Steve Bannon’s Gambit Put Him in New Legal Jeopardy
July 12, 2022 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 143 Comments

“What started as a Steve Bannon public relations stunt may have just ended as a spectacular self-own,” the Daily Beast reports.

“After nine months of refusing to answer the House Jan. 6 Committee’s questions—and fighting off related criminal contempt charges in court—the right-wing provocateur is suddenly dangling an offer to finally testify. The gambit is supposed to make the Justice Department look bad. But doing so on the eve of trial risks having him incriminate himself before Congress, then get convicted the very next week.”

“Now Bannon is barreling toward a trial while dangling potential testimony before the congressional panel—a prime opportunity to perjure himself or explain why he broke the law—and lawyers say there’s practically nothing he can do that won’t land him in even more legal jeopardy.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Jan. 6 committee is set to highlight the way violent far-right extremists answered Donald Trump’s “siren call” to come to Washington for a big rally, as some now face rare sedition charges over the deadly U.S. Capitol attack and effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

The panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol siege convenes Tuesday for a public hearing probing what it calls the final phase of Trump’s multi-pronged effort to halt Joe Biden’s victory. As dozens of lawsuits and false claims of voter fraud fizzled, Trump tweeted the rally invitation, a pivotal moment, the committee said. The far-right Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and others now facing criminal charges readily answered.

“We will lay out the body of evidence that we have that talks about how the president’s tweet on the wee hours of December 19th of ‘Be there, be wild,’ was a siren call to these folks,” said one panel member, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., over the weekend on “Meet the Press.” In fact, Trump tweeted, “Be there, will be wild!”

I suspect that we will see another extraordinary event exposed.

If they find a direct contact between the White House and or the former President with The Proud Boys, it will put pressure on the Department of Justice.

A select committee aide said the members would focus on a meeting held on 18 December 2020, with the president and members of his legal team, including Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell.

At that point, there was a growing schism within Trump’s inner circle between those who believed it was time for the president to accept his electoral defeat and those who pushed even more radical actions such as seizing voting machines or appointing a special counsel to investigate the election.

Hours after the meeting, Trump sent a tweet that Murphy perceived as a “siren call” to militia groups that 6 January 2021, would be the “last stand” in a sprawling effort to overturn the results of an election he lost.

“Big protest in DC on January 6th,” Trump wrote in that December tweet. “Be there, will be wild!”

The tweet was a “pivotal moment that spurred a change of events including a pre-planning by the Proud Boys”, the aide said.

Tuesday’s hearing is the only public session the committee will hold this week. At least one more hearing is planned, likely for next week, committee aides said.

“We are going to be connecting the dots during these hearings between these groups and those who were trying – in government circles – to overturn the election,” congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California and a member of the panel, said in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union show on Sunday. “We do think that this story is unfolding in a way that is very serious and quite credible.”

She added that it would be “a logical conclusion” that Trump was aware members of the violent militia groups were among those gathered at a rally on the Ellipse near the White House on the morning of January 6, when he addressed the crowd and encouraged them to march to the Capitol.

What to watch: Jason Van Tatenhove, a former spokesperson for the Oath Keepers, is expected to appear as a witness, according to multiple media outlets.

Van Tatenhove was not at the riot, but he is set to testify on the group's radicalization over the years, NBC News reports. The hearing is also expected to include taped testimony from Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone's closed-door interview with the committee last week.

The very wording with which this hearing is beginning is absolutely amazing. NO president has ever, ever, ever attempted to do what Donald Trump attempted to do, even after constantly being given proof by his own most honest advisers that he had absolutely NO legitimate reason to attempt what he continued to attempt.

His own advisors said was Trump “detached from reality,” clinging to his false claims of voter fraud and working feverishly to reverse his election defeat. It all culminated with the deadly attack on the Capitol, the committee said.

Cheney reiterated that Trump was told “over and over again” in the weeks leading up to January 6 that he had fairly lost the presidential election to Joe Biden.

“No rational or sane man in his position could disregard that information and reach the opposite conclusion,” Cheney said. “And Donald Trump cannot escape responsibility by being willfully blind.”

Cipollone makes first (virtual) appearance at hearing

The committee showed the first clip from Pat Cipollone’s interview with investigators, which took place behind closed doors on Friday.

In the clip, Cipollone, who served as Donald Trump’s White House counsel, confirmed that he had seen no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

According to Cipollone, Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff, assured him and William Barr, the former attorney general, that the then president would concede the election after the electoral college met to finalize Joe Biden’s victory.

Instead, Trump continued to peddle lies about election fraud, and those lies culminated in the deadly attack on the Capitol on January 6.

Scott still believes the big lie 😪

Cipollone denounced 'terrible idea' to seize voting machines

Pat Cipollone denounced an idea from Sidney Powell, one of Donald Trump’s campaign lawyers, to seize voting machines in battleground states after the 2020 election.

Cipollone, Trump’s former White House counsel, said he believed the suggestion was a “terrible idea” that could sow distrust in American elections.

“To have the federal government seize voting machines, it’s a terrible idea,” Cipollone told the January 6 committee. “That is not how we do things in the United States. There’s no legal authority.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The January 6 hearing included detailed descriptions of an alarming, tense meeting at the White House on 18 December, as Donald Trump continued to peddle lies about widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

During the meeting, Trump campaign lawyers Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani and former national security adviser Michael Flynn urged the then-president to seize voting machines in battleground states.

That idea was sharply criticized by senior administration officials, including Trump adviser Eric Herschmann, who said he considered the suggestions to be “nuts”.

The meeting then devolved into insults and shouting, as Powell’s group implied that critics like Herschmann did not have the courage to overturn the election.

Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, described the atmosphere in the West Wing on 18 December as “unhinged”.

Later that evening, Hutchinson took a photo of Meadows escorting Giuliani off White House grounds to ensure he did not “wander back to the mansion,” as she said.

The day after this explosive meeting, Trump sent a tweet encouraging his supporters to come to Washington on January 6. “Be there.. will be wild,” Trump said.

The Jan. 6 committee showed video testimony by participants in a meeting described as "the craziest" of Donald Trump's presidency.

Right-wing attorneys Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani, along with former national security adviser Mike Flynn, pressed the former president to seize voting machines and appoint Powell as special counsel to investigate baseless claims of voter fraud, but White House counsel Pat Cipollone and other advisers told them the claims were unfounded and their scheme unlawful.

The unscheduled Dec. 18, 2020, meeting lasted for about six hours and concluded with a tweet from Trump urging supporters to come to Washington, D.C., for a "wild" protest on the day Congress was set to certify Joe Biden as the election winner.

The House select committee spoke to several participants in the meeting, and their video testimony was shown during Tuesday afternoon's public hearing.

The day after a particularly crazy White House meeting, Trump sent his infamous tweet calling his supporters to a “big protest in D.C.” and instructed them to “be there, will be wild.”

The committee then played a montage of clips from right wing media showing Trump’s message resonated loudly. A Twitter employee testified that the company felt Trump was speaking directly to extremist groups on Twitter and that “a mob was being organized.”

The implication of this testimony was that Trump’s frustration at his staff had boiled over and that he was taking matters into his own hands.

Trump had summoned the mob.

Several former Trump aides told the Jan. 6 committee they believed Dec. 14, 2020 — the date electors met to cast electoral votes consistent with the popular vote in their states — would or should have stopped President Donald Trump’s efforts, according to recorded testimony played at Tuesday’s hearing.

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told the committee that “upon the conclusion of litigation was when I began to plan for life after the administration.”

Ivanka Trump, Trump’s daughter and a senior adviser to the president, was asked if Dec. 14 was also “an important day” for her to that effect and if she realized then there was going to be an end to her father’s administration.

“I think it was my sentiment, probably prior as well,” she said.

Judd Deere, a former deputy White House press secretary, testified that he had told Donald Trump that “the means for him to pursue litigation was probably closed” after the electoral college had met.

Trump told Deere then that he disagreed, Deere testified.

The January 6 hearing resumed after a short break, and committee member Jamie Raskin shared additional information about collaboration between far-right extremist groups in the weeks leading up to the Capitol attack.

Raskin displayed a Facebook post written by Oath Keepers leader Kelly Meggs on 19 December, the same day that Donald Trump sent a tweet encouraging his supporters to come to Washington on January 6 for a “wild” event.

In the post, Meggs said he had organized an “alliance” between the Oath Keepers and two other far-right militia groups, the Three Percenters and the Proud Boys.

“We have decided to work together and shut this shit down,” Meggs said in the post.

Raskin said the committee had obtained phone records showing that Meggs spoke with Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio for several minutes later that afternoon.

“The very next day, the Proud Boys got to work,” Raskin said.

Van Tatenhove previously served as a spokesperson for the Oath Keepers, one of the far-right groups that helped carry out the violence on January 6, although he left that role before the insurrection took place.

The select committee shared evidence indicating that Donald Trump’s 19 December tweet urging his supporters to come to Washington on January 6 led to increased attention on that particular day.

Committee member Jamie Raskin showed a request from the pro-Trump group Women for America First to change its Washington rally permit to January 6 after the then-president sent his tweet about the event.

An anonymous Twitter employee told the committee that Trump’s tweet coincided with an increase in violent rhetoric among his supporters online.

One Trump supporter promised there would be “a red wedding going down January 6”. That is a Game of Thrones reference to a wedding where many of the attendees are murdered.

Murphy said, “The evidence confirms that this was not a spontaneous call to action, but rather a deliberate strategy decided upon in advance by the president.”

Hey Roger...

Even I believe that by the time Jan 6th rolled around that Trump should have conceded the election. I still think he does himself a disservice by bringing up 2020.

That doesn't mean that the problems in Wisconsin (now confirmed by a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision) were not real, or the problems in Georgia were not real (also confirmed by many court cases), or the problems in Arizona, Pennsylvania and others were not real.

You can both be smart enough to realize that the 2020 election was a joke of an election (the least secure and most fraudulent election ever) and that there is little good in rehashing it.

Better to do what they have done in Georgia (by passing new laws and replacing the County workers in DeKalb and Fulton with third party counters) and Wisconsin (winning court cases which will prevent their illegal cheating from happening in 2022)... and other states where new laws will make for more secure elections and less fraud.

Just no good in rehashing it. Move on and improve as many states have effectively done (much to the total meltdown of the left). That Wisconsin decision was A GREAT WIN FOR DEMOCRACY and a horrible loss for cheaters.

Liz Cheney, the Republican vice-chair of the January 6 committee, said that Donald Trump himself tried to contact one of the witnesses in the investigation.

According to Cheney, the witness, who has not yet been publicly revealed as a participant in the committee’s investigation, declined the call.

Instead, the witness informed their lawyer about Trump’s attempted call. The lawyer then informed the January 6 committee, who passed the information along to the justice department.

“Let me say one more time: we will take any efforts to influence witness testimony very seriously,” Cheney said.

Cheney warned at the last hearing that at least two witnesses had been contacted by Trump allies urging them to stay loyal to the former president in their testimony to the committee.

Those efforts raise questions about potential witness tampering, which could open Trump and his allies up to criminal charges.

As bad as we thought the January 6 insurrection was, we learned today that it was much, much worse.

Trump not only summoned the mob, as we learned in the first half of today’s hearing, but he planned ahead of time to unleash them on the Capitol to disrupt the counting of electoral votes.

The committee showed a draft tweet that Trump never sent, in which he was going to direct people to march to the Capitol from the riot. Texts between staffers also showed they also knew of Trump’s plan.

We also learned that just after Steve Bannon spoke to Trump on the phone on January 5, Bannon informed his podcast listeners that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow.”

This is particularly important because the committee established earlier that Trump knew many in the rally crowd were armed.

The plan was always to march on the Capitol. And Trump knew there would be violence.

The idea raised by some Trump allies that the rally spontaneously and accidentally turned violent is simply not true. Trump incited the attack.

Stephen Ayres, who stormed the Capitol that day, told the committee: “Basically the president got everybody riled up, told everybody to head on down. So we were basically just following what he said.”

As an exasperated former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale later described the events in an extraordinary text to Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson: “A sitting president asking for civil war. This week I feel guilty for helping him win.”

Wisconsin, Georgia are just two states where court cases have verified that the elections were not run by state laws and that ballots that should not have been counted were counted.

There is an ongoing battle in Georgia regarding differences between physical ballot counts and the reported totals (reported totals showing more ballots than physically exist).

As Scott Adams states:

Gaslight examples:

You can prove something doesn't exist by not looking for it.

or in your case... by not looking for it and ignoring what is provided directly to you... double gaslight!

But hey...

You can be part of that shrinking minority who still believes that Joe Biden got 81 million legitimate votes and 2020 was the most secure election ever.

You know... whatever helps you sleep at night!

BREAKING UPDATE: Maricopa County Republican Committee Votes UNANIMOUSLY To Reject Fraudulent 2020 Election Results

The Maricopa County Republican Committee Executive Governance Committee voted unanimously in a voice vote to officially reject the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election.

Similar resolutions have passed unanimously in Wisconsin and Texas.

WHEREAS We believe the 2020 Election violated Article 1 and 2 of the US Constitution, that various secretaries of state illegally circumvented their state legislatures in conducting their elections in multiple incorrect ways, including allowing ballots to be received after November 3, 2020;

WHEREAS The 2000 Mules Documentary irrefutably proves election fraud occurred in Maricopa County during the 2020 Election in the form of ballot trafficking through drop boxes;

WHEREAS We believe that substantial election fraud in key metropolitan areas significantly affected the results in five key states in favor of Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.;

WHEREAS The Arizona Senate audit of the 2020 Election found significant inconsistencies and discrepancies;

NOW, THEREFORE, We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States. We strongly urge all Republicans to work to ensure election integrity and correct all fraud and weaknesses identified in the 2020 Election.

Nope... never said that and never believed that.

Courts are "largely" irrelevant to election challenges because of the safe harbor dates. They generally are only able to confirm or deny something after the fact.

For example.

The fact that Wisconsin stated that the 2020 election was generally run outside of the boundaries of the state law and that the 2022 election cannot be run the same way...

Is no less of an indictment on the 2020 election simply because the court did not make some ruling to "overturn" the certification. Although the legislation certainly could. r

You can all the illogical arguments you want.

Wisconsin's 2020 election was run outside of the boundaries of state law and that was proven in court. The "timing" of it is irrelevant to the final call by the courts!

Trump made 'deliberate' plan to call for march to the Capital

Committee member Stephanie Murphy shared a draft tweet written by Donald Trump encouraging his supporters to march to the Capitol on January 6.

“I will be making a Big Speech at 10AM on January 6th at the Ellipse (South of the White House),” the draft tweet says. “Please arrive early, massive crowds expected. March to the Capitol after. Stop the Steal!!”

The draft tweet, obtained by the committee from the National Archives, was undated, but it was stamped with the words “president has seen”.

Murphy said, “The evidence confirms that this was not a spontaneous call to action, but rather a deliberate strategy decided upon in advance by the president.”

The committee also showed messages from some of the January 6 rally organizers indicating that they knew of the plans to march to the Capitol but kept them quiet.

Rally organizer Kylie Kremer said in one message that Trump was just going to call for the march to the Capitol “unexpectedly”.

A crush of evidence was presented today.

WASHINGTON, DC – JULY 12: Jason Van Tatenhove, who served as national spokesman for the Oath Keepers and as a close aide to Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, appears for testimony during the seventh hearing by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon House Office Building on July 12, 2022, in Washington, DC.

The former national spokesman for the Oath Keepers who acted as a close aide to its leader Stewart Rhodes appeared before the Jan. 6 Committee on Tuesday for the second half of its hearing untangling Donald Trump‘s ties to extremist groups.

“They may not like to call themselves a militia, but they are,” Jason Van Tatenhove testified on Tuesday, calling them a “violent” and “dangerous” group largely centered around Rhodes’s “ego and drive.”

As the group “drifted further and further right into the alt-right,” the witness saw signs of the Oath Keepers devolving into “white nationalists and even straight up racist” ideology.

“It came to a point where I could no longer work or them,” Van Tatenhove said.

He said that breaking point came after encountering Holocaust deniers as Oath Keepers associates. He has said that he has not been involved with the group for years.

“I think we need to stop mincing words and talk about truths, and what it was going to be was an armed revolution,” Van Tatenhove said. “I mean, people died that day. Law enforcement died that day. There was a gallows set up in front of the Capitol. This could have been the spark that started a new civil war, and no one would have won there. That would have been good for no one.”

The people you support are Holocaust deniers and of course Trump said that Obama was born in Kenya 🇰🇪

Mother Jones has leaked audio showing that on October 31, 2020, Steve Bannon “told a group of associates that President Donald Trump had a plan to declare victory on election night—even if he was losing.

“Trump knew that the slow counting of Democratic-leaning mail-in ballots meant the returns would show early leads for him in key states. His ‘strategy’ was to use this fact to assert that he had won, while claiming that the inevitable shifts in vote totals toward Joe Biden must be the result of fraud, Bannon explained.”

Tuesday's January 6 Committee hearing featured dramatic testimony about a fateful White House meeting that began Dec. 18 and continued past midnight – featuring angry clashes between outside advisors who bought Donald Trump's election fraud claims and advisors who called them absurd.

The meeting involved a 'heated and profane clash,' said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), a former impeachment manager who discussed the meting, which came weeks before the Jan. 6, 2020 Capitol riot.

'The Select Committee has spoken with six of the participants as well as staffers who could hear the screaming from outside the Oval Office,' said Raskin.

'What ensued was a heated and profane clash between this group and President Trump's White House advisors who traded personal insults, accusations of disloyalty to the President, and even challenges to physically fight,' he said.

Members of the Jan. 6 panel played short testimony clips of witnesses describing that meeting, which began in the Oval Office and continued inside another oval shaped room in the White House residence.

It came four days after the members of the electoral college had met Dec. 14 to cast their votes for president – an event that former Attorney General Bill Barr and others took as a signal that Trump's opportunity to prevail over Joe Biden was formally over.

You really believe that he was gaslighted.

Long before the attack on the Capitol, Trump appears to have known about the extremist groups who led it. Soon after the election, Trump confidantes Michael Flynn and Roger Stone were in close contact with the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. Both continued their contacts. On January 5, Flynn told extremists gathered near the White House: “Tomorrow we the people are going to be here, and we will not stand for a lie.” On Jan 6, Stone was guarded by two Oath Keepers. Katrina Pierson, former campaign spokesperson for Trump, warned Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff, about the “crazies” who were coming to Washington. Meadows told her “he likes crazies,” who Meadows defined as “people who will viciously defend [Trump] in public.”

2. Trump was seeking any possible justification for asserting the election was stolen, no matter how wild. On the evening of December 18, Trump met secretly with three people who had no formal role in the White House nor any appointment to be in the Oval Office -- Sidney Powell, Michael Flynn, and Rudy Giuliani — to discuss ways to reverse the outcome of the election. They spoke about supposed plots concerning Dominion voting machines, Venezuela, and China. When White House legal advisors including White House Counsel Pat Cipollini got wind of this meeting, they joined it, and asked for evidence that the election was stolen – which prompted shouting and insults. Giuliani called the White House legal advisers “a bunch of pussies.” Trump said that Powell, Flynn, and Giuliani were offering solutions, while the White House lawyers were not. The meeting continued for six hours in various rooms. White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson called the meeting “unhinged.” Trump wanted to grant Powell security clearance and make her a special counsel. Cipollini said she wasn’t appointed to anything, although she was of view she had been appointed and should be appointed.

January 6 hearing makes it clear: MAGA is a cult — and Trump is their fascist pied piper.

"President Trump is a 76-year-old man. He is not an impressionable child."

The seventh of the summer's public hearings for the January 6th committee opened with Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., issuing a blunt rebuttal of what has become a popular denial of Donald Trump's responsibility for the Capitol insurrection: Trump is just too dumb to have known what he was doing.

The argument is that all of the lies about the election were not, as they seem, a deliberate attempt to incite an insurrection. That all of his links to extremist groups who stormed the Capitol are just a remarkable coincidence. That all of his behavior was merely an incoherent tantrum of an idiot man-child who was just unfortunately misinterpreted by his loyal supporters. That Trump is merely an innocent victim of the rioters who took things too far.

But, as Cheney's opening statement made clear, the committee is asserting the opposite. Trump is a sinister cult leader who knowingly exploited his gullible followers into rioting on his behalf.

What the committee hearing on Tuesday made clear is that Trump viewed his supporters as mere instruments in his quest for illegally obtained power. He cared not one whit how much damage he inflicted on his supporters.

"These Americans did not have access to the truth," Cheney said of the Big Lie believers. "They put their faith, their trust, in Donald Trump ... he deceived them."

The same tribalism and self-deception that led these two men to extreme lengths is endemic in the world of Republican voters.

To be sure, there's a genuine tension there. Painting Trump as a mastermind who knows what he is doing, but portraying his followers — or a good chunk of them, anyway — as mere dupes feels like a contradiction. If the Big Lie is so obviously false that Trump didn't believe it, then why would his followers believe it? Or, conversely, if his followers convinced themselves the Big Lie was real, then why couldn't Trump have done the same? Isn't it simpler to just view Trump and his followers as like-minded liars, people who collectively agree on falsehood in order to achieve their political ends?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

You have become a cultists like in the 20th century in Europe 🇪🇺

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Of course, there's a political reason for drawing a distinction between Trump-the-knowing-liar and his duped followers. Over 74 million Americans voted for Trump. Dismissing them all as irredeemable fascists is not good politics, especially when the goal is to counter the civil war-style political rhetoric that Trump and his allies have engaged in. As committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., noted, "We settle our " That is a much easier proposition to return to if Trump voters are allowed an offramp narrative about how they never meant to back a fascist revolt against democracy

You don't want to handle differences at the ballot box.

Uncensored Roger said...

CNBC

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot showed in its latest hearing how violent right-wing extremist groups were spurred toward Washington as part of former President Donald Trump’s campaign to try to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden.

The committee also turned its spotlight on the turmoil that engulfed the White House weeks before the insurrection, as administration officials clashed bitterly with Trump’s allies over the election results.

The panel’s seventh public hearing focused on how Trump’s attention turned toward the pivotal date of Jan. 6, 2021, after his other efforts to challenge the 2020 election outcome — pressuring state-level officials, Department of Justice leaders and others — failed to secure a win.

The hearing featured a bevy of video testimony from White House counsel Pat Cipollone, a highly sought-after witness at the center of the probe who met with investigators just four days earlier. Two witnesses, former Oath Keepers spokesman Jason Van Tatenhove and Jan. 6 defendant Stephen Ayres, testified in person.

At the end of the hearing, Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., revealed that the committee has notified the Department of Justice about an attempt by Trump to call a yet-to-be-named witness. “We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously,” Cheney wrote.

LIVEJan. 6 Panel Hearings

The former C.E.O. of Overstock is expected to speak to investigators.

July 12, 2022, 5:50 p.m. ET2 hours ago

Jeremy W. Peters and Luke Broadwater

Patrick Byrne, the former chief executive of Overstock.com who was present at a meeting that became a focal point of Tuesday’s hearing, is expected to speak on Friday with the House select committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, said the committee’s chairman, Representative Bennie Thompson.

Mr. Byrne was at a meeting on Dec. 18, 2020, in which Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser, and Sidney Powell, the pro-Trump lawyer, pressed to seize voting machines and name Ms. Powell as a special counsel to work to overturn the election.

“He’ll be here for a transcribed interview,” Mr. Thompson said. “We’re looking forward to that. He was one of the people in the White House late night talking about the stop the steal rally and other things.”

Mr. Byrne stood out as a vocal purveyor of conspiracy theories even before he was among those who surrounded Trump in his final days as president. He lost his job at Overstock in 2019 after releasing a statement with references to the “Deep State” and “Men in Black” in which he said he had been romantically involved with Maria Butina, a woman accused of being a Russian spy. Ms. Butina, who tried to befriend politically powerful people before the 2016 election, spent more than a year in prison for conspiring to act as a foreign agent.

Then Mr. Byrne showed up at the White House in December 2020 — at whose invitation is unclear. According to a long and digressive blog post he published after the meeting, he wrote that he had urged Mr. Trump to “‘find’ that there was adequate evidence of foreign interference with the election” so that the president could use his powers to direct federal law enforcement to get involved with vote-counting.

He wrote that Mr. Trump responded, “Knowing I was cheated, that they rigged this election? How can I just walk away from that?”

'NOT TOUGH ENOUGH'

The committee played recorded testimony from White House aides describing the angry Dec. 18 meeting where a handful of Trump's outside advisers, including his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, attorney Sidney Powell and Patrick Byrne, former chief executive of Overstock.com, encouraged him to fight the election result.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

So Trump earlier wanted to "find" Republican votes where there were no votes and in the late night screaming session in the White House he was encouraged to "find" foreign interference where there was none?

That's how it was going?

But no, Trump wanted to "find" non existent evidence that it was the Dems, not foreigners, who cheated him out of winning?

Was this actually happening in the real world?

In Trump's world?

New testimony from former White House counsel Pat Cipollone prompted the Jan. 6 committee to delay a hearing that had been informally planned for this Thursday by a week, a member of the panel told Axios.

Driving the news: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) told Axios, "I know that we’ve just changed Thursday’s meeting to next Thursday. ... I think we were shooting for [this Thursday,] but now we have an infusion of new testimony."

Raskin specified: “I think that Cipollone’s testimony has opened up a number of different avenues.”

Why it matters: The development underscores the gravity of Cipollone's eight-hour closed-door deposition, the value of which committee members have been playing up in recent days.

Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) said on "Meet The Press" that the panel "got a lot of relevant information from him."Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said at the panel's Tuesday hearing that it "met our expectations."

What they're saying: “The Select Committee is receiving new and potentially important information,” a committee aide told Axios. The aide confirmed the new testimony was the reason for the delay.

"The Select Committee expects to convene for an additional hearing next week to account for this. We will assess all emerging information for presentation to the American people."

200 Congressional Staffers Demand Climate Action
July 12, 2022 at 10:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

“In a rare move, more than 200 congressional staffers have sent a letter to Democratic leadership in the House and Senate, demanding they close the deal on a climate and clean energy package and warning that failure could doom younger generations,” CNN reports.

Perhaps the most eye-popping piece of new evidence revealed at Tuesday’s Jan. 6 committee hearing was texts between former top Trump campaign aides Brad Parscale and Katrina Pierson. As the dust was settling on the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on the evening of Jan. 6, Parscale found his conscience bearing down on him.

Trump’s former campaign manager called the situation “a sitting president calling for civil war” and added, “This week I feel guilty for helping him win.” He noted someone had died. When Pierson tried to talk him out of the idea that Trump’s rhetoric was responsible, Parscale responded, “Katrina.” And then: “Yes it was.”

By this point, Parscale had been fired months earlier by Trump. But it’s nevertheless one of the starkest instances of a Trump loyalist drawing a direct link between Trump’s actions and what transpired that day. (Text messages from Jan. 6 have shown that Trump supporters understood, in real time, that he was the catalyst for that day’s events and pleaded with the White House to get him to stop his supporters, but the Republican Party as a whole has renounced the idea that Trump actually incited the riot.) Here was a guy who helped elevate Trump to the presidency reckoning with what he had wrought — and blaming Trump directly for pursuing no less than civil war.

The media can't stop fawning over Liz Cheney and her ilk

By Jack Hellner

The mainstream media loves having Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney on television every week, as long as they are trashing Trump.

They have been doing it for awhile.

Notice that these Trump-hating so-called Republicans never criticize any of Joe Biden's disastrous and unpopular policies, or the Biden family corruption.

That's because RINOs and the media don't care about the intentional destruction of America.

Kinzinger is mixed up, it is Biden's poll numbers that are headed towards zero, not Trump's.

Can anyone imagine how few people would show up at a Biden rally where he would read whatever is put on his teleprompter and still get mixed up?

Yet Kinzinger is still spewing tripe like this:

Kinzinger Says in 10 Years There Won’t Be a Single Trump Supporter

Cheney is no better.

The only people Cheney can get to donate to her re-election campaign, currently on the rock, are RINOs and Democrats.

Liz Cheney's latest fans: Democratic donors | The Seattle Times

If she would ever win the primary, which she won't, the media and other Democrats are as likely to support her in a general election as they would be to support Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, John McCain, her dad, and Mitt Romney.

Larry Hogan: ‘Not Sure’ America Can Handle Trump Being Prosecuted

The reason America wouldn't like Trump prosecuted is because there is no crime to challenging an election. If there were, a lot of Democrats would be in jail.

The Justice Department should spend its time prosecuting criminals like the Biden family.

They won't, of course, and on that, Kinzinger and Cheney are silent.

'Should disturb everyone': Fox News analyst stunned by 'breathtaking' Jan. 6 hearing

David Edwards

July 12, 2022

Fox News legal analyst Jonathan Turley reacted with surprise on Tuesday at what he said was a "breathtaking" hearing about the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Turley said that he was most shocked by revelations that Trump officials nearly came to blows during a heated Oval Office meeting about overturning the election.

"It's still damaging," Turley said of former White House counsel Pat Cipollone's deposition. "That meeting in the [Oval Office] is really breathtaking. It's very disturbing."

"At one point, there was a suggestion that there might be fisticuffs," he gasped. "It's almost like this is Dr. Strangelove and the president is saying there is no fighting in the war room. It was just a bizarre moment."

Turley added: "You're in the Oval Office and people seem to be actually chest pounding. So this is very disturbing. All of these details should disturb everyone."

Trump Set January 6 in Motion
July 13, 2022 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

“The Jan. 6 select committee’s Tuesday hearing, ostensibly focused on extremism, drove clearly toward a subtle goal: Stripping away doubt that Donald Trump was anything but a full participant in a plot to subvert the 2020 election,” Politico reports.

“The former president wasn’t duped into disbelieving his own loss by fringe lawyers and advisers, select committee members argued. Rather, he assembled that squad of enablers, overrode his more sober-minded staff and forged the path that led to the chaos engulfing the Capitol, they contended during their nearly three-hour seventh hearing.”

Susan Glasser: A president asking for civil war.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

A recent article at Snopes quotes Claire Finkelstein, founder of the Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, responding to such considerations:

We are facing the potential dissolution of our democratic norms, and the fabric that holds our democracy together, in a manner that is as grave as anything we've faced since the Civil War. ...
I appreciate that the U.S. may be on the brink of mass violence, and I think that that has been a long time in coming. But … there are worse things than violence. We faced violence during the actual Civil War to eliminate slavery in the country. And that was a fight worth fighting. And it was the right thing to do.

Whatever one's conclusion about the relative risks and rewards of prosecuting Donald Trump and his confederates, these concerns about right-wing political violence and terrorism are not unwarranted. Inspired by the events of Jan. 6 — and by how close the coup came to succeeding — Trump and some of his acolytes have all but announced their plans for more terrorism and other acts of political violence.

Why is Merrick Garland so reluctant to act? Charging a former president with a crime is unprecedented — and could spark more political violence. Neither of those is an acceptable reason.

Jan. 6 Committee Admits It Isn’t Even Trying To Verify ‘Bombshell’ Claims

‘We never call in witnesses to corroborate other witnesses or to give their reaction to other witnesses,’ committee member Rep. Lofgren said.

Two weeks after the Jan. 6 Committee introduced a new series of blockbuster claims from surprise witness Cassidy Hutchinson, most of which have failed close scrutiny, panel members are expecting the press to take her testimony at face value.

California Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a 2019 House impeachment manager who now serves on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s latest anti-Trump probe in the Select Committee, went on CNN Sunday to conduct damage control as the Democrats’ desperate narrative ahead of the November midterms fell apart.

Lofgren was asked about the panel’s questioning of former Trump White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, who spoke with the committee in April but was asked back after explosive allegations from Hutchinson were left uncorroborated. Hutchinson told lawmakers in public testimony that Cipollone pressured the low-level White House aide to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to keep the president from going to the Capitol on Jan. 6 or “we’re going to get charged with every crime imaginable.”

“I saw Mr. Cipollone right before I walked out onto West Exec that morning, and Mr. Cipollone said something to the effect of ‘please make sure we don’t go up to the Capitol, Cassidy. Keep in touch with me,'” Hutchinson said.

Multiple sources told The Federalist, however, that Cipollone was not at the White House on the morning of Jan. 6, 2021. Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, who is leading House Republicans’ investigation of the Capitol riot after Pelosi expelled him from his minority appointment as ranking member of the Select Committee, demanded White House visitation records to probe Hutchinson’s claims.

When pressed on whether the panel asked Cipollone to confirm Hutchinson’s testimony, Lofgren said the committee was uninterested, despite the episode serving as a focal point in Hutchinson’s narrative.

“We never call in witnesses to corroborate other witnesses or to give their reaction to other witnesses,” Lofgren admitted on national television to CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Mark Meadows Told Aide Trump Wasn’t Leaving
July 13, 2022 at 9:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

Former Trump communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin told CNN that former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told her Donald Trump would not be leaving office after his 2020 election defeat.

Said Griffin: “I can tell you before I resigned, I said ‘Sir, I’m planning to move on, I want to put in my notice.’ And he said to me, ‘What if I could tell you we’re actually going to be staying?'”

Will Trump one day be leaving for prison?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

On the evening of the 18th, Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and the former CEO of Overstock.com Patrick Byrne were waved into the oval office by a member of Trump loyalist Peter Navarro's staff without anyone knowing about it. A major confrontation ensued between the three of them and lawyers from the White House counsel's office as the outsiders tried to persuade the president to declare a national security emergency under an executive order from 2018 (regarding cyber threats) enabling the president to order the military to seize the voting machines to do an audit. The group wanted the president to name Powell as special counsel to "investigate" voter fraud. They had even already drafted the order giving Powell the assignment and ordering the seizure.

Trump listened carefully to the presentation and repeatedly pointed out to the White House lawyers and others who were vociferously arguing against this inane plot that at least Powell and the others were "out there fighting." Trump patched in Rudy Giuliani on the phone and even he was against Powell's plot believing they had a better chance of overturning the election through the state legislatures and he ended up coming over to the White House and joining in person. Powell thought Trump had agreed with the plan to name her special counsel and no one is quite sure if he actually did. In any case, no national security emergency was declared so that "spoke" was abandoned that night.

Donald Trump was at the center of a number of different plots aimed at accomplishing the same goal.

OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IS THIS CLARIFICATION:

It’s Not Joe Manchin Who’s Trying to Undermine Biden

July 13, 2022 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Jonathan Chait:
“Joe Manchin has absorbed most of the heat from liberals angry that the Senate has often blocked President Biden’s proposals. But Manchin represents an overwhelmingly Republican state, and he has been willing to negotiate a meaningful (albeit smaller) Senate reconciliation package that would move forward key progressive goals.

“The true archvillain of the Biden presidency is Josh Gottheimer, a New Jersey Democrat who keeps sticking the knife in Biden’s back.

“Gottheimer is organizing a small faction of House Democrats to present a ‘counteroffer’ that would blow up the incipient deal with Manchin. The Gottheimer crew wants TO TAKE OUT THE TAX HIKES ON THE WEALTHY that Manchin is proposing. That would mean what’s left of the bill could still contain the spending proposals, BUT IT WOLD LACK THE REVENUE MEASURES that would make it a deficit-reducer, which is MANCHIN’S MAIN RATIONALE FOR SUPPORTING THE BILL in the first place. If that revenue is gone, Manchin’s support probably collapses, and the bill dies. Which is probably FINE WITH GOTTHEIMER, WHO MAY BE EVIL, but isn’t stupid.”
__________

IN OTHER WORDS, GOTTHEIMER IS A SHILL OF THE GOP, A DIMO (DEMOCRAT IN NAME ONLY), WHO WANTS TO KOWTOW TO THE WEALTHY REPUBLICAN RICH WHO SUPPORT A CORRUPT FORM OF RIGHT WING EXTREMISM CONSISTING OF GOVERNMENT OF, BY, AND FOR THE RICH, THE WEALTHY, THE CORPORATIONS -- NOT GOVERNMENT OF, BY, AND FOR THE GREATER MASSES OF THE PEOPLE, THE WORKERS, THE MIDDLE CLASS, AND THE POOR.
