What’s behind the spate of recent Bay Area restaurant closures?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Thursday that he canceled a meeting with President Donald Trump that had been scheduled to take place on Jan. 31 in Washington.

Peña Nieto had faced intense pressure from legislators to take a firmer stand against Trump by passing on the meeting, after Trump signed an executive order Wednesday moving forward on the construction of a wall along the Mexican border ― while continuing to insist that Mexico will somehow pay the multibillion-dollar cost.

Mexico isn't going to pay for the wall. Another Trump lie.

Final job approval rating of 59% among the highest for presidents.

Did you ever stop to consider there reason he had such a high approval was that people were glad to see him go?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Decades-low unemployment across the Bay Area — 4 percent in the East Bay and 3.5 percent in the South Bay — means that restaurant workers can enter other industries or move to other restaurants. Bednarz said candidates often have not showed up for job interviews.

And the high cost of living here is driving many workers in restaurants and retail (typically lower-wage positions) to other cities and states.

It's far more complicated than you.

Poor corrupt Enrique. Like it or not, YOUR felons and gangs are coming home.

YOU deal with them.

Mexico is nothing without the US.

They'll pay.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Most of the demonstration were organized by local activists. There we three in South Dakota. Rapid City, Pierre and Vermilion.

More spontaneous demonstrations are occurring almost every day.

The Republicans have been resisting the renewal of torture.

They don't have a clue on how they are going to replace Obama Care.

Mexico told Trump to kiss it's ass.

He's clinging to his rigged election bull shit. Ryan, McCain and several others said that there is no evidence. Besides the numbers just are completely impossible. Five million voted illegally, all for Clinton. That would be a scandal of epic proportions.

The meeting with the unions was great. But the Republican party swore to essentially destroying the unions, even the skilled construction trades.

That's the only plus so far. You probably hate unions.

SoCal home prices at highest level since 2007
The median sale price of a home in Southern California was up 7 percent in December over a year earlier, the highest level since the summer of 2007, just before the recession, CoreLogic reported. In Los Angeles County, the median price was $520,000, down a bit from November but 4 percent higher than a year ago. Blame tight supplies, strong demand and a stronger economy.

Note that average approval ratings remain fairly consistent by era. The pre-Watergate presidents are near the top (except Truman), the post-Watergate but pre-Iraq presidents are generally in the middle, and the post-Iraq presidents are near the top.

Indy - I think it's fair to say that Presidential approvals have been more effected by partisanship in recent times. The Presidents with the largest Party Gaps in the history of Gallup polling were:

Obama - 83-13 70
Bush 43 - 84-23 61
Clinton - 82-26 56
Reagan - 83-31 52
Nixon - 75-34 41
Eisenhower - 88-49 39
Bush 41 - 82-44 38

sorry captain gaslight. the number has not dropped but simply stabilized:

The number of immigrants unlawfully in the U.S. has been steady at 11 million since the end of the Great Recession, while the undocumented Mexican population continues to shrink, according to a study released Tuesday.

The multiyear trend marks a reversal of the migratory tide that for decades provided workers for key sectors of the U.S. economy. It’s a turning point that is affecting employers in agriculture and construction, which are reporting labor shortages as those businesses added jobs amid the economy’s recovery.

The Pew Research Center, which analyzed census data, concluded that the leveling off of the illegal population since 2009 is a direct consequence of the decline in the number of Mexicans who are undocumented. The trend was offset only by a rise in undocumented immigrants from Central America, Asia and Africa.

Some immigrants from distant countries fly to the U.S., enter legally and overstay their visas.

Illegal immigration, a central issue in the presidential campaign, peaked at 12.2 million in 2007. It was 11.1 million in 2014, roughly the same as 11.3 million in 2009, according to the report.

[...]

“We see a continued drop in the Mexican unauthorized immigrant population,” said Jeff Passel, the center’s senior demographer. “That’s in contrast to the late ’90s and early 2000s, when their number was growing very, very fast,” at the rate of several hundred thousand each year.

Meanwhile, the number of undocumented immigrants from other parts of the world has grown by 325,000 since 2009, to 5.3 million in 2014. For example, illegal immigration from India reached 500,000 in 2014, up 130,000 in five years.

The Border Patrol reports an increase in the number of illegal entries by what it calls OTMs—people from places other than Mexico. Central Americans constitute the largest group among them. Poverty and violence in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala continue to drive people north.

YOU'RE FIRED!!!

Tillerson was actually inside the State Department’s headquarters in Foggy Bottom on Wednesday, taking meetings and getting the lay of the land. I reported Wednesday morning that the Trump team was narrowing its search for his No. 2 and three officials, and that it was looking to replace the State Department’s long-serving undersecretary for management, Patrick Kennedy. Kennedy, who has been in that job for nine years, was actively involved in the transition and was angling to keep that job under Tillerson, three State Department officials told me.

Then suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, Kennedy and three of his top officials resigned unexpectedly, four State Department officials confirmed. Assistant Secretary of State for Administration Joyce Anne Barr, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Bond and Ambassador Gentry O. Smith, director of the Office of Foreign Missions, followed him out the door.

President Barack Obama had the worst record before the Supreme Court in modern history, losing half of the cases argued before the High Court in his two terms, according to a new study.

While liberals point to legalizing same-sex marriage and the upholding of Obamacare subsidies as cementing the former president’s legacy, the study reveals Obama had a much weaker record with the Supreme Court than previous presidents.

The academic study written by Washington University professor Lee Epstein and University of Chicago law professor Eric Posner found Obama had the “worst record of any President” since Franklin D. Roosevelt. In fact, his presidential performance before the Supreme Court “may be the worst since the Zachary Taylor administration” in the 19th century.

“To assess presidential performance in the U.S. Supreme Court, we created a dataset of cases of concern to the president,” Epstein and Posner wrote. “The dataset covers Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt through Barack Obama (1932-2015 terms), which amounts to 84 Court terms and 13 presidents.”

The results were presidents “prevailed in nearly two-thirds of their cases; and captured over 60 [percent] of all votes cast.”

However, Obama’s success rate is “significantly lower” at just 50.5 percent, the lowest Epstein and Posner found.

RCP shows approval and disapproval numbers for the current occupant that are interesting. Approval numbers vary wildly, from a low of 34% to a high of 59%, but the disapproval numbers are tightly clustered, all of them between 39% and 45%. Clearly, some pollsters are more willing to accept "undecided" or "neither" than others. But those that disapprove, don't need to be coaxed from a noncommittal stance.

I have a question for the geniuses here.

If we impose a 20% tax on imports from Mexico, who will be paying for the wall, as Trump said? I can't wait to see your responses.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

In the last six days, it's obvious that there is a big and growing gap, between the Republicans in the Senate and house, and the corporate interests.

1: The infrastructure projects, because they are not paid for.
2: The use of torture.
3: The vote fraud investigation. This really bugs them, is it distributes attention to many vital issues. Outside the White House, the rest want it to go away.
4: The ACA. There is no consensus among the President and the congress. There are major differences. The congress knows that if they just repeal, they will lose both houses if they don't have a replacement.
5: Foreign policy is perhaps the most important issue. Our allies are nervous about the President. Putting America first, sounds like isolationism.

There are many more. It's going to be very difficult and for me, entertainment.

C.H. Truth said...

Sounds like they are worried because Trump wont bend over and grab his ankles, like our previous commander in chief did...

Are you one of those people who want to let go of the 2016 Presidential election and move on? Doubtful.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Oh I know he's the President. As to isolationim, is much more than you described it.

When are you going to accepted the fact, that President Obama was quite successful and despite the fact that he wasn't perfect, no one was, he will go down in history as one of the game changers, and rescued the economy, the US auto industry, got Bin Laden, and had a fairly successful suppression of ISIS from attacking the homeland. The drones took out most of the leaders.

But your new hero, odds are, he will be a one term failure. The things I listed are just the beginning. His narcissistic personality, will make his job difficult. The need to be number one, is restricted by the Constitution. He's not showing that he's capable of working with the Senate and House. Ryan and McConnell have both been unable to go along with everything he wants. His powers are limited, and he is already frustrated, because he's not the CEO, of the country.
Buy the way, the answer to my question is the American consumers, on goods like, let's say tequila. The price will go up on every single item imported. The same eventually on goods from China, as it looks like protection will get started there too.

It's going to be fun.

January 26, 2017 - Trump Starts In The Hole As U.S. Voters Disapprove, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Reagan, Obama Are Best Presidents In 70 Years Quinnipiac University Polling Logo
PDF format
Additional Trend Information
Sample and Methodology detail

President Donald Trump begins his term with a negative 36 - 44 percent job approval rating from American voters, including a negative 33 - 50 percent rating from women, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Another 19 percent are undecided.

President Barack Obama scored a positive 59 - 25 percent approval rating in his first post- inaugural poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University on March 4, 2009.

There are party, gender, age and racial gaps in President Trump's approval rating:
Republicans approve 81 - 3 percent, while Democrats disapprove 77 - 4 percent and independent voters disapprove 45 - 35 percent;
Men approve 41 - 38 percent, as women disapprove 50 - 33 percent;
Voters 18 to 34 years old disapprove 51 - 26 percent and voters 35 to 49 years old disapprove 53 - 30 percent, but voters 50 to 64 years old approve 47 - 33 percent and voters over 65 are divided 41 - 41 percent;
White voters approve by a narrow 43 - 40 percent, while non-white voters disapprove 55 - 20 percent.
Americans are optimistic 53 - 43 percent about the next four years with Trump as president and say 44 - 36 percent that he will help rather than hurt the nation's economy.

President Trump will be a worse president than Barack Obama, 50 percent of American voters say, and 37 percent say he will be a better president.

Trump will be a "great" president, 18 percent of voters say; 25 percent say he will be a "good" president; 16 percent say he will be "not so good" and 36 percent say he will be "bad."

"Stumbling out of the blocks, President Donald Trump is considered a divider not a uniter, flunking on honesty, empathy and level headedness, while his predecessor sees his legacy burnished by better and better numbers every polling cycle," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "But voters are optimistic in general and confident he will help the economy."

American voters give President Trump a negative 39 - 52 percent favorability rating. Vice President Mike Pence gets a split 37 - 36 percent favorability rating.

Looking at Trump's personal qualities, American voters say:
56 - 39 percent that he is not honest;
49 - 46 percent that he has good leadership skills;
53 - 44 percent that he does not care about average Americans;
62 - 33 percent that he is not level-headed;
68 - 29 percent that he is a strong person;
65 - 32 percent that he is intelligent.
Donald Trump will do more to divide the country, rather than unite the nation, voters say 55 - 40 percent. His policies will help their personal financial situation, 31 percent of voters say, while 28 percent say they will hurt and 38 percent say they will make no difference.

2017: For the last two years, the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock stayed set at three minutes before the hour, the closest it had been to midnight since the early 1980s. In its two most recent annual announcements on the Clock, the Science and Security Board warned: “The probability of global catastrophe is very high, and the actions needed to reduce the risks of disaster must be taken very soon.” In 2017, we find the danger to be even greater, the need for action more urgent. It is two and a half minutes to midnight, the Clock is ticking, global danger looms. Wise public officials should act immediately, guiding humanity away from the brink. If they do not, wise citizens must step forward and lead the way. See the full statement from the Science and Security Board on the 2017 time of the Doomsday Clock.

The entire senior level of management officials at the US State Department has resigned – rather than serve under President Donald Trump.

In the latest display of disquiet among civil servants in Washington over the arrival of the new commander-in-chief, the four top senior officials at the equivalent of America's foreign ministry, announced that they were standing down.

Mr Trump's selection for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, was present at the department’s offices in the Foggy Bottom neighbourhood of Washington DC, when the officials quit on Wednesday, The Washington Post reported.

All four of the officials served under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

The State Department officials join a growing number of civil servants who have left since Mr Trump took office last week.

Hylton, along with three men and three other women, kidnapped 62-year-old real-estate broker Thomas Vigliarole and held him for ransom, before eventually killing him. As noted in a 1995 Psychology Today article, when asked about forcibly sodomizing the victim with a three foot steel pole, Hylton replied: “He was a homo anyway.”

Speaking about Hylton, New York City Detective William Spurling told Psychology Today: “I couldn’t believe this girl who was so intelligent and nice-looking could be so unemotional about what she was telling me she and her friends had done. They’d squeezed the victim’s testicles with a pair of pliers, beat him, burned him.”

According to that same article, Hylton delivered a ransom note to a friend of Vigliarole’s asking for more than $400,000, even though the victim was already dead by that point.
