The left erroneously compares temper tantrum protests with Tea Party...

Senate Democrats should use any and all means, including the filibuster, to block confirmation of President Trump's Supreme Court nominee. They will almost surely fail. But sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war.

This is purely about politics. Republicans hold the presidency, majorities in the House and Senate, 33 governorships and total control of the legislatures in 32 states. If the Democratic Party is going to become relevant again outside of its coastal redoubts, it has to start winning some elections -- and turning the other cheek on this court fight is not the way to begin.

And I can't help thinking back to 2009. Republicans made an all-out effort to stop the Affordable Care Act. Ultimately, they failed. Obamacare became law. But this losing battle gave tremendous energy and passion to the tea party movement -- which propelled Republicans to a sweeping victory in the 2010 midterm election. It is hard not to see an analogous situation on the Democratic side right now.

Sorry, but I would argue that it's equally hard to not see the significant and relevant differences here.

Now I don't blame the Democratic pundits for trying to make this sort of analogy. After all they want to believe that the problems with the Democratic Party right now are a fluke and that they are just an election or two away from the permanent majorly they see themselves entitled to.

But there are significant differences between the two movements. The current movement was a movement even before Trump got elected. For all practical purposes nothing has changed other than they they were previously revolting against proposed policies (and the general idea of Donald Trump) where as now they are protesting these implemented policies (and the general idea of Donald Trump). To the degree that there is an evolution to the revolution is that they have convinced themselves that the election result was unjust, and ultimately their potential policy concerns became real policy concerns.  The movement has not expanded from where it was. In fact it has likely declined in numbers, even as it has increased in intensity. Meanwhile Trump is doing exactly what Trump said he would do during the campaign. Nothing more, nothing less at this point.

On the flip side, most people expected Barack Obama to keep his promises of working to unite Americans, and most importantly bringing the economy back from the dead. They did not want to see him demand that "he won" and "elections have consequences" and then ignore the economy (and the opposition Party) while spending all of his political capital on an over-reaching and unpopular health care insurance reform, that was built entirely on partisanship, procedural gimmicks, and false promises about keeping your insurance, keeping your doctor, and saving $2500/year.

The Tea Party movement was in many ways the result of broken campaign promises, lies, and the hubris of going too far with a policy that was not what was campaigned on. It was a reaction to what felt like a political bait and switch. Because the President's and Democrat's actions were not consistent with the campaign, the Tea Party movement grew over time, and included many people who had previously supported Obama or may not have come out and voted at all.
_______

Bottom line here folks: The key to the Democrats waging a similar revolution to the Tea Party movement is not more intensity, more violence, or more protests in general. It isn't about fighting dirty, being partisan, or not backing down. In fact, it's not really anything they can control with their own actions.

The Tea Party movement was not brought about by anything the Republicans did. It was brought about entirely by what the President and Democrats did and didn't do. The Democrats pushed their policies too hard and they did not follow their own campaign rhetoric. They ultimately failed to deliver what they promised to the American public after Americans trusted them with control of the Presidency and both chambers of Congress.

Perhaps Trump and the Republicans will do something similar. But if all Trump and the Republicans do is attempt to make good on their campaign promises, and continue to meet resistance from the Democrats at every turn... it's not going to bolster any new popular movements for the Democrat's cause. It's only going to reinforce the same partisan whining from the very Democratic base that is simply not large enough to carry them to the sorts of election victories that they want to see again. If anything it may reinforce to many Americans that the system is broken, and that one of the two Parties will do whatever they can to make sure it doesn't get fixed.

ah, your hypocrisy is showing again.

the fact is, tea party violence was as scarce as hen's teeth, while the voter fraud you deny exists is legion.

the overwhelming majority of tea party rallies were polite, peaceful, orderly, and the attendees often left venues cleaner than they found them. and i still get a chuckle out of MSDNC's attempt to smear them, particularly in once instance where they implied explicit racism but showing an AR-15 draped over the shoulder of an attendee. only one problem - MSDNC cropped out the gun owner. we found out later via the wide shot photo that the guy was BLACK.

Black bloc "anti-fascists" attacked right-wing media figure Gavin McInnes outside a New York University building on Thursday night.

McInnes was there to give a talk to students, but was incessantly interrupted by hecklers. Afterward, masked black bloc protesters assaulted the controversial former Fox News personality and sprayed him with mace. Eleven people were eventually arrested.

"I saw Gavin McInnes and I wanted to punch him in the fucking face, but he got away," said one protester.

Meanwhile, a New York University professor screamed at the police for not engaging in violence against McInnes and his followers (the so-called "Proud Boys"). Her tirade was captured on video. Watch below, starting at the 10:20 mark:

"You are fucking assholes!" the professor shouted at the New York Police Department (NYPD). "You're protecting the Nazis!"

The NYPD had arrived on the scene to prevent violence and escort McInnes out of the building safely. But the professor seemed to think the cops' job was to shut down a speaker she didn't like—by engaging in explicit violence against him.

"You should kick their ass!" the professor declared, referring to McInnes and his entourage. "You should!"

Note that the professor—a dead ringer for Melissa Click, by the way—considered violence to be beneath her and her owns students.

"These are kids who are trying to learn about humanity!" she said. "They're trying to learn about human rights and against racism and xenophobia, and LGBTQ rights, and you're letting these fucking neo-nazis near here! It's not up to these students to kick the ass of a neo-nazi! They don't have to raise their fist! They were taught to be peaceful! Fuck you!"

So according to the professor, it's college students' job to contemplate humanity and practice tolerance, and it's the cops' job to beat up people with whom the left disagrees.

State pension costs doubled after rate increases
State payments to CalPERS next fiscal year are expected to total $6 billion, nearly double the $3.2 billion paid six years ago before a wave of employer rate increases.

A new state budget proposed by Gov. Brown last week also shows that state payments to CalSTRS for the fiscal year beginning in July are expected to be $2.8 billion, nearly double the $1.5 billion paid three years ago when a rate increase began.

https://calpensions.com/2017/01/16/state-pension-costs-doubled-after-rate-increases/

"In the long shadow of the recession, the share of the population in the work force sunk to 62.4 percent in September, the lowest level in nearly 40 years. The government calculates that number by counting the people who have a job or are actively looking for one. That means students, retirees and stay-at-home parents are generally not considered part of the labor force.

"Indeed, the shrinking of America's workforce is largely due to broader demographic shifts. The labor force peaked at 67.3 percent of the popuation in 2000 and has been drifting downward ever since. The biggest driver has been the retirement of Baby Boomers, who are turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 each day. Young people are also staying in school longer and less likely to work during their studies."

The tribal delegation visiting Sheikh Abdelraouf al-Dhahab was still talking in the very early hours of the morning last Sunday when his nephew, Abdullah, noticed strangers approaching on foot across the rocky, inhospitable terrain of central Yemen.

"Who are you?" Abdullah called out into the night. "Who are you?"

The men shot him dead.

THE TWO-WAY
One U.S. Service Member Killed, Several Others Injured During Raid In Yemen
Startled by the gunfire, the Dhahab family scrambled to take up its own weapons and defend its house.

According to accounts by locals, this was the way the battle began with U.S. special operations forces and some of their allies, which would unfold over several hours on the ground — and end with an aerial bombardment.

By dawn, one American sailor was dead and three other service members were injured. Locals say numerous civilians, including women and nine children, were among the Yemenis killed. The U.S. military has opened an investigation, and U.S. military officials tell NPR that civilians were indeed among the victims.

Taken together, claims and counterclaims from the U.S. military and local residents described a chaotic operation, one that drew sharp criticism from Yemeni officials who usually support the U.S. The aftermath of the raid shows the potential dangers if the U.S. military relaxes its current restrictions about using force and protecting civilians, which President Donald Trump has asked the Pentagon to review.

One local man, Sadeq al-Jawfi, was monitoring the battle from his village about 3 miles away, in constant telephone contact with men from his tribe who were visiting the Dhahab family.

A Saudi-led airstrike in Sanaa, Yemen's capital, destroyed a funeral hall in October.
Hani Mohammed/AP
American officials described the raid as an attack on a compound. But Jawfi's description was of a family house in a village with similar houses, albeit one with guard posts, where people were well-armed.

The Dhahabs and other families fought against the American raiders, who called in air support. The bombardment struck houses in which families were sheltering.

------------

Can you just imagine what our esteemed host would be saying about this disaster, if President Hillary Rodham Clinton had ordered this to go, while at a dinner party with friends and family? He would be calling for her head on a spike. President Donald Trump was not in the situation room.

This is another example of how the ultra partisan politics have altered the pursuit of the coldheartedtruth.

A federal appeals court on Sunday ruled that President Trump’s controversial immigration order will remain suspended for the time being, allowing those previously banned from coming to the United States at least another day to get here.

The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit preserves a lower judge’s order to temporarily halt the ban — and based on a schedule the court outlined, the stop will remain in place at least until sometime on Monday. Trump responded to the development Sunday by writing on Twitter that he had “instructed Homeland Security to check people coming into our country VERY CAREFULLY.” A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman did not immediately return messages seeking comment on how, practically, that screening would be implemented.
