The court’s conservative majority has sabotaged all manner of democratically enacted laws: environmental and labor regulations, limits on the role of money in politics. The court’s decisions on voting rights and gerrymandering are anti-democratic on their face since they enable minority rule in the states that would be legislating on abortion. And the justices’ refusal to be candid about their designs on Roe matters. They prioritized their own confirmations over the imperative of a necessary national dialogue on the flaws and virtues of a controversial ruling they apparently intended to scrap.

On a personal level, I understand the surveys showing that many Americans have complicated views of abortion. Mine are complicated, too. Here’s what’s not complicated: The best path toward reducing the incidence of abortion is to offer far more support to women, both during pregnancy and as they raise their children. By walking away from child credits, expanded child care and paid parental leave, our nation has signaled its indifference to their struggles.

But the abrupt fall of Roe, and the widespread criminalization of abortion, would be disastrous. It would not end abortion. It would endanger the lives of many women and place a particular burden on the least privileged among us.

Conservatives (as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. may be telling his colleagues) should understand that a change as radical as the one Alito contemplates almost always blows up in its authors’ faces.
----------

Chief Justice Roberts will get one of Trump’s appointees to join the liberal minority and leave Roe v Wade intact.

Really.

You get yourself knocked up and then you have the audacity to want to make it MY fucking problem?

Oh, and you want me to pay off your student loans too? Paying back the loans for those grievance studies is tough on a barista's salary. Well, that was something to consider BEFORE you let your college 'advisor' talk you into that 'Intersectionality' major.

First the New Deal, and then the Great Society. And what we've got to show for them is a nation full of fucking parasites.

Choose wisely when crafting those very lame Trump jokes, chief.

Overturning mandatory legality is not the same as making all abortions illegal. It would then be up to the states. And most voters oppose third trimester procedures. Serms to me there's a big difference between the 8th week and 38th week. This does not have to be an all or nothing issue.

rrb said...

This does not have to be an all or nothing issue.

Every issue with the left is all or nothing because they lack the ability to compromise.

And republicans are stupid enough to elect morons like Romney and Collins to help the left enact their agenda without compromise.

Expect more of the same if the GOP takes congress this fall and installs McCarthy as speaker.

So are we now defining a woman as a person capable of aborting a baby?

Unless the courts or the January 6th committee will expose enough evidence to change enough minds, he is in charge.

"Trump is already using Vance’s victory in Ohio to set the tone for the rest of the primary season. Fresh off Vance’s victory, Trump brought Vance to Pennsylvania on Friday for a rally for Mehmet Oz, the Senate candidate Trump is backing there.

At a minimum, Republican voters in 2024 will likely know which candidate Trump supports in the event he doesn’t run himself. In Ohio, internal polling in the Senate race suggested that about 83 percent of voters knew before the election that Trump had endorsed Vance. But that number was far higher among those who ultimately voted for him. In a presidential election with months of nonstop coverage, virtually every Republican will know Trump’s pick.

“Right now, if you’re looking at the anti-Trump capacity or elasticity inside the Republican electorate, it’s maybe 20 percent,” said Kevin Madden, who was a senior adviser to Romney in 2012.

For a moderate Republican, he said, “There’s a lane, and there is an opportunity in some states.” But among Republicans who vote most reliably in primaries, Ohio was evidence it is still vanishingly small.

“The thing about Trump,” Madden said, “is he just basically blocks out the sun.”

UZHHOROD, Ukraine — First lady Jill Biden crossed the border into Ukraine on Sunday, entering an active war zone in a rare move for the spouse of a sitting president.

Biden entered the country on Mother’s Day from Slovakia after she visited a processing center at the Vysne Nemecke border crossing and met with refugees. Inside Ukraine, she met with Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska, who had not appeared in public since the Russian invasion on Feb. 24.

“I wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” Biden said before the start of a closed-door meeting between the two first ladies. “I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”

My generation should no longer be in control in the White House.

It has been an education in American politics to watch those who have taken principled stands on relatively uncontroversial issues wilt in the heat when democracy itself is on the line. Proximity to power and the taste of celebrity change them, pushing them to do or say or excuse whatever is necessary to get more proximate, to get a fuller taste.

And what awaits those who dare to stand on principle regardless of whether the party stands with them? Penalty and ostracization. The present system offers them no reward. Should we be surprised that politicians who thrive in our environment of toxic polarization—where, at best, half the country eyes the other half suspiciously, or, at worst, considers them enemies of the state—prefer what is undemanding and politically expedient to what is demanding and politically risky?

It is said that we get the government we deserve. That is BS. The men and women standing watch halfway across the world deserve better. Hardworking families who are one healthcare emergency away from financial ruin deserve better. The citizens forced to run an obstacle course of statutes and regulations just to vote, and the children who depend on public schools to prepare them for a productive and engaged civic life—they deserve better.

I hope to one day see new leaders ascend in a system reformed to reward character and principle. A system recalibrated so that money plays a less decisive role. A system capable of providing Americans the government we deserve, lest we lose the democracy we have.

ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine (AP) — Dozens of Ukrainians were feared dead Sunday after a Russian bomb flattened a school sheltering about 90 people in its basement, while Ukrainian troops refused to surrender at a besieged steel plant that Moscow's invading forces sped to seize before Russia's Victory Day holiday.

A Highly Winnable Fight
May 8, 2022 at 10:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 90 Comments

Andrew Sullivan:
“A healthy political party would thrill at this opportunity — a winning issue where the GOP has gone off the deep end.

"In the states likely to ‘trigger’ total bans if Roe falls,
43 percent of adults on average say abortion should be legal in most or all cases,
while 52 percent say it should be illegal in most or all cases.
That’s a highly winnable fight.

“In states which might re-enact some kind of abortion restrictions,
‘an average of 49 percent of adults say abortion should be legal in most or all cases, compared with 45 percent who say otherwise’
— even more promising terrain for Democrats.”

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) was interviewed on Meet the Press by Chuck Todd:

TODD: You’ve just said that you believe life begins at conception. If there is legislation brought to you to ban contraception, would you sign it?

REEVES: Well, I don’t think that’s going to happen in Mississippi. I’m sure they’ll have those conversations in other states.

TODD: But you’re not answering the question.

REEVES: As is always the case with things — well, that’s always the case. There’s so many things that we can talk about.

Jill Biden Makes Surprise Visit to Ukraine
May 8, 2022 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

“Jill Biden, the first lady, traveled to western Ukraine in an unannounced trip on Sunday, the latest sign of support from the United States, which has significantly increased military aid for Ukraine in recent weeks,” the New York Times reports.

“Dr. Biden met Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, at a school in Uzhhorod, a town of 100,000 people a few miles from the border with Slovakia. The town’s population has doubled in recent weeks with the arrival of people fleeing fighting elsewhere in the country.”

Said Mrs. Biden:
“I wanted to come on Mother’s Day. I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

The GOP Establishment Looks Screwed for 2024
May 8, 2022 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 90 Comments

“The conventional view of J.D. Vance’s victory in Ohio’s Senate primary this week was that it demonstrated the power of Donald Trump’s endorsement,” Politico reports.

“But the election results also delivered something else: an outline of the 2024 GOP primary’s establishment lane, the one expected to be occupied by the likes of Govs. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas or Larry Hogan of Maryland, former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey or someone else from the party’s traditionalist wing.”

“In a crowded contest in which a field of free-spending Republicans competed for the Trump vote, the performance of the one serious contender who distanced himself from the former president proved revealing.”

Mastriano Holds Double-Digit Lead in GOP Primary
May 8, 2022 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 36 Comments

A New Democratic poll in Pennsylvania, reviewed by City & State, shows Doug Mastriano (R) leads the Republican gubernatorial field with support from 28% of voters, a 14-point lead over the next-closest candidate, former U.S. attorney Bill McSwain (R).

McSwain was second with support from 14% of voters, while former Rep. Lou Barletta (R) came in third with 12%. Dave White (R) was fourth with 11%, and two other candidates – former Rep. Melissa Hart (R) and Jake Corman (R) – received 6% and 3%, respectively.

Selena Zito: A Doug Mastriano win would cost the GOP the House and Senate in that state.

Midterms’ Biggest Abortion Battleground Is Pennsylvania
May 8, 2022 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 50 Comments

New York Times: “Pennsylvania, one of a handful of states where abortion access hangs in the balance with midterm elections this year, is a test case of the political power of the issue in a post-Roe world, offering a look at whether it will motivate party bases or can be a wedge for suburban independents.

“After a draft of a Supreme Court opinion that would end the constitutional guarantee of abortion rights was leaked last week,
Republicans downplayed the issue, shifting attention instead to the leak itself and away from its substance. They also argued that voters’ attentions were fleeting, that abortion was hardly a silver bullet for Democratic apathy and that more pressing issues — inflation and President Biden’s unpopularity — had already cast the midterm die.

“To Democrats, this time really is different.”
