Of course an official declaration of a recession is a moot point. Americans will decide for themselves!

US Consumer Confidence Drops to Lowest Since February 2021 as Inflation Bites
The Conference Board’s index decreased for a third month to 95.7 from a downwardly revised 98.4 reading in June, data Tuesday showed. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a decline to 97.
The steady weakening in sentiment risks causing consumers to cut back on discretionary purchases at a time when the economy is struggling for momentum. Inflation has dented confidence and forced the Federal Reserve to pursue aggressive interest-rate hikes geared at curbing demand.
The American public will ultimately decide what sort of state they feel the economy is in. That will not be up to the Biden administration, the bureau of economic nonsense, or anyone else to decide. Republican will pounce on the two consecutive quarter benchmark and let the Democrats decide if they want to defend this economy to the American electorate and put themselves in a position to be seen as even more out of touch.

Think about it. Consumer sentiment is in the crapper. Most of the country believes we are already in a recession. But the Biden Administration would prefer to have us believe that things are going just swell. That the economy is blasting away and that nobody should be upset with it. You cannot change the mind of someone having issues paying for necessities, knowing that we are looking at another Fed increase that will likely slow down the economy even more.

How can Democrats step up with a straight face and tell the public that the economy is good. But how can they admit it is bad when they own it 100% completely without question. There are no fingers to point at anyone but themselves.

Trump and Pence back in Washington for rival speeches
By JILL COLVIN
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is returning to Washington on Tuesday for the first time since leaving office, delivering a speech hours after his Vice President Mike Pence, a potential 2024 rival, exhorted Republicans to stop looking backward.

Trump's appearance in the nation's capital — his first trip back since Jan. 20, 2021, when President Joe Biden was sworn into office despite Trump's frantic efforts to remain in power — comes as some who are mulling White House bids have been increasingly willing to challenge him directly. They include Pence, who on Tuesday outlined his “Freedom Agenda " not far from where Trump was to speak before an allied think tank that has been crafting an agenda for a possible second Trump term.

While the former president remains consumed by the election he falsely claims was stolen from him a year and a half ago, Pence again implored the party to look to the future as he mulls his own.

“Some people may choose to focus on the past, but elections are about the future," Pence said in an address to Young America’s Foundation, a student conservative group. “I believe conservatives must focus on the future to win back America. We can’t afford to take our eyes off the road in front of us because what’s at stake is the very survival of our way of life.”

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

No, Donald, we blamed you for repeatedly LYING about the seriousness of Covid, promising it would go away like magic in a few days, and for advocating injecting disinfectant, etc. etc. etc. and for foolishly wanting to pack the churches for an Easter that would have led to a disaster of deaths
--all that and SO much more.

If you are a homeowner this is great news if your not already in selling it 😀

Home-price growth remained strong in May despite rising mortgage rates and steep prices that are pushing some buyers out of the market.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller National Home Price Index, which measures average home prices in major metropolitan areas across the nation, rose 19.7% in the year ended in May, down from a 20.6% annual rate the prior month.

A big increase in interest rates since the start of the year has pushed up many buyers’ expected monthly payments by hundreds of dollars a month. Some home shoppers are now unable to qualify for loans, and others have backed away from the market due to higher costs and economic uncertainty. The average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 5.54% in the week ended July 21, up from 2.78% from a year earlier, according to housing-finance agency Freddie Mac.

So it's not just bad news Scott 😕

It doesn't matter what Biden, the NBER, or anyone else says... now does it? What matters is what the American public believes and they believe the economy sucks and that we are in a recession.

But as even pointed out previously... there has only been once where we had two consecutive quarters of GDP growth that was not declared a recession and that was over 70 years ago.

So for the past 7 decades, every time we have had two quarters of consecutive negative GDP growth, we have been officially in a recession. That is your life time, my life time, and most everyone else's lifetime.

Right now we have negative GDP, incredibly historically high inflation that is eating up disposable income, a crashing housing market, and supply chain issues across the board.

I don't see how "low unemployment" has anything to do with the problems we are seeing or how "low unemployment" somehow makes the rest of the problems any better.

We have fully employed people here in Seattle who live in shelters because they cannot afford the $1500+ for 200-200 SF studio apartments. I don't think they find the economy good because they are working.

I doubt any honest economist would suggest that our economy is good "in spite" of the negative GDP growth. Even when our GDP was still growing slightly at the end of 2021, people still rated the economy low and believed we were heading into a recession or already in one.

You would have to really stretch the logical boundaries of an overall economy by suggesting that low unemployment trumps everything else that it negative about the economy (which frankly is everything else).

“Previously undisclosed emails provide an inside look at the increasingly desperate and often slapdash efforts by advisers to President Donald Trump to reverse his election defeat in the weeks before the Jan. 6 attack, including acknowledgments that a key element of their plan was of dubious legality and lived up to its billing as ‘fake.'” the New York Times reports.

“The dozens of emails among people connected to the Trump campaign, outside advisers and close associates of Mr. Trump show a particular focus on assembling lists of people who would claim — with no basis — to be Electoral College electors on his behalf in battleground states that he had lost.”

Instead of spinning opinion.

Just the news.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy is caught in an awkward, painful place. A confusing one, too.

Growth appears to be sputtering, home sales are tumbling and economists warn of a potential recession ahead. But consumers are still spending, businesses keep posting profits and the economy keeps adding hundreds of thousands of jobs each month.

In the midst of it all, prices have accelerated to four-decade highs, and the Federal Reserve is desperately trying to douse the inflationary flames with higher interest rates. That's making borrowing more expensive for households and businesses.

The Fed hopes to pull off the triple axel of central banking: Slow the economy just enough to curb inflation without causing a recession. Many economists doubt the Fed can manage that feat, a so-called soft landing.

Surging inflation is most often a side effect of a red-hot economy, not the current tepid pace of growth. Today's economic moment conjures dark memories of the 1970s, when scorching inflation co-existed, in a kind of toxic brew, with slow growth. It hatched an ugly new term: stagflation.

The United States isn’t there yet. Though growth appears to be faltering, the job market still looks quite strong. And consumers, whose spending accounts for nearly 70% of economic output, are still spending, though at a slower pace.

So the Fed and economic forecasters are stuck in uncharted territory. They have no experience analyzing the economic damage from a global pandemic. The results so far have been humbling. They failed to anticipate the economy's blazing recovery from the 2020 recession — or the raging inflation it unleashed.

Even after inflation accelerated in spring of last year, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and many other forecasters downplayed the price surge as merely a “transitory” consequence of supply bottlenecks that would fade soon.

It didn’t.

Trump back in Washington, repeating election lies
By JILL COLVIN
WASHINGTON (AP) — In dueling speeches not far from the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump repeated the false election claims that sparked the Jan. 6 insurrection while his former vice president, Mike Pence, implored the Republican Party to stop looking backward.

Potential foes for the 2024 GOP nomination, neither man was ready to announce a campaign, but their speeches underscored divisions in the party between Trump loyalists and Republicans who may still like Trump's ideas but are more than ready to move on.

The former president was clearly not ready to move on.

"It was a catastrophe that election. A disgrace to our country," Trump said, insisting despite all evidence that he had won in 2020. And he continued to tease his plans for the future, telling his cheering crowd, “We may just have to do it again.”

Federal and state election officials from both parties and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evidence the 2020 election was tainted. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by courts, including by judges appointed by Trump.

Pence, in an opposite approach from Trump, said, “Some people may choose to focus on the past, but elections are about the future."

EXCLUSIVE: Republican leader Kevin McCarthy tears into Biden for making it 'EASIER' for migrants to get to the U.S. with I.D. cards during the 'worst border crisis in history' that has seen almost one million cross undetected in a year

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told DailyMail.com that President Joe Biden is make it 'easier' for illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Specifically pointed to the new initiative that would provide migrants with temporary I.D. cards so they can more easily access services and benefits

The program is meant to be mutually beneficial to migrants and the government

Incentivizes migrant check-ins and more communication with law enforcement

Democrats are looking to get congressional approval for the program before the end of September to avoid a roadblock should Republicans win a majority

The Biden administration plans to launch an initiative giving temporary I.D. cards to migrants awaiting decisions on their immigration proceedings so they can more easily access services and government benefits.

Illegal immigrants and asylum-seeking migrants awaiting final decisions on their cases often have difficulty getting housing, healthcare and transportation without identification cards.

In order to relieve some of these obstacles, and serve as a mutual benefit to the government, officials are now considering a pilot program that would provide I.D. cards while incentivizing checks ins and more frequent communication with law enforcement throughout immigration proceedings, two sources familiar with planning told Axios.

The cards would feature a photo and biographic identifiers. It would also include 'cutting-edge security features,' an ICE spokesperson said.

Since the start of Fiscal Year 2021 in October, approximately 900,000 migrants have avoided detection when crossing illegally into the U.S., sources at the Department of Homeland Security told Fox News.

Half-a-million of those so-called 'getaways' happened since October 1, 2022 – and there are still three months left in the fiscal year.

Meanwhile, nearly 1.75 million migrants have had run-ins with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the southern border so far in Fiscal Year 2022 – the most of any previous year at this point.

Justice Dept. investigating Trump’s actions in Jan. 6 criminal probe

People familiar with the probe said investigators are examining the former president’s conversations and have seized phone records of top aides

The Justice Department is investigating President Donald Trump’s actions as part of its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

In addition, Justice Department investigators in April received phone records of key officials and aides in the Trump administration, including his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, according to two people familiar with the matter. That effort is another indicator of how expansive the Jan. 6 probe had become, well before the high-profile, televised House hearings in June and July on the subject.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol built their case over a series of eight public hearings.

The Washington Post and other news organizations have previously written that the Justice Department is examining the conduct of Eastman, Giuliani and others in Trump’s orbit. But the degree of prosecutors’ interest in Trump’s actions has not been previously reported, nor has the review of senior Trump aides’ phone records.

A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Justice Department spokesman and a lawyer for Meadows both declined to comment.

The revelations raise the stakes of an already politically fraught probe involving a former president, still central to his party’s fortunes, who has survived previous investigations and two impeachments. Long before the Jan. 6 investigation, Trump spent years railing against the Justice Department and the FBI; the investigation moving closer to him will probably intensify that antagonism.

Federal criminal investigations are by design opaque, and probes involving political figures are among the most closely held secrets at the Justice Department. Many end without criminal charges. The lack of observable investigative activity involving Trump and his White House for more than a year after the Jan. 6 attack has fueled criticism, particularly from the left, that the Justice Department is not pursuing the case aggressively enough.

In trying to understand how and why Trump partisans and lawyers sought to change the outcome of the election, one person familiar with the probe said, investigators also want to understand, at a minimum, what Trump told his lawyers and senior officials to do. Any investigation surrounding the effort to undo the results of the election must navigate complex issues of First Amendment-protected political activity and when or whether a person’s speech could become part of an alleged conspiracy in support of a coup.

Many elements of the sprawling Jan. 6 criminal investigation have remained under wraps. But in recent weeks the public pace of the work has increased, with a fresh round of subpoenas, search warrants and interviews. Pence’s former chief of staff, Marc Short, and lawyer, Greg Jacob, appeared before the grand jury in downtown Washington in recent days, according to the people familiar with the investigation. Both men declined to comment.

The Justice Department is Asking Witnesses About Trump in Its Jan. 6 Investigation

Federal prosecutors sought information about the former president’s role in the efforts to overturn the election AS THE INQUIRY ACCELERATES.

EVEN AS the Jan. 6 committee has helped establish former President Donald J. Trump’s role in parts of the push to overturn his election loss, the Justice Department has been largely silent about whether it would weigh potential charges against him.

EVEN AS the Jan. 6 committee has helped establish former President Donald J. Trump’s role in parts of the push to overturn his election loss, the Justice Department has been largely silent about whether it would weigh potential charges against him.

BUT
Federal prosecutors have directly asked witnesses in recent days about former President Donald J. Trump’s involvement in efforts to reverse his election loss, a person familiar with the testimony said on Tuesday, suggesting that the Justice Department’s criminal investigation has moved into a more aggressive and politically fraught phase.

Mr. Trump’s personal role in elements of the push to overturn his loss in 2020 to Joseph R. Biden Jr. has long been established, both through his public actions and statements and evidence gathered by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack.

But the Justice Department has been largely silent about how and even whether it would weigh pursuing potential charges against Mr. Trump, and reluctant even to concede that his role was discussed in senior leadership meetings at the department.

Asking questions about Mr. Trump in connection with the electors plot or the attack on the Capitol does not mean the Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into him, a decision that would have immense political and legal ramifications.

The department’s investigation into a central element of the push to keep Mr. Trump in office — the plan to name slates of electors pledged to Mr. Trump in battleground states won by Mr. Biden — now appears to be accelerating as prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington ask witnesses about Mr. Trump and members of his inner circle, including the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, the person familiar with the testimony said.

MAKING A CASE AGAINST TRUMP.
The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack is laying out evidence that could allow prosecutors to indict former President Donald J. Trump, though the path to a criminal trial is uncertain. Here are the main themes that have emerged so far:

AN UNSETTLING NARRATIVE.
During the first hearing, the committee described in vivid detail what it characterized as an attempted coup orchestrated by the former president that culminated in the assault on the Capitol. At the heart of the gripping story were three main players: Mr. Trump, the Proud Boys and a Capitol Police officer.

CREATING ELECTION LIES.
In its second hearing, the panel showed how Mr. Trump ignored aides and advisers as he declared victory prematurely and relentlessly pressed claims of fraud he was told were wrong. “He’s become detached from reality if he really believes this stuff,” William P. Barr, the former attorney general, said of Mr. Trump during a videotaped interview.

PRESSURING PENCE.
Mr. Trump continued pressuring Vice President Mike Pence to go along with a plan to overturn his loss even after he was told it was illegal, according to testimony laid out by the panel during the third hearing. The committee showed how Mr. Trump’s actions led his supporters to storm the Capitol, sending Mr. Pence fleeing for his life.

FAKE ELECTION PLAN.
The committee used its fourth hearing to detail how Mr. Trump was personally involved in a scheme to put forward fake electors. The panel also presented fresh details on how the former president leaned on state officials to invalidate his defeat, opening them up to violent threats when they refused.

STRONG ARMING THE JUSTICE DEPT.
During the fifth hearing, the panel explored Mr. Trump’s wide-ranging and relentless scheme to misuse the Justice Department to keep himself in power. The panel also presented evidence that at least half a dozen Republican members of Congress sought pre-emptive pardons.

THE SURPRISE HEARING.
Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide, delivered explosive testimony during the panel’s sixth session, saying that the president knew the crowd on Jan. 6 was armed, but wanted to loosen security. She also painted Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, as disengaged and unwilling to act as rioters approached the Capitol.

PLANNING A MARCH.
Mr. Trump planned to lead a march to the Capitol on Jan. 6 but wanted it to look spontaneous, the committee revealed during its seventh hearing. Representative Liz Cheney also said that Mr. Trump had reached out to a witness in the panel’s investigation, and that the committee had informed the Justice Department of the approach.

A “COMPLETE DERELICTION” OF DUTY.
In the final public hearing of the summer, the panel accused the former president of dereliction of duty for failing to act to stop the Capitol assault. The committee documented how, over 187 minutes, Mr. Trump had ignored pleas to call off the mob and then refused to say the election was over even a day after the attack.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

In April, before the committee convened its series of public hearings, Justice Department investigators received phone records of key officials and aides in the Trump White House, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

Two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence testified to the federal grand jury in the case last week, and prosecutors have issued subpoenas and search warrants to a growing number of figures tied to Mr. Trump and the campaign to forestall his loss.

A spokesman for Attorney General Merrick B. Garland declined to comment, saying the Justice Department did not provide details of grand jury proceedings. The department’s questioning of witnesses about Mr. Trump and its receipt of the phone records were reported earlier by The Washington Post.

IF A DECISION WERE MADE to open a criminal investigation into Mr. Trump after he announced his intention to run in the 2024 election, as he continues to hint he might do, the department’s leadership would be required to undertake a formal consultation process, then sign a formal approval of the department’s intentions under an internal rule created by former Attorney General William P. Barr and endorsed by Mr. Garland.

BUT IN RECENT DAYS, MR. GARLAND has repeatedly asserted his right to investigate or prosecute anybody, including Mr. Trump, provided that is where the evidence leads.

“The Justice Department has from the beginning been moving urgently to learn everything we can about this period, and to bring to justice everybody who was criminally responsible for interfering with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another, which is the fundamental element of our democracy,” Mr. Garland told NBC News in an interview broadcast on Tuesday, when asked to comment on criticism that his investigation was moving too slowly.

The questions about Mr. Trump focused on, among other topics, the plan he was pushing to derail congressional certification of Mr. Biden’s Electoral College victory on Jan. 6, 2021, the person familiar with the testimony said.

The two Pence aides who testified to the grand jury — Marc Short, who was his chief of staff, and Greg Jacob, who was his counsel — were present at an Oval Office meeting on Jan. 4, 2021, when Mr. Trump sought to pressure Mr. Pence into embracing the plan to cite the competing slates of electors as justification to block or delay the Electoral College certification.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

IM RECENT WEEKS, the Justice Department also seized phones from two key figures, John Eastman, the lawyer who helped develop and promote the plan to upend the Electoral College certification, and Jeffrey Clark, a former Justice Department official who was at the center of the related push to send the slates of electors pledged to Mr. Trump from states Mr. Biden won.

Prosecutors have also issued grand jury subpoenas to figures connected to the so-called fake electors scheme. Those who have received the subpoenas have largely been state lawmakers or Republican officials, many of whom put their names on documents attesting to the fact that they were electors for Mr. Trump from states that were won by Mr. Biden.

The subpoenas, some of which have been obtained by The New York Times, show that prosecutors are interested in collecting information on a group of pro-Trump lawyers who helped to devise and carry out the plan, including Mr. Eastman and Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer.

There are also indications that the tense standoff between the Justice Department and congressional investigators over the transcripts of interviews conducted for the Jan. 6 committee hearings IS EASING. THE HOUSE IS SET TO BEGIN HANDING OVER SOME OF THE TRANSCRIPTS AND INTEND TO INCREASE THE PACE IN THE COMING WEEKS, according to people familiar with the situation.

Members of the committee, led by Representative Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming, have said they are still considering making a criminal referral to the Justice Department in hopes of increasing the pressure on Mr. Garland to prosecute Mr. Trump.

Mr. Garland shrugged off that suggestion.

“I think that’s totally up to the committee,” he said in his NBC interview. “We will have the evidence that the committee has presented, and whatever evidence it gives us, I don’t think that the nature of how they style, the manner in which information is provided, is a particular significance from any legal point of view.”

Justice Dept. investigating Trump’s actions in Jan. 6 criminal probe.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The first centers on seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct a government proceeding, the type of charges already filed against individuals who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and on two leaders of far-right groups, Stewart Rhodes and Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, who did not breach the Capitol but were allegedly involved in planning the day’s events.

The second involves potential fraud associated with the false-electors scheme or with pressure Trump and his allies allegedly put on the Justice Department and others to falsely claim that the election was rigged and votes were fraudulently cast.

He will get charged.

The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions Trump gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. Some of the questions focused directly on the extent of Trump’s involvement in the fake-elector effort led by his outside lawyers, including John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, these people said.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in regards to the criminal investigation into Donald Trump, even if it triggers protest.

“We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding Jan. 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable. That’s what we do. We don’t pay any attention to other issues with respect to that.”

Axios reveals more information.

Department of Justice investigators are asking witnesses questions about former President Trump's conduct and examining his conversations with aides concerning the 2020 election as part of their criminal investigation, the Washington Post first reported.

Why it matters: This would mark a major escalation in the DOJ's investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The reports came hours after Attorney General Merrick Garland declined to rule out prosecuting Trump.

Federal investigators would "pursue justice without fear or favor" over events surrounding the U.S. Capitol riot or attempts "to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another,"
Garland told NBC News on Tuesday.

For the record: There's no evidence that Trump is himself is an investigation target, but "prosecutors are asking questions related to him and his aides," per CBS News, which also reported on the Justice Department investigation.

Driving the news: Prosecutors have questioned witnesses testifying before a grand jury in recent days about conversations with Trump and his close advisers about "fake electors," per WashPost.

"People familiar with the probe said investigators are examining the former president’s conversations and have seized phone records of top aides," WashPost reports. Two witnesses who were senior aides to former Vice President Mike Pence in the Trump administration, Marc Short and lawyer Greg Jacob, were among those questioned, several outlets reported. The focus of the questions on Trump concerned matters including a plan to thwart the congressional certification of President Biden's Electoral College win on Jan. 6, 2021, according to the New York Times.

Trump's lawyer John Eastman may be the key witnesses into this investigation. He could be granted immunity to testify on the actions by the former President.

No former president has ever been criminally charged in US history. But Garland this week suggested he hasn't ruled out indicting Trump for his role in the attack.

"We pursue justice without fear or favor. "We don't pay any attention to other issues with respect to that."

Putin’s new gas squeeze condemns Europe to recession and a hard winter of rationing

Europe’s descent into an economic contraction looks to have been confirmed with Russia squeezing natural gas supplies to the region and heavy industry facing tough rationing in the coming months.

Just days after Europeans breathed a sigh of relief as Russian gas giant Gazprom announced it would resume supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, it then announced Monday that flows would be reduced yet again.

The announcement, with Gazprom saying it would be for maintenance of a turbine along the pipeline, was greeted with incredulity and condemnation in Europe.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the move — which will see flows to Germany fall to 20% of its capacity from an already low level of 40% — was tantamount to a “gas war” with Europe. Germany’s economy minister, Robert Habeck, said the excuse that maintenance was the reason for the supply cut was a “farce.”

It puts Europe in a tricky situation as it contends with rampant inflation, the war in Ukraine and an already troubled supply chain following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Germany, the region’s largest economy and traditional growth driver, has a particular reason to worry. It’s largely reliant on Russian gas and is sliding toward a recession. The government is particularly concerned about how it will keep the lights on over the winter: Habeck said Monday evening that “we have a serious situation. It is time for everyone to understand that,” during an interview with broadcaster ARD.

More gas price relief could be on the way for cash-strapped Americans as the government continues to tap into oil from its stockpile.

On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced it would release even more crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) — and work to replenish that SPR's supply. The White House would do so by establishing a federal guarantee to buy oil from some drillers at preset prices to help restock the SPR.

It seems to be an effort to encourage more domestic drilling during a stretch of a high gas prices. The Energy Department will soon put forward a rule helping them do that.

Per the release from the White House, over 125 million barrels of crude oil have already been sold since the government first began its "unprecedented" releases in March, and the reserve is set to release about 180 million barrels by the fall.

Per the release from the White House, over 125 million barrels of crude oil have already been sold since the government first began its "unprecedented" releases in March, and the reserve is set to release about 180 million barrels by the fall.

ADVERTISING

A report from the Department of Treasury estimates that releasing crude oil from the reserves has brought the prices of gasoline down by about 17 to 42 cents a gallon from where it would be without the federal action.

Gas prices began spiking in late February and early March, as the war in Ukraine prompted Biden to ban oil and gas imports from Russia. He said soaring gas prices were "Putin's price hike."

Without Russian imports, the US was under more pressure to produce more oil, and fast — but the end of the fracking boom meant that wasn't happening, leading to prices going up even more.

In the months that followed, the White House sparred with the oil industry, pressing executives at companies like ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Marathon to ramp up production, while also highlighting outsized profits for the oil and gas industry following the price increases.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The US energy industry meanwhile asked for more support for domestic oil producers, and some in the industry expressed skepticism over ramping up production when Democrats are pushing for a transition away from oil and gas towards renewable energy.

The plan to restock the strategic reserve at set prices is intended to sway producers to ramp up drilling, incentivizing investments that might produce oil in the medium term, and locking in guaranteed demand.

In the meantime, Americans' wallets are getting squeezed by soaring gas prices. In June, inflation reached a 41-year-high; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics's Consumer Price Index, skyrocketing gas prices fueled nearly half of the increase in inflation.

Yet gas prices have been declining for over a month, the product of a drop in demand. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the price of a gallon hit $4.33 for the week ending July 25. The current average gas price calculated by AAA is $4.327 a gallon, down from $4.90 a month ago.

"Gas prices have declined by an average of 69 cents per gallon over the past 42 days. That's six straight weeks of declines – and the fastest decline in over a decade!" White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote on Twitter.

FRANK WORDS FROM JONATHAN CHAIT ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICAN JOURNALISM AND EXTREMIST CONSERVATIVE MEDIA BIAS:

The BUBBLE EFFECT in the CONSERVATIVE MEDIA

July 27, 2022 at 9:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 0 Comments

Jonathan Chait:
“Whether the news media treats the Republican Party more or less harshly than the Democratic Party is a question that can’t be measured, and which most people settle by resorting to anecdotes.
Partisans cling to examples of the media treating their side unfairly, with especially noxious examples hauled out of storage to be gazed at repeatedly, like cherished family heirlooms.

“For the purposes of my argument here, I’d like to bracket it. The only point I need to make is that the mainstream media does routinely report critically on the Democratic Party. If you are watching CNN or reading the New York Times, you have encountered a steady stream of articles questioning whether Joe Biden is too old for the job, noting high inflation, pummeling the Afghanistan withdrawal, and so on. Whether you believe this level of criticism is excessive or insufficient is a matter of perspective, but the clear fact is that IT EXISTS.

“NOTHING LIKE THIS EXISTS WITHIN THE CONSERVATIVE MEDIA. The communications apparatus of the conservative movement was established with the goal of ADVANCING HE RIGHT'S POLITICAL INTGERESTS. Its organs often borrow superficial conventions, like bylines and the inverted-pyramid structure, to create the simulacrum of a traditional news medium.
But the people working in these institutions understand they are working for the conservative movement, not on behalf of the public’s right to know. Their approach to malfeasance by their side is to ignore, distort, or change the subject to some agreed-upon sin by the enemy (a practice called ‘whataboutism’).”

But the Justice Department is investigating criminal actions by the former President and his advisors.

U.S. Justice Department probing
Trump's efforts to overturn election

(Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Donald Trump's actions in its criminal probe of the former president's attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing sources.

The Justice Department has been interviewing former White House officials, including the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, who confirmed on Monday that he had testified to a federal grand jury investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn his defeat.

Prosecutors questioning witnesses before the grand jury have asked about conversations with Trump and his lawyers and others close to him, the Post reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.

The testimony of Pence's former Pence chief of staff, Marc Short, the most high-profile official known to have appeared before the grand jury, is a sign the Justice Department's investigation of the attack on the Capitol and the fake elector plot is heating up.

Justice Department investigators in April also received phone records of important officials such as Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows, the Washington Post said.

The Justice Department could not be immediately reached for comment.

A spokeswoman for Trump did not reply to a request for comment from Reuters. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

In an interview with CNN earlier this year, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco confirmed the Justice Department had received referrals about slates of alternative fake electors that were sent to the National Archives, and said prosecutors were reviewing them.

The fake elector plot has featured prominently in multiple hearings of the Democratic-led U.S. House of Representatives committee probing the attack on the Capitol.

Donald Trump is at the center of a lengthy Justice Deparment investigation

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top adviser to then-President Donald Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows, has recently cooperated with the Department of Justice investigation into the events of Jan. 6, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department reached out to her following her testimony a month ago before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, the sources said.

The extent of her cooperation was not immediately clear.

Hutchinson becomes the latest known figure with knowledge of the actions of top Trump administration officials on Jan. 6 to cooperate with the Justice Department's inquiry.

A lawyer for Hutchinson did not respond to ABC News' request for comment. Officials with the DOJ also declined to comment, as did a spokesperson for the Jan. 6 committee.

Hutchinson publicly testified before the Jan. 6 committee earlier this month, spending some two hours recounting details about what she said went on behind the scenes at the White House leading up to, during, and after the Jan. 6 attack.

Her account included descriptions of events she both witnessed directly and other events she said were described to her.
