This looks glum for the left....

Perhaps that Jan 6th production will change everything?

So according to this map, even if the GOP only one the seats they are favored in, they would take control of the Senate by a 223-212 margin. More likely than not they win quite a few of those toss up seats as well and expand on that margin.

First thing they will do... put together a partisan Jan 6th commission that looks into why Nancy Pelosi refused multiple requests by people to beef up security and to get to the bottom of how many FBI plants were actually in the crowd.

In this regard, Congress's January 6 Committee and the Department of Justice's persecution of Trump supporters for their political beliefs is a classic attempt by government to control society not at all different than the Soviets' use of gulags or the Nazis' use of concentration camps.  The purpose is to silence certain people in society, so that their thoughts are kept from "spreading" to others.  If people were to actually hear the message of those protesters at the U.S. Capitol — that the 2020 presidential election was a total fraud and an extension of the Deep State's four-year running-coup against President Trump — the American people might actually demand new elections.  Even more dangerously, publicly voiced inputs of information questioning the legitimacy of the federal bureaucracy's permanent power over the American people might lead more and more Americans to demand revolutionary changes to an inherently corrupt system.  If D.C. throws the righteous in prison, silences their voices, and defames their good names, then fewer Americans will hear their message or learn from it.

When thoughts are understood as "inputs" that can "spread," then it is easy to see why governments have an incentive to keep us isolated from each other.  Locking people down in their homes under the guise of viral pandemics or "urgent" climate change "emergencies" strengthens government's ability to monitor what information we learn.  If freedom of association is outlawed and citizens are kept apart, then information normally exchanged through human interaction disappears.  If government agents control social media platforms and corporate news, then they control our information inputs.  Our preferences and potential actions are constrained by government's monopoly over what we learn.  For two years, most of us have experienced some version of this tactic.  Although it has been quite real for us, it has mostly been a practice run for more rigid control down the road.

It's happening again and again and again and again
Authorities in Maryland scrambled on Thursday to respond to a mass shooting in Smithsfield.

At least three people were killed and a Maryland state trooper was wounded in the shooting, according to ABC 7 News reported. "A Maryland State Police trooper located the man, at which time the suspect shot at the trooper, striking him in the shoulder, a source told 7News. The trooper returned fire striking the subject, the source said."

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the shooter was "no longer a threat to the community."

The shooting took place at the Columbia Machine manufacturing plant.

Jan. 6 hearing to provide opening argument, focus on far-right groups

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

More than 1,000 interviews and 140,000 documents later, the House committee that has spent nearly a year investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol will begin to present its findings to the American public with a hearing Thursday night.

The hearing, which broadcast networks will clear their prime-time schedule to air, is the first in a series this month that will together lay out evidence not only of what happened on the day of the attack, but also in the two months that preceded it as then-President Donald Trump led an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) and Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) will lead the evening’s presentation, which will feature live testimony from Caroline Edwards, a U.S. Capitol Police officer who was seriously injured as pro-Trump rioters and members of far-right extremist groups forced their way into the building.

They were not just good people from both sides 🙄

Women will see how dangerous he is

Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos spoke about her decision to resign from the Trump administration after the Capitol riots in an interview with USA Today, saying the events of Jan. 6 made it "obvious" to her she couldn't continue in her role.

Driving the news: DeVos, one of the longest-serving members of Trump's Cabinet, confirmed to USA Today she spoke with Pence about invoking the 25th Amendment.

In her resignation letter to Trump, DeVos wrote, "There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me.”

The big picture: DeVos dove deeper into the reasoning behind her resignation in her upcoming book, "Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child."

"To me, there was a line in the sand. It wasn’t about the election results. It was about the values and image of the United States. It was about public service rising above self. The president had lost sight of that," she wrote in the book, per USA Today.DeVos told USA Today that in the aftermath of the Capitol riot she spoke to former Vice President Mike Pence and other colleagues about the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, but that Pence "made it very clear that he was not going to go in that direction."

What she's saying: Trump's obsession with the results of the 2020 election mean that his "mind was elsewhere" and that "most of the staff in the White House was trying to respond and react and deal with that," DeVos said in the interview.

"I really felt that everything I could accomplish in office had been accomplished based on that reality and that dynamic," she said.“When I saw what was happening on Jan. 6 and didn’t see the president step in and do what he could have done to turn it back or slow it down or really address the situation, it was just obvious to me that I couldn’t continue."“I was thinking about the kids I was there to represent, and what they are seeing and what they are taking away from this — it was not defensible in any way.”

Police shoot man 'aggressively trying' to get into Alabama elementary school, police say

GADSDEN, Ala. (TND) — A man tried to enter an Alabama elementary school Thursday morning and was shot, according to officials.

Details about the incident were not disclosed, but authorities said all children at Walnut Park Elementary School in Gadsden were safe.

Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick told WBMA a man was "aggressively trying" to get into the building. Reddick said the man went to several doors trying to get inside the school. When the principal saw this, they locked down the school. The school resource officer was called and then requested more backup.

All they need is intent

Prosecutors don't need Donald Trump to dramatically confess on the stand in order to convict him. All they need is to show that he intended to undermine the counting of electoral votes. That is already evident and will be further substantiated by the mountain of evidence that the Jan. 6 committee has amassed and will present to the American public.

As a federal judge in California has already found, there is significant evidence that Trump and his close advisers committed criminal offenses in the course of their plot to overturn the people's vote in the 2020 election. His intent will become even clearer through the evidence presented in this month's hearings. We hope that will embolden prosecutors to overcome their caution and move forward with criminal charges.

Thursday’s prime-time hearing will open with eyewitness testimony from the first police officer pummeled in the mob riot and from a documentary filmmaker tracking the extremist Proud Boys, who prepared to fight for Trump immediately after the election and led the storming of the Capitol.

The videos have a lot more evidence of violence and assault on police officers..

Former President Donald Trump seemed to support threats from rioters to hang the former vice president during the attack on the Capitol, saying ‘Mike Pence deserves it,’

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) on Thursday laid blame directly on former President Trump for the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, saying during the House select committee’s hearing that Trump “summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.”

“Those who invaded our Capitol and battled law enforcement for hours were motivated by what President Trump had told them: that the election was stolen, and that he was the rightful president,”

The role of the militia groups in the story of January 6 is important because they specifically planned to storm the Capitol to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election win – what Trump wanted and needed after his other efforts to overturn the election failed.

The chairman of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection and Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election declared at Thursday’s prime-time hearing that the attack was an “attempted coup” that put “two and half centuries of constitutional democracy at risk.”

Barr said in the clip that he recalled speaking to Trump about the issue on at least three occasions in November and December 2020.

And that’s one of the reasons that went into me deciding to leave when I did.”

Jan. 6 Panel Seeks to Cast Capitol Attack as Watershed Moment

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) set the tone of the hearing with a truly extraordinary opening statement: “It was domestic enemies of the Constitution who stormed the Capitol.”

And he made clear that Domestic Enemy Number One was Donald Trump.

Thompson continued: “Donald Trump was at the center of a conspiracy to spur a mob of domestic enemies to march to the Capitol to subvert American democracy. January 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup to overthrow the government.”

Thompson handed the baton to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who was truly extraordinary. She proved herself a remarkably effective communicator, synthesizing video and written evidence clearly, succinctly and dispassionately.

And she also absolutely tore apart the former president: “Trump did not condemn the attack, he justified it… as you will see President Trump believed his supporters were ‘doing what he should be doing.’ This is what he told his staff.”

Cheney noted that when Trump was told by staff of the very real threat of a mob murdering Vice President Mike Pence, Trump responded: “Maybe he deserves it.”

She concluded that Trump “summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The video of depositions interspersed throughout was also extraordinarily effective. It showed Trump loyalists — many of whom claim to remain close to the former president to this day — turning against Trump himself when under oath.

The immediate effect will be to isolate Trump from his advisors — perhaps even his own daughter, who testified under oath that she believed her father lost the election.

There were also bombshells: Cheney pledged to provide proof that Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) and “multiple other Republican congressmen” sought pardons from Trump for their actions after January 6. That’s an extraordinary charge.

And another: The Proud Boys were positioning to seize the Capitol while Trump was still speaking at the rally.

And another: A new video showed a rioter reading a Trump tweet to the mob which incited the chant: “Hang Mike Pence!”

And one more: The Department of Justice is working with “cooperating witnesses,” confirming a criminal investigation is underway.

But tonight was just a preview. The coming hearings will attempt to detail that:

Trump knew he lost the election but actively pushed the Big Lie anyway.Trump tried to replace Attorney General Bill Barr to force the Department of Justice to keep him in officeTrump pressured Vice President Mike Pence to ignore his constitutional responsibility in certifying the electoral vote.Trump pressured state election officials to overturn the election results.

We’ll see how the remaining hearings play out, but it’s already clear that there will be enormous pressure on Attorney General Merrick Garland as a result.

The committee is laying out what amounts to a criminal case against Trump.
