuts the voting power of Black Floridians. There are currently four districts in the state where Black voters can elect their preferred candidates. His plan would leave just two.

The governor has openly talked about his desire to eliminate the fifth congressional district, which stretches from Jacksonville to Tallahassee in northern Florida. Forty-six per cent of the voting-age population there is Black and it is represented by Al Lawson, a Black Democrat. DeSantis argues the district is unconstitutional because its unusual sprawling shape was drawn primarily with race in mind. “We are not going to have a 200-mile gerrymander that divvies up people based on the color of their skin. That is wrong,” he said this month.

His proposed map would chop up the fifth district into four new districts where Black voters would comprise a much smaller share of the population.

“Sometimes you have to apply Occam’s razor and the simplest explanation is the right one … This is a deeply racist move that targets Black political power,” said Michael Li, a redistricting expert at the Brennan Center for Justice. “What he’s doing in the Florida fifth just seems gratuitous. It seems mean-spirited and really designed to really put an oomph on things.”

A LIE.

Black Floridians can elect their preferred candidates in EVERY district.

The hacks that wrote this for the Guardian should know this. And I suspect they do. They just like to lie for the ridiculously named "Brennan Center for Justice."

Thanks for the maps though, Guardian. At least us northerners seeking to re-locate to Florida can use the maps to identify the high-crime areas and avoid them.

The dumbest thing about the post that he fucked up the thread with:

Your new hero 🙌

A state judge in Florida on Wednesday said that a gerrymandered congressional map pushed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was unconstitutional because it diminished the the ability of thousands of Black voters to pick the representative of their choice.

Attorneys for the state are sure to appeal the decision, and DeSantis has spoken openly about how he feels Florida’s anti-gerrymandering constitutional amendments violate the U.S. Constitution.

But for now, the congressional map that the governor fought hard to pass into law — and which would add several Republican-leaning seats to Florida’s already-red congressional delegation — has been placed on hold.

“I am finding that the enacted map is unconstitutional under the Fair Districts Amendment, Article 3 Section 20, because it diminishes African Americans’ ability to elect the representative of their choice,” said Judge J. Layne Smith of the Second Circuit Court of Florida, later clarifying that he was only commenting on the issue before him, a motion for a temporary injunction.

Smith announced his decision from the bench after a hearing Wednesday, saying he hoped to publish a written decision Thursday so that the state could appeal.

“I fully expect the appellate court to get this and move as swiftly as it can,” Smith said. “I think everybody in the government, regardless of the branch, ought to all be on the same page that we need to get this right as soon as we can.”

In the interim, Smith said, he was leaning toward using an alternative map proposal known as “Plan A” as a remedy. The map was recommended by an expert witness for legal challengers against DeSantis’ map, Stephen Ansolabehere of Harvard University.

‘A Race-Based Problem In North Florida’

The fight over DeSantis’ map focuses on Northern Florida, and specifically Congressional District 5, the current plurality-Black congressional district which DeSantis’ map would eliminate. The governor has said the district — and the legislature’s earlier plans to preserve it — amounted to a “racial gerrymander.”

Is that he has posted the same stuff on every thread...

So now I have to delete it....

Joey Sprinkles: Laser focused on bringing down gas prices...

The Biden administration canceled one of the most high-profile oil and gas lease sales pending before the Department of the Interior Wednesday, as Americans face record-high prices at the pump, according to AAA.

The DOI halted the potential to drill for oil in over 1 million acres in Alaska's Cook Inlet, along with two lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico. The move comes as Biden has taken a few actions to combat high gas prices, despite his administration's generally hostile approach to the oil industry.
