Climate Change is a hoax thing right now?

As a heatwave drags across the United States, local and state governments are scrambling to find solutions to the threats brought by record high temperatures. Washington DC and Philadelphia have declared heat emergencies, activating public cooling centers and other safety measures across their cities, while Phoenix and Los Angeles continue to push programs to plant new trees in working-class neighborhoods with little canopy coverage. Many of these short-term solutions rely on water, a dangerous reality given that nearly 50% of the country is experiencing some form of drought, with the amount of Americans affected by drought increasing 26.8% since last month. This looming threat has pushed one state, Nevada, to seek a more long-term solution: the banning of non-functional lawns.

Drought has a way of revealing things. Receding waters can highlight the precarity of the crucial systems that keep societies functioning and expose hidden ancient cities.

In the case of Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir, diminishing waters have in recent months uncovered long buried secrets and other mysterious finds: at least three sets of human remains, including a body inside a barrel that could be linked to a mob killing, and a sunken boat dating back to the second world war.

A grueling drought in the American west has depleted the lake, a crucial water source for 25 million people, drying out tributaries, threatening hydropower production and closing boat ramps at the popular recreation site. It is now at its lowest level since the lake was being filled in 1937.

Russian Man Recruited U.S. Groups from Florida, Georgia and California to ‘Sow Discord’ and Push Anti-U.S. ‘Agitprop’: DOJ

FBI raid the Uhuru House in St. Petersburg, Fla., as captured in this local broadcast.

A Russian man spent nearly a decade recruiting U.S. citizens and groups in Florida, Georgia and California to “sow discord” and push political “agitprop” against the United States and favoring the Kremlin, U.S. authorities said on Friday.

According to his 25-page indictment, Moscow resident Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov founded the Kremlin-funded Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia and worked under the “supervision” and with the “support” of Russian intelligence agents as far back as October 2013.

Together, prosecutors say, they recruited political groups within the United States and Ukraine, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Ireland to attend conferences in Russia. Ionov is charged with conspiring to have U.S. citizens act as illegal agents of the Russian government.

“Brazen Influence Campaign”

The scope of the influence campaigns described in the indictment are startling in their aims and diversity, allegedly targeting U.S. elections, boosting a California secession movement, and recruiting groups on both poles of the political spectrum. Court papers also link Ionov to convicted Russian agent Maria Butina, whose ties to prominent Republicans came to light during investigations into the Kremlin’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“As court documents show, Ionov allegedly orchestrated a brazen influence campaign, turning U.S. political groups and U.S. citizens into instruments of the Russian government,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division said in a statement.

Ionov allegedly worked behind the scenes to circulate a Change.org petition to charge the United States with genocide against African peoples, a campaign that gathered more than 113,000 signatures by press time.

Posted by the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based group International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement — a pan-African and socialist group — the petition allegedly began with an overture from Ionov to two unindicted co-conspirators.

On Aug. 13, 2015, Ionov emailed the alleged co-conspirators, who have not yet been identified, asking them to create the petition “ASAP” and sent it to the “UN office in New York and to the websites of the White House and change.org.”

Some 13 days later, prosecutors say, the petition came into being. Ionov allegedly sent an email to one of his unindicted co-conspirators shortly after stating that the petition had been translated into Russian and disseminate through that country’s outlets.

Tampa Bay-based CBS affiliate WTSP captured federal authorities raiding the Uhuru House, quoting defiant words of Akile Anai, the director of the African People’s Socialist Party’s Department of Agitation and Propaganda.

“What we know this to really be, one, is a propaganda war is being waged against Russia every single day throughout the news,” Anai told the station.

“There You Go”

Prosecutors also saw Ionov’s machinations behind the California secession movement, which went viral that year under the hashtag #Calexit.

In April 2017, CNN reported that the movement’s leader ditched the campaign to make his home in Russia shortly after former President Donald Trump’s election.

Ionov allegedly kept pushing the effort into the following year, emailing another unindicted co-conspirator in Russian to plan a demonstration outside the California Capitol in Sacramento that was ultimately held on Valentine’s Day of 2018.

A faith-based organization has amassed more than 12,000 signatures rejecting Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's embrace of Christian nationalism, calling the idea "unchristian and unpatriotic."

Faithful America, an online Christian community that works towards promoting progressive ideas and social justice, launched an online petition on Thursday condemning Greene's perspective of faith and politics.

"Christian nationalism is unchristian and unpatriotic," the petition, which had reached 12,00 signatures as of Sunday, says. "It is defined not as a religion but as a political ideology that unconstitutionally and unbiblically merges Christian and American identities, declaring that democracy does not matter because only conservative Christians are true Americans."

Then and now, Trump posited that only fraud could derail him. After he beat Clinton in the electoral college, he claimed he actually won the popular vote too. In Trump’s mind, he was the victim of ballots cast by illegal aliens.

“In addition to winning the electoral college in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” Trump tweeted.

To those within earshot, he said people who didn’t “look like they should be allowed to vote”, did.

To soothe his ego, he appointed a commission headed by Kris Kobach, a nativist Kansas secretary of state, to vindicate his claims. It found nothing.

In a blend of fiction and wish-fulfillment, Sean Spicer, Trump’s first White House press secretary, and Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser, embarked on flights of fantasy. Spicer declared that Trump’s inaugural crowd was larger than that for Barack Obama. Conway introduced us to alternative facts.

Lemire’s indictment goes way beyond that offered by Clinton, who called Trump voters deplorable. He casts the issue as systemic – and punches up. He is angered but does not condescend. The Big Lie is also about elite conservative lawyers, Ivy League-educated senators, Republican House leadership and Mike Lindell, the My Pillow guy.

Latest Forecasts For The 2022 Midterm Elections

2022 ELECTION

The Political Environment Might Be Improving For Democrats

By Nate Silver

JUL. 29, 2022, AT 8:10 AM

As was the case when we launched the forecast a month ago, the Deluxe version of FiveThirtyEight’s midterm model still rates the battle for control of the Senate as a “toss-up.” But within that category there’s been modest, but consistent movement toward Democrats. Their chances of winning the Senate now stand at 55 percent. That’s up from 47 percent from forecast launch on June 30. It’s also up from 40 percent in a retroactive forecast dated back to June 1.

Our retroactive forecast is based on information that would have been available at the time.

"

This is matched by Democrats’ improved position on the generic congressional ballot, which asks voters which party they would support in a congressional election. Democrats are now essentially tied with Republicans in our generic ballot polling average, after having trailed by 2 to 3 percentage points over most of the late spring and early summer.

In the Classic version of our forecast — which doesn’t use the race ratings published by the Cook Political Report and other expert groups — the movement toward Democrats has also been steady. There, their chances sit at 67 percent, up from 56 percent at launch on June 30 and 52 percent in the June 1 retroactive forecast. (We discussed some of the differences between our Classic and Deluxe versions of the forecast on this week’s podcast, and it’s a theme we’ll revisit in the coming weeks.

It’s always hard to know how much to emphasize relatively modest movement in the forecast. Sure, the difference between a 47 percent chance and a 55 percent chance might matter to a poker player (raises hand) or an options trader. But in practical terms, the story is the same, which is that the battle for Senate control is highly competitive and neither party has a clear advantage.

In this case, though, I think the shift is worth discussing. One reason, as I’ve discussed previously, is that our model is designed to be pretty conservative — at least at this relatively early stage of the race.

It may not feel early if you’re a political junkie, but for many voters, it is — consider that more than a dozen states still haven’t held their primaries.

"It takes a fair amount of data to get the model to change its opinion in July, more so than in October. So although the shift may be modest, it probably isn’t just statistical noise.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The other reason is that there are plenty of news developments to help explain the shift; the political climate would appear to be getting better for Democrats.

The most important of these is probably the Supreme Court’s June decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Democrats have made a fairly clear improvement in the polls since then. And although abortion may not be as important to voters as the economy, it did rank as the second-most-important issue in this week’s Suffolk/USA Today poll.

That’s not the only factor working in Democrats’ favor, though. Consider:

Congress has been surprisingly productive, with bipartisan bills on gun safety and funding semiconductor manufacturing passing, a possible breakthrough on a Democratic spending and climate bill and movement toward bills to codify same-sex marriage and to reform how presidential elections are certified. It’s not clear how much the Jan. 6 hearings have

Trump 'Demonstrably Guilty' of Crime on Jan. 6: Laurence Tribe

U.S. DONALD TRUMP JANUARY 6 JUSTICE DEPARTMENT MERRICK GARLAND
Laurence Tribe, professor emeritus of constitutional law at Harvard University, said Saturday that he believes Donald Trump is "demonstrably guilty" of committing a crime on January 6, 2021, listing several possible charges the former president could face from the Justice Department.

Although it was long known that the Justice Department was criminally investigating the events of January 6 and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, The Washington Post first reported on Tuesday that Trump's actions were being looked into as part of that probe. Meanwhile, the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot has held eight publicly televised hearings laying out what many analysts view as damning evidence and testimony against the ex-president.

Tribe, who has previously predicted Trump will face indictment, gave an assessment of the information that has become public during an interview with Australia's National Public Radio on Saturday. The legal expert said Trump appears to have "corruptly" interfered to obstruct an official proceeding on January 6.

If Trump is ultimately charged with the crime of obstructing an official proceeding, he could face a fine and up to five years in prison if convicted.

Tribe floated the possibility that the former president could also be indicted for seditious conspiracy, saying there was "very strong evidence" of guilt. The constitutional law expert also suggested Trump could face charges of defrauding the country as well as aiding and abetting a violent insurrection.

actual dialog and debate

That would require the "ability" to provide dialogue and understand how to debate. But many people here feel that debate means providing someone else's opinion or take on something as if it is meaningful.

It isn't.

The biggest problem with providing someone else's opinion is that that person (providing the opinion) is not here to question, answer questions, offer clarity, or pretty much anything having to do with dialogue and debate.

There a a lot of "logical fallacies" (improper arguments) and the most abused fallacy on this blog is the "appeal to authority". This is where someone decides that something MUST be true or correct because some "expert" is providing that opinion.

Which becomes even more of a problem with differing people with equal qualifications provide opposite opinions.

But pretty much 75% of all "cut and paste" comments here are a form of the "appeal to authority" fallacy where because Roger or Reverend believe that a particular source is "infallible" that somehow everyone else believes the same thing.

But at the end of the day...

Has Roger put together a personal argument that made any sense? Does the Reverend "EVER" seem to have the ability to answer a straight forward question? Seems like the answer to both is "nope".

which is why they will continue to just C&P everything into oblivion.

I've gotten a half dozen emails in the past year or so from people who have either stopped coming entirely or only do the check in every so often to read the posts but completely ignore the comment threads.

If you’re trying to make a claim about a subject in which you’re not an expert, having someone back you up who has a demonstrated level of knowledge or understanding on the subject may help solidify your claim. However, because experts are human and humans make mistakes, one’s authority status ultimately doesn’t have an impact on the actual truth of a claim, which makes this type of argument faulty. In terms of logic, even experts can be wrong, which means their opinions can really only suggest that something is probably true, and can’t prove it’s definitely accurate. So, in addition to relying on the credibility of an authority, you must also present evidence to prove a point.

If the Justice Department does come with charges, Trump’s current team has acknowledged they would have to bring on more legal firepower to handle the historic legal defense. “You’d need to have a real heavyweight at the top [of the legal team] for something like that, but right now nobody knows who that would be,” one Trump adviser says.
