Being pushed, not pulled towards Trump...

I know several Trump supporters and to a person, they are more than happy with how he has performed his job. His 85% plus approval rating with Republicans proves that he is certainly not turning off his base. In terms of following through on what he stated he would do during his campaign, I think he has been pretty consistent with his efforts... even as he has been less than graceful in his means.

I know several Trump haters and to a person, they are unhappy with how he is performing his job. His 85% plus disapproval rating with Democrats proves that he is certainly not converting many (if any) of his biggest detractors. The fact that his actions are consistent with his campaign doesn't seem to dampen the lack of enthusiasm for them. It's almost as if they expected that somehow, he would push a different agenda that he campaigned on, and the fact he has stuck to his guns is akin to him rubbing salt in the wound.

Personally I wasn't a Trump supporter. I didn't vote for him. I don't necessarily agree with all of his policies or all of his actions. I believe he picks fights that are not necessary, I believe that too many of his actions are boorish, and I believe he could do quite a bit more to smooth out the rough edges.

All that being said... I find myself slowly but surely moving into the Donald Trump camp, and realistically I can honestly say that it has very little to do with how he is performing his job.

The reason I am moving into the Donald Trump camp is very specifically because I am completely turned off by how the rabid opposition is behaving. There appears to be almost no rhyme, reason, or logic. Rather we are witnessing a blind raging opposition to pretty much everything Trump.  Quite frankly, it all comes off as unhinged and irrational. I honestly believe that some people I know could benefit from some therapy.

If Trump came up with a cure for cancer tomorrow, I am positive that these people would suddenly find themselves to be pro-cancer and no doubt would file a lawsuit somewhere in the 9th circuit to protect the rights of cancer cells. All in the name of opposing Donald Trump.

I can't help associating the current "resistance" to Donald Trump with the sort of behavior one might find at a professional wresting cage match event. People wildly booing and berating the bad guy, even as they deep down understand that the whole thing is an orchestrated fictional event.

What has become abundantly clear to me is that if Donald Trump doesn't either start another world war or lead us into another great depression, it's going to be very difficult to take the sides of the pussy hat wearing protesters, Anti-free speech burning random stuff rioters, or those who want to put the concerns of Middle Eastern refugees ahead of the concerns of Americans.

Donald Trump won't pull me in, because he doesn't have to. His opposition is pushing me to him by offering me no reasonable alternative. I simply can't associate with the hatred, anger, and irrational thought process of the so called resistance. They've become a worst version of what they claim to oppose.

More to the point... I am pretty sure I am not alone.

This from the "fake news" feels the same way you do. New York Times

It’s with a whiff of desperation that President Trump insists these days that he’s the chief executive Washington needs, the decisive dealmaker who, as he said during the campaign, “alone can fix it.” What America has seen so far is an inept White House led by a celebrity apprentice.

This president did not inherit “a mess” from Barack Obama, as he likes to say, but a nation recovered from recession and with strong alliances abroad. Mr. Trump is well on his way to creating a mess of his own, weakening national security and even risking the delivery of basic government services. Most of the top thousand jobs in the administration remain vacant. Career public servants are clashing with inexperienced “beachhead” teams appointed by the White House to run federal agencies until permanent staff members arrive.

Mr. Trump lost his national security adviser this week in a scandal involving ties to Russian intelligence. Robert Harward, a retired vice admiral, refused the job on Thursday, rattled by a dysfunctional National Security Council and a president who has alienated Mexico, Australia and even the British royal family, while cozying up to Moscow.

When Mr. Trump’s assistants can keep the edge of panic out of their voices, they insist that Mr. Trump has gotten more done in the early going than most presidents. And Mr. Trump is so adept at creating smoke that Americans might be forgiven for thinking that’s true. But at this point in the Obama presidency, which did inherit a mess, Congress had passed laws aimed at dragging the economy back from the brink of depression while committing $800 billion in Recovery Act spending to projects ranging from housing to roads to advanced energy technologies.

CH, that's what is wrong with Trump, not those who disagree with him.

Your comment seems to me, that you on that he's the irrational, impulsive behavior, and childish insults and hatred of those who disagree with him should move you away from him. He's the President and that kind of behavior should push you the other direction. But you could disagree with him, without all of the impulsive anger, that some of those who are rationally upset by his behavior, that we agree on.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

My phrasing was off a bit.

Simply put, you can find a way to remain opposed to him, without all of the impulsive hatred on the angry opposition. A rational, balanced opposition could bring you back to the Coldheartedtruth.

Your comment about the opposition, misses the new generation that is starting to move on. Cory Brooker,sp, Jim Ryan, who lost to Pelosi, but isn't a disaster, and the guy elected yesterday isn't a disaster. And Castro from Texas, is bright, moderate and was able to win in deep red Texas.

You seem to believe that there isn't any difference between a tweet, or an unwelcome boorish opinion. I do see a difference, the impulsive tweet by the President of the United States is far from an "opinion", that you call foolish is not near as important as the tweet made at 3:00 AM by the President.

.. and burning down buildings, if that happened, big IF it is a very rare and not acceptable. But where is the credible source of you claim.

illegally leaking classified information, Deep throat, pentagon papers both told the truth about a President that the public should know about. They will call embarrassing data as a "secret"

filing idiotic lawsuits, publishing completely false news stories, or blatantly avoiding confirming cabinet members. You are buying off on the Trump side, because you don't like the truth. Our media is free for a reason, and your claim that all the negative op eds on Trump as 'false" because you believe a man who was elected on a platform that isn't going to pass, because the American people and the congressional Republicans are feeling more and more as EXPRESSED in the polls that you don't like,

Indy - I made it abundantly clear during the election that I was not voting for Trump. Gary Johnson got my vote by default.

C.H. Truth said...

Roger - there are no "sides" here. There is just an interpretation of events.

Quite obviously you feel personally violated when the President tweets something you believe he shouldn't write. Seems to me that this should provide you with a unique insight for why the President reacts when someone writes something he disagrees with?

By demanding that there is something wrong with the President reacting to media words, and then going ahead and doing the exact same thing by reacting to Trump's words... it seems you should be equally critical of your own behavior?

But for me, the war of the words between Trump, Democrats, Republicans, media, Hollywood... is politics as usual, just uncloaked and more in your face than we generally see. Perhaps even just a little more honest.

It's the actions. The constant talk of impeachment. The paranoia about "Russia". The over the top delay of cabinet appointments. The protests turning into riots. etc... etc...

I remember how you got so upset that a Republican or two suggested that they wanted to make Obama a one term President? I don't see you similarly upset now that the tables are turned and Democrats are not only suggesting he should be a one term President, but many are trying to figure out a way to get him out sooner, and publicly suggesting as much.

Press secretary Sean Spicer is cracking down on leaks coming out of the West Wing, with increased security measures that include random phone checks of White House staffers, overseen by White House attorneys.

The push to snuff out leaks to the press comes after a week in which President Donald Trump strongly criticized the media for using unnamed sources in stories and expressed growing frustration with the unauthorized sharing of information by individuals in his administration.

Last week, after Spicer became aware that information had leaked out of a planning meeting with about a dozen of his communications staffers, he reconvened the group in his office to express his frustration over the number of private conversations and meetings that were showing up in unflattering news stories, according to sources in the room.

Upon entering Spicer’s office for what one person briefed on the gathering described as “an emergency meeting,” staffers were told to dump their phones on a table for a “phone check," to prove they had nothing to hide.

Spicer, who consulted with White House counsel Don McGahn before calling the meeting, was accompanied by White House lawyers in the room, according to multiple sources.

There, he explicitly warned staffers that using texting apps like Confide — an encrypted and screenshot-protected messaging app that automatically deletes texts after they are sent — and Signal, another encrypted messaging system, was a violation of the Presidential Records Act, according to multiple sources in the room.

The phone checks included whatever electronics staffers were carrying when they were summoned to the unexpected follow-up meeting, including government-issued and personal cellphones.

Paranoia on steroids. Personal phones are private property. If they terminate anyone, they will file law suits, and win.

Or for refusing to allow them to be searched. It wouldn't surprise me at all if agreeing to such searches was a requirement for accepting their jobs.

That's a toxic environment to work in. It will hurt the ability of staff to function if they're constantly under suspicion. God help the nation if this is what the next four years are like.

Jorge Ramos' Commencement Address to the School of Journalism Class of 2015
May. 19, 2015 Public Affairs Staff
Updated Dec. 15, 2015 3:26 pm

Anchor for Univision and Fusion Jorge Ramos delivered the School of Journalism's commencement address on May 15, 2015. The following is a transcription of his speech.

It’s great to be here, you’re excited right? Class of 2015! La clase del dos mil quince!

It is great to be here with so much energy and first of all let me just go through the format. I have to thank Dean Ernest J. Wilson and of course the director of the School of Journalism Willow Bay for inviting me this morning to USC.

I am really honored. It’s great to be here in Trojan territory. I’m here to celebrate you and of course to celebrate the new building and media center. I just had a tour. It’s fantastic. It’s the envy! It’s the envy of any school.

We are here to celebrate the incredible diversity of this University. We’re from all over the world, from China to the barrios of Los Angeles. And that is fantastic! We are here to celebrate the collaboration between the Fusion the company I work for and USC Annenberg to train and inspire young journalists. We are here to celebrate the fact that many of you will be the first in your families to graduate. One in seven, I’m told. And I’m sure your parents somewhere here are crying right now. Because we know it’s a family affair — the fact you’re here means the family worked together, it’s prevalent in the Latino families, they work together for you to be here. And now it’s a huge responsibility, so this is a great reason to celebrate.

I guess I was invited here to talk about the future, your future — and this is what I know.

I’m an immigrant and I’m a journalist and those two things define me.

Jorge Ramos, anchor for Univision and Fusion, delivers the commencement address at the School of Journalism ceremony for the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism on May 15, 2015.
USC Annenberg / Brett Van Ort

To be an immigrant means I left everything behind, I left my family, I left my friends my house and I also left the sense that life was going to be predictable. As a young reporter I was censored in Mexico. Back then in the 1980s it was impossible to criticize the President. Just imagine that. Of course I did a report that criticized the President. Before I was fired, I quit. I was going to be fired there was no question about it. I had the opportunity to just say “Well, what should I do?” and I quit. I sold my car, I still remember that, it was an old Volkswagen beetle, a red one. Maybe some of you have that beautiful car. I got a little money, no more than $2,000, and with that I came to Los Angeles as a student. I was only 24. Honestly, I didn’t know anything about the business. But I did know I didn’t want to be a censored journalist.

So I will always be grateful to the United States because this country gave me the opportunities that my country of origin couldn’t give me and I just hope that this country continues to do that with the immigrants who came after me.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

So now let’s fast forward to the present. I have been an anchorman for almost 30 years. That means that before you were born I was already covering the news. But here’s the problem. Many years from now when you tell your kids and your family that an anchorman gave the commencement speech at USC when you were graduating they will ask, “Mom, Dad, what is an anchorman?”

Most likely you will have to put me in the same category as dinosaurs and other species about to be extinct and I’m not kidding.

Remember the rain this morning. Remember the rain because I am sorry to say but you are entering journalism and public relations in the middle of a storm. In our profession we are living in the equivalent of climate change with the fundamentals of our profession melting like icebergs in the middle of summer, flooded by social media and looking outside the window honestly with anxiety and uncertainty. Everything is changing, actually, everything is changing and migrating to your cell phones. Newspapers are not being read on paper anymore and guess what? Obviously I’m in the television business and we are producing shows, programs for people who don’t even own a television set. And now let me just give you a quick fact check. In journalism right now we don’t know exactly how to make a lot of money with the new technologies. So don’t expect a big paycheck or at least not now.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

And the way to do that is ask tough questions. Don't be scared. There are no silly or stupid or forbidden questions. And your attitude should be that if you don't ask that question to the President, to the Senator, to the mayor, no one else is going to do it. So don't look around to see if someone else is going to do it. It is your responsibility. That's precisely why you chose to be a journalist.

An independent Prosecutor is no different from any sort of investigative action. They follow some form of evidence that a crime has been committed and that they can ultimately charge someone with such a crime.

First thing here is that a special prosecutor would have no authority to charge anyone from Russia with a domestic American crime. An investigation into what some foreign government has done would generally come from the C.I.A. and various intelligence outfits... and any said response would be diplomatic.

According to investigations ordered while Obama was President, they blamed the Russians and they put sanctions in place. There would be no place for a special prosecutor to reinvent the wheel, and that person would have no authority to prosecute anyways.

If, on the flip side, your argument is that you should hire a special prosecutor to simply "look around" to see "if" something else illegal was done... that is also not within the scope of a special prosecutor. There is no credible evidence from anywhere that there was any collusion between the Russians and anyone in the previous White House or either campaign. Those who had been intercepting phone calls already have suggested as much. No evidence of any collusion, much less any specific evidence of any credible crime of any sort.

If you cannot call for a Special Prosecutor to investigate Clinton's email server (which by all practical means was dripping with illegal actions)... then certainly we cannot call for one to engage in a wild goose chase for Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster... just because some crazies demand that it exists.

While liberals whine, Trump gets results.

Shulkin proposes eliminating 40-mile, 30-day rule for non-VA care

WASHINGTON – Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin on Sunday proposed eliminating a controversial policy that limits veterans from receiving private-sector health care.

Speaking to hundreds of people at the Disabled American Veterans annual conference in Arlington, Va., Shulkin laid out his top 10 priorities for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It was his first public address since becoming VA secretary.

High on Shulkin’s list was redesigning the Veterans Choice Program into what he called “Choice 2.0.”

His plan would include removing the rule that allows veterans to go outside the VA for health care if they had to wait more than 30 days for an appointment or live more than 40 miles driving distance from a VA facility. Some veterans and lawmakers have criticized the 40-mile, 30-day rule for limiting veterans’ health care choices, and Shulkin called the program “extremely complex and bureaucratic.”

C.H. Truth said...

It's almost as if they want us to turn into a Gestapo State rather than one guided by the constitution and the protections of things like the fourth amendment.

People like Roger seem to forget that in order for law enforcement to investigate anyone specifically you would need a search warrant and subpoena power. Both require at least some evidence of a specific crime and both require a reasonable belief that the party in question has tangible evidence to prove said crime.

The word that is generally used in this situation is "PROBABLE CAUSE". Prosecutors and investigators are required to provide probable cause to a Judge before garnering a search warrant or an arrest warrant and for the most part even a subpoena

In broad political terms, it's easy to suggest a special prosecutor for pretty much anything. In the tangible specific legal world, you need actual specific targets and some evidence that a specific crime has actually taken place.

So who do you suppose Roger would have the investigate and for what specific crime? Is there evidence that someone from the Trump campaign helped hack the DNC and Clinton campaign email servers? Is there evidence that someone fro the Trump campaign helped facilitate providing that hacked information to Wikileaks? IS there evidence that someone from the Trump campaign was possibly directly responsible for any of the leaks?

What exactly would be the "probable cause" to start investigating American citizens?

first of all, i don't think he said "free" press because we haven't had a truly free press in my lifetime. what we have had is a severely biased and dishonest press that has dutifully carried water for democrats and has attacked republicans ruthlessly.

the msm would be wise to adopt a posture of honesty and objectivity. then they might be able to recover some of the public's lost trust, and at some point in the future might be able to begin to extract their reputation from the shitter.

trump's not the reason trust in the media is hovering at 12%.

but the trust in the media hovering at 12% is a big part of the reason why we got trump.

President Trump let slip the secret during his first news conference. Here’s what he told shouting reporters trying to trip him:

“I’ll tell you something, I’ll be honest — because I sort of enjoy this back-and-forth. And I guess I have all my life.”

As do his supporters and a good number of detractors, who’ve turned Trump appearances and his press secretary’s news briefings into TV ratings hits on cspan.org and cable.

Enough Americans have witnessed or perceived media misinterpretations and bias to enjoy seeing its elite members handed back some guff, even crudely. And there’s now a vibrant, imperfect social media on 24-hour online patrol.

Meanwhile, media members who blithely passed along Obama’s serial lies about, among many things, keeping your doctor and health plan under ObamaCare, are now on Alpha Alert for Trump untruths, visibly relishing each one.

The Washington media needs to stop whining, get off their high horse and do the jobs they chose, reporting accurately what a president says now and putting it in true context to what he said last year or last night.

Americans are not dumb, even if you disagree with their presidential choice. In the years B.T. (Before Trump), millions decided the Fourth Estate had become more of a fifth column to combat traditional values and fairness.

That’s dangerous because our democracy needs a healthy, honest press, now also financially troubled. The best way to restore both trust and business health is to reboot and become real journalists again, this time with a professional conscience. Because it takes two sides to keep a war going.

Roger - freedom of speech runs both ways. Something liberals (and the press) seem to want to ignore. Anyone, including the media, is allowed to criticize politicians.

But politicians and other media people are free to call out the media when they are less than honest or less than objective.

They also, quite frankly, are not above the laws of the land. I find it strangely amusing (in terms of the frank hypocrisy) that the media wants to somehow argue that their collusion with intelligence sources (who are breaking the law by leaking classified information) is somehow justified because they are trying to uncover possible collusion with internet hackers (who were breaking the law).

So they feel it's okay for the media to collude with sources who are breaking the law... so they can expose whether or not the exact same thing was done by somebody else?

It's like torturing a captive, in attempts to force that captive to expose others who are torturing people to gather information.

Just how deep do Trump’s ties to the Russian hacking of the 2016 election go? According to Reuters, the FBI wants to know and have launched three separate investigations looking into the scandal. The news organization confirmed the investigations through five current and former government officials with direct knowledge of the situation, shedding light on the scale of the investigation for the first time.

President Donald Trump has claimed numerous times the election was wrought with fraud, yet has insisted it came from the Democrats and illegal immigrant voters.

It seems the FBI does not agree. While their investigations are not centered around the final election results, they are each looking at what role Russia played in hacking the Democratic National Committee and just how much influence the Kremlin had over Trump’s and his campaign.

The White House has been quiet about the investigations, a spokesperson would only point to an earlier quote by Trump during the campaign in which he said, “As far as hacking, I think it was Russia, but I think we also get hacked by other countries and other people.”

While it has been previously reported that the FBI was looking into the hacks, the number of independent investigations and just what they are looking for was previously unknown.

Of the three, the most damaging to Trump’s presidency could come from FBI counterintelligence agents based in Washington. According to Reuters, “This counterintelligence inquiry includes but is not limited to examination of financial transactions by Russian individuals and companies who are believed to have links to Trump associates.”

If agents find direct ties to Trump or his campaign, this could be grounds for impeachment if our Republican-strangled Congress chooses to act. Just how many ties to foreign corporations or governments Trump has are still unknown, as he still refuses to release his tax returns to the public.

Previous reports have indicated that Trump and some of his staff could be victims of Russian blackmail. Hopefully, these investigations can shed some light on just how serious this claim really is.

If the President of the United States was installed or was blackmailed by a hostile foreign government, the American people deserve to know.

Leaked audio from an anti-Trump protest group meeting reveals activists with anti-Trump group Indivisible plotting how to best manufacture a hostile environment at a town hall with Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana on Friday.

The audio, obtained by local radio station KPEL, reveals a coordinated effort to create the public impression that Cassidy’s support for Trump is unpopular with his constituents. The activists, who describe themselves as liberals in the audio, can be heard strategizing how to best turn a local town hall into a political victory.

The activists split up into an “inside team” — tasked with occupying “as many seats as we can” and an “outside team,” whose job was to “give [the media] the coverage they want” before joining the others inside. Activists were instructed to dress like conservatives and leave at home “any signifier that you’re a liberal” in order to blend in with constituents.

Republicans are also fully on board with Trump's frequent accusations that the media is manufacturing "fake news" to undermine his presidency.

Asked if they believe that the news media is "exaggerating the problems with the Trump administration because they are uncomfortable and threatened with the kind of change Trump represents," a whopping 89 percent of Republicans agreed. On that measure, a majority of all Americans - 53 percent - also say the same, although that includes just 21 percent of Democrats.

Thank you Mr President.

Former president George W. Bush rarely weighs in on current political events, but on Monday, he offered some of his most pointed critiques of President Trump's statements and policies in an interview with NBC News' “Today” show.

Asked about Trump's claim that the media is the “enemy of the people,” Bush warned that an independent press is essential to democracy and that denouncing the press at home makes it difficult for the United States to preach democratic values abroad.

“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy,” Bush said. “We need an independent media to hold people like me to account.

“Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive and it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse power, whether it be here or elsewhere,” he added.

Bush noted that during his presidency, he sought to persuade people like Russian President Vladimir Putin to respect a free press.

“It's kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we're not willing to have one ourselves,” Bush said.

On Russia, Bush added that “we all need answers” about whether Trump campaign officials had contact with Russian officials in the election. But he did not endorse the idea that an independent prosecutor was necessary. Bush said that Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr was an “independent thinker” capable of handling the inquiry.

“If he were to recommend a special prosecutor, then it'd have a lot more credibility with me,” Bush said of Burr.

Lauer sought to pin Bush down on his position on Trump's travel ban, which Bush refused to endorse.
Instead, he offered a defense of religious freedom, warning that the terror threat is not a religious war but an ideological one.

“I think it's very important for all of us to recognize one of our great strengths is for people to be able to worship the way they want to or to not worship at all,” Bush said. “A bedrock of our freedom is the right to worship freely.”

“I understood right off the bat that this was an ideological conflict and people who murder the innocent are not religious people — they want to advance an ideology and we have faced those kinds of ideologues in the past,” he added.

Pressed to state clearly whether he supports or opposes the ban, Bush would only say “I am for an immigration policy that's welcoming and upholds the law.”

LAUER: But there’s enormous division right now, and although President Trump has said he hopes to unify the country, have you in the first month seen him do or say anything that, in your opinion, would be an attempt to heal the wounds of the election?

BUSH: Well, first of all, there’s only been one month in office, and so … you know, he’s got four years. Secondly, I think you have to take the man for his word that he wants to unify the country, and we’ll see whether he’s able to do so.

House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes spoke to reporters earlier today and said he had seen no evidence of any contacts between the Trump administration and Russia. He also said he’d been told by people inside the intelligence community “there’s nothing there.”

Nunes opened himself to questions and was asked by CNN’s Manu Raju, “Can you say categorically that there were no contacts whatsoever between any officials affiliated with the Russian government and the Trump campaign?”

“Not that I’m aware of. We still haven’t seen any evidence of anyone from the Trump campaign, or any other campaign for that matter, that’s communicated with the Russian government,” Nunes replied.

Raju then asked why Nunes had agreed to talk to a reporter about the matter at the request of the White House. Nunes replied by turning the question around, “If the White House asked me to talk to you would you think that that would be okay or not okay?” When Raju suggested that the White House was urging Nunes to “knock down these stories” Nunes replied, “No, that absolutely didn’t happen.”

A few minutes later another reporter asked, “So the FBI specifically told you that they have found no contacts between any Trump associates and Russian officials.”

“As of right now I don’t have any evidence of any phone calls. It doesn’t mean they don’t exist but I don’t have that. And what I’ve been told by many folks is that there’s nothing there,” Nunes replied.

A few minutes later Nunes was asked again by CNN’s Jim Sciutto to clarify that he has been told there’s no evidence of any contacts. “The way it sounds like to me is it’s been looked into and there is no evidence of anything there. Obviously we’d like to know if there is,” Nunes said.

Asked if a special prosecutor was appropriate, Nunes said there would be nothing for them to do. “If at some point serious crimes have been committed it would be something that we’d consider but at this point we don’t have that,” Nunes said. He added, “But at this point the only serious crimes we have are leaks that have come out of our government to the press and others.”

ah, the good old days -

The Justice Department spied extensively on Fox News reporter James Rosen in 2010, collecting his telephone records, tracking his movements in and out of the State Department and seizing two days of Rosen’s personal emails, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

In a chilling move sure to rile defenders of civil liberties, an FBI agent also accused Rosen of breaking anti-espionage law with behavior that—as described in the agent's own affidavit—falls well inside the bounds of traditional news reporting. (Disclosure: This reporter counts Rosen among his friends.)

UPDATE: Fox News responds with a blistering statement that asserts Rosen was "simply doing his job" in his role as "a member of what up until now has always been a free press.”

The revelations surfaced with President Barack Obama’s administration already under fire for seizing two months of telephone records of reporters and editors at the Associated Press. Obama last week said he makes “no apologies” for investigations into national security-related leaks. The AP's CEO, Gray Pruitt, said Sunday that the seizure was "unconstitutional."

The Obama administration has prosecuted twice as many leakers as all previous administrations combined.

“The president is a strong defender of the First Amendment and a firm believer in the need for the press to be unfettered in its ability to conduct investigative reporting and facilitate a free flow of information,” White House press secretary Jay Carney insisted last week. “He also, of course, recognizes the need for the Justice Department to investigate alleged criminal activity without undue influence.”

The details of the government's strategy against Rosen sound like something out of a spy novel.

Investigators looking into disclosures of sensitive information about North Korea got Rosen’s telephone records and a warrant for his personal emails but also used his State Department security badge to track his movements in and out of that building, the Post reported, citing court documents.

and so they were -

At least six journalists were charged with felony rioting after they were arrested while covering the violent protests that took place just blocks from President Trump’s inauguration parade in Washington on Friday, according to police reports and court documents.

The journalists were among 230 people detained in the anti-Trump demonstrations, during which protesters smashed the glass of commercial buildings and lit a limousine on fire.

The charges against the journalists — Evan Engel, Alexander Rubinstein, Jack Keller, Matthew Hopard, Shay Horse and Aaron Cantu — have been denounced by organizations dedicated to press freedom. All of those arrested have denied participating in the violence.

smart people stay the fuck away from anarchists smashing windows and setting cars on fire. that's something that could've been reported on from a distance. being in the thick of it just for the sake of the experience is a dumbass move.

and it happened during occupy wall street too:

Journalists were among the scores arrested in New York City as the Occupy Wall Street movement marked its one-year anniversary.

The movement has been holding protests for the past few days to commemorate the date, and police have been very active in responding. More than 100 people were arrested on Monday alone.

As they have been since the protests began, journalists found themselves swept up, though on a smaller scale than at the movement’s 2011 height.

Josh Stearns, campaign director for media reform group Free Press, compiled news about the arrests on Storify. Photojournalists appeared to be the most frequently targeted. Two photographers and one journalist were arrested on Saturday night, and several more during Monday’s protests. At least one journalist from the local WPIX station was arrested on Monday. In one instance, police arrested a photographer, Julia Reinhart, while she was wearing identification that listed her as a member of the National Press Photographers Association. Another journalist and illustrator, Molly Crabapple, tweeted about her arrest on Monday. “Can’t wait to draw this,” she wrote.

John Bolger, a student journalist at Hunter College, was also arrested.

The NPPA issued a statement saying that it was “deeply concerned and troubled by the aggressive and indiscriminate manner in which officers and command staff are allegedly treating those exercising their First Amendment rights.”

Union leaders in California continued a protest even after neighbors and police informed them they were at the wrong house because their target, Rep. Steve Knight (R., Calif.), had moved away months ago.

The group of over 50 protestors, who arrived in Service Employees International Union (SEIU) vans, carried a fake coffin to the house to send a message that Knight's votes in Congress were "killing" them, according to a report in the local Antelope Valley Press.

Police arrived at the scene to alert the union protestors that they were in the wrong place, but the activists—who had already been informed of this fact by neighbors—decided to continue the protest anyway. The police removed the protestors from the home's driveway and front lawn, where they were holding a candlelight vigil.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Donald Trump’s unrelenting assault on the media is in fact an assault on the implacability of truth, the notion of accountability and the power of free speech. It is also a bit of a bow to the conspiracy theorizing that Trump is wont to do.

Last week at CPAC, the politically crippled Reince Priebus delivered a soliloquy lamenting Trump’s negative media coverage, saying, “We’re hoping that the media would catch up eventually.”

Trump’s “boss,” Steve Bannon, immediately blasted the notion the way a shotgun blasts a quail rising from the brush:

“The reason Reince and I are good partners is that we can disagree. It’s not only not going to get better. It’s going to get worse every day.”

Bannon continued:

“And here’s why. By the way, the internal logic makes sense. They’re corporatist, globalist media that are adamantly opposed — adamantly opposed to an economic nationalist agenda like Donald Trump has.”

He later added:

“And as economic conditions get better, as more jobs get better, they’re going to continue to fight. If you think they’re going to give you your country back without a fight, you are sadly mistaken. Every day — every day, it is going to be a fight.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The conspiracy theory Bannon posits here is perfectly shaped for the xenophobe: America’s media has economic interests that extend well beyond this country’s borders, and therefore Trump’s “America first” message and policies pose a very real, bottom-line threat to the media’s global prosperity. The threat is so urgent that the American media is willfully damaging the only real asset it has — credibility — by inventing falsehoods designed to damage Trump and insulate its own profitability.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

As far-fetched as this may sound to any reasonable person, one must always remember that Trump isn’t a reasonable person or even a particularly smart one, which makes him the perfect vessel for Bannon’s pseudo-intellectual vanities.

The day after Bannon spoke, Trump himself came to CPAC and reaffirmed his commitment to this anti-media crusade, parroting Bannon’s language. Bannon is the President without the title. He tells Trump what to think and say. Trump ain't all that bright so he can make him do what he wants, with the alt-right racist beliefs.

First Trump said: “A few days ago I called the fake news the enemy of the people. And they are. They are the enemy of the people.”

He continued in a barely coherent diatribe of sentence fragments, incongruous ideas and broken logic. But if you listened closely, you could hear echoes of Bannon. At one point, Trump said: “We have to fight it, folks, we have to fight it. They’re very smart, they’re very cunning and they’re very dishonest.” At another he said of the media: “Many of these groups are part of the large media corporations that have their own agenda and it’s not your agenda and it’s not the country’s agenda, it’s their own agenda.”

Trump is Bannon’s puppet, whose one sustaining parlor trick is to deliver incoherence with confidence. Strangely enough, people find comfort in this kind of imperfect parlance.

Maundering is the rhetoric of the middlebrow.

Demagogic language is reductionist language. It draws its power from its lack of proximity to soaring oratory. It can be quaint and even clumsy, all of which can give idiocy, incomprehensibility and untruth a false air of authenticity.

So Trump and Bannon spin their folksy tale of media corruption to give Trump a needed enemy in his perpetual campaign and a needed diversion from the enormity of his disasters. This fits Trump perfectly because not only does he have a gnawing insecurity, he also views the confrontational nature of news as maleficently targeted.

President Donald Trump was well on his way this week to cementing a presidential record for the least-approved first 100 days in American history.

A poll released Sunday night by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal indicated Trump was continuing to face the lowest approval ratings for any incoming president in recent years, with the majority of Americans disapproving of Trump's first few weeks on the job. About 48 percent of those surveyed said they viewed the president’s performance unfavorably, compared to 44 percent who approved of Trump’s first 100 days thus far.

The joint survey was conducted from Feb. 18-22 and surveyed 1,000 Americans across the United States. But its results weren't out of the ordinary: Trump’s approval ratings have continued to sink to new lows amid ongoing investigations into his presidential campaign's ties to Russian government operatives, as well as his continued Twitter spats with everyone from Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-V.t, to the national intelligence community's FBI and CIA.
