Classic example of media dishonesty?

So, the left is completely up in arms over the recent Trump announcement that he is withdrawing the Federal guidance regarding transgender bathroom and locker room use in public schools. Apparently this is one of those seven signs of the apocalypse or something. At least you might believe so, as you read through the media headlines:

  • The White House’s thoughtless, cruel and sad rollback of transgender rights
  • As transgender rights get rolled back, America needs more bathroom cops
  • Trump Administration Halts Federal Protection For Transgender Bathroom Rights In Schools
  • Trump administration withdraws federal protections for transgender students

Let's start with this. The previous Obama order that issued the "guidance" on transgender bath and locker room use had actually been halted in court. So the order in question was not even an order at this point in time, and there is little evidence that the President of the United States can actually unilaterally demand this sort of rule changes to schools in general.

Obama transgender guidance had been blocked in court

A new rule regarding transgender students should, based on that pesky little thing called the constitution, come from laws created by Congress. But as it generally pertains to our public school system, much of the control comes at the local and state levels. At least that is the way it has been for the first twenty five decades or so here in America.

So President Trump did nothing more than make the decision not to challenge the current ruling from a Federal Justice that decisions on transgender bathroom and locker room use was a state and municipal issue.

There was no "roll back" or "withdraw" or any "halting" taking place of any sorts here, as there was technically no "rights" ever established. But then again, what place does the actual "truth" have with the media these days.

The President is attacking the First Amendment. But our esteemed host will support is, because of Trumpism.

Friday's White House press briefing, normally an on-camera affair open to all reporters with press credentials, was turned into an exclusive event for certain outlets hand-picked by the administration.

The action came after President Trump on Friday described the media and what he terms "fake news" as "the enemy of the people."

On the list were Trump-friendly outlets such as Breitbart News, the Washington Times and OANN, a conservative television network that employs former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as a commentator.

Off the list were some of Trump's favorite targets, including the New York Times and CNN. The Los Angeles Times was also excluded.

The off-camera briefing with Sean Spicer, the press secretary, was not solely for conservative outlets. Several mainstream reporters were also allowed in, as were pool representatives who transmit news events to a far larger group of reporters.

The Associated Press and Time magazine were also invited but declined to participate in solidarity with other news organizations that were denied entry.

The White House Correspondents' Assn. protested, as did editors at several of the organizations that were excluded.

In a statement, Times editor Davan Maharaj said that it was "unfortunate that the Los Angeles Times has been excluded from a White House press briefing today."

"The public has a right to know, and that means being informed by a variety of news sources, not just those filtered by the White House press office in hopes of getting friendly coverage," Maharaj said.

"Regardless of access, The Times will continue to report on the Trump administration without fear or favor," he added.

No, the president is criticizing the press big diffrence.

And the president is using his first amendment right of free association to choose who he'll meet or not meet.

The press is free to write or broadcast pretty much anything they please without fear of government intimidation.

This does not mean they have a right of access to any representative of the government.

The government in fact does not have to schedule press conferences, press gaggles or any other formal or informal meeting with the press and there is not a lot the press can legally do to force those meetings.

Now if a president has use the department of justice or the FBI to intimidate reporters then you say the President is Attacking the first amendment.

But President Trump has not done that. The only president since Nixon to do that was Barack Obama.

And when he did do that you didn't say boo. You were good with it.

C.H. Truth said...

So Roger....

It was okay when Obama only took 6-8 questions per press conference and always took them from the same outlets?

But's a first amendment problem when Trump takes over 40 questions from 24 different reporters during his now famous press conference last week because he isn't catering to the organizations "you" would like him to?

There is nothing in the First Amendment that gives CNN,NY Times, and WaPo privilege over FOX, Briebart, or the Washington Times.

If Obama can freeze out FOX News for seven years because he deemed them hostile, then why would you have an issue with Trump freezing out outlets he deems hostile?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Or you "reap what you sew"...

President Donald J. Trump railed against the news media Friday, saying reporters shouldn't be allowed to use anonymous sources. He said he's been a target of unrelenting criticism by unnamed people, and he predicted that negative stories would "dry up like you've never seen before" if anonymous sources were jettisoned. The President said that the free press should not be "allowed" to us anonymous sources.

If that was illegal, Richard Nixon would not have been exposed as a co-conspirator in the Water Gate burglary of the Democratic National Party. "Deep throat" has been unknown until within the last year of so. Woodward and Bernstein relied on "Deep Throat" . His comments today were nothing short of a direct assault on the Constitution.

You have lost any credibility you had.

This is serious. Pence is very conservative. But unlike Trump, he is sane. In a normal election, I'm a moderate Democrat. In a normal election, if we lost, ok. Let's just get on with the business of running the country. We should work together and address the issues. That involves compromising with the President, and get the White House back in four years. But we don't have a rational President, with Donald Trump. We have to demonstrate that he's f##ing crazy, and try to get enough rational Republicans, and stop this man from tearing the country apart. He is thinking that he can do something to sensor the use of anonymous sources. That is a clear violation of the First Amendment, that guarantees freedom of the press. If he actually tries to stop the use of anonymous sources, that he should be impeached. I will take Pence over over Trump, with no regrets.

I still find it how you can support a guy who started his tail to the Oval Office, with the blatantly racist "birther" movement.

Several years before you could vote, I saw Richard Nixon was behind the Watergate break in. Given the way you are posting here, you would have been standing up for Nixon against the anonymous "Deep Throat" as not credible and would have agreed with Nixon who fired the independent investigation on Water Gate. Hell, you probably think Nixon was right to do so, because he has the sacred (R).

AP Exclusive: DHS report disputes threat from banned nations

WASHINGTON (AP) — Analysts at the Homeland Security Department's intelligence arm found insufficient evidence that citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries included in President Donald Trump's travel ban pose a terror threat to the United States.

A draft document obtained by The Associated Press concludes that citizenship is an "unlikely indicator" of terrorism threats to the United States and that few people from the countries Trump listed in his travel ban have carried out attacks or been involved in terrorism-related activities in the U.S. since Syria's civil war started in 2011.

Trump cited terrorism concerns as the primary reason he signed the sweeping temporary travel ban in late January, which also halted the U.S. refugee program. A federal judge in Washington state blocked the government from carrying out the order earlier this month. Trump said Friday a new edict would be announced soon. The administration has been working on a new version that could withstand legal challenges.

https://apnews.com/39f1f8e4ceed4a30a4570f693291c866

The Homeland Security report is based on unclassified information from Justice Department press releases on terrorism-related convictions and attackers killed in the act, State Department visa statistics, the 2016 Worldwide Threat Assessment from the U.S. intelligence community and the State Department Country Reports on Terrorism 2015.

The three-page report challenges Trump's core claims. It said that of 82 people the government determined were inspired by a foreign terrorist group to carry out or try to carry out an attack in the United States, just over half were U.S. citizens born in the United States. The others were from 26 countries, led by Pakistan, Somalia, Bangladesh, Cuba, Ethiopia, Iraq and Uzbekistan. Of these, only Somalia and Iraq were among the seven nations included in the ban.

Of the other five nations, one person each from Iran, Sudan and Yemen was also involved in those terrorism cases, but none from Syria. It did not say if any were Libyan.

The report also found that terrorist organizations in Iran, Libya, Somalia and Sudan are regionally focused, while groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen do pose a threat to the U.S.

The seven countries were included in a law President Barack Obama signed in 2015 that updated visa requirements for foreigners who had traveled to those countries.

The truth will set you free.

Jonah Goldberg got this exactly right.

I firmly believe that society should have some compassion for the transgendered. And that’s true whether you take transgenderism on its own terms or if you think it’s a disorder of some kind. Cuomo is right that people should err on the side of tolerance.

But you know who else we should have tolerance for? Twelve-year-old girls who don’t want to see male junk in the girls’ locker room. We should also have tolerance for parents who do not like the idea of their daughters going into bathrooms with cross-dressers or any other grown man who insists that he has a right to use the little girls’ room. And there are, by my rough calculation, 1 million times more people who fall into these latter categories.

Hard cases make for bad law. Life deals a lot of hard cases to people. The way the Founders got around the problem of hard cases is by pushing most questions down to the most local level possible. They were wary of trying to nationalize every issue. The Trump administration was entirely right to change the federal government’s guidance on this issue. They would be wrong, in a spirit of nationalism, to declare that every school, city, and state should follow a single “right-wing” policy toward the transgendered, just as it was wrong for the Obama administration to impose a single “left-wing” standard. If some communities come to different conclusions about how to handle the question, based upon local values, limited resources, etc., so be it. Who is to say that even the Wonder Twins of policymaking — Bannon and Priebus — can know better than a local school board or city council?

opie said...

Yeah, the liar in chief can't keep anything straight!!!!

“They did not explain that I called the fake news the enemy of the people. They dropped off the word fake.”

Mr. Trump tweeted on Feb. 17, “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!”

All of the news organizations Mr. Trump named actually quoted the tweet in its entirety or specified the outlets he called “fake.”

Just like califat.....FAKE!!!

Trump rejected a report by his own DHS. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL REPORTS.

An intelligence report by the Department of Homeland Security contradicts the White House’s assertion that immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries pose a particular risk of being terrorists and should be blocked from entering the U.S.
The report is the latest volley in a struggle between intelligence officials and the Trump administration that has rippled across several agencies. Some officials have critiqued administration policies, while the president and senior members of his staff have accused officials of leaking information to undermine his administration and the legitimacy of his election.

The report, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, came from Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis. It said that its staff “assesses that country of citizenship is unlikely to be a reliable indicator of potential terrorist activity.” The White House on Friday dismissed it as politically motivated and poorly researched.

This looks like another targeted leak by an Obama loyalist to torpedo an administration policy.
