Biggest story since Watergate Part XVII

So the biggest story since Watergate "this week" is that current Attorney General Jeff Sessions had contact with Russian Diplomats "during the campaign".  When asked about possible discussions regarding the Trump campaign and Russians, Sessions was said at his hearing that he was unaware of any meetings between the Trump campaign and the Russians, and that he personally had not had any contact with anyone regarding the Trump campaign.

Now the unhinged left is demanding Jeff Sessions' head on a stick because Sessions twice had contact with Russian Diplomats. Once was in a meet and greet with twenty seven foreign diplomats (one happening to be Russian), and another was a meeting with a Russian Ambassador. Of course there are three rather large problems with this particular scandal:

  • Jeff Sessions was not part of the Donald Trump campaign. Not listed as part of his campaign management. Not listed as an domestic adviser. Not listed as a foreign policy adviser. Not listed as part of campaign communications. Not listed what-so-ever as being associated with the campaign.
  • Jeff Sessions was a Senator at the time and taking both informal and formal meetings with foreign diplomats was part of the job.
  • There isn't the slightest shred of evidence that the meetings in question had anything to do with Donald Trump's campaign.

Herein lies the current state of reality that the unhinged left is living in. Apparently if there is any sort of meeting between anyone loosely associated with Donald Trump and anyone who happens to be from Russia... it must have been about the hacking of DNC and Clinton campaign web servers. This is a little like that person who finds out you are from the state of Minnesota and figures you must know the Petersen family from Edina.

So someone like Al Franken can become as wild eyed and bushy tailed as he wants over something like this... and all it does is add to the public's belief that the entire Democratic Party has become completely unhinged, that they are too far down the rabbit hole of Russian hacking to focus on reality, and that it's well well past time for them to "get over it" and move on with whatever it is that they plan to do moving forward as the minority Party.

If Eric Holder or Loretta Lynch met with a Russian ambassador this would be a non-story.

Look what they did with Lynch's ex-parte and totally inappropriate meeting with Bill Clinton.

The story is full of portentous implications. This is what it’s all about: “The previously undisclosed discussions could fuel new congressional calls for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 presidential election. As attorney general, Sessions oversees the Justice Department and the FBI, which have been leading investigations into Russian meddling and any links to Trump’s associates. He has so far resisted calls to recuse himself.”

The Post’s story has triggered a Pavlovian response from Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi has called on Sessions to resign.

The Post devotes seven reporters to the story. Despite the manpower devoted to the story, the text reports nothing on the substance of the conversations and lacks any detail at all on the alleged July meeting. In one of several videos connected to the story, however, lead reporter Adam Entous states: “What we learned is that there was an informal discussion that basically Sessions had in July with the Russian ambassador to the United States on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention and that there was a second encounter, that one a much more formal one, that took place in Sessions’s Senate office that took place in September…”

Quotable quote: “The Russian ambassador did not respond to requests for comment about his contacts with Sessions.”

The "failing" New York Times.

In the Obama administration’s last days, some White House officials scrambled to spread information about Russian efforts to undermine the presidential election — and about possible contacts between associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump and Russians — across the government. Former American officials say they had two aims: to ensure that such meddling isn’t duplicated in future American or European elections, and to leave a clear trail of intelligence for government investigators.

American allies, including the British and the Dutch, had provided information describing meetings in European cities between Russian officials — and others close to Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin — and associates of President-elect Trump, according to three former American officials who requested anonymity in discussing classified intelligence.

Separately, American intelligence agencies had intercepted communications of Russian officials, some of them within the Kremlin, discussing contacts with Trump associates.

The disclosures about the contacts came as new questions were raised about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s ties to the Russians. According to a former senior American official, he met with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, twice in the past year. The details of the meetings were not clear, but the contact appeared to contradict testimony Mr. Sessions provided Congress during his confirmation hearing in January when he said he “did not have communications with the Russians.”

The top Democrat on Nunes’ committee, Adam Schiff of California, said it’s too early to rule out that contacts occurred between Trump’s campaign and Russian officials.

"First of all, we haven’t received any of the evidence yet," said Schiff. "We can’t draw any conclusion, nor should we." Schiff said he "strongly" disagreed with Nunes’ comment about McCarthyism. At this stage, the committee shouldn’t exclude anyone as potential witnesses, including White House officials, the lawmaker said.

Congressman Dan Kildee: Attorney General Sessions Must Resign
March 2, 2017

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) released the following statement after it was reported that Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings about meetings with Russian officials:

“The Attorney General lied under oath to Congress about his own communications with the Russians. Corruption and lying by public officials cannot be tolerated whatsoever. The Attorney General must resign.”

“Congress must call a bipartisan, independent and outside commission to investigate President Trump’s political and financial connections to Russia. The American people deserve the truth.”

During his confirmation hearings, under penalty of perjury, Mr. Sessions told the Senate Judiciary Committee, “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”

but the contact appeared to contradict testimony Mr. Sessions provided Congress during his confirmation hearing in January when he said he “did not have communications with the Russians.”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

uh, no it didn't.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. before the presidential election last year, his spokeswoman confirmed, raising questions about whether he misled senators who inquired about the Trump campaign's ties to Moscow.

Sarah Isgur Flores told NBC News that Sessions did have a conversation with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak last year. The meeting was first reported by The Washington Post.

But she said "there was absolutely nothing misleading about his answer" because Sessions was asked during the hearing about "communications between Russia and the Trump campaign" and not about meetings he took as a member of the Armed Services Committee.

According to his spokeswoman, Sessions' meeting with Kislyak was just one of 25 conversations with foreign ambassadors in his role on the committee.

Democrats alleged that Sessions misled the Senate Judiciary Committee on Jan. 10.

Because a Senator sitting on the Armed Services Committee met with foreign ambassadors (including the one from Russia) as part of his job?

I thought the reason that the GOP was going to lose both houses and that Trump would be impeached was due to the incoming National Security Adviser General Flynn having phone conversations with foreign leaders that included Russian Diplomats?

Or where those telephone conversations "not" the biggest story since Watergate as you claimed just a scant couple of weeks ago?

I guess I am still looking for the appropriate law that forbids U.S. Government officials from meeting with or speaking to anyone from Russia?

that's flatly false.

Here, via C-SPAN, is the transcript:

Franken: CNN just published a story alleging that the intelligence community provided documents to the president-elect last week, that included information that “Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump.” These documents also allegedly say “there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government.” Again, I’m telling you this as it’s coming out, so you know. But if it’s true, it’s obviously extremely serious, and if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?

Sessions: Senator Franken, I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.

Franken: Very well.

sessions was not a surrogate or part of the campaign at the time. his meetings with the russian ambassador were in the context of his position as a senator on the armed services committee. and the day before THAT meeting, he met with an emissary from ukraine. the national laughingstock left out THAT meeting.

In light of a report that Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke with the Russian ambassador during the 2016 presidential campaign — seemingly contradicting his testimony before the Senate — Republicans are now calling for the Trump appointee to recuse himself from investigating Russia.

Even Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, who has been reluctant to speak out against President Donald Trump, said Thursday morning that Sessions should recuse himself because of how he answered questions in his confirmation hearing. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has cozied himself with the new Trump administration, also suggested that Sessions should pull himself from any Russian probe.

Many Democratic leaders believe that a recusal is not enough. Rep. Eric Swalwell, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, said Thursday that Sessions “should probably resign.” Sen. Al Franken, who asked the question in Sessions’ confirmation hearing that elicited a false statement, said that “at the very minimum” the attorney general “should recuse himself.”

Republican leaders this morning are calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from Justice Department investigations over the alleged links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government after new revelations that Sessions did not disclose his meetings with a Russian ambassador during the election.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said this morning that Sessions "needs to clarify what these meetings were and when did he have them."

"I think the trust of the American people you recuse yourself in these situations," McCarthy said on MSNBC. “I don’t have all the information in front of me, I don’t want to prejudge, but I just think for any investigation going forward, you want to make sure everybody trusts the investigation."

McCarthy added that it would "be easier from that standpoint” for Sessions to recuse himself.

Sessions twice met with Russian ambassador in 2016 despite denial
Democrats call for Sessions' resignation amid reports of contact with Russians
House Oversight Committee chair Jason Chaffetz echoed McCarthy this morning on Twitter.

Sessions met twice with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the U.S., during the 2016 presidential election season, the Department of Justice confirmed Wednesday.

"I never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign," Sessions said in a statement Wednesday night. "I have no idea what this allegation is about. It is false."

Sessions told NBC News this morning that "whenever it's appropriate I will recuse myself."

During his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions was asked by Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., what he would do if there was evidence that the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government.

"I'm not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians and I'm unable to comment on it," Sessions replied.

Sessions, however, held a meeting in his Senate office with Kislyak in September. The meeting was listed on his public schedule.

According to The Washington Post, Sessions also encountered Kislyak at a Heritage Foundation event in July, which a Justice Department official described as a "brief encounter."

Which is your argument:

So after meeting with Ambassadors from twenty some countries as part of his position on the Arms Service Committee... you are saying he should resign or be fired because one of those Ambassadors was from Russia?

Or...

So after being asked about Trump campaign members meeting with Russian "intermediaries" about the fact that "Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump" - you think he should resign or be fired because he did not disclose that he had a public meeting with the Russian Ambassador as part of his role as a Senator on the Arms Service Committee?

Do you honestly believe that meeting with Russian Ambassadors is illegal, or that the Russian Ambassador would be considered an "intermediary" who was trying to black mail the Trump campaign over compromising personal information that included the now debunked claim that he was involved with golden shower play with Russian hookers?

Remember when during the election, and Bill Clinton v met with the Attorney General, on her airplane? You were absolutely certain that they discussed their investigation on Hillary Clinton? Why do you believe that he never discussed the election? But you believe Sessions. Gee, of course!

Because it was part of Senator Session's responsibility as a Senate Arms Committee to meet with foreign Ambassadors. If you actually believe he met with the Russian Ambassador to talk about Donald Trump's golden shower prostitute meetings? Then what did he talk to the other 20 some Ambassadors about?

Because everyone understands that the Attorney General should not be meeting in a private location with the Husband of someone who was part of a high profile investigation that was in the process of recommending or not recommending charges.

_____

In other words, Roger. The Sessions meeting was normal every day business that he had with Ambassadors from all around the world.

The Lynch Clinton meeting was neither normal, appropriate, or had any other useful reason for happening. Do you really believe that they would take the chance of being caught... because they desperately wanted to talk about Grandchildren?

think it through, gin blossom. it's not hard if you try.

sessions had reason to meet with the russian ambassador at a senator on the armed services committee.

bubba, otoh, had no legitimate reason to meet with lynch other than to influence lynch's involvement in the FBI investigation into queen cankles.

there's really no logical or legitimate comparison between the two, which explains exactly why you decided to try and make one.

C.H. Truth said...

It is irrelevant to this issue.

It was the topic of the questioning, Roger. Franken didn't ask him a broad question about whether or not a Senator might meet with an Ambassador from Russia.

Franken's line of question was in regards to (his word) "intermediaries" as it pertained to the damaging information that the Russians supposedly had on Donald Trump.

So the context of the question that Franken asked was whether or not Sessions had knowledge or participated in any of these meetings with "intermediaries"...

It's a semantic argument to suggest that when Sessions said he was unaware of anyone from the Trump campaign meeting with Russians (intermediaries) and that he didn't meet with them... that he was lying.

I am guessing most people would understand the difference between a clandestine meeting that involved blackmail demands, and Senators meeting with Ambassadors as part of normal ongoing diplomacy.

Commonsense said...

He REPEATEDLY said that he had NO discussions on any issue

No, he said he has no discussions about the Trump campaign with the Russians.

THOMAS FRIEDMAN: I think those who have suggested that Jeff Sessions perjured himself in his testimony have a lot of evidence for that.

ALISYN CAMEROTA: Why, do you think, aren’t more Republicans up in arms about this?

FRIEDMAN: Ali, I think it is one of the most shameful things I’ve seen in almost 30 years being in Washington, DC.

. . .

On 9/11, we lost 3,000 of our brothers and sisters. At Pearl Harbor, we lost thousands of people. These were huge events. I don’t compare it in terms of lives lost. But in terms of import, this was a direct assault on the very thing that makes us unique as a nation: the fact that we rotate power legally, freely, okay, and we don’t challenge that.

And the fact that the Russians attacked this, that for less than the price of a MIG-29, for less than the price of a MIG-29, Vladimir Putin intervened in our election and helped to create, helped to elect a chaos candidate, which is exactly what Putin wants, because he is out to destroy the West. The fact that the Republican party is sitting there on its hands, not responding to this, looking the other way, and looking for excuses for it, is one of the most shameful national security cases I have ever seen in Washington, DC.
