This is ironic

Liberals are reconsidering federalism in the wake of Trump
WITH ALL OF official Washington in the grip of Republicans, and an autocratic — not to say imperial — figure in the White House, many liberals are taking a second look at the 10th Amendment. That’s the one where all power not explicitly granted to the federal government by the US Constitution devolves to the states. “Progressive federalism,” a term that once might have been considered an oxymoron, is coming into vogue as worried Americans look to the states to protect their rights or to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s more despotic policy proposals.
It’s ironic that progressives find themselves looking for decentralized solutions to overweening power in Washington. Federalism, and its coarser cousin “states’ rights,” have long carried a noxious whiff of bigotry because of Southern-state resistance to civil rights and the abolition of slavery. And, since at least the 1960s and President Johnson’s Great Society, liberals have looked to Washington for broad safety-net protections, and to the Supreme Court to confer an ever-widening circle of liberties.

Pretty sure I was just called a "confederate" for suggesting that we are better off living in a country where state's rights can thrive within the constitutional aspects of our Republic. You know, according to some slim-witted individuals... anyone who suggests that there is such a thing as "state's rights" must be in favor of slavery, among other things.

But now that the shoe is on the other foot, we have a possible authoritative Republican President, and we are very possibly looking at a conservative leaning Supreme Court for the foreseeable future, liberals are now looking at centralized control at the top as possibly a bad thing, rather than a good thing. They suddenly understand the importance of allowing liberal states to not have to conform to conservative federal rules. I think it's both ironic and quite frankly a very good long term turn of events.

For those of you who do not exactly understand state's rights you only have to look at one thing in today's world. It's legal to buy, sell, and consume marijuana in Colorado and Washington, and it will soon be legal in other states as well. Yet, it is still a federal crime to buy, sell, and consume marijuana. So if federal law actually trumped state law, then how come the federal government doesn't come into Seattle and Denver and start arresting people?

You can talk about Obamacare as his legacy, although that will be undone. You can talk about the symbolism of his politics, but that will fade, at least in Washington.

But there is a part of his legacy that is just beginning: Trump.

Donald Trump is Obama's true legacy.

Obama prepared the ground for him, watered and fertilized it with his failed and questionable policy, like Obamacare, which, according to Obamacare guru Jonathan Gruber, was built on lies.

And all the shrieking by the talented Meryl Streep and other theatrical personalities of the wounded left won't change this.

Disappointment follows him, too, a sense of things that could have been, but weren't, an understanding of promise unfulfilled.

Yet I don't think that's entirely all his fault. He had a willing partner in the American news media.

What is ironic, is that all those around 55 will now be paying a lot more for healthcare based on the ryan plan. Way to go if you think repealing obama care is a good thing. LOL

Will people over 55 pay higher health premiums for the same coverage? Under the health care law, premiums for older people cannot be more than three times as much as premiums for younger people. But the Ryan plan would let insurers charge older people five times as much. This change, combined with smaller tax credits or deductions that would not compensate for the increased cost, would significantly increase health care costs for many older Americans.

And for low income....less subsidies and more more tax credits, which could be worthless for most poor.

What's interesting Opie... is my healthcare costs have not changed dramatically since I started with my company 16 years ago. Because I am still on an employee plan, and our company stuck with it (in spite of Obamacare) - I still have basically the same insurance.

So let's think about this. About ten to twelve million Americans bought their insurance through the Obamacare exchanges. There are roughly three hundred and twenty million Americans.

How many are like me, and would likely be no more effected by a "repeal" than would be effected by the passing of the law?

Idiot, that means the rate for the young were artificially inflated.

Old rules, in GA were an 8 to 1 bands. If I charged $100 for a 21 year old, I could charge $800 for a 64 yr old. $900 was needed for the this particular risk. I still need the $900 but with narrowing of the bands I had to jack the 21 year $225 and lower the 64 year old to $675.

So the problem isn't I don't know how to read, the problem is you don't know what in the hell you're talking about. As always

In simpleton 2D thinking, Opie's viewpoint makes sense. But if you actually took the time to look at all the moving parts, it likely makes less sense than it does at first glance.

Let's accept as a fact (because it is a fact):
- Rates of insurance on the exchanges have gone up dramatically.

Let's accept the argument (because there is no competing one):
- Rates are going up because they have not insured enough young healthy people and so the cost of each individual plan is higher.

So how to you resolve the issue and bring costs back down?
- You do what you can to lower the cost for young healthy people, so that more of them will buy into the system. This would (by all accounts) lower the rates for everyone.

So what's to stop them? Laws that state that they must charge them at least 33% of the cost of someone who has much more risk. This artificially increases the rates on younger healthier people (while in the end driving up the average costs for everyone, including those who are supposedly protected by the law).

So if you change that to 20% you can reduce rates for younger people. Produce a better ratio between holder sicker people and younger healthier people and thus drive down the "average" cost for everyone.

A little 3D business thinking.

Time doesn't need to be the judge. You can simply compare those insurance companies that were not tied to those laws, versus those insurance companies who are (or were) on the exchanges.

Considering how expensive it is for everyone purchasing insurance on the exchanges (and those are supplemented companies who take government money to keep costs artificially lower) I think we have enough information to draw a conclusion.

BBC claims a second source backs up Trump dossier

BBC correspondent Paul Wood came forward Wednesday to reveal that there are multiple intelligence sources alleging Russia is in possession of potentially embarrassing or compromising material regarding President-elect Donald Trump. Formerly, only a single source was known to have been aware of the alleged material.

"I saw the report, compiled by the former British intelligence officer, back in October," Wood said. "He is not, and this is the crucial thing, the only source for this.” The Wall Street Journal alleges the British source is Christopher Steele, a director of the London-based Orbis Business Intelligence Ltd.

A member of the U.S. intelligence community also told Wood that "at least one East European intelligence service was aware 'that the Russians had kompromat or compromising material on Mr. Trump,'" Raw Story reports. Wood said that he "got a message back" from the U.S. intelligence community member and that there is reportedly "more than one tape, not just video, but audio as well, on more than one date, in more than one place, in both Moscow and St. Petersburg."

Wood did add, however, that "nobody should believe something just because an intelligence agent says it."

BuzzFeed News has been heavily criticized for publishing the unsubstantiated intelligence in full Tuesday night, which alleges collusion between Trump and Russia as well as the existence of a tape that would be embarrassing for Trump were it to be released. CNN carried similar, but less detailed, allegations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday denied the reports and called them "an absolute fiction" and "a total bluff." The ACA aka ObamaCare isn't going away right away. The bottom line is for the most part, it will remain 80% and the other is going to be a mess.

The Republican plan to repeal Obamacare and delay the implementation of the repeal — with a promise to come up with a terrific replacement later — is probably the party’s best way to destroy Obamacare. Unfortunately for Republicans, it’s also the best way to destroy the Republican majority in Congress.

Something big is happening in the Senate right now: The Republican plan, affirmed again today by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is facing dire peril from Republican defections. Republicans need a House majority, 50 Senate votes, and soon-to-be President Trump to pass repeal and delay.

If Republicans lose three Senate votes, that drops them to 49, and repeal and delay cannot pass. At least three Republican senators (in addition to all the Democrats) now oppose repeal and delay. Rand Paul, of all people, has demanded that Congress repeal Obamacare at the same time it passes a plan to replace it. Paul has announced that he spoke with Trump and secured his agreement on this. Trump has not said so himself, confining his comments to date to a vague assurance, “That’s all gonna work out.”

Trump, of course, tends to change his mind frequently and agree with whomever he spoke with last. But other Republicans senators are taking the initiative. Fellow Republican Lamar Alexander says the same thing as Paul: “We have to take each part of it and consider what it would take to create a new and better alternative and then begin to create that alternative and once it’s available to the American people, then we can finally repeal Obamacare.” Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas said on MSNBC, “It would not be the right path for us to repeal Obamacare without laying out a path forward.” And Senator Bob Corker is walking right up to the edge of the same position, asking Trump to tweet out confirmation of what Paul claims he promised. “If it is his view, it would be really good if he would consider tweeting it out very clearly. There’s more and more concerns about not doing it simultaneously,” Corker says.

The Republican-controlled Senate overcame doubts in its own caucus to approve a budget resolution that will start the process of repealing Obamacare.

The Senate early Thursday morning passed a budget resolution, with 51 yays and 48 nays, that calls for legislation to repeal the controversial healthcare law. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., was not present.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., was the only Republican to vote against the resolution. He previously opposed the resolution, saying that it creates a $9.7 trillion hole in the deficit over the next decade.

The vote came after a marathon series of votes on amendments mostly introduced by Democrats seeking to preserve parts of Obamacare. The non-binding resolution now goes to the House, which is expected to take it up on Friday

If we were seeing the incoming President, in another country, this kind of dispute, we would say that the government is in disarray. A quick Google search for concerns from our allies, confirmed that. Especially the NATO allies.

In his press conference, he compared our intelligence infrastructure to Nazi Germany.

He refused to say that the Russians hacked into the DNC.

He attacked CNN and other news sources.

He had paid people who capped at his comments, and booed the media. That has never been done before today.

It was more of a show for his supporters, than a news conference.

Even Shepard Smith on Fox, said that the attacks on the media was inappropriate for a President of the United States.

He claimed credit that Fiat Chrysler and Ford decided to create jobs here. Those decisions are made years in advance. The decision to invest billions are not made in two months.

He said that his two sons were going to be in charge of the Trump enterprises. This is legal, but it's going to be very contentious, when decisions are made, they will be questioned.

This was he first news conference since July of last year.

Almost every single newspaper, news media and our intelligence agencies, were appalled as well was our allies. Even some Republicans were obviously appalled.

He will be our President in ten days. He did nothing that would bring the country together. His thin skin was very apparent. A President has to make, important, often life and death decisions. A President has to get information, and give the orders after serious thought. From what we see in public, it is troubling. I hope that I'm wrong, but like I said, he does not appear to be thoughtful.

What is going on here is blindingly obvious. Intelligence agencies–again, I think this means the CIA, although the NSA could also be involved–are creating “news” in order to discredit the incoming Trump administration. Just as the report on Russian hacking that they delivered last week was 100% politics and 0% security, the attachment to that report that created today’s news stories had no purpose other than to legitimize the spreading of unsourced, and almost certainly false, slanders against the president-elect.

Many people do not realize that the CIA has been a liberal organization, generally associated with the Democratic Party, since its founding. For the agency to intervene in this manner to try to discredit a nascent Republican administration is shocking, but not entirely surprising.

This excerpt from the New York Times’s account tell you all you need to know:

[I]ntelligence agencies considered it so potentially explosive that they decided Obama, Trump and congressional leaders needed to be told about it and informed that the agencies were actively investigating it.

Intelligence officials were concerned that the information would leak before they informed Trump of its existence, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the summary is classified and talking about it would be a felony. [Emphasis added]

Right. So “intelligence officials” think nothing of committing a felony if it will help serve the cause of the Democratic Party. The CIA is a sick agency. Heads need to roll. Let’s hope that President Trump carries out a thorough house-cleaning, including, where appropriate, criminal prosecutions.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, furious about President-elect Donald J. Trump’s appointments of finance industry insiders, took to Facebook a little over a week ago to fire off a message to her nearly 2.5 million followers.

She took aim at an individual she described as a “hedge fund billionaire” who is “thrilled by Donald Trump’s economic team of Wall Street insiders.”

The hedge fund manager she condemned was Whitney Tilson, who runs Kase Capital. Ms. Warren — the fiery Massachusetts Democrat who is known for her stern mistrust of Wall Street — called him out by saying, “Tilson knows that, despite all the stunts and rhetoric, Donald Trump isn’t going to change the economic system.” Then she added, “The next four years are going to be a bonanza for the Whitney Tilsons of the world.”

There’s one rather glaring problem with Ms. Warren’s attack: Mr. Tilson happens to be one of the few financial executives who publicly fought Mr. Trump’s election and supported Hillary Clinton. A lifelong Democrat who was involved in helping to start Teach for America, Mr. Tilson also happened to be one of the rare Wall Street executives who had donated to Ms. Warren and actively sought new regulations for the industry. Recently, he gave Mrs. Clinton $1,000 so he could see Ms. Warren speak at a campaign fund-raiser. (He’s also far, far from a billionaire.)

Of course during the day, I read articles on the news conference.
I also watched some of the talk shows.

I usually shut down the media and in approximately one hour of my time early this morning, and wrote down the post.

I'm confident that every single comment I made is verifiable.

For example, a few minutes ago, I read a quote from a Fiat Chrysler executive, who said that the decision to expand its assembly plants, after negotiations with the United Auto Workers union. Not because of the election of Donald J. Trump.

The use of a documented right wing blog, that is not journalism, but it is a partisan blog. Multiple reports this morning, reported that the leak of the piece Buzzfeed ran, did not come from internal leaks from within the CIA, or any other intelligence agencies.

Trump is endangering the security of the United States, with his comments on the most powerful intelligence services on the planet. Skepticism is a good thing, but to discredit the security experts that he will have to depend on, is irresponsible behavior of the President elect elect. That's not just my opinion. Sources from the Reagan administration through to today, are very worried.

Did it come up? Mr Trump failed to answer when asked directly about contact, but did say there was no truth to any part of the report earlier in the press conference.
Furious Trump denies Russian 'leverage'
Business interests
Q: You are about to assume the highest office in the land. Will you completely divest yourself of your business interests?
The president-elect's wide-ranging business interests are a major source of concern. The US Office of Government Ethics has said only a full divestiture from his business interests can protect Mr Trump's presidency from conflicts, but he has so far refused to meet this demand.
Did it come up? Yes - and Mr Trump confirmed he would be handing total control of his businesses to his two sons and he would have no hand at all in its running.
"Don and Eric [his sons] are going to be running the company," he told reporters. "They are going to be running it in a very professional manner. They're not going to discuss it with me."
The business will also be donating all income made by its hotels from foreign governments to the US Treasury, and said no foreign deals would be made during Mr Trump's term in office.
But significant questions remain about whether he has done enough - the Office of Government Ethics has already said he hasn't.

Q: Do you have confidence in the US intelligence services, and do you think they have confidence in you?
Mr Trump had lashed out at the FBI, CIA and NSA after they said that they had reached a consensus that Russia was behind the hacking of the Democratic party. It was an unprecedented move for a president-elect to question the country's own intelligence services.
Did it come up? Almost. Mr Trump was asked "do you have a problem with the intelligence community", which he did not answer at the time.
Later, he said he thought their work was "vital" but he did say he thought it was "pretty sad" that documents were being leaked by the agencies.

Relations with Russia
Q: You mocked Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton over their attempts at a "reset" of relations with Russia. How does your approach to improving relations differ from theirs?
Mr Trump has repeatedly praised Russian leader Vladimir Putin and said he wishes to improve US-Russia relations, but there is little indication as to how his plans differ from those of the Obama administration in 2009.
Did it come up? Mr Trump did touch on his relationship with Mr Putin, telling reporters "Russia will have a much greater respect" for the US under his administration, adding there was "no reset button".
Earlier, he said: "I don't know that I'm going to get along with Vladimir Putin. I hope I do. But there's a good chance I won't.
"And if I don't, do you honestly believe that Hillary would be tougher on Putin than me? Does anybody in this room really believe that? Give me a break."
Other details remain unclear.

The Wall
Q: How do you plan to make Mexico pay for a border wall?
The Wall was the key rallying cry of the Trump campaign, and his fans delighted in his claim that Mexico would pay for it. But Mexico's president has said emphatically that it won't, and the Trump team has yet to outline a detailed plan for how to raise the funds.
Did it come up? Yes, but there are no clearer details on how it will be funded - although Mr Trump was clear it would be a wall, and not a fence as some have suggested.
It will also be a top priority, if Wednesday's press conference is anything to go by.
"I don't feel like waiting a year or a year-and-a-half. We're going to start building. Mexico in some form, and there are many different forms, will reimburse us and they will reimburse us for the cost of the wall. That will happen, whether it's a tax or whether it's a payment - probably less likely that it's a payment. But it will happen."

The health insurance industry has a motive to insure the largest amount of young and healthy people as they can. This is the way that they keep their own costs balanced. It's why they hire actuaries.

Considering that many health insurance companies (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente, etc) are non-profit and pretty much all health care insurance coops are designed as non-profits, I think it would be "cynical" to think that they would simply bump up premiums because the law permits. What would be their incentive to "overcharge someone".

Again, there is historical empirical data that you can look at (something you seem to believe is relevant) as it pertains to the costs of health insurance. What's "naive" is believe that our hapless government can create a new bureaucracy to overlook an industry and basically supervise and control companies in such a manner that makes the entire concept of insurance actuaries obsolete, as the bureaucracy sets the rules for both coverage and cost.

We disagree because you have too much trust in Government bureaucracy and too little trust in professional insurance actuaries who have balanced this successfully for many insurance companies (especially those who are non-profit). More to the point, you have an unhealthy skepticism of fundamental capitalism, and feel the need to have a "mommy state" to control the big bad mean capitalists.

The last thing I have any like is for govmt bureaucracy, but I can read that you avoid reality with a passion. Disagree all you want, but you will pay more sooner than later. I'm medicare which I expect to see increases on. Fortunately, my old company pays me for medicare supplemental which has very good coverage of rate hikes. CH, most BCBS insurance companies are for-profit, since 2012 I think. When they were non-profit, they horded billions of surplus, many multiples of the amount needed for solvency. So apparently they do care about the revenue stream.

Kaiser Permanente invested $2.6 billion in 2014 - so evidently they have a use for it as well.

What's the argument here? Whether Ryan's plan is going to cost some of us a lot more and line the pockets of someone in the industry? Of course it will! That's what Ryan does, it's reason Ryan exists. The question is who specifically is Ryan planning to screw over, and if you can get out of his way.
