Trump’s possible ties to far right militias examined by January 6 committee
Capitol attack panel expected to study links between Trump and the extremist groups in closer detail at seventh public hearing

Towards the end of her testimony to the House January 6 select committee, former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson raised for the first time the prospect that Donald Trump might have had a line of communication to the leaders of the extremist groups that stormed the Capitol.

The potential connection from the former US president to the extremist right-wing groups came through her account of Trump’s order to his White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to call Roger Stone and Mike Flynn – which Meadows did – the evening before the Capitol attack.

Trump’s order to Meadows, even though Hutchinson said she did not know what was discussed, is significant because it shows the former president seeking to have a channel to two figures with close ties to the leaders of the far-right Proud Boys and Oath Keepers groups.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The sworn testimony from Hutchinson about Trump’s order to Meadows raised the spectre that Trump wanted to learn what plans had been drawn up for the extremist groups regarding January 6 and wanted his aide - rather than doing it himself - to connect with Stone and Flynn.

Now next Tuesday, at its seventh public hearing led by congressman Jamie Raskin, the select committee is expected to examine the connections between Trump and the extremist groups in closer detail, according to a source familiar with the investigation. There seems to be a lot to go after.

The account of Trump’s order was not the only link from the White House to the extremist groups. Hutchinson also testified that she recalled hearing the terms “Oath Keepers” and “Proud Boys” whenever former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani was around at the White House.

The Trump “war room” that Hutchinson referred to in her testimony appears to have been the one set up by Giuliani and Eastman, and staffed by other pro-Trump figures including lawyer Boris Epshteyn, Trump’s former strategist Steve Bannon, and Giuliani’s aide Bernie Kerik.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

That “war room” had specific goals: to help pressure then vice-president Mike Pence to refuse to certify Biden’s election win and send it to the House of Representatives in a contingent election, or failing that, delay the joint session beyond 6 January 2021.

While Stone also had a mid-size suite at the Willard hotel on 5 January and 6 January, it was a different room that was totally separate to the “war room” put together by Giuliani and Eastman. Flynn was also briefly at the Willard, but again, did not lead the “war room”.

By the evening before the Capitol attack, Trump knew that Pence was resisting that plan to unilaterally reject Biden’s election win and that Pence was unlikely to do anything to stop the certification – what Trump thought was the only way left to somehow get a second term.

It was against that backdrop, Hutchinson testified, that Trump wanted Meadows to call Stone and Flynn, a directive that the panel believes could amount to him trying to figure out if any other avenues remained to stop Biden’s certification, say sources close to the inquiry.

The select committee, the sources said, is for the same reason also examining whether Meadows initially expressed an interest in going to the Trump “war room” at the Willard the night before the Capitol attack before being talked out of the idea by Hutchinson.

It his testimony confirms prior testimony.

Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone will testify Friday morning after receiving a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, according to people familiar with the matter.

It’s unclear what limits there may be on his closed-door testimony, which is scheduled for about half a day, according to one person familiar with the matter. The session will be videotaped, but there will be some limits on what he will testify to regarding direct conversations with former president Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON — Would the new gun law passed by Congress have prevented the mass shooting at a July Fourth parade in Illinois this week? Probably not.

Experts and congressional aides familiar with the law say it’s unlikely it would have stopped a person with the suspect’s profile from passing a background check and being able to buy firearms. But they say there is an indirect way the law could have kept guns away from him — had a number of dominoes fallen into place.

Biden turns to direct attacks on Trump as midterm elections near
Jordan Fabian and Justin Sink, Bloomberg News on Jul 6, 2022
Published in Political News

President Joe Biden accused former President Donald Trump of “dismissing and ignoring the forgotten people he promised to help” in a unusually blunt attack on Wednesday, indicating hat the White House may be trying to turn the midterm elections into a referendum on his predecessor.

Biden, at an event in Cleveland, slammed Trump repeatedly during his remarks unveiling new regulations governing assistance intended to bolster multi-employer pension plans. He said the former president kept Republican lawmakers from voting for the legislation that funded the program.

Trump, Biden told assembled union workers, “didn’t have a commitment to you.”

The president has largely avoided addressing his predecessor by name, and in previous speeches had obliquely attacked Republican congressional candidates as “ultra MAGA” — a reference to Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan — without mentioning him directly.

But on Wednesday, Biden repeatedly called Trump out by name, even joking as a mobile phone rang that the former president was calling to complain. The president also criticized Republican senators, saying South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham had a plan to cut Social Security, while Florida’s Rick Scott had proposed a “shameful” plan that would require Congress to reauthorize programs like Medicare and Social Security every five years.

The White House estimated that with the funding secured in the pandemic bill, some 200 multi-employer plans affecting between 2 and 3 million workers would no longer risk insolvency or dramatic benefit cuts.

The more explicit attacks on Trump come as Biden has seen his approval rating slump to below 40% nationally according to the FiveThirtyEight polls analysis, amid concerns about inflation and the overall state of the economy.

In recent days, the White House has faced questions about the president’s more muted reaction to the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade and the July 4 mass shooting at a parade in the Chicago suburbs, compared to Democratic governors like Illinois’ Jay Pritzker and California’s Gavin Newsom.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre defended the president’s reaction to both events earlier Wednesday, pointing out that Biden had recently secured the first bipartisan gun control legislation in decades.

“The president has been very loud and very focused on those two issues,” Jean-Pierre said.

Abortion Ruling Is Energizing Democrats
July 7, 2022 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 0 Comments

William Saletan:
“The Court issued its ruling on the morning of June 24. In a CBS News/YouGov survey taken on June 24 and 25, 50 percent of Democrats said the Court’s decision to overturn Roe made them more likely to vote in the midterms. Among Republicans, the number was only 20 percent. A Marist/NPR/PBS poll found almost the same gap: by 24 percentage points, Democrats were more likely than Republicans to say that Court’s ruling increased their inclination to vote.

“Many Republicans were already eager to vote based on other issues, chiefly inflation. So perhaps their enthusiasm didn’t have much room to grow. Still, they could have indicated that the abortion ruling would add to their motivation. They didn’t. And that makes sense, because voters tend to be mobilized by anger, not satisfaction. The simplest explanation for the partisan gap in polls is that Dobbs has alarmed pro-choice voters, not pro-life voters.”

THANK YOU SUPREME COURT, FOR GIVING THE DEMOCRATS WHAT TRUMP HAS ALWAYS SO EFFECTIVELY USED:

AN ENEMY.
SOMETHING TO GET MAD ABOUT.

Democrats Running in GOP-Leaning Ohio Snub Biden, Again

When President Joe Biden visited Ohio on Wednesday, the top Democrats seeking statewide office in November both had other places to be.

Democratic Senate hopeful Tim Ryan and gubernatorial aspirant Nan Whaley’s decisions to steer clear of the president in a state Biden lost by more than 8 percentage points in 2020 exposes a gap between how the White House views Biden’s political clout and the view for candidates on the ground.

“There are no accidents when it comes to campaigns,” said Nathan Gonzales, editor of the non-partisan analysis publication Inside Elections. “The bottom line is that if President Biden was politically more popular that you would see more candidates wanting to appear with him.”

It wasn’t a first for Biden, who has visited Ohio six times as president. Ryan and Whaley also were absent in May, when he toured a manufacturing facility in suburban Cincinnati and demanded Congress pass legislation to make the US more competitive with China.

Democrats Race to Clinch Deal with Manchin
July 7, 2022 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 23 Comments

“Democratic leaders are racing to finalize a revised proposal to tackle climate change and jump-start the nation’s transition to clean energy, part of a larger sprint to strike a deal with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on their stalled spending bill this month,” the Washington Post reports.

“The frenzied deliberations reflect weeks of private talks between Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Manchin, a centrist who scuttled negotiations over the party’s last attempt at a broader spending package in December. A climate agreement would help the country meet President Biden’s ambitious clean-energy goals, even as Manchin pursues policies that would still promote fossil fuels.

“While top Manchin aides say they are far from a deal, some Democrats are still hoping to finalize a retooled climate proposal as soon as next week, when lawmakers are set to return from recess.”

MANCHIN AND THE REPUBLICANS SHOULD BE ASHAMED. IF THERE WAS EVER A TIME WHEN THE USA AND THE WORLD NEED BETTER CLIMATE POLLUTION REGULATIONS, IT IS NOW, WITH SEAS RISING, GLACIERS MELTING, ICE CAPS MELTING, AND TORNADOES, HURRICANES, DROUGHTS AND WILD FIRES WORSENING IN OUR OWN LAND AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

David Axelrod Calls Time On The Biden Regime
Obama's chief advisor just buried the Biden/Harris 2024 ticket

With Afghanistan lost to the Taliban, Russia firmly in charge of Ukraine, and 76% of Americans upset that our country is in serious decline, the Democrats realized this week that Joe Biden is the least popular president in modern history — that his administration is doomed — and that it’s finally time to cut and run.

It was Barack Obama’s chief advisor David Axelrod who signaled a general retreat on CNN.

Needless to say, the chances that Obama’s chief mouthpiece suffered a momentary lapse of candor on TV and admitted that things in the country are “out of control” and that it looks like Joe Biden is "not in command” is zero.

Zero as in nada. Zip. Zilch.

We know this is true because Axelrod’s interview was not a one-off. He did an interview with the New York Times just last month to announce that Biden was too old to run for a second term in 2024. Axelrod was also very blunt in that earlier interview: “The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue.”

When David Axelrod appears on major liberal news outlets to tell everyone that he won’t support Biden running in 2024, that really means that Barack Obama will not support Joe Biden in 2024.

And if Obama isn’t supporting Biden, then nobody’s supporting Biden.

It’s over.

There’s rich irony in Obama’s chief advisor calling the Biden regime — which is really Obama’s illegitimate third term in office — a complete failure. Do you really think it was Joe Biden who picked Montel Williams’ Indian girlfriend as his running mate? Or Susan Rice as his White House Number #2 after Ron Klain? How many decisions do you think Joe Biden — a guy who needs cue cards to tell him to sit down at meetings — is making about anything?

David Axelrod’s remarks have created a general panic, of course, in the corporate press. After all, those people are the schlock troops of the Democrat Party — and they don’t want to be left behind while all the party poobahs and newspaper editors run for the hills.

Suddenly, Democrat reporters at Democrat media outlets like NBC News were quoting Democrat congressmen attacking Biden: “His numbers are in the toilet. Whatever he’s doing is not working.”

James's Fucking Daddy said...

Suddenly, a protest letter signed by 68 White House reporters was aired to the public on June 30th — calling for an end to restricting press access to Biden at White House press events.

My old pal Steven Nelson was responsible for getting his colleagues to muster some composure at the 11th hour — and at least pretend to be journalists in the midst of the Biden regime’s collapse. Of course, for most of us, this kind of thing is a day late and a dollar short — to say the very least. The vast majority of these pansies were perfectly fine with Biden hiding from them at the White House for the last 18 months.

A similar letter was passed around in April, and it garnered only ten signatures. Why did almost 70 reporters sign up for press freedom now? Why would unpaid Obama/Biden staffers like April Ryan and Peter Baker sign the letter at all?

Notice the timing.

The rest of the world noticed two years ago that Joe Biden was senile and couldn’t handle the press asking him any questions at all.

So when this motley crew pulls together to denounce Biden publicly, you know the show is really over because the janitors have arrived to mop up the mess.

Seriously, when Sam Donaldson gets thawed out of cryogenic freeze to sign a letter like this — you know that Biden is doomed.

Even Biden’s communications director was out the door today to complete a total clear-out of the Jen Psaki-era aides who want nothing to do with the comical implosion of Karine Jean-Pierre. Kate Bedingfield didn’t even have her next job lined up yet — she’s just ran off like the rest of them.

Suddenly, there’s nobody in Biden comms shop — except John Kirby and he only just arrived.

Suddenly, there’s nobody left to play pretend anymore.

Oil from U.S. reserves sent overseas as gasoline prices stay high

HOUSTON, July 5 (Reuters) - More than 5 million barrels of oil that were part of a historic U.S. emergency reserves release to lower domestic fuel prices were exported to Europe and Asia last month, according to data and sources, even as U.S. gasoline and diesel prices hit record highs.

The export of crude and fuel is blunting the impact of the moves by U.S. President Joe Biden to lower record pump prices. Biden on Saturday renewed a call for gasoline suppliers to cut their prices, drawing criticism from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

About 1 million barrels per day is being released from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) through October. The flow is draining the SPR, which last month fell to the lowest since 1986. U.S. crude futures are above $100 per barrel and gasoline and diesel prices above $5 a gallon in one-fifth of the nation. U.S. officials have said oil prices could be higher if the SPR had not been tapped.

"The SPR remains a critical energy security tool to address global crude oil supply disruptions," a Department of Energy spokesperson said, adding that the emergency releases helped ensure stable supply of crude oil.

Trump's 'full-blown coup': What was Mike Flynn's plan? How much did Meadows and Giuliani know? What about Ginni? What happens next?

The House select committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, has collected more than 140,000 documents and interviewed at least 1,000 people. It has held six televised public hearings so far (with another scheduled for July 12) which have been viewed by tens of millions of people in America and around the world.

A veritable legion of reporters, filmmakers, legal scholars, historians and other researchers have also been doggedly pursuing the truth about Jan. 6 and its larger implications. In a very real sense, the Capitol attack was the most documented crime scene in American history.

A great deal of information is already known about Donald Trump and his confederates' coup attempt, and about their escalating campaign to end American democracy. Nonetheless, there remain many unconfirmed rumors, unanswered questions, unexplained details and a variety of secrets not yet forced out into the light.

During the committee's hearing last Tuesday, Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, gave testimony making clear that Trump and his closest advisers anticipated and welcomed the violence on Jan. 6. Trump was told by the Secret Service that his followers were armed with pistols, assault rifles, and other lethal weapons. Trump ordered that they be allowed to gather by the thousands on the Ellipse anyway. It appears highly likely that Trump intended to go the Capitol himself. Following the pattern of coups that have occurred in other countries, after his followers attacked the Capitol and disrupted the certification of the 2020 Election, Donald Trump would have announced himself as "president" for some indefinite time in the future because of a "national emergency" -- one that he and his confederates actually created.

So the question now is not whether Donald Trump and his confederates committed high crimes against American democracy and the rule of law, but whether they will ever be prosecuted by the Department of Justice.

January 6 for Non-Dummies
The January 6 committee is pure political theater intended to crush the MAGA movement once and for all.

During another public hearing on Monday, the January 6 select committee featured a witness so irrelevant that his appearance should prompt even the most ardent defender of Nancy Pelosi’s illegitimate inquisition to question the committee’s real purpose. Former Fox News talking head Chris Stirewalt, fired by the network shortly after the Capitol protest for calling the state of Arizona for Joe Biden early on election night, told his sob story to a presumably slim viewing audience.

The washed-up commentator, however, is the last person with any insight into the events of January 6, 2021. Stirewalt’s performance—similar to the overwrought speechifying by committee members last Thursday—is another headfake designed to turn attention away from the truth about what happened that day and in the months leading up to the brief disturbance that resulted in the deaths of four Trump supporters.

A well-oiled fog machine operated by the Department of Justice, congressional Democrats, NeverTrumpers, and the national news media is once again pumping lie after lie into the body politic in a last-gasp attempt to destroy Trump and the powerful political movement he created.

For nearly 18 months, American Greatness has covered this issue like no other outlet. So, as the committee continues its dog-and-pony show on Capitol Hill this month with an eye toward producing a long list of legislative “fixes,” the Justice Department inexorably moves to criminally charge Donald Trump for his alleged involvement, and the media takes another extended nap on its purported fact-checking duties, American Greatness here provides the definitive list of what people need to know about January 6, 2021, and related hype.

Congress and D.C. city officials, not Donald Trump, were responsible for protecting the Capitol: It is the primary duty of the Capitol Police board—made up of the sergeants-at-arms for the Senate and the House and the architect of the Capitol—to secure the sprawling complex. The federal police force, with a budget of more than half a billion dollars, employs at least 2,000 officers and houses numerous bureaus, including an intelligence unit; the Capitol building should have been well-protected on January 6 during a controversial joint session of Congress with Vice President Michael Pence presiding.

But Paul Irving, Nancy Pelosi’s sergeant-at-arms at the time, and Michael Stenger, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s sergeant-at-arms, repeatedly denied requests by the Capitol police chief for extra help days before the Capitol protest. As the chaos unfolded that afternoon, Irving and Stenger continued to delay numerous pleas to deploy the National Guard. Although more than 1,000 guardsmen were stationed at the D.C. armory on the morning of January 6, they were not summoned to the Capitol complex until well after 5:00 p.m.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also refused to activate a significant number of guardsmen on January 6. Instead, Bowser authorized a few hundred guardsmen for traffic and pedestrian control. D.C. Metro police officers arrived at the Capitol shortly after the joint session convened at 1:00 p.m.

"The January 6 committee is pure political theater intended to crush the MAGA movement once and for all. And like so many attempts before—the Russian collusion hoax, the first impeachment trial, the stolen 2020 election, the second impeachment trial—Democrats and the media are successfully brainwashing millions of their cult-like disciples who allow themselves to be duped time and again by the likes of Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

Facts, as they say, do matter—and the aforementioned list is just a handful of indisputable truths related to January 6, 2021, that the other side doesn’t want the American people to see. So share it widely."

Uncensored Roger said...

I share these thoughts.

Interviews with Democrats across the country earlier this summer showed a deep reservoir of frustration with Mr. Biden.

“The president needs to be more aggressive,” David Walters, the former Oklahoma governor, said. Matt Hughes, a member of the Democratic National Committee in North Carolina, said Mr. Biden needed to offer a “full-throated campaign against Republican extremism.” Radhika Nath, a former Colorado state co-chair for Mr. Sanders’s 2020 campaign, cited a “lack of energy and enthusiasm” from the Biden administration.

“The moment calls for inspirational leadership, not for excuses and reasons why we keep following tired old playbooks,” she said.

But the sentiment appears to have deepened during the past several weeks, as inflation has risen, the court has ruled on abortion and blaring headlines describing mass shootings have become weekly occurrences.

In the face of one crisis after another, Mr. Biden has sought to explain his inability to offer solutions, in part by shifting the blame to other people or institutions.

Senator Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, wrote an article this week decrying what he called a “sickness” in Washington’s politics. He praised Mr. Biden for trying to improve things but lamented his inability to do so.

“President Joe Biden is a genuinely good man,” Mr. Romney said. “But he has yet been unable to break through our national malady of denial, deceit, and distrust.”

If they find a way to show how dangerous the populist conservative philosophy is, instead of being seen as liberals.

The current MAGA Republican extremism philosophy will cancel the 20th century advances.

It is working in Europe.

Dutch police fired shots at tractor-riding farmers who were protesting against plans to cut nitrogen emissions on Tuesday evening in northern Netherlands.

Police said they were responding to a "threatening situation" when the farmers, who were attempting to push past a blockade to get onto a highway in the province of Friesland, started to drive their tractors into officers and their vehicles.

According to the Friesland police, their shots hit a tractor, but no one was injured. Three suspects were arrested. The Rijksrecherche, the Dutch government's internal investigator, said it would look into the events given police had discharged their weapons.

A spokesperson for the Friesland police did not respond to inquiries, but said a statement would be released later Wednesday.

Dutch farmers have this week been protesting government plans that could require farmers to use less fertilizer and reduce their livestock numbers, which could force some farms to shut.

The Dutch government wants to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia, which are produced by livestock, by 2030. Cuts could reach 70 percent in some areas, under the plans.

The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday requested testimony from executives at three major gun manufacturers at a hearing later this month as part of the panel’s investigation into the industry.

Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) sent letters to Daniel Defense CEO Marty Daniel, Smith & Wesson Brands CEO Mark Smith and Sturm, Ruger & Company CEO Christopher Killoy requesting their testimony on July 20 for a hearing examining the role of the firearms industry in gun violence.

“As the chief executive officer of a major firearms manufacturer that sells millions of assault weapons, your testimony is crucial to understand why your company continues to sell and market these weapons to civilians, what steps your company plans to take to protect the public and what additional reforms are needed to prevent further deaths from your products,” Maloney wrote in the letters, which the committee released publicly on Thursday.

The Hill has requested comments from the three companies.

Maloney launched the committee investigation on May 26 following high-profile mass shootings in Buffalo, N.Y., and Uvalde, Texas.

The Uvalde gunman, who killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School, reportedly used a Daniel Defense semi-automatic rifle. Police said the suspect in the Fourth of July mass shooting in Highland Park, Ill., that left seven dead used a Smith & Wesson Brands semi-automatic rifle.

Maloney in May sent letters to the three CEOs and other gun manufacturers requesting information on their sale and marketing of AR-15-style rifles, including profit and marketing information.

In the new round of letters sent Wednesday, first reported by The Washington Post, Maloney told the three executives that the information they provided “heightened the committee’s concern” that the manufacturers were continuing to profit from the sale and marketing of “weapons of war” despite their harm.

It’s a sham’: fears over Trump loyalists’ ‘election integrity’ drive

Roger Stone and Michael Flynn involved in ‘Operation Eagles Wings’, push to train activists in election canvassing and poll-watching

Peter Stone in Washington

Thu 7 Jul 2022 03.00 EDT

Aconservative group called the America Project that boasts Donald Trump loyalists and “big lie” pushers Roger Stone and Michael Flynn as key advisers, has begun a self-styled “election integrity” drive to train activists in election canvassing and poll-watching, sparking fears from voting rights watchdogs about voter intimidation.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Patrick Byrne, the multimillionaire co-founder of the America Project, has said he has donated almost $3m to launch the drive, dubbed “Operation Eagles Wings”, with a focus on eight states including Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania, which Trump lost, plus Texas and Florida, which he won.

TOPSHOT - Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, is sworn in during the sixth hearing by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol, in the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC, on June 28, 2022. The drive was unveiled in late February at a press event where Byrne touted plans to educate “election reform activists” to handle election canvassing, grassroots work and fundraising “to expose shenanigans at the ballot box” in what has echoes of Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was rigged, and could become a sequel to those charges.

Byrne, for instance, has said the operation’s mission is to “make sure that there are no repeats of the errors that happened in the 2020 election”, and stressed the “need to protect the voting process from election meddlers who care only about serving crooked special interest groups that neither respect nor value the rule of law”.

In mid-December 2020, for instance, Flynn suggested on the conservative network Newsmax that Trump could use the military to “rerun the elections” in several key states that Trump falsely claimed were rigged, and a few days later he attended a White House meeting with Trump, Byrne and other allies, where more wild schemes were discussed.

Stone spoke at a pro-Trump rally on 5 January and the next morning was at the Willard hotel, which Trump loyalists had used as a base for plotting ways to overturn the election, accompanied by several Oath Keeper bodyguards, some of whom participated in the Capitol assault and now face criminal charges.

At the rally on 5 January, Stone lavished praise on Trump’s allies who were there protesting, calling it “a historic occasion, because we’re mad as hell and we aren’t going to take it”.

Flynn and Stone received pardons from Trump after they were convicted as part of the Russian 2016 election meddling investigations, including charges of lying to the FBI in Flynn’s case, and obstruction of a congressional committee in Stone’s.

Ukrainian forces are finally seeing the impact of western weapons on the frontlines of the war with Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said.

Experts say while western equipment has been crucial for pushing back Russian forces, the west will need to scale up its supplies, and even mobilise its own defence industries, if it wants to avoid a war of attrition that Ukraine could lose.

Tomorrow morning will be very interesting.

The White House is bracing for Friday’s jobs report, bearing closely watched clues about what's next for the U.S. economy.

Why it matters: Late last year, release of the Consumer Price Index supplanted the employment report as the most anticipated data dump of the month. Now, with the Fed trying to navigate between growth and inflation, the details of the jobs numbers once again are front-burner.

Conventional wisdom — the better the numbers, the better the politics — may not apply when Americans are hammered by high inflation and the effects of the Federal Reserve's efforts to fight it, by higher interest rates and a falling stock market.

What they're saying: “The CPI has gotten all the attention for the past 18 months, but with the U.S. on recession watch, the jobs report is back as the most important data every month,” said Doug Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum.

“The jobs numbers are some of the most immediate, real-time indicators of the economy so are the first place we look for signs of recession,” said Austan Goolsbee, who served as one of former President Obama’s chairs of the Council of Economic Advisers. Some data in the jobs report provide a "better estimate of inflationary pressure than the direct measures of inflation itself," Goolsbee said.

Zoom in: The numbers carry risk in both directions.

If they show a combination of massive job creation and wages rising more rapidly, the Fed likely would lean more into its interest-rate rising campaign — creating higher risk of a recession later in the year or in 2023.On the other hand, if the numbers disappoint in a major way — with net job losses or a meaningful rise in the unemployment rate — it will fuel worries a recession has already begun.

The Goldilocks scenario is the hope of financial markets and the White House: an economy still expanding, with workers able to find jobs readily without further tightening of the labor market to goad the Fed into raising rates too far too fast.

White House economists are paying particularly close attention to labor force participation, hoping for it to surge and thus increase the supply of workers in the economy — which, all else equal, would tend to dampen inflation pressures.

Ukraine 'holding back' Russian advance into Donetsk

Ukraine has so far thwarted an attempted Russian advance into the north of the Donetsk region but the city of Sloviansk and other residential areas are being heavily shelled, Ukrainian officials have said.

Russia has increased its focus on Donetsk, the southern part of which it already controls, after completing its seizure of the neighbouring Luhansk region on Sunday with the capture of Lysychansk.

Moscow says that fully pushing the Ukrainian military out of both regions is central to what it calls its "special military operation" - a now four-month offensive which the West says is an unprovoked war of aggression.

Donetsk and Luhansk make up the Donbas, the industrialised eastern part of Ukraine that has witnessed the biggest battle in Europe for generations and which Russia wants to seize on behalf of Moscow-backed separatists in two self-proclaimed people's republics.

Ukrainian officials said heavy fighting had been taking place as Russian forces tried to push from Luhansk into Donetsk region and towards the city of Sloviansk.

"We are holding back the enemy on the border of Luhansk region and Donetsk region," Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai told Ukrainian television.
