BTW...

  • Donald Trump was not responsible for the 2004 death of Humayun Khan.
  • Donald Trump did not lie to his Parents about the cause of Khan's death.
  • Donald Trump wants to prevent the sort of people who killed Khan from entering our Country.

With all due respect, this is a case where the twelve year old death of a soldier being exploited for political purposes by Parents who should really be angry at the people who killed their son... not a 2016 Presidential Candidate.

Or perhaps they should turn their anger on someone who was a Senator, and supported and voted for that war in the first place?

More over, Khan is an immigration attorney, who's associated with a program that allows people to garner permanent residencies if they agree to invest a great deal of money. This program has been under scrutiny for fraud, and been investigated for possible links to terror groups. If the GOP tried to parade someone out as a grieving parent, only to later find that the person in question had ulterior motives for his attacks... the media would have been all over them.

The reality is that Donald Trump's proposal is about the safety of Americans. The other reality is that Khizr Khan is flat wrong about the constitution on this one. Now you can have whatever disagreements you want with Trump's plan to put a temporary ban on refugees from areas where that population may have been infiltrated by Islamic radicals. But it's blatantly dishonest to suggest that the pain suffered by the Khan family has anything to do with Donald Trump.

This is shameless political grandstanding at it's worst, folks.
Nothing more, nothing less. Reeks of desperation.

UPDATE: The front page of the local Star Tribune has a front page story on the Trump attacks on the Khan family. Interestingly, you can read through the entire portion of the article that shows on the front page, and not find a "single" reference to anything Trump specifically said about the Khan family.

Considering Hillary Clinton has basically stated that the families of the victims of Benghazi were lying about what was said at the funeral... and has not garnered the same amount of criticism for such a position.  I am curious as to what "specifically" Donald Trump stated that was equally critical?

Perhaps it's just me... but a conservative Christian White woman who lost her son as a direct result of an attack on an Embassy that Hillary Clinton was ultimately responsible for securing, does simply not tug at the heartstrings of our liberal press... as much as a Muslim family of Middle Eastern decent, who's son died twelve years ago, but wants to blame Donald Trump for their grief.

In a nutshell, this whole thing is crazy.

Donald Trump's response the Mr. Khan was a huge mistake.

I agree - Trump should have left it at respecting the sacrifice and feeling bad for their loss. Even the "they seemed like nice people" was fine. But I have the feeling that even had he said nothing but that, people would have taken issue with the way he said it, or the tie he was wearing, or whatever.

I am not one who believes that because the Khans lost a family member that the have the right to get up in front of millions of Americans and demand that Donald Trump hasn't read the constitution, or that his family has never sacrifice. Those were personal attacks that had no bearing on the loss of their child. Trump had nothing to do with the loss of their child.

Moreover, Khan is wrong about the Constitution. Banning refugees from areas of the world is a perfectly legitimate and perfectly legal policy.

Quite obviously, the Democrats are using the lack of sophistication of their supporters... to make them believe that such a ban is actually unconstitutional. Easy to do when your supporters will swallow whatever it is you give them.

I see this for what it was. They baited Trump, and quite frankly, most people couldn't even tell you what "specifically" Trump said in response that was so offensive. They just repeat the talking points memo that he attacked the family.

What you said about the Khans is all true but no politician can publicly make that argument and win.

We still give a great amount of respect for parents who lost sons and daughters to war.

Having said that however, I believe the Khans are about done with their 15 minutes of fame.

There is a point where you exhaust the good-will of the American People and change from an honored gold-star parent to a pathetic political hack.

See Sheehan, Cindy.

Clinton can. She can simply deny the allegations against her by the families... and the media will report that the families (and not Clinton) are the ones being political.

What you meant to say was that no "Republican" can get a way with defending themselves against these sorts of attacks.

John McCain came out with a blistering statement against Donald Trump on Monday over the Republican nominee’s attacks on the family of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

"In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service,” McCain said in the statement. “I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates.”

“In the end, I am morally bound to speak only to the things that command my allegiance, and to which I have dedicated my life’s work: the Republican party, and more importantly, the United States of America. I will not refrain from doing my utmost by those lights simply because it may benefit others with whom I disagree,” the statement continued.

Khizr and Ghazala Khan gave a moving tribute to their son on the last night of the Democratic National Convention. During his speech Khan slammed Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States and accused Trump of never having read the constitution. The Khan family immigrated to the U.S. from Pakistan.

Trump was put on the defense and has attacked the parents, saying Khan had "no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things."

On September 14, 2012, three days after the murder of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, and Tyrone Woods in Benghazi, Libya, Hillary Clinton appeared at Andrews Air Force Base, where she spoke with family members of those slain. Shortly afterward, Tyrone Woods’s father reported that she told him, “We are going to have the filmmaker arrested who was responsible for the death of your son.” Sean Smith’s mother recently repeated this, saying, “She said it was because of the video.” Glen Doherty’s sister said she chose “in that moment to basically perpetuate what she knew was untrue.”

We know too that Hillary said in the interview that the Family of THIS Terrorist Attack did not "hear her correctly".

Oh really, so now every one but this old stupid woman has bad hearing.

Someone has to take away Trump's Twitter account, and he has to plan everything he says in public, or in interviews. Otherwise, he's going to cost the Republican party control of the White House for at least four years, and the Senate for even longer. And after the 2020 census, if the Democrats regain control of most states, they will gerrymander in reverse that gave the house to the Republican party, after the congressional landslide, and give it to the Democrats for a generation.

His comments drew a scolding by McCain that will be used against him for perhaps the entire campaign. McCain did not withdraw his support, because he is running for re-election in November. But I would guess, in his private thought, he would love to dump a big pile of poop on Trump's campaign. His full comment will follow.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

McCain’s full statement on Trump and Khan below:

The Republican Party I know and love is the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan.

I wear a bracelet bearing the name of a fallen hero, Matthew Stanley, which his mother, Lynn, gave me in 2007, at a town hall meeting in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. His memory and the memory of our great leaders deserve better from me.

In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates.

Make no mistake: I do not valorize our military out of some unfamiliar instinct. I grew up in a military family, and have my own record of service, and have stayed closely engaged with our armed forces throughout my public career. In the American system, the military has value only inasmuch as it protects and defends the liberties of the people.

My father was a career naval officer, as was his father. For hundreds of years, every generation of McCains has served the United States in uniform.

My sons serve today, and I’m proud of them. My youngest served in the war that claimed Captain Khan’s life as well as in Afghanistan. I want them to be proud of me. I want to do the right thing by them and their comrades.

Humayun Khan did exactly that — and he did it for all the right reasons. This accomplished young man was not driven to service as a United States Army officer because he was compelled to by any material need. He was inspired as a young man by his reading of Thomas Jefferson — and he wanted to give back to the country that had taken him and his parents in as immigrants when he was only two years old.

Captain Khan’s death in Iraq, on June 8th, 2004, was a shining example of the valor and bravery inculcated into our military. When a suicide bomber accelerated his vehicle toward a facility with hundreds of American soldiers, Captain Khan ordered his subordinates away from the danger.

Then he ran toward it.

The suicide bomber, striking prematurely, claimed the life of Captain Khan — and Captain Khan, through his selfless action and sacrifice, saved the lives of hundreds of his brothers and sisters.

Scripture tells us that ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’

Captain Humayun Khan of the United States Army showed in his final moments that he was filled and motivated by this love. His name will live forever in American memory, as an example of true American greatness.

In the end, I am morally bound to speak only to the things that command my allegiance, and to which I have dedicated my life’s work: the Republican Party, and more importantly, the United States of America. I will not refrain from doing my utmost by those lights simply because it may benefit others with whom I disagree.

I claim no moral superiority over Donald Trump. I have a long and well-known public and private record for which I will have to answer at the Final Judgment, and I repose my hope in the promise of mercy and the moderation of age. I challenge the nominee to set the example for what our country can and should represent.

Arizona is watching. It is time for Donald Trump to set the example for our country and the future of the Republican Party. While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.

Lastly, I’d like to say to Mr. and Mrs. Khan: thank you for immigrating to America. We’re a better country because of you. And you are certainly right; your son was the best of America, and the memory of his sacrifice will make us a better nation – and he will never be forgotten.

As the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was unfolding, a high-ranking Pentagon official urgently messaged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s top deputies to offer military help, according to an email obtained by Judicial Watch.

The revelation appears to contradict testimony Defense Secretary Leon Panetta gave lawmakers in 2013, when he said there was no time to get forces to the scene in Libya, where four Americans were killed, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

“I just tried you on the phone but you were all in with S [apparent reference to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton],” reads the email, from Panetta’s chief of staff Jeremy Bash. “After consulting with General Dempsey, General Ham and the Joint Staff, we have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak.”

The DNC and Trump's big mouth is starting to mount up against him.

He's also hinting that he may not want to debate Clinton. Sure, some here will support that, but most voters will have another reason to wonder if he's really qualified. Most of these are from just after or right at the end of the DNC.

If the election were held today, Clinton would probably win an Electoral college "landslide". Not Kerry from twelve years ago.

How her speech represented an “early dip into the gutter”?

Roger - many people within the Democratic Party are very upset at the state of the race, and the fact that Clinton has already spent over 200 million dollars and has actually gone "down" in the polls.

They were hoping to get out in front of this, like Obama did with Romney and sort of control the narrative and "define" who Romney was before he had a chance to define himself. Most people believed it worked.

But all of the money spent trying to "define" Donald Trump has not had a similar effect. So far he seems to be competing with Twitter and controlling the news cycle... and doing reasonably well with it.

One of his groups recently started running anti-Hillary ads in the battleground states, and the Clinton camp immediately went to court to try to shut them down (obviously must be effective).

“Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression,” said Brian Duffy, of Louisville, Ky., who was elected July 27 to lead the nation’s oldest and largest major war veterans organization. There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed. Giving one’s life to nation is the greatest sacrifice, followed closely by all Gold Star families, who have a right to make their voices heard.”

As far as "my" opinions on Trump...

I think he's smarter than the media believes he is and there appears to be a method to his madness that nobody can quite figure out. Every time something like this comes up (Like with the Khan family or the alleged treason accusations) - he seems to end up stronger in spite of the media and pundits believing this to be the "last straw" for voters.

I think the problem becomes a little bit of the boy who cried wolf syndrome. When every time the guy turns around, someone is accusing him of bigotry or hate... it becomes impossible for most people to sort out the political rhetoric from that is really happening.

For instance, at the end of the day... The whole Russians should turn over Hillary's emails, made people discuss Hillary's emails in the middle of the DNC. This so called act of treason was a popular talking point, until he basically did little more that defend himself from the attacks of the Khan family. Then the story shifted.

The problem is that when the outrage is compared with the facts (you cannot hack an offline server) and this Kahn guy is actually an immigration attorney who works to bring Middle Eastern business people to America... who's son died twelve years ago in a war Trump had nothing to do with... things start to look "more" like people are hypersensitive and "looking" to create controversy.

Obviously the fact that this particular immigration attorney's child died is not the reason he opposes Trump. Once the emotions start to fall away, that starts to become painfully obvious. He is about a day or two away from just being a political figure who "will" start having his true motive questioned.

So there is a reasonable case to be made all around... but at some point if people can get tired of an FBI investigation over possible national security breaches... they will get bored all that much sooner with an immigration lawyer who wants to criticize Donald Trump without rebuttal because his son died 12 years ago.

Here is another opinion from Nate Silver:

Meanwhile, the Ipsos/Reuters tracking poll last released data on Friday, covering interviews from Monday through Friday — so most of the poll was conducted during the DNC rather than after it. The short version is that their head-to-head poll (without third-party candidates) shows a bounce back to Clinton, while their version with third-party candidates (the version FiveThirtyEight uses) does not. But Ipsos’s data is a bit of a mess right now because they changed their methodology to remove “neither” as an option in their head-to-head poll. Although the wording on the third-party poll was not changed, it was indirectly impacted by the shift.3 We’re continuing to include the poll in our model, but it’s probably not worth a lot of mental energy to unpack the various editions of it.

Anonymous said...

“They not only changed their formula, to put Hillary ahead. They went back and changed the results, for a week of results where Trump was ahead, and then they turned those into Hillary leads,” said Caddell. “They also erased all the former polling off the site. They didn’t tweak their procedure – they cooked it.”

“Never in my life have I seen a news organization, and a supposedly reputable poll, do something so dishonest,” Caddell continued. “What they have done is, they decided the people who said, ‘oh, I’m never for someone’ – oh, those must be Hillary votes. They used to be Trump voters.”

“They made a switch, as much as nine points, in their results from the beginning of last week, the 25th and 26th. It is, beyond doubt, the most outrageous thing,” he declared, noting that results in three- and four-way polls that include independent candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein were also skewed.

“This is what the media is willing to do, to try to elect her,” Caddell said. “This poll is nothing but a part of a media offensive. In the 45 years since I was a child, in top-level presidential campaigns, I have never seen the media on such a jihad, and so involved in hiding facts, and not following up. This is a crisis of democracy, what the press is now doing.”

Well, the usual suspects came by and started to insult instead of discussing things without anger.

A new poll shows a post-convention bump for Hillary Clinton, who now leads Donald Trump by 3 points in the presidential election.

Clinton, the Democratic nominee, has 43 percent support in the Morning Consult poll released Sunday morning, compared to 40 percent for Trump, the GOP standard-bearer.
One week ago, the billionaire led the former secretary of State 44 percent to 40 percent.

Pollsters noted that almost 1 in 5 voters, or 17 percent, are still undecided, however.

Clinton saw increased support from independent voters and men in the new survey, conducted after last week's Democratic National Convention. She also has overwhelming support from young voters.

That's a seven point swing.

Not bad.
