Here is the reality. It would be inconceivable that the powers to be would have allowed a Secretary of State to store archived documents on a bathroom server without charges, but then turn around and charge Trump for apparently slow walking documents that the National Archives are seeking.
In the Clinton case, there were official classified documents illegally stored and some were deleted and never turned over. In the case of Trump, there are only literal paper documents in question. In some cases they are said to be handwritten documents (the nature of which would be unclear) or copies of things that the Archives already have.
At issue would be the fact that anything a President does that is associated with elections, election strategy, fundraising or anything Politically related is protected and not part of the National Archives. Only documents having to do with non-political Presidential work is required to be turned over. This (of course) is a murky line and could even be cause for disagreement. From what legal experts had been explaining, this was part of an ongoing negotiation (where the President was engaging and participating in). Of course the Archives would want everything and the President would be claiming that certain documents were political strategy (rather than Presidential work).
Now the fact that a "judge signed off so he must have committed a crime" is a non sequitur. First this was a Magistrate judge. Not appointed, not confirmed, and with a checkered history of being in the bag for Democrats. While many would argue that this should have been kicked upstairs to a higher level judge, a Magistrate judge is generally a rubber stamp
We also know that the FBI has gone over the top on numerous occasions going after Trump and used known fake information to convince more than one Judge to garner FICA warrants and other warrants against Trump in a variety of investigations. Wire taps, previous warrants from the FBI, warrants from Special Counsel, the seizure of years of Trump's financial records, warrants for his his tax returns, and possibly even a warrant for his baseball card collection for all we know.
In other words, there have been numerous warrants signed. None of those led to charges.
Andrew McCarthy has an article (behind a firewall) on the subject this morning and eludes to the fact that he believes the Archive issue was a pretense and that they actually went in looking for other information. He apparently believes that they are looking to use the "in plain sight" rules to find the missing Jan 6th smoking gun evidence. ]
In this case they would claim that they can take and search through all of his documents searching for anything that is "classified" and then if they run across anything else in the quest for "classified" documents then they can use it under that "plain sight rule". This (of course) would be dubious, certainly challenged in court, and may wind up all the to the USSC level.
Others believe that the FBI is looking for some sort of provocation or reaction from Trump which would allow them to further enhance their search. Possibly thinking he might be caught moving documents or otherwise acting guilty so they could possibly expand their search.
Either way, this is way over the line and the timing is very suspect. If Trump and his legal team were actively cooperating (which by all accounts they were) - then what was the "reasoning" for the raid now? There doesn't appear to be any hurry here (it's been over a year and a half at this point) and it seems too well coordinated with the political January 6th hearings to be a coincidence.
Lastly, this will provide a HUGE level of motivation for Republicans and any Independent looking for a fair justice system. You can tell by the level of angst already that Republicans are engaged, angry, and will be even more motivated to go to the polls three months from now to wrest back control from the corruption that is plaguing our Government right now. I know I am. Even here in Seattle with little chance to make a difference I will not likely vote (where I may otherwise not have).
The only thing the Justice Department and FBI could do that would more motivational than raiding a Presidential residence over a document archive dispute would to move forward with Charges prior to the election. You know, charge Trump for less than what they refused to charge Clinton for. That would turn November into a bloodbath (if not the country as a whole).

In today’s statement, Trump claimed that “such an assault could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries.” If he was referring to the assault he instigated on January 6, 2021, against the United States Capitol, he is partly correct. Had that assault been successful, the United States could indeed have become a broken, Third-World country.
Yesterday's search of his home, however, was done with a warrant and approved by a court. It occurred under the law.
Law and Order.
It's not behind a firewall.
