Here I thought Democrats "wanted" to win the abortion debate?

Nothing like backing an extrem law that would go well beyond Roe and Casey and be favored by only a small minority of voters Make no mistake... this was a crucial mishap. If Democrats really want to make Abortion an issue not sure why they did this. Now each and every one of them up for election will have to explain to the voters why they believe that abortions should be legal without restrictions, that taxpayers must fund them, and force all OB doctors to perform them.

This law might appeal to quarter of voters, if even that.  At best the polling numbers show a third want abortion without restriction. At worst, that number drops under 20%. All depending on how it is worded. Either way... this was not a populus bill designed to appeal to the masses.

Not sure why they couldn't have gone for something palatable? In fact, I think it is possible that if they did it correctly that they could have gotten 60 votes.  Outlaw second and third trimester abortions unless there is a medical issue. Vow to keep the Hyde Amendment in place to protect taxpayers who truly believe it is murder. Leave some things up to the States. Presto! You have a solution.

Unless of course, they didn't want a solution?

Scott I read this decades ago. That's why I understand this decision.

The decision in this Supreme Court Case established the right of the courts to determine the constitutionality of the actions of the other two branches of government.

In 1801, outgoing President John Adams had issued William Marbury a commission as justice of the peace — but the new Secretary of State, James Madison, refused to deliver it. Marbury then sued to obtain it. With his decision in Marbury v. Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall established the principle of judicial review, an important addition to the system of “checks and balances” created to prevent any one branch of the Federal Government from becoming too powerful.

“A Law repugnant to the Constitution is void.” With these words written by Chief Justice Marshall, the Supreme Court for the first time declared unconstitutional a law passed by Congress and signed by the President. Nothing stated in the Constitution gave the Court this specific power. Marshall, however, believed that the Supreme Court should have a role equal to those of the other two branches of government.

When James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay wrote a defense of the Constitution in The Federalist, they explained their judgment that a strong national government must have built-in restraints: “You must first enable government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.” The writers of the Constitution had given the executive and legislative branches powers that would limit each other as well as the judiciary branch.

The Constitution gave Congress the power to impeach and remove officials, including judges or the President himself. The President was given the veto power to restrain Congress and the authority to appoint members of the Supreme Court with the advice and consent of the Senate. In this intricate system, the role of the Supreme Court had not been defined. It therefore fell to a strong Chief Justice like Marshall to complete the triangular structure of checks and balances by establishing the principle of judicial review. Although no other law was declared unconstitutional until the Dred Scott decision of 1857, the role of the Supreme Court to invalidate federal and state laws that are contrary to the Constitution has never been seriously challenged.

“The Constitution of the United States,” said Woodrow Wilson, “was not made to fit us like a strait jacket. In its elasticity lies its chief greatness.” The often-praised wisdom of the authors of the Constitution consisted largely of their restraint. They resisted the temptation to write too many specifics into the basic document. They contented themselves with establishing a framework of government that included safeguards against the abuse of power. When the Marshall decision in Marbury v. Madison completed the system of checks and balances, the United States had a government in which laws could be enacted, interpreted and executed to meet challenging circumstances.

Anti-liberty leftists will always accuse others of what they are doing – they do this for a number of reasons, mainly as a form of disinformation, but you have to consider it must bring a certain amount of perverse pleasure for these hypocrites. They love the Big Lie narrative because they love to accuse others of being what they are – a socialist workers' party, or race-based antagonists dividing people by skin color. Hence, their mantra for the past 18 months is that any allusion to the 2020 election being a dumpster fire is of course a ‘Big Lie’, and they repeat it often as admonished by their heroes Hitler and Lenin. (Both are socialists, so they can spare us the fake outrage over the comparison.)

First of all, we’re supposed to forget the Biden laptop scandal that implicated ‘the Big Guy’ – a scandal subsequently suppressed by the biased media. (The same folks that are ever-neutral to a fault except when there’s an election on the line.) Then all bets are off, and that news isn’t fit to print – until 18 months later – when it’s far too late. We are also supposed to forget that news jeopardized an honest election.

Within days of the chaos of mail-in voting, ballot harvesting, and dropbox stuffing, we were told it was in fact the "most secure in history." One of the ‘debunking’ stories had a great quote that 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.’ If the 2020 election was the "most secure in history," then that extraordinary claim needs some extraordinary proof. That’s correct anti-liberty leftists, if you are going to claim perfection on a historic scale while simultaneously parroting the Big Lie BS (BidenSpeak) however and whenever you possibly can, the burden of proof is on you.

We are also supposed to forget all the glaring statistical oddities of the 2020 election. That the man who campaigned from his basement, or to tiny crowds in the middle of nowhere, earned 80+ million votes. Even worse, was that his ability to acquire raw vote totals didn’t translate to down-ballot races. Does anyone feel like we’re being set up for the same kind of fairytale story this time around? That those plucky ‘Democrats’ facing long odds in ‘saving the planet’ and initiating change were able to win anyway despite the polling or that their other candidates didn’t get as many votes?

Joe Biden goes on the road to different places each week, acting as though he’s actually doing something beneficial, while things continue to get worse for Americans, and he doesn’t seem to know how to make anything better.

They must hope because he’s more or less repeating the same speech in each place that he won’t mess it up. But Joe being Joe, he always does. In the words of Barack Obama, “Never underestimate the ability of Joe to f**k things up.”

It’s always an adventure trying to figure out what Biden is saying. Periodically, I wonder what the rest of the world must be thinking when they hear the crazy things that he says and what jeopardy he places us all in with his incompetence. It’s scary to ponder.

Biden was in Illinois visiting a farm Wednesday when he hit on one of his common topics about how the acreage that burned last year was equivalent in size to the state of New Jersey. But although this is a common talking point, he couldn’t get it straight. He seemed to define New Jersey as stretching from New York to Virginia.

“More timber, more land, more buildings, more territory has been burned to the ground this year than the entire state of New Jersey, from New York all the way down to Virginia. The entire state of New Jersey,” Biden declared.

Pro-tip, Joe? New Jersey doesn’t border Virginia. Any 12-year-old has a better grasp on geography than Joe Biden. And Biden should know better, especially since he’s from Delaware, but he doesn’t.

Then we have the G-7 — what is the G-7? Probably not everyone knows. But Joe Biden has been to G-7 summits. He was Vice President for eight years and in Congress for 36 years. He should know.

Biden claimed that the G-7 is “all the democracies in Europe.” Wrong. It’s not all the democracies of Europe; there are several democracies in Europe that are not part of the G-7. The G-7 is the seven most advanced economies and includes countries that aren’t in Europe. Biden tried to clean it up by saying “North America, Europe, and Asia — they’re all part of it.” But that just made things messier. The G-7 is Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union as a “non-enumerated” member. A lot of Europe and Asia are not part of the G-7. That’s embarrassing.

Then, Biden twice seemed to completely lose his train of thought during the farm talk. I don’t know whether he couldn’t see the teleprompter or what; he looked like he was straining to see something. But he just broke down in the middle.

I felt bad for the sign interpreter here — how do you interpret this when it’s not interpretable?
Sleepy time ⏲️ 😴 😪 😑

Red State Detective said...

“Last year I signed, one of the first executive orders I signed, was that the competition to make competition more available and level the playing field,” he said.

This was not going well. But he still had another stop to make — in Chicago at the IBEW Convention. While that’s a union stop and perhaps more favorable, Joe’s brain wasn’t anymore in gear. You can see him desperately trying to figure out the teleprompter and what he’s supposed to say, but it’s a complete fail.

But just remember, he has a “plan” to improve your standard of living. How has your standard of living been since he came into office? Not so good is it? How are all those plans he had for COVID, inflation, and the gas prices going? Gas prices just hit another record high this week and the CPI was higher than expected.

Then he threw in a lie about “inheriting an economy on the brink of a depression.”

Then Biden followed that up with screaming about some people dealing with limited food shortages at the beginning of the pandemic when everything was shut down, forgetting that now under him, without the lockdowns, there have been more shortages and historic inflation, affecting everyone. He’s been engaging in a lot more of this screaming lately — a common feature of dementia.

Finland’s president and prime minister on Thursday said they supported the country applying for NATO membership, making it all but certain that the Nordic nation will join the alliance in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would be a major break from decades of Finnish nonaligned defense policy and deal a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambition to divide and weaken the Western alliance.

Finland and neighboring Sweden have for decades been the two major holdouts among Western nations outside the NATO alliance. Both Nordic countries are likely to apply for membership next week, despite warnings from Russia that such bids would have “consequences.”

“NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security,” President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in a joint statement. “As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland’s leaders announced Thursday that they would seek NATO membership for the Nordic nation, underscoring a potential tectonic shift to the military alliance and Europe’s security order, more than two months into Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The green light from Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin is the first step toward a formal application from a country with a long-standing military nonalignment. The Finnish leaders said membership — which would double NATO’s land border with Russia — would bolster Finland’s security and the entire defense alliance. Before the announcement, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he doubted Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to let the conflict spill over into countries such as Poland because he wouldn’t want to take on NATO.

Finland's leaders announced Thursday their intention for the country to join NATO "without delay," a move that would bolster the Western military alliance's strength in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and redraw Europe's security map.

The Nordic nation, which shares an 810-mile border with Russia, is expected to be given rapid accession to join the alliance and neighboring Sweden looks set to follow with its own bid in the coming days.

President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin announced their support for the country’s bid to join NATO in a joint statement early Thursday.

“NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance,” Niinistö and Marin said.

“Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay. We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days.”

Finland has traditionally been militarily neutral and enjoyed good relations with Moscow — but the war in Ukraine has led the country to rethink its security and self-determinism.

The move is a sign of European unity and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggression, with Western countries acting to counter fears that the Kremlin wants to reestablish Russian power over its neighbors beyond Ukraine.

The end to Kyiv's long-standing desire to join NATO and the removal of Western troops in the region were central to Putin's pre-war demands, but Finland joining would double Russia's border with the Transatlantic alliance.

Finland's president and prime minister announced Thursday their support for an application for NATO membership, setting in motion a process that will culminate in the alliance's ninth enlargement since its founding in 1949.

Why it matters: Finland will more than double the length of NATO's borders with Russia once it is officially admitted into the alliance. Sweden is expected to make an announcement on NATO membership on Sunday. The transformation of Europe's security landscape is a nightmare for Vladimir Putin — but one triggered by his own decision to invade Ukraine.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

HELSINKI/KYIV, May 12 (Reuters) - Finland said on Thursday it intended to apply to join NATO without delay, with Sweden likely to follow suit, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine reshapes European security and the Atlantic military alliance.

NATO allies expect Finland and Sweden to be granted membership quickly, five diplomats and officials told Reuters, paving the way for increased troop presence in the Nordic region during the one-year ratification period.

The Kremlin said Finland’s accession would “definitely” pose a threat to Russia’s security and warned against a NATO expansion near its border. The Russian foreign ministry said Moscow would have "to take retaliatory steps...to stop the threats that arise.” The green light from Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin is the first step toward a formal application from a country with a long-standing military nonalignment. Sweden is considering a similar move, and Washington has said it would strongly support both.

NATO and European leaders welcomed Finland’s announcement on Thursday. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said its inclusion would strengthen both the country and the Western alliance, promising a “smooth and swift” process. On the battlefield, Ukraine said its troops were pushing back Russian forces around the second-largest city of Kharkiv, as airstrikes hit the Chernihiv region further north.

FINLAND PRESIDENT, PRIME MINISTER, URGE THE COUNTRY TO APPLY FOR NATO MEMBERSHIP 'WITHOUT DELAY'

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The comments came after Finnish leaders on Thursday urged their country’s officials to initiate the NATO application process "without delay" and argued the backing of the 30-member alliance was vital to Helsinki’s security.

Finland, a traditionally neutral nation in Northern Europe that shares a border with Russia, began to look to the military alliance along with neighboring Sweden after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

NATO expansion has been chief among Putin’s security concerns and was a contributing factor as to why he launched his invasion of Ukraine, which had previously looked to join the 30-member alliance.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Western officials have long argued that Putin intended to weaken NATO by causing discord in Europe upon invading Ukraine – a war that has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.

But instead, nations are now looking to expand the alliance over concerns that Putin could extend his conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Moscow last month threatened to deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles along its western border with Finland should it or Sweden expand NATO membership.

The U.S., U.K. and Germany have pledged security guarantees for Helsinki and Stockholm while they await admittance into the alliance.

There is "credible" information that Russian prisoners of war have been mistreated by Ukrainian forces since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February, a United Nations official said.

The evidence suggests that Russia is not the only country willing to break international norms during war, as the U.N. reports that Ukrainian forces have subjected Russians under their watch to treatment that violates international law, Matilda Bogner, head of the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, said Tuesday.

"We have received credible information of torture, ill-treatment and incommunicado detention by Ukrainian Armed Forces against prisoners of war from Russian armed forces and affiliated armed groups," Bogner said. "We continue to see the publication of videos, which show inhumane treatment, including prisoners from both sides being coerced to make statements, apologies and confessions, and other forms of humiliation."

An image of the Black Hole at Center of Our Milky Way Galaxy Is Captured for First TimeSagittarius A* is 4 million times as massive as the sun

By Aylin Woodward

May. 12, 2022 9:33 am ET

At the heart of our galaxy, about 26,000 light-years from Earth, lies a black hole 4 million times as massive as the sun. For the first time, scientists have captured an image of this cosmic body at the Milky Way’s center—a region of space so dense that nothing, not even light, can break free of its gravitational pull.

The image, released Thursday during simultaneous press conferences hosted by various institutions in seven countries, reveals the black hole, named Sagittarius A*, as a dark center silhouetted against a bright orange-yellow ring. Black holes by their very nature are unseeable, but their boundaries cast a shadow against the bright backdrop of hot gas and dust that encircles them. That shadow is what’s visible to certain telescopes on Earth.

“Seeing is believing, and this moment of finally seeing something that was always just a fantasy or an idea or model, it’s just such an amazing, captivating moment,” said Heino Falcke, a radio astronomy professor at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands..

We have finally seen the black hole at the center of our galaxy 💜

Astronomers on Thursday unveiled the first image of a supermassive black hole that roils the center of our galaxy, its gravity so powerful that it bends space and time and forms a glowing ring of light with eternal darkness at the core. The black hole, seen from Earth near the constellation Sagittarius, has a mass equal to more than 4 million suns.

Feryal Ozel, a University of Arizona astronomer, described the achievement as "the first direct image of the gentle giant in the center of our galaxy.”

In yet another major blow for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Finland's president and prime minister have now said that their country intends to apply for NATO membership.

In a joint statement released Thursday, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that they believe NATO membership is essential to ensuring their nation's security in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance," they wrote. "Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay. We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days."

Finland, which shares an 830-mile land border with Russia, has traditionally stayed away from NATO membership in the interest of maintaining a diplomatic balance between Russia and other Western European nations.

Kathy, is a strong conservative who will protect your liberties, and get our nation back on track.

On May 17th, Vote Kathy Barnette for US Senate. She has my full endorsement!!

I'm rooting for her. She's the democrats biggest nightmare being a populist young black woman and huge Trump supporter

She didn't get his endorsement but if she prevails over Oz and the other GOP establishment candidate she definitely will

And if she then goes on to the Senate 2024 looks even brighter !!!

FBI Whistleblowers Claim Agents Investigated Parents Accused of Threatening School Boards over Mask Policies

House Judiciary Committee Republicans claimed in a letter on Wednesday that the FBI conducted investigations into Americans based on allegations that they threatened local school boards, citing whistleblowers from the agency.

The FBI’s counterterrorism bureau reportedly created an internal “threat tag” in fall 2021 to track alleged threats against school boards following an October 4 directive from Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland released his directive after the National School Boards Association called on the Biden administration on September 29 to investigate parents who allegedly threatened boards over policies on school masks and critical race theory, and to determine whether the parents had violated the Patriot Act or hate crimes laws. (The NSBA subsequently apologized for releasing the letter.)

The FBI labeled “dozens” of investigations with the threat tag “EDUOFFICIALS,” Representatives Jim Jordan (R., Ohio) and Mike Johnson (R., La.) claimed in their new letter on Wednesday, citing FBI whistleblowers. Jordan and Johnson wrote that the new revelations contradicted Garland’s congressional testimony denying that parents were intentionally targeted under counterterrorism procedures.

One investigation allegedly began after the FBI received a tip that a mom had told a local school board, “We are coming for you.” The complaint “alleged that the mom was a threat because she belonged to a ‘right wing mom’s group’ known as ‘Moms for Liberty,’ and because she is a ‘gun owner,'” the congressmen wrote. An FBI agent reportedly interviewed the the mom, who said she was upset about a school mask mandate and wanted to elect new board members.

PNH (Deirdre) said...

Assuming you guys even remember I exist, I thought you might find it interesting that even though my political ideology is very much the same as it was, I am no longer voting Democratic party.

It began with them claiming TX voter laws disproportionately disenfranchise black people. WTF? One extra line on a mail in ballot application asking for ID# or last 4 digits SSN is going to confuse us so badly we won't be able to vote??? Next, because most black people smoke menthol cigarettes, we're going to protect black people and ban menthol cigarettes.

Then there's we need to do everything trans people want or black trans women will die. Now, it's how banning abortion will disproportionately affect low income black women. In my child-bearing years I was a low income black woman and even if had wanted an abortion, I didn't have the money for it.

The "disinformation governance board" was the last straw. "Censorship to save democracy" is a line I will not cross. I wonder if all these years of catering to emo people's trumped up claims about hate speech and going along with the "Russia helped Trump beat Hillary" stupidity was all about getting Democrats to demand censorship giving Democrats the ability to block the truth about our imperialist actions. I finally came to terms with the fact that Democrats are most responsible for all the lie wars. Yes, Neocons, too -- but Republicans have largely been non-interventionist. Globalism is a Dem endeavor.

So, for those reasons and more -- I cancelled recurring donations and dropped out of volunteering. I'm no longer voting for Democrats.

Looking at the abortion thing. Some Republicans are willing to codify Roe and Casey as they currently exist but Democrats are deliberately pushing for more knowing they won't get it. So, is the goal to protect abortion as is or is it to keep it a weapon as long as possible.

Then the "Republicans want to end Social Security and Medicare." I'm old enough to remember how long Republicans have been pleading with Democrats to do something to address the future funding problem to SAVE those programs. Time is almost up and now Democrats are still weaponizing it.

I see it. It has always been about maintaining global power and we the people -- especially black people -- are nothing more than pawns.

They played me. My circumstances were such that I was fearful and that was used against me. I'm still poor but my life story has been one in which the universe (God for religious people) has repeatedly shown me that no matter how impossible a situation may seem, take the high road and things will go well.

So...with foreign policy still being my top issue and given the way that Trump resulted in many Republicans coming out against imperialism...

I'm about to start voting Republican, Libertarian or Independent. Right now to my mind the biggest threat to democracy is the ongoing Democratic war on the dictionary. Pretty soon we'll be doing Tower of Babel type confusion.

OMG. The beast that speaks like a lamb. Babylon has fallen, come out of her my people. I'm NOT religious but I do know that The Bible does contain some profound wisdom and as I was typing this I feel like I just had my own little "revelation."

Hi, Caliphate

Assuming you mean my youngest -- the autistic one -- he's great!

For reasons he struggled a bit after high school trying to figure out what he wanted to do and unfortunately my health was so poor I wasn't much help.

Last year I switched doctors and am functioning almost as well as before the aneurysm ruptured, so we're figuring it out. The answer was so simple. It was as easy as pointing out to him that he didn't need to choose a "career" before getting a job. It just took me this long to realize what was holding him back. So, he just started looking for a job and intends to get his own place, soon.

I hope all is well with your family.

PNH, good to see and hear from you again after all this time.

Please don't be a stranger. I appreciated you way back when on the Yahoo boards and I do now.

Best wishes!

PNH (Deirdre) said...

Thanks, RRB.

I actually missed a mixed environment in which people could express their opinions and not have to deal with special interest folks trying to bully you off a platform or mass report you, trying to get you banned. Left leaners on Twitter were talking about all the ways Elon Musk could have helped the world with that $44B he's using to buy Twitter. I literally responded that him using his own money to try to protect freedom of speech and access to information may be one of the greatest gifts to the world, ever.

And pardon my emotional moment but it's so awesome that even though I'm pretty sure I said things that some of you said a long time ago, nobody is gloating.

No pardon necessary. And no, no one I know is gloating. I'm just pleasantly surprised and glad that you've "seen the light" so to speak.

And your comment regarding Musk's Twitter purchase is probably the best reaction I've seen on the topic, bar none. Protecting the freedom of speech is an amazing gift, and in all of human history, those who protested AGAINST the freedom of speech were NEVER the good guys.

FTC Gets a Democratic Majority
May 12, 2022 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan now has the Democratic majority she needs to turn her progressive vision for antitrust and privacy into reality,” Politico reports.

“The Senate’s confirmation of Georgetown University law professor Alvaro Bedoya on Wednesday will end a 2-2 partisan deadlock that kept many of Khan’s priorities on ice since October.”

ANOTHER SMALL VICTORY FOR DECENCY AND DEMOCRACY THAT CAN LEAD TO MUCH NEEDED BIGGER THINGS.
