If this is (as some people believe) more of an issue of political and public concern than a legal one, the more the DOJ pushes back on this ruling, the more guilty they will be seen of a variety of different allegations that are going to be thrown at them.
Unless the DOJ seriously has something to hide here, I see no point in them defying or otherwise appealing this ruling. As many people like to suggest, if you are not guilty of anything, then you have nothing to fear from some transparency and oversight.
More to the point, the Trump team will play this out as further justification that the raid was unfair and that the DOJ should have honored their original request (shortly after the raid) to have special master assigned. While some (like McCarthy) argue that the civil action took too long, the irony is the the fact that the warrant refers to "letters" and "requests" ignored by the Trump team justified the search, while also not providing a legal subpoena themselves for months before the raid.
Either "requests" are something that should be taken seriously or not. You cannot argue that a request is not enough to warrant a special master, when your pretense for the relative search was based on different "requests" being ignored. Why should some "requests" be ignored without consequences, while requests warrant a 30 armed agent late night gestapo style raid?
