If Lindsey Graham is open to the nuclear option...

Then I am betting McConnell has the votes to get this done. Schumer and the Democrats are playing a game of chicken that they will not only lose "short term" but likely lose "long term" as well.

Filibustering Gorsuch as a replacement of Scalia means they will not be able to filibuster the next potential candidate that President Trump nominates to the court. As stated before, the Democrats could make much a much more valid political point by saving this option for when it really matters. Unfortunately for the Democrats, they have been engaged in short term strategic thinking that allows them to win some short term battles, while continuing to lose the long term war. It's the main reason why they are at century long political lows.

If your "Trump is right" President is at record lows since we started polling on the popularity, the public will blame "President Trump is right", not the Democrat party.

The same applies to the D.O.A. TrumpCare that is going down the drain.

March 23, 2017 - U.S. Voters Oppose GOP Health Plan 3-1, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Big Opposition To Cuts To Medicaid, Planned Parenthood Quinnipiac University Polling

American voters disapprove 56 - 17 percent, with 26 percent undecided, of the Republican health care plan to replace Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Support among Republicans is a lackluster 41 - 24 percent.

If their U.S. Senator or member of Congress votes to replace Obamacare with the Republican health care plan, 46 percent of voters say they will be less likely to vote for that person, while 19 percent say they will be more likely and 29 percent say this vote won't matter, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.

Disapproval of the Republican plan is 56 - 22 percent among men, 56 - 13 percent among women, 54 - 20 percent among white voters, 64 - 10 percent among non-white voters, 80 - 3 percent among Democrats, 58 - 14 percent among independent voters and by margins of 2-1 or more in every age group.

One out of every seven Americans, 14 percent, think they will lose their health insurance under the Republican plan. That 14 percent includes 27 percent of voters in families with household income below $30,000, 18 percent of working class families and 14 percent of middle class families.

Fewer Americans would be covered under the GOP plan than are covered under Obamacare, 61 percent of voters find, while 8 percent say more would be covered and 18 percent say the number would be about the same.

"Replacing Obamacare will come with a price for elected representatives who vote to scrap it, say many Americans, who clearly feel their health is in peril under the Republican alternative," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

It is "very important" that health insurance be affordable for all Americans, 85 percent of voters say. Another 13 percent say it is "somewhat important."

When it is explained that federal funding for Planned Parenthood is used only for non- abortion health issues, American voters oppose cutting federal funding to Planned Parenthood 80 - 14 percent, including 60 - 32 percent among Republicans. In a simple question, without the explanation, voters oppose cutting Planned Parenthood funding 61 - 33 percent.

Voters also oppose 74 - 22 percent, including 54 - 39 percent among Republicans, cutting federal funding for Medicaid.

Only 12 percent of American voters say the Republican health care plan would have a positive impact on their health care, as 30 percent say it will have a negative impact and 50 percent say it will have no impact.

President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress should repeal all of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), 20 percent of voters say. Another 50 percent say repeal parts of the ACA and 27 percent say don't repeal any of the ACA.

Voters disapprove 61 - 29 percent of the way President Trump is handling health care.

This "plan" doesn't feel any more well planned than Obamacare. I think they would be much better served moving the tax cuts and other more popular measures through before taking on this fight.

Obviously they do not have an adoring media around to provide any cover if they "undo" Obamacare under the same circumstances that it was originally passed. The media will obviously fight them every step of the way. The dishonest CBO reports will provide them much fodder.

All that being said, other pollsters suggest that the rank and file Republicans still want Obamacare repeal (regardless of replacement) and that independents are still unhappy with Obamacare.

Perhaps the best step is to just repeal what you can (mandates, taxes, etc) and make the Democrats take some ownership of a new plan. For once have both Parties work together for something (rather than work for political gain).

I am pro-choice... but even I can see that if federal funding pays for everything else... then it leaves them more of their other funding to pay for abortions.

The better question is whether or not the federal Government should be funding Planned Parenthood or other women's clinics that do not provide abortion services?

I would wonder out loud... if this is really just about women's clinics (and not about abortions) why does the left continue to get angry when politicians attempt to move the funding away from Planned Parenthood and to other clinics that provide everything else PP does... but offers things that Planned Parenthood doesn't? Ryan and Trump surrendered on their big ObamaCare Repeal bill - not because of any Democratic resistance but because of the unreasonableness in their own party! Trump delivered his ultimatum, declared he was done negotiating, and no one cared. They can't even get it past the House. That it's as I expected doesn't make it any less funny.

You'd think that after this fiasco it will dawn on the GOP that their extremist wing isn't going to stop their obstruction just because their own party is in power, and that the path forward is to compromise enough that moderate Democrats will go along with their legislation. But somehow I doubt it - it's going to take more than one big failure before they decide that the humiliation is worse than upsetting the whack-jobs.

So they're probably going to put this aside - though I'm sure they'll eventually get something to vote on - and get on with cutting taxes and entitlements. But there too, as long as the super-rich are paying anything, and if the working class are getting a break, the nut-jobs are going to dig in their heels and demand more. Who knows, maybe they'll use their budget-default trick again, against their own Party leaders. I'm looking forward to it.

What's somewhat counter-intuitive in this case is that those Justices that seem to have the most intellectual abilities to see "world class legal reasoning" tend to be more strict constitutionalists. Largely because they are actually attempting to interpret legal precedent, the law, and the constitution.

Expressive constitutional interpretations is really a code name for bending and distorting laws and precedents to get to a desired outcome, that generally comes 100% from political leanings (rather than the law).

Oddly (and I think WP would agree) that the strict constitutionalists are probably less predictable in their rulings than the expressive constitutional interpretaionalists... because the former may or may not follow a political path, where as the latter pretty much can be guaranteed to follow a political path.
