Be careful what you wish for!

You push Trump aside and a more viable DeSantis just takes the spot and wins even easier...
No question that the entire Jan 6th committee is little more than an attempt to disqualify the former President from running in 2024. If they cannot technically disqualify him by coming up with some crazy charge that the AG would run with and make stick, they are hoping to convince people that he should not ever be President again.

Much of this comes from a place that suggests that Donald Trump would beat Biden and all other Democratic comers in the 2024 election. Democrats cannot have that? But what does it say when DeSantis is leading Biden in New Hampshire and pushing a nine point swing in that state. Imagine how that sort of swing would play out nationally. DeSantis would win in almost landslide fashion.

Would the Democrats be happier with a for sure winner Ron DeSantis in a 2024 Presidential nomination or the supposed still likely (but not as certain) winner in a Trump nomination in 2024? It would seem with DeSantis, you are almost conceding the GOP will control the White House come 2025, but with Trump there seems to be a fighting chance!

More to the point, what if Trump and DeSantis both ran for the nomination? Think of the infighting that would take place. This would be the political equivalent of a blood sport. But with Trump out of the way, there may not even be a serious challenge to DeSantis, and anyone who did challenge him would likely be in an entirely different "lane" (think Paul Ryan or Mike Pence).

Be careful what you wish for? Might be better off with Trump over DeSantis if you are the Democrats and are still praying that they can figure out a way to keep the White House for another four years. But they seem hell bent to open the lane to DeSantis who they will have almost no chance to beat.

Those who work closely with him say that he is unique among elected officials in his disregard for public opinion and the press. “Ron’s strength as a politician is that he doesn’t give a fuck,” a Republican consultant who knows him told me. “Ron’s weakness as a politician is that he doesn’t give a fuck. DeSantis has many of the qualities that Republicans love about Trump and Democrats hate. His willingness to fight back and not back down from the woke mob is the one thing that ties them together.

DeSantis is less "blunt" and appears more "serious" to the Washington elites because he is a politician. I would argue that DeSantis is more "electable" even as he will be trashed 24/7 if he runs...

In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present

and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientifictechnological elite

Scott do you still believe that demonstration on on the Capitol as mostly insurrection and justified by the big lie?

Weeks before the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) held a hearing on election fraud in an attempt to legitimize former president Donald Trump’s false allegations of voting irregularities. Four days before the attack on the Capitol, Johnson signed a statement with nine other Republican senators that they intended to object to certifying Joe Biden’s electors and demand “an emergency 10-day audit of the election.”

This week, the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot revealed that Johnson’s chief of staff tried to deliver to Vice President Mike Pence a slate of fake electors backing Trump, raising questions about the Wisconsin Republican’s role in a deliberate and coordinated plan to block Biden’s win and give Trump the presidency.

The disclosure also underscores the extent of Johnson’s role as one of Congress’s most prominent election deniers and Jan. 6 apologists — spreading conspiracy theories about rigged votes and playing down the severity of the violent assault on the Capitol as mostly “peaceful,” while floating the idea that it might have been an inside job by the FBI. Like you said before.

They might have direct evidence against Trump.

In fact of all of the things listed (security, FBI involvement, instigators, etc) Trump's involvement was listed as dead last for what people were interested in.

So we have had what? Three or four hearings and it has covered Trump, Trump, Trump and more Trump. We have learned NOTHING about the security lapses, we have heard nothing about the known FBI infiltration of the mob, we don't know why the wrong police were there. We know nothing new.

This is why I oppose DeSantis. It's the Red Scare of the 21st century

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has decided to punish Disney for its opposition to the state's "Don't Say Gay" legislation.

On Oct. 24 1947, at the height of the post-World War II “Red Scare,” Walter E. Disney testified before the infamous Congressional House on Un-American Activities Committee against the managers and labor organizers who he believed were communists trying to take over his company.

Walt didn’t have much proof–only suspicions–and went so far as to say that even if these Hollywood creatives weren’t communists, they “should be” deemed as such because when he had “looked into them,” they had “no religion” and some had done some work at the Moscow Art theatre.

“I feel that they really ought to be smoked out and shown up for what they are, so that all of the good, free causes in this country, all the liberalisms that really are American, can go out without the taint of communism. That is my sincere feeling on it,” he said.

While Walt was collaborating with the HUAC, braver Americans were defying it. Actors such as Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Gene Kelly, and John Huston formed the Committee for the First Amendment and signed a petition to denounce the congressional committee as un-American itself for probing the politics of individual citizens.

A group that became known as the Hollywood Ten refused to comply with subpoenas, faced jail sentences for contempt and were “blacklisted” as artists. Even Charlie Chaplin was blacklisted.

In the annals of socially responsible corporate behavior, Walt did not distinguish himself–or his company–back in 1947. Instead of supporting those who put their Hollywood careers at risk to protest the vile and undemocratic behavior of Congress, he cast his lot with the hunters.

No political favors could have justified ruining Walt Disney’s legacy and the reputation of the company.

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis is punishing the Disney Company–one of Florida’s largest employers–because it stood up to the state’s new “Don’t Say Gay” legislation.

Red scare overtones abound. “In Florida, we will not let the far left woke agenda take over our schools and workplaces. There is no place for indoctrination or discrimination in Florida,” the governor has declared.

Lieutenant-Governor Jeanette NuΓ±ez was more direct: “We will always fight to protect our children and parents from this Marxist-inspired curriculum.”

The aide, Sean Riley, told Pence’s legislative director Chris Hodgson that Johnson wanted to hand Pence lists of the fake electors from Michigan and Wisconsin for Pence to introduce during the counting of electoral votes that certified Joe Biden’s win. The attempt was revealed in text messages obtained by the Jan. 6 select committee during its fourth public hearing on Tuesday.

The GOP has become a 'toxic waste dump' of 'autocracy and denialism': Bush strategist

June 22, 2022

On Wednesday's edition of MSNBC's "Deadline: White House," former George W. Bush campaign strategist Matt Dowd tore into the current state of the Republican Party.

The problem, he argued, is that notwithstanding the recent losses of Trump-endorsed candidates in Georgia, the former president still has a strong command of the party — and even getting rid of him at this point is not going to course-correct the GOP.

"I think we have to stop lookinwg at the environment through the prism of whether or not Donald Trump wins or loses and how that defines the Republican Party," said Dowd. "Georgia is an outlier in this. 94 percent of people that Donald Trump endorsed have won. That's a pretty good record for Donald Trump. I think the worst thing is — which I actually think is far more dangerous — nearly every Republican candidate who has won a primary, a Republican whether endorsed by Donald Trump or not, either pushes the Big Lie, is an election denier, or doesn't have a problem with the move towards autocracy."

The current state of the Republican Party, continued Dowd, is "a little bit like Chernobyl."

"What led to Chernobyl was bad design, misinformation and bad decision-making by people there," continued Dowd. "Just because you remove a person that hit a wrong switch and contributed to the meltdown doesn't mean you don't have nuclear disaster that spreads. Even if you take that person out, Donald Trump, the Republican Party has become a toxic waste dump of this Big Lie autocracy and denialism. That's, I think, the fundamental problem. There is not Republicans winning who don't buy into a problem that the January 6th Committee is investigating."

This comes as that committee is revealing new details of Trump allies' complicity in the illegal plot to overturn the election, including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI).

Democracy Dies in Darkness

WASHINGTON — The Jan. 6 committee will hear from former Justice Department officials who faced down a relentless pressure campaign from Donald Trump over the 2020 presidential election results while suppressing a bizarre challenge from within their own ranks.

The hearing Thursday will bring attention to a memorably turbulent stretch at the department as Trump in his final days in office sought to bend to his will a law enforcement agency that has long cherished its independence from the White House. The testimony is aimed at showing how Trump not only relied on outside advisers to press his election fraud claims, but also tried to leverage the powers of federal executive branch agencies.

The witnesses will include Jeffrey Rosen, who was acting attorney general during the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Three days earlier, Rosen was part of a tense Oval Office showdown in which Trump contemplated replacing him with a lower-level official, Jeffrey Clark, who wanted to champion Trump’s claims of election fraud.

Two other former department officials, Rosen’s top deputy, Richard Donoghue, and Steven Engel, are also scheduled to testify. Both warned Trump at the White House meeting that they’d resign, and that many of the department’s lawyers would follow, if he replaced Rosen with Clark.

“You could have a situation here, within 24 hours, you have hundreds of people resigning from the Justice Department,” Donoghue has said he told Trump. “Is that good for anyone? Is it good for the department? Is it good for the country? Is it good for you. It’s not.”

Only then did Trump relent. The night, and later his administration, ended with Rosen still in power.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Thursday’s hearing will focus on what happened next as Rosen, Barr’s top deputy, took over the department and found himself immediately besieged by Trump’s demands for Justice Department action.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

In one phone conversation, according to handwritten notes taken by Donoghue and made public by lawmakers last year, Trump directed to Rosen to “Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen.”

Around that time, Trump was introduced by a Republican congressman, Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, to Clark, who’d joined the department in 2018 as its chief environmental lawyer and was later appointed to run its civil division. Clark was earlier subpoenaed by the committee to give a deposition but will not be among the witnesses Thursday.

Clark, according to statements from other Justice Department officials, met with Trump despite being ordered not to by bosses at the department and presented himself as eager to aid the president’s efforts to challenge the election results. A report released last year by the Senate Judiciary Committee that painted Clark as a relentless advocate for Trump included a draft letter pushing Georgia officials to convene a special legislative session to reconsider the election results.

Clark wanted the letter sent, but superiors at the Justice Department refused.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The situation came to a head on Jan. 3, 2021, a Sunday, when Clark informed Rosen in a private meeting at the Justice Department that Trump wanted to replace him with Clark as acting attorney general. Rosen, according to the Senate report, responded that “there was no universe I could imagine in which that would ever happen” and that he would not accept being fired by a subordinate.

Rosen then contacted the White House to request a meeting. That night, Rosen, Donoghue and Engel, along with Clark, gathered with Trump and top White House lawyers for a contentious, hours-long Oval Office meeting about whether the president should follow through with his plans for a radical leadership change at the department.

According to testimony given by Rosen, Trump opened the meeting by saying, “One thing we know is you, Rosen, aren’t going to do anything to overturn the election.”

Donoghue and Engel made clear to Trump that they and large numbers of other Justice Department officials would resign if Trump fired Rosen. White House lawyers said the same. Pat Cipollone, then the White House counsel, said the letter that Clark wanted to send was a “murder-suicide pact.”

“Steve Engel at one point said, ‘Jeff Clark will be leading a graveyard. And what are you going to get done with a graveyard,’ that there would be such an exodus of the leadership,” Donoghue told the Senate Judiciary Committee. “So it was very strongly worded to the president that that would happen.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Donoghue also sought to dissuade Trump from believing that Clark had the legal background to do as the president wished since he was not a criminal prosecutor at the department.

“And he kind of retorted by saying, ‘Well, I’ve done a lot of very complicated appeals and civil litigation, environmental litigation, and things like that,’” Donoghue said. “And I said, ‘That’s right. You’re an environmental lawyer. How about you go back to your office, and we’ll call you when there’s an oil spill.’”

Biden is presiding over an inquisition against white Americans. He has expressed his support for Critical Race Theory, which argues that the U.S. is inherently racist, that minorities are oppressed by whites and especially white men, and that white people achieve their economic and political objectives at the expense of people of color. CRT is in direct opposition to the aims of the Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King’s emphasis on judging people based on the quality of their character rather than the color of their skin.

Blaming white supremacy has become the new national sport. Under the guise of ending oppression, Biden and the Democratic Party want to remake whites into the new underclass. Giving special treatment to any one group is in violation of the equal protection clause. It is also the worst kind of racism. Blaming current social problems on alleged white oppression heightens racial tensions and keeps the country divided. Division seems to be Biden’s objective. For that reason alone, he should be impeached.

Trump was at the center of an attempted coup said...

As the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol has built its public case that Donald Trump was at the center of an attempted coup, the panel has relied heavily on a seemingly unlikely stream of witnesses: Trump’s own advisers, his fellow Republicans and even his own family.

Those closest to Trump have been deposed, portrayed or shown dismissing the former president’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. And yet the fight to thwart the will of the people continued unabated.

The powerful testimony from a parade of Republicans, in four tightly produced hearings, has exposed in searing and consequential detail how divided the party has become between the faction that accepts the reality of the 2020 election and the many more who still cling to Trump’s anti-democratic falsehoods about a stolen election.

“If any Republicans were watching it, there is really no way they could defend a position that President Trump won the election based on the evidence presented so far,” said Mick Mulvaney, a former acting White House chief of staff to Trump.

We know something about serious threats to America's democracy.

Each of us has invested the better part of our lives in military and public service, and in defense of the democratic institutions that Americans cherish. Our careers have placed us on the front lines of the gravest threats America has faced in the past half-century.

Today, we harbor unprecedented concern for our country and for our democracy. The nation we have defended for decades is in real peril.

Our democratic institutions and norms are more vulnerable than ever. If you were to ask us when in our lives we were most likely to be losing sleep at night, we would all tell you, "Last night. And tonight. And tomorrow night.” Because history teaches us that democracy is never guaranteed, not even here.

Domestic threats more dangerous than foreign adversaries.

For those of us devoted to protecting democracies abroad, there comes a time when our efforts seem overshadowed by the erosion of democracy here at home. And for those of us focused on domestic security, the forces of autocracy now trump traditional foreign threats, hands down.

It is no accident that 1 in 3 Americans seem willing to justify political violence as a means for overturning election results. This mindset has been nurtured by would-be autocrats and their enablers, who applaud the willingness of some Americans to rise up, even with weapons in hand, to "take back" a vision of America that's riddled with contradictions, prejudices and systemic inequalities.

For the rest of us, that willingness is a harbinger of a decades-long challenge that we now face together – to turn the tide of extremism, and to find a starting point for building bridges between those who lean to the right and those who lean to the left.

We are proud to have signed this nonpartisan declaration, and we encourage every local, state and federal official, especially those who achieved (or hope to achieve) their position through the electoral process, to make this same commitment. We and our many partners and friends will personally invite every member of Congress to join us in signing this pledge.

For those who do, we will be forever grateful, and Americans who cherish our democracy will be grateful, too. For those who don't, we and others will wonder why. And ask why. And keep asking until there's no room for ambiguity.

In 2020, Spencer Cox, a Republican, and Chris Peterson, a Democrat, competed in the Utah gubernatorial race. Politically, they agreed on almost nothing. They shared a profound respect for democratic institutions and lawful electoral process. They said so, in combined campaign ads promoting mutual respect, cooperation and peaceful transfer of power no matter who wins.

The FBI had a busy Wednesday. As the January 6 committee has publicly aired more and more evidence of Donald Trump’s plot to overturn the 2020 election result by creating slates of “alternate electors” and trying to get Vice-President Mike Pence to use them to block the certification of Joe Biden’s victory, agents have been executing search warrants and serving subpoenas to Republican officials allegedly involved in the plot.

These include the top Republican party official in Nevada, Michael McDonald. Agents seized his phone when they executed a search warrant on Wednesday that 8 News Now said was in connection with his involvement in creating a list of fake electors. The FBI was also looking for the state party’s secretary James DeGraffenreid, the Las Vegas outlet reported. Biden won Nevada, but the state Republican party nonetheless had its electoral college voters create fake, non-legally binding certificates saying Trump won the state, according to 8 News Now.

Agents also visited the home of Brad Carver, a lawyer in Georgia who signed a document saying he was a Trump elector, and Thomas Lane, who worked for the former president in Arizona and New Mexico, The Washington Post reported. The Georgia GOP chair, David Shafer, also received a subpoena, as did a group people who claimed to be Trump electors in Michigan, the newspaper reported.

Separately, a top justice department official during Trump’s final weeks in office has said that there was no fraud in the 2020 election. “Some argued to the former president and public that the election was corrupt and stolen,” Jeffrey Rosen, the acting attorney general during the attack on the Capitol, said in opening remarks to the January 6 committee obtained by the Associated Press.

“That view was wrong then and it is wrong today, and I hope our presence here today helps reaffirm that fact.”

Rosen will be a witness during today’s hearing.

I agree with the Supreme Court decision

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Constitution provides a right to carry a gun outside the home, issuing a major decision on the meaning of the Second Amendment.

The 6-3 ruling was the court’s second important decision on the right to “keep and bear arms.” In a landmark 2008 decision, the court said for the first time that the amendment safeguards a person’s right to possess firearms, although the decision was limited to keeping guns at home for self-defense.

The court has now taken that ruling to the next step after years of ducking the issue and applied the Second Amendment beyond the limits of homeowners’ property.

Not one witness on the Jan 6th kangaroo court would hold up 5 minutes under cross examination.

That's why they won't allow any.

What do you call a court without cross-examination

or even the release of evidence such as the 14,000 hours of video evidence ?

or the details of already admitted FBI involvement ?

or any probing of Nancy Pelosi who was in charge of the failed security ?

or a status update under oath of the "pipe bomber" ?

or real reporting on the deaths of the Trump supporters by Capitol Police ?

The justices said the requirement violates the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”

Both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House select committee, as well as news organizations, have reported in depth on Trump's pressure campaign against the Justice Department, but aides to the panel said Thursday's hearing will reveal evidence that has not yet been shown.

Why is the "justice" department withholding so much evidence ?

Would roger be fine if police departments decided what video to release and what video to withhold ?

and not have to answer for their actions ?
