How twisted is "this" logic?

So congress is attempting to investigate who in the intelligence community may have monitored members of the incoming Trump administration, under what authority (if any) they monitored, and who may have publicly exposed the specifics of what was uncovered.

The fact that there was very specific information about conversations between a Russian ambassador and General Flynn released to the media is more than enough evidence to conclude that either members (like Flynn) were under subpoena, or that laws were broken in exposing Americans who were inadvertently captured in legal surveillance of foreigners.

Now the irony of this sort of investigation is that Congress literally has to request information from the very intelligence agencies that they are attempting to investigate. To this point, reports are fairly consistent that the FBI and other sources are being less than forthcoming. Why wouldn't they be less than forthcoming considering the situation. After all, they are being asked to provide evidence that their organizations broke the law.

However, these agencies all roll up into the executive branch.  Sessions, Comey, Pompeo, Coats all answer to the President. Moreover, with the exception of Comey, none of them were involved or can be acccused of any of the wrongdoing being investigated.

Bottom line is that there is simply an authority to access and gather information from the intelligence communities at the executive level that doesn't exist with other branches of the Government. Congress can ask for, or subpoena such information. But as we have learned, the intelligence community has any number of ways to parse, delay, deflect and otherwise obstruct Congress from getting full disclosure.

So now Democrats in Congress are upset that information was passed from people within the executive branch to Devin Nunes (who is leading the investigation). Information that very likely has been asked for, but not provided by the intelligence sources in question. Information that apparently shows evidence of what everyone at this point has already figured out... that the Trump team was being monitored, and that people and information was illegally exposed.

So if your sole goal was to really investigate what happened (and not to take partisan sides by attempting to prove the side of the story that benefits you politically) - why would the actual offering of information you are otherwise unsuccessfully attempting to gather through normal channels cause you grief?

It's almost as if certain people would prefer "not" to know the truth?

Your willingness to twist logic beyond any resemblance to reality is unbelievable. I'm reminded of the excuses given by the Nixon lawyers in WaterGate.

This is the key part of the lawyer's letter.

General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit.

Out of respect for the Committees, we will not comment right now on the details of discussion between counsel for General Flynn and the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, other than to confirm that those discussions have taken place.

But it is important to acknowledge the circumstances in which those discussions are occurring.

Notwithstanding his life of national service, the media are awash with unfounded allegations, outrageous claims of treason, and vicious innuendo directed against him.

He is now the target of unsubstantiated public demands by Members of Congress and other political critics that he be criminally investigated.

No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution.

The first part is interesting. "a story to tell". He was one of the first Trump supporters, and he had the ear of Mr Trump. He was his key source of military affairs, and intelligence community for Mr Trump. He lead a "lock her up" chant at the Republican convention.

The second is lawyer speak for he's not guilty, but there is a witch hunt that might find him guilty, even if he's innocent.

Every day, something comes out that Mr Trump or his staff, may have been in contact with the Russian government. Contact with foreign countries is not unusual. But despite the claim by Vladimir Putin, who denied that the Russians were trying to influence and damage the credibility of our electoral system, there is evidence that the did try to influence the election, and damage the credibility of our election.

So far we have not seen conclusive evidence that they worked together. So, one way or another, he should be granted immunity.

I personally think that a special investigation should be directed to provide the truth, no matter what the data takes it.

The Senatorial committee looks like they are going to conduct a bipartisan investigation, as the Constitution gives them the responsibility to oversee the executive branch. I was impressed with the joint news conference. The grown-ups made me comfortable. So I would accept this because of who are in charge, are going to follow where the data takes them. The Senate committee refused to grant immunity. It will depend on the Trump controlled DOJ. That could raise even more questions.

Firm hired by DNC & relied on by FBI to prove Russia hacking forced to withdraw anti-Russian report

Reported in January, the FBI based its decision that it was the Russians that hacked into the DNC computers on a report commissioned by the DNC and generated by a company called CrowdStrike (the FBI was never allowed to examine the DNC server). The VOA recently caught CrowdStrike creating a bogus and unrelated hacking charge against Russia, and making up the facts to prove its veracity.

To make their determination that the Democrats were hacked by Russia, the FBI relied exclusively on information from private digital forensics company Crowdstrike. It wasn’t the FBI’s fault the DNC wouldn’t allow the FBI to look a their servers for the hacking investigation, instead forced them to use the Crowdstrike report paid for by the Party.

At the time a senior FBI law enforcement official told Wired,

“The FBI repeatedly stressed to DNC officials the necessity of obtaining direct access to servers and data, only to be rebuffed until well after the initial compromise had been mitigated.”

Neither the FBI, House Intelligence, or Senate Intelligence have given him immunity.

The overriding phase I heard is that it's "widely premature" to give him immunity.

So what we have here is an FBI who after eight months of investigating Russian interference in the election does not have enough evidence to either indict Flynn or bargain with him for immunity.

Or a Senate or House intelligence committee ready to cross the FBI to know what he knows.

It could be no there, there.

Could be that the "Russian hack" of the DNC was really a CIA opt. We now know the CIA can make a hack look like a Russian hack.

That would be embarrassing (as well as illegal).

What is fairly obvious is that the intelligence community like the IRS stinks of politicization.

The VOA reported:

U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has revised and retracted statements it used to buttress claims of Russian hacking during last year’s American presidential election campaign. The shift followed a VOA report that the company misrepresented data published by an influential British think tank.

In December, CrowdStrike said it found evidence that Russians hacked into a Ukrainian artillery app, contributing to heavy losses of howitzers in Ukraine’s war with pro-Russian separatists.

VOA reported Tuesday that the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), which publishes an annual reference estimating the strength of world armed forces, disavowed the CrowdStrike report and said it had never been contacted by the company.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense also has stated that the combat losses and hacking never happened.

CrowdStrike was first to link hacks of Democratic Party computers to Russian actors last year, but some cybersecurity experts have questioned its evidence. The company has come under fire from some Republicans who say charges of Kremlin meddling in the election are overblown.

After CrowdStrike released its Ukraine report, company co-founder Dmitri Alperovitch claimed it provided added evidence of Russian election interference. In both hacks, he said, the company found malware used by “Fancy Bear,” a group with ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

CrowdStrike’s claims of heavy Ukrainian artillery losses were widely circulated in U.S. media.

On Thursday, CrowdStrike walked back key parts of its Ukraine report.

The company removed language that said Ukraine’s artillery lost 80 percent of the Soviet-era D-30 howitzers, which used aiming software that purportedly was hacked. Instead, the revised report cites figures of 15 to 20 percent losses in combat operations, attributing the figures to IISS.

The company who the DNC and FBI relied on not only made up a problem that didn’t exist, but then blamed it on Putin’s Russia. Shouldn’t that call into question the entire premise that it was the Russians who hacked into the DNC?

Former Vice President Joe Biden blamed his own party for losing the 2016 election, telling a crowd at the University of Pennsylvania that Democrats ignored one of its core ideals during the campaign: maintaining “a burgeoning middle class.”

Mr. Biden sat down with University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann for a wide-ranging discussion at the new Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement. Without specifically naming Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, the former vice president said his party lost to President Trump because it failed to pay attention to struggling middle-class workers during the campaign.

“I think that what happened was that this is the first campaign that I can recall where my party did not talk about what it always stood for, and that is how to maintain a burgeoning middle class,” Mr. Biden said.

“You didn’t hear a single solitary sentence in the last campaign about that guy working on the assembly line making 60,000 bucks a year,” he said, “and a wife making $32,000 as a hostess in a restaurant and they’re making 90 grand and they’ve got two kids and they can’t make it and they’re scared. They’re frightened, because they’re not stupid.”

Mr. Biden said while globalization has been a “phenomenal success” on a macroeconomic level, it’s also “left a lot of people behind.”

He also dispelled the liberal talking point that the working-class voters who elected President Trump are racist."

Sorry Roger -

There is no evidence or anything that suggests that the Trump team "colluded" with the Russians prior to the election. Furthermore, there really isn't anything technically illegal with communications between Trump's transition team and anyone from any other country.

According to sources, the FBI investigation is nothing more than them looking into the so called dossier, that was a bought and paid for Democratic attack piece on Trump.

We both know that the congressional investigation is nothing more than political theater and that there is no teeth to it anyways.

The lawyer for General Flynn referred to the investigation as a partisan witch hunt. As other attorneys have suggested, he would be derelict in his duties if he didn't ask for immunity. One legal expert consider it to be almost and automatic (like a defense attorney asking for a dismissal of a case after the prosecution rests - which nine times out of ten is rejected).

The reality is clear here Roger. If Trump, Flynn and gang... were really conspiring in an evil plot to take over the world with Vladimir Putin (as you seem to believe is the case) - then why would Trump have fired Flynn?

He's smart enough to make four billion dollars, take over the Presidency, and plot with international leaders... but too dumb not to piss of those who could bring his devious plot down?

Erica Chenoweth is one the leading scholars on authoritarian regimes and how to overthrow them. In her book Why Civil Resistance Works, she compiled 323 cases of nonviolent and violent campaigns in order to assess which were more successful in achieving their stated goals of regime change. Much to her surprise, Chenoweth discovered that nonviolent campaigns were nearly twice as effective as armed campaigns over the past century.

Chenoweth says the most effective variable in toppling a dictator is the number of people participating in a movement. Chenoweth argues that many more people—and more diverse groups of people—participate in nonviolent campaigns than in activities perceived to be violent. She concludes that this means nonviolence is not merely a moral choice for an individual, but a strategic necessity for a movement.

I sat down with Professor Chenoweth to discuss how her work studying efforts to overthrow dictators abroad can relate to resisting Trump at home, and whether authoritarianism is rising in the United States.

How do mobilizations like the Women’s March and the airport rallies impact the Trump administration?

They signal that resistance to the administration’s plans is alive and well, and they signal this to lots of important audiences. The first audience is other would-be protesters, who may be more willing to participate as they see the movement growing and winning key gains. The second audience is the silent majority, who may see the protests and demonstrations as reason to interpret the Trump administration’s actions with more skepticism. The third audience is the people who actually implement policy—Congress, law-enforcement officials, civil servants, and others who may be involved—who see that implementing the policies might be too costly, thereby motivating them to resist internally. And the fourth audience is people observing abroad, who see the resistance as a sign that the preferences of the American electorate are actually quite different from those of the American president. Public resistance can help to temper the consequences of any reckless missteps from the administration.

Do you consider Donald Trump to be an aspiring authoritarian?

There are certainly demagogic aspects of his behavior: disregard for institutional limits of his own authority, disregard for democratic norms and human rights, bullying and threatening political opponents, scapegoating of the vulnerable, mischaracterizing opposition to his plans as treachery, and a seeming indifference to understanding the US Constitution. But it’s also important to recognize the broader authoritarian currents in the American polity that put him in power.

What is the typical playbook of an authoritarian?

There is a pretty typical authoritarian playbook when it comes to weakening civil society. It’s basically a divide-and-rule strategy.

First there are strategies to reinforce elite loyalty through purges, paying off an inner entourage, and co-opting oppositionists through threats and bribes.

Second, there are strategies to suppress or undermine opposition. This includes using direct violence against oppositionists or their associates, of course, but it also involves counter-mobilizing one’s own supporters, infiltrating the movement, expanding surveillance, using pseudo-legitimate laws and practices that criminalize or increase penalties for erstwhile legal behaviors, adding administrative, financial, or legal burdens to civil-society groups, and planting plainclothes police and agents provocateurs to push the opposition into chaotic and/or undisciplined behavior.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Third, autocrats use strategies to reinforce support among the silent majority and other observers. This includes scapegoating foreigners and outsiders for domestic problems; mischaracterizing oppositionists as terrorists, traitors, coup plotters, “thugs,” or communists; censoring information or engaging in misinformation campaigns; and co-opting or bullying the independent media into submission. As authoritarians consolidate power, all of these behaviors tend to increase in frequency and intensity.

This describes Trump far more than I like. And it's true.

Why President Trump's abysmal popularity rating won't hurt him

If you perked up at news this week that President Trump's approval rating had dipped to 37 percent, according to figures tracked by Gallup, you should un-perk.

The truth is, whether Trump is in the 30s or 40s — or even 20s or 50s — simply doesn't matter much. For those of us between the ages of 25 and 100 years old, this is going to take some getting used to.

We are accustomed to believing that a president needs to be popular to see his agenda become law. Presidents from Woodrow Wilson to George W. Bush used their political capital, the democratic legitimacy that is uniquely their own in presidential systems like ours, to marshal public support for, say, the League of Nations or the Iraq War. "We must remember that it is the president who sets the agenda for our government," former Speaker John Boehner said on Election Night 2010, when Republicans won control of the House in a historic shellacking of President Obama.

President Trump no doubt sees himself in this vein, too. That's one of the reasons he enjoys public rallies in red states so much: Trump desperately wants to be a popular president in the traditional sense. But that is clearly not how our government is behaving right now. It is behaving more like a parliamentary democracy.

The problem with Roger's thesis is that we don't live in a dictatorship or an autocracy but a democratic republic.

The trick is that to win in a constitution democracy, you have to persuade a great many people to your point of view.

People running around in pussy hats don't persuade, neither does irrational opposition.

If you want to win back the white house and congress then you will have to come up with something more then "I hate Trump and think he's dangerous".

Back when the truth mattered, Roger.

You cannot logically deny one of the following:

That the incoming Trump team was being monitored by the outgoing administration. General Flynn (for instance) was fired because there were transcripts of his conversations with the Russian ambassador.

that Trump associates were being captures on legitimate surveillance of foreign parties. But that people within the outgoing administration illegally unmasked those identities and conversations to the public.

There is no "third logical reality".

There is no objective way that you can claim that Nixon's actions were any worse than what has been happening with Trump and his associates.

- Richard Nixon resigned because he was caught monitoring his political opponents... and he didn't even do anything with the information. He was just paranoid and wanted it.

- This administration walks away as heroes in many people's eyes for monitoring their political opponents (either legally or illegally)... and then openly breaking the law by leaking that information in a blatant attempt to try to politically undercut the credibility of the incoming Presidency and Administration.

So how does it matter Roger. You know the law was broken (one way or the other) in a blatant attempt to hurt the political stature of Donald Trump... yet you defend those actions full throttle.

Why? Because in 2017 you care more about political partisanship than anything else. Back in 1974 you probably actually cared that our Politicians followed the law.

California Rep. Adam Schiff may not offer much by way of substance, but give him marks for political flimflam. The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee was so successful at ginning up fake outrage over his Republican counterpart that he successfully buried this week’s only real (and bombshell) news.

Mr. Schiff and fellow Democrats spent this week accusing Chairman Devin Nunes of carrying water for President Trump, undermining the committee’s Russia investigation, and hiding information. The press dutifully regurgitated the outrage, as well as Mr. Schiff’s calls for Mr. Nunes to recuse himself from the investigation into possible Russian electoral meddling.

All this engineered drama served to deep-six the important information Americans urgently deserve to know. Mr. Nunes has said he has seen proof that the Obama White House surveilled the incoming administration—on subjects that had nothing to do with Russia—and that it further unmasked (identified by name) transition officials. This goes far beyond a mere scandal. It’s a potential crime.

2: Three million illegal immigrants voted in the election, and every one of them, voted for Clinton.
3: He takes credit for the Ford Motor Company expansion of American operations. They CEO of Ford, clearly stated that the decision, far outdated the results of the 2016 election. Auto management makes such decisions far ahead of time. Look it up.

Then there is the rrb inspired insults, claiming that I'm not interested in the truth.

The truth is not important to me. The real truth and nothing but the truth is at the core of who I am.

Bill Maher said that people like you are enablers, like in the 1950 Sunset Boulevard, and I expanded that. You are enabling a 70 year old man, who obviously to those who think for themselves, see his erratic behavior.

Tweets at 3:00 AM.

Hell, the fact that he uses Twitter to set foreign affairs policy. His behavior when the German Prime Minister was at the White House. The German government and not FAKE NEWS press, stated that she believes that he is unbelievably ill informed. Our allies have grave doubts about his mental instability.

You are an enabler, without any doubt. I'm not the only one who posts here who have said as much. It is a tragedy that you have been overtaken by your decision to support anything Trump says or does.

Roger -

Donald Trump is the President of the United States.

I may not have agreed with Barack Obama, but I always referred to him as President, I never demanded that he shouldn't be allowed to be President, and I never once made any suggestion that there would be a reasonable reason for anyone to break the law to try to undercut him.

At a generic objective institutional level here Roger...

You are supporting the concept of our own intelligence communities breaking the law in order to undercut the credibility and political capital of a duly elected President.

Why? Because you don't like this particular President and seem to think that that provides some justification?

Guess What Roger... there are always people who are going to disagree with whoever the next President is. Do you really feel it helps anyone if we deem it acceptable for the "deep state" or the intelligence communities to undermine the executive office, because they don't like the person running it?

Because that is exactly what you are advocating. The normalization of using the intelligence community to monitor and expose things about political opponents.

You should believe that this is "always" wrong...
Yet you simply don't because the President is Donald Trump.

Lastly... assuming someone eventually is charged with this. Do you believe that there is anywhere in the law that allows for these actions as "justifiable" over political differences?

Try this, do you really think that the US Economy in 2017 is going to do worse then 7 years under Obimbonomics?

Obama's worst year was a - 2.9 in 2009.

The Keystone Kops In the White House

John Cassidy: “Ten weeks ago, when Trump stormed into office attacking the media and promising a blitzkrieg of new policies and initiatives during his first hundred days, the dominant emotion among people who hadn’t voted for him was fear. Many commentators, myself included, warned about the dangers of democratic erosion, and sales of George Orwell’s 1984 soared.

“Today, there are still plenty of reasons to be concerned about Trump and his illiberalism. The White House’s recent decision to dismantle President Obama’s clean-air regulations offers fresh testament to the malevolence of the Trump Administration’s agenda, and next week’s meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, China’s President, will be a reminder of the enormous responsibilities that rest on a President’s shoulders. But, even among ardent Trumpophobes, fear and foreboding have been supplemented by wonderment at the White House’s string of gaffes. These days, instead of Big Brother, it often looks like the Keystone Kops are in charge.”

well, look at what you're focused on. 3 things that don't amount to a pimple on a gnat's ass. no serious person cares about those things. and this is why it's impossible to take YOU seriously.

you're obsessed with taking trump literally, while the rest of us are taking him seriously.

By a strange coincidence, 43 miles was my bike ride yesterday :) But the boring same-old in the Alpharetta area.

Appalachian trail over blood mountain....Nice trail, great view off the top...Can be done in an afternoon.

BTW WP...Vogel state park has a bunch of cabins they rent out.....They seem to be very well maintained and seem to have all the amnenties for a comfortable stay. The park is only a few miles from the blood mountain trail head and would be a great base for hiking the area which also includes the brasstown bald system.
