Dems to rally around Comey!!!

Suddenly, every liberal loves James Comey! A few days ago he was the second most hated man, right behind Donald Trump.  But today, the man they claim single-handedly believe stole the election out from underneath Hillary Clinton is now a martyr that demands their support.

The firing of James Comey and the subsequent reaction from the left is proof positive that they actually have no consistent position on ANYTHING other than they flat out will oppose absolutely everything President Trump does.
_______

Now, I can relate to those who question the timing of such a move. I can openly wonder why it wasn't done during the transition. It should have been clear to everyone that Comey had two chances of a long stay. Slim and none. Why keep him around? The "only" reasonable explanation was about politics. That it may look bad to cut him loose while in the middle of several investigations. But how long does that drag out before you reach the point of diminishing returns?

UPDATE: It has been noted that James Comey actually reports directly to the Deputy Attorney General and that Rod Rosenstein had been sworn in just two weeks ago. It would then seem logical that Rosenstein would have reviewed his direct reports (including Comey). So in this regard, the timing seems perfectly normal.

The truth is that James Comey and the entire FBI (by proxy) had become a political circus, who almost nobody took seriously anymore. Comey acted as if his entire job was to appease both political Parties while not offending either. He hadn't been and wasn't being transparent about certain things for political reasons and he was too transparent about other things for political reasons. But probably worst of all was that he had a caviler disinterest in the know criminal actively involving sensitive leaks that likely came from people within his charge.  He honestly didn't seem to know what he was supposed to be doing as director.

The ultimate job of the FBI or any law enforcement is to follow up on criminal activity, not chase conspiracy theories. There are only a limited about of resources available, and there are too many known criminal actions out there to be playing politics. How long do you investigate "any" allegation without actually finding evidence before you move on? A couple weeks, a month, six months? You certainly shouldn't be "still" looking for evidence to back allegations nearly a year later. Either you have it or you don't. Either there is something, or there is no "there" there. It really shouldn't matter what politicians or people in the media say. The FBI's job is not to appease. The fourth amendment requires them to have due cause (evidence) to do much of what is involved in investigating any American citizen, including those in political positions. This simple fact seems to have been forgotten.

Bottom line: There have been two three ongoing investigations into the completely unfounded allegations of conspiracy between Trump and Russia. The first of these investigations started over a year ago. The other will no doubt continue for several more months. At this point in time, there is ZERO evidence that there is any truth to these allegations. Zero. None. Nada.

Sorry Trump haters... we don't need a third fourth.

Yet, your answer would be to demand another investigation?

An Attack on American Democracy

John Cassidy: “At a time like this, it is important to express things plainly. On Tuesday evening, Donald Trump acted like a despot. Without warning or provocation, he summarily fired the independent-minded director of the F.B.I., James Comey. Comey had been overseeing an investigation into whether there was any collusion between Trump’s Presidential campaign and the government of Russia. With Comey out of the way, Trump can now pick his own man (or woman) to run the Bureau, and this person will have the authority to close down that investigation.

“That is what has happened. It amounts to a premeditated and terrifying attack on the American system of government. Quite possibly, it will usher in a constitutional crisis. Even if it doesn’t, it represents the most unnerving turn yet in what is a uniquely unnerving Presidency.

“Things like this are not supposed to happen in a liberal democracy, especially in one that takes pride, as the United States does, in safeguards put in place against the arbitrary exercise of power.”

Comey Wanted More Money for Russia Investigation

“Days before he was fired, James Comey, the former F.B.I. director, asked the Justice Department for a significant increase in money and personnel for the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the presidential election,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Comey asked for the resources during a meeting last week with Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who wrote the Justice Department’s memo that was used to justify the firing of the F.B.I. director this week.”

The Questions About Russia Will Only Grow Louder

James Hohmann: “Trump doesn’t grasp it yet, but firing Comey will only lead to more, and louder, questions about Russia, as well as what exactly Trump knew about Flynn and when he knew it. Sometimes it turns out that the simplest explanation is the correct one. Is it possible that the president kept his national security adviser in the White House for 18 days after he’d been warned by the acting attorney general that he had been ‘compromised’ and was vulnerable to ‘blackmail’ by Russia because he had authorized the conversations in question?”

Trump’s Bet May Have Derailed His Agenda

John Harwood: “President Trump has made an enormous bet that takes the entire Republican agenda hostage and could even shorten his time in office.

“His bet is that now, with James Comey under fire across the political spectrum, he could fire the FBI director investigating his campaign and associates with a minimum of blowback.

“The muted initial reaction from many Republicans offered encouragement to the White House. But subsequent criticism, as the news sank in, from the Republican senator leading the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation and others underscored the risks facing Trump.”

James Hohmann: “Every piece of Trump’s agenda just became harder to get through Congress. Democrats will be less inclined than ever to work with this president, and the liberal base will become even less tolerant of red state incumbents collaborating with him. It’s going to be really hard to get to 60 votes for anything Trump wants for a while. Whoever Trump nominates as Comey’s replacement will face a brutal confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. It will get saturation-level media coverage.”

No James... the firing means that Trump followed through on what everyone expected had to be done.

Evidence would be something that actually shows that there was collusion between Trump and the Russians.

Considering that our own intelligence community are not actually even sure exactly "who" it was who hacked the DNC and Clinton email - other than to know they are Russian... how do you suppose they will find evidence of Trump not only contacting those people, but actually colluding to help them?

opie said...

Does everyone include McCain, Sasse, Amash, Burr, Krauthammer, et al or did you just make up that everyone expected it to be done. Hyperbole CH? Or are you so biased that trump can shit on your table and you still would have dinner?????? I do believe the intelligence community pretty well declared russian as the hackers. I guess that, like GW, is not enough to convince you.

C.H. Truth said...

Opie - being surprised by the timing isn't the same thing as being surprised by the firing. I am surprised by the timing, but would have been a lot more surprised if Comey was still director a year from now.

That being said McCain and Krauthammer have both been long time Trump critics and quick to judge him. Obviously Trump said some fairly negative things about McCain and he has pretty much ran in the opposite direction from the neo-conservative ideals pushed by Kristol, Krauthammer, and gang.

I know for some of you with lower intelligence, it's difficult for you to get past Republican/Democrat... but the world is actually a little more complicated than that sort of binary thinking. I don't hold out much hope for you to ever understand.

I always figured that if Trump didn’t fire him on Inauguration Day, he could never pull it off. Obviously, Comey thought the same thing. If he were fired now, in the midst of that Russian “investigation” non-investigation, the same Democrat hacks who had been calling for his head last October would now be demanding for his stern visage to be hewn onto Mount Rushmore.

And so some Democrats tried, last night, some with more success than others. Pedestrian minds like Ed Markey conjured up the “Saturday Night Massacre” of 1973. Others fell back on the “uncharted waters” cliche. New York Sen. Chuck Schumer wearily read a pro forma statement, then was quickly asked about his statement last Oct. 28 that he had “lost confidence” in Comey.

Schumer quickly ended the press conference.

It was the most amusing evening of cable TV news since Nov. 8. The Democrats’ heads were spinning like they were in a remake of “The Exorcist.” The Ministry of Truth was working overtime. The moonbats weren’t turning on a dime, they were doing wheelies, they were braking and backtracking so fast.

Michael Moore, that fat fraud, Jan. 24: “Collaborators and besties Trump and FBI Director Comey go in for a kiss.”

Michael Moore last night: “COMEY FIRED! Dirty, corrupt things afoot.”

Hillary flack Brian Fallon, Jan. 10: “Comey has become a punchline.”

Fallon last night: “I’m not shedding any tears for Comey personally — he hurt FBI’s reputation — but I do worry whether we ever get to the bottom of Russia now.”

We already have, Brian. It’s a dry hole. As Gertrude Stein once said of Oakland, there is no there there.

The hypocrisy really gets ratcheted up with John Oliver, the No. 1 darling to so many liberal anti-Trumpies, who regularly attacks GOP tax schemes as giveaways to the rich and detrimental to the poor. (Again, that’s an apt description, but they evinced less rage about Obama’s economic and tax policies, which also funneled money upward to an extreme degree.)

For years, Oliver has criticized the estate tax, which defenders, in a smart linguistic move dreamed up by Frank Luntz, long ago labeled the “death tax”; and the tax code’s raft of loopholes that benefit special interests he identified as oil companies and hedge fund managers. Oliver even briefly established the bogus Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption to draw attention to tax-exempt status granted to churches and charities.

Back in July 2014, in an episode in which he lamented the Wealth Gap in America” (which has resulted in the richest one percent of Americans controlling 20 percent of annual income), Oliver said, “At this point the rich are just running up the score…What sets America apart is that we are actively introducing policies that disproportionately benefit the wealthy,” such as tax cuts and loopholes like trusts.

So it’s a little surprising to discover that just months before, Oliver had a tax attorney set up two revocable trusts, one for him and one for his wife, to hide the couple’s purchase of a $9.5 million Manhattan penthouse. Then he used a tax loophole created by Donald Trump himself back in the 1970s, when the current president was merely a prominent New York real estate developer and aspiring celebrity author.

The loophole in question is the banally named “421-a” tax dodge, which was recently attacked in a Daily News op-ed written by two New York state Democrats, one a senator and the other an assemblyman. They said that the original 421-a tax exemption was “designed to encourage new development in locations that were vacant or underutilized,” but that Trump wanted to use it in 1980 when he bought Bonwit Teller in midtown Manhattan. The plan was to tear it down and build Trump Tower, which would mix office space and luxury condos.

Both claims are false. Yet your usual justifications on what he says or does, excuse him. You are consistent.

As for concerns about the timing, isn't that obvious? Trump wanted to have his officials in place in the organization structure above Comey before firing him. Simple as that.

C.H. Truth said...

Roger - Trump firing Comey is not a partisan move. Clinton would have fired him had she become President. As would probably anyone who became President.

This was also not an "angry" decision. It was not "knee jerk". It was either planned for some time and waiting till he had his ducks in a row (as W.P. Suggests) or it was actually based on the recommendations of Sessions and Rosenstein (less likely).

Also, it had becoming increasingly clear that Comey didn't view anything he did as being wrong. Perhaps the only chance he had to save his job was to admit mistakes, and change course. He didn't.

You obviously didn't actually "read" the letters of Trump, Sessions, and Rosenstein... because none of those letters had anything to do with Russian involvement or anything else your liberal media friends are probably spoon feeding you with.

I offer that once again... you refuse to do your own research or take the five minutes it would take to read the dismissal letter and recommendations. You could come across as more informed (and less of a parrot) if you took that time.

Comey’s Firing Came as Investigators Stepped Up Russia Probe

FBI director had been providing updates to top members of the Senate Intelligence Committee

WASHINGTON—In the weeks before President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, a federal investigation into potential collusion between Trump associates and the Russian government was heating up, as Mr. Comey became increasingly occupied with the probe.

Mr. Comey started receiving daily instead of weekly updates on the investigation, beginning at least three weeks ago, according to people with knowledge of the matter and the progress of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe. Mr. Comey was concerned by information showing possible evidence of collusion, according to these people.

White House officials said Wednesday that Mr. Trump had for months been contemplating the possibility of removing Mr. Comey, and that the dismissal this week wasn’t connected to the Russian probe.

Roger - there is an FBI investigation, a House investigation, and a Senate investigation. This is exactly the same sets of investigations that covered the Clinton Email fiasco.

The Clinton FBI investigation started in July of 2015 and Comey made his announcement that there would be no charges in July of 2016. That was one full year...

According to the FBI, they have been investigating the Russian hacking and any possible collusion by any Parties since July of last year... that's only two months short of the Clinton investigation...

and still neither the FBI or any of the Congressional investigations have found any evidence of collusion between the Russians and Trump.

How long should an investigation go on for, before you throw in the towel and admit that there is no "there" there?

I will ask you this, Roger... is this "still" American, where you are considered innocent until proven guilty, and where the fourth amendment protects people from unwarranted searches, seizures, etc... without the due process of authorities providing probable cause?

Come talk to me when Trump has his server subpoenaed and refuses to turn it over and has a third Party wipe it clean before the FBI actually physically seizes it.

Come talk to me when Trump associates all cut immunity deals for their testimony... while the Justice department approves one attorney representing everyone.

Until then, the fact that there is no evidence IS the overriding factor. There can be very limited investigations without probable cause (which requires evidence).

At the end of the day, you want a "possibility" investigated ENTIRELY for political reasons. You are willing to ignore constitutional rights to get there.

C.H. Truth said...

Democrats and liberals cannot seem to stop mischaracterizing what is actually being investigated. The New York Times editorial perfectly captures the irresponsible hyperventilating: “Mr. Comey was fired because he was leading an active investigation that could bring down a president.” The Times links to its own report of Comey’s testimony in March confirming the existence of an FBI probe – but this does not remotely prove what the Times wants its readers to believe. Josh Marshall, characteristically, gets even more overheated, claiming that “the FBI is investigating the President and his top associates for colluding with a foreign power to subvert a US election” and that “[t]here is only one reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the decision to fire Comey: that there is grave wrongdoing at the center of the Russia scandal and that it implicates the President.”

If you look at the available facts, instead of wild speculation, this is nonsense. As I detailed at length at the time, there is no such investigation: Comey’s own testimony in March demonstrated that he was pursuing a counterintelligence investigation, aimed at Russia – not a criminal investigation of Trump. That makes all the difference in how such an investigation would proceed (it is likely to be conducted in secret, without any endpoint, and without the goal of indicting anyone) as well as what inferences we should draw from its existence (counterintelligence probes don’t require anything resembling probable cause to believe that any American has committed a crime). Of course, such investigations sometimes spin off criminal investigations; it appears that the FBI is handing out subpoenas to business associates of deposed National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, after revelations of the extent to which he was on the payroll of Russian interests before the election, and Flynn as well as others like Carter Page or Paul Manafort may potentially face legal jeopardy for failure to comply with foreign-lobbyist-disclosure requirements and other disclosure and ethics rules. But while that would be embarrassing to Trump, it’s a very long way away from the sort of thing that “could bring down a president.”

In political terms, the problem for Republicans is that as long as the investigation is secret, Democrats can continue to make it look worse than it is. They have a license to spin conspiracy theories like Marshall’s, without the need for any facts or evidence; they can just say “the FBI is investigating this,” knowing full well that’s not what the FBI is doing but that the FBI won’t say so. That seems to be precisely what ate at Trump, who went out of his way to say in his letter firing Comey that “I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation,” and Politico reported that

"He had grown enraged by the Russia investigation, two advisers said, frustrated by his inability to control the mushrooming narrative around Russia. He repeatedly asked aides why the Russia investigation wouldn’t disappear and demanded they speak out for him. He would sometimes scream at television clips about the probe, one adviser said."

[...]

Follow the facts, and make them public, and the politics will take care of itself.

Bit of advice Roger.

Use Reynolds wrap to make your hat. The generic tin foil brands just don't cut it.

oh he's waaaaaaaaaaay past that.

ol' rog needs some aircraft-grade aluminum like a fender off a new ford truck to protect his skull these days.

a mental health professional lurking these pages would want to have him committed to a small room with rubber wallpaper.

It would then seem logical that Rosenstein would have reviewed his direct reports (including Comey). So in this regard, the timing seems perfectly normal.

Only to bootlickers like you and the rest of the sycophants here. In that regard, you now believe the BS spewing from the DC swamp, hook line and sinker. Trump led the charge, the rest is pure lies. Nicely done, CH.

Which is great news for those using their insurance and no sign of a R plan. Brilliant, pauline. Keep cheering.

Why is Donald Trump afraid of an investigation into the charges of cooperating with the charges of cooperation with the Russians to influence the election?

Oh I don't think Donald Trump is afraid or "fucking scared" of an investigation.

I can see however, how he can be impatient with the progress of the investigation.

It's been 10 months and the FBI has not uncovered any evidence of a crime occurring much less any wrongdoing by Trump's campaign associates.

This despite their access to all the (extra-constitutional) wiretapped conversations and communications between Trump associates and Russian nationals.

Right now it's an investigation in search of a crime. If this was a normal investigation that was similarly fruitless, it would have been closed.

And since the investigation was made public (illegally leaked), there should be a statement outlining their final findings.

ARE YOU REALLY THIS STUPID!?!?!?!

There are three investigations going on! Three of them!!! The same exact investigations that were taking place over the Clinton Email situation.

Three investigations Roger!!

Three investigations...

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE ALREADY THREE INVESTIGATIONS...

There is absolutely no evidence that Trump has not cooperated fully or that anyone else on his team has not cooperated. NONE WHAT-SO-EVER!!!

Since we have had and currently have three investigations and they have been going on for several months... and none of those investigations (in spite of full cooperation) has yielded anything... tell me why we need a fourth?

You act as if it's not being investigated. WHY? Are you stupid?

Which means what???? Too bad the bias of the R led investigations will never publish a single finding that may go against the donald unless the failed NYT's publishes it first. With Comey fired, now the FBI investigation is suspect. Your confidence in not knowing the truth is a sign of your weak minded buying all the crap that they say, especially the huckabee spawn who would say anything she is told to....a good little spokesman.

Like flynn ignoring the senate request that is now under subpoena ?? Or the grand jury that is now involved. I guess that is cooperation in Minnesota and their frozen brains.

Last time I checked Opie...

General Flynn was fired for lying to his boss.

I guess you still see him as "on the team" huh?

And let's be clear. His attorney tried to strike a deal for his testimony, as any attorney would. Clinton aides all got immunity to testify and they got the FBI to agree to destroy evidence after it was handed over.

What Flynn's attorneys were doing doesn't account to not cooperating. That is trying to agree to the terms of his cooperation.

The Senate refused to make a deal and instead subpoenaed information. The lack of cooperation is on their side at this point.

Now if Flynn happens to play a Clinton and lose all of the documentation that is being subpoenaed, then we are in the same boat as the Clinton cooperation. But if he turns it all over (as I am sure he will) then he will be far ahead of the Clintons.

Until then, he has not obstructed or otherwise disobeyed anything.

Just as I thought, trump bootlickers will be in charge of the investigation. Yeah, CH, the are lots of investigations being done, all by partisans, which is exactly what you want. Sad, the truth is your enemy CH.

And refuses to turn over documents requested by the senate and are now subpoena'd. He also asked for immunity, which you think proves nothing. Yep, he sure is cooperating for weak minded sycophant like you. LOL!!
