Fair and balance leaking

Source: Russians broached idea of back line communications... not Kushner
A December meeting between Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and one of the senior advisers in the Trump administration, and Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak at Trump Tower focused on Syria, a source familiar with the matter told Fox News Monday.
During the meeting the Russians broached the idea of using a secure line between the Trump administration and Russia, not Kushner, a source familiar with the matter told Fox News. That follows a recent report from The Washington Post alleging that Kushner wanted to develop a secure, private line with Russia.
The idea of a permanent back channel was never discussed, according to the source. Instead, only a one-off for a call about Syria was raised in the conversation.
In addition, the source told Fox News the December meeting focused on Russia's contention that the Obama administration's policy on Syria was deeply flawed.
The source has told Fox News that Kushner is eager to tell Congress about the meeting and any others of interest.

Well, there you go. How will the liberals (who seem very taken with the concept of unnamed sources) react to the unnamed source that is stating that the meeting was all about how flawed the Obama policy was in regards to Syria... and that it was Kislyak (not Kushner) who apparently made the "naive rookie mistake" of suggesting back channel communications?

My guess is that they will demand that unnamed sources are not reliable when they provide information to FOX News. They will demand that unnamed sources can only be trusted when they leak to the Washington Post and Politico. You know, something with the typical liberal hypocrisy attached to it.

Personally, I take it all with a grain of salt. The only thing that we can be assured of is that there was a meeting that took place where Kushner and Kislyak quite obviously had conversations about mutual concerns. What they spoke about and who brought up what will probably never be known to us for sure.

At this point, how does anyone know for sure what is and isn't true.

Our never knowing the contents of those discussions is likey something that Trump and Kushner hope for. But, if it was all benign and ordinary they could simply honestly tell us, and then we'd know.

On the other hand, if there were enough conversations, with enough individuals involved, even if Kushner clams up we'll likely be able to piece together what it was about. It's way too early to try to discredit the evidence CH - at least wait until you can see and evaluate it!

wphamilton said...

"Russians Claim to Have Dirt on Trump" - The Russians would never lie about something like that. It's not like they've ever planted false information through channels monitored by US intelligence ... oh, wait ...

C.H. Truth said...

WP - The reality is that we will likely never really know what was said in those meetings. At best, we will find out what Kushner and the other Trump associate "said" was talked about.

Even the leaks acknowledge that the information in question was intercepted "Russian to Russian" (after the meeting) and that the meeting itself was not monitored (as that would be a clear violation of our surveillance laws).

As of today there is no indication that Kushner will be anything but forthright about the meeting. Kushner's attorneys have stated he is looking forward to talking to the FBI and clearing things up.

____

You seem to logically discount the reasonable explanation that the meeting was totally benign and that nothing illegal or unethical actually happened.

So I don't think you actually want something that is simple and honest. You simply will not accept or believe an innocent explanation.

What you really mean to say... is that short of Kushner admitting to some horrible wrong doing, you will just assume that he is lying and that we will not know what actually happened.

Russians Claim... error. I should have put that in the past tense, as below:

Russians Claimed to Have Dirt on Trump

“Russian government officials discussed having potentially ‘derogatory’ information about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and some of his top aides in conversations intercepted by US intelligence during the 2016 election,” CNN reports.

“One source described the information as financial in nature and said the discussion centered on whether the Russians had leverage over Trump’s inner circle. The source said the intercepted communications suggested to US intelligence that Russians believed ‘they had the ability to influence the administration through the derogatory information.'”
__________________

We may assume, Wp, that in this case they were not lying, for these were inter-Russian communications that were intercepted. Seems they were saying, We have things that could make Trump's election more difficult if we should choose to release them.

Apparently they chose rather to release "dirt" on Clinton instead.

I would love to know what that dirt was, wouldn't you?

Trump Has Already Proved Himself a Russian Asset

Jonathan Chait: “Over the last several days, the Russia scandal has taken a darker turn. Friday night, the Washington Post reported that Jared Kushner tried during the presidential transition period to set up a secret communications channel with Moscow. Tuesday morning, CNN reported that, during the 2016 campaign, Russian officials discussed having leverage of a financial nature over Trump, which could be used to manipulate the Republican nominee. The exact nature of this relationship remains as yet unknown, but its parameters have shifted. The most innocent explanations of Donald Trump’s shadowy relationship with Russia have grown increasingly fanciful, while the most paranoid interpretations have grown increasingly more plausible.”

“Indeed, in another one of dramatic juxtapositions that would have seemed ham-handed in a spy thriller, the latest scandalous revelations came out just as Trump could be seen carrying out what looks for all the world like his end of a pact with Moscow. If the president did have an objective on his trip to Europe — a premise that, it goes without saying, cannot be assumed — it was to crack up the American alliance with Western Europe. That happens to have been Russia’s primary diplomatic objective since the end of World War II.”

White House Acts to Roll Back Birth-Control Mandate for Religious Employers

WASHINGTON — Federal officials, following through on a pledge by President Trump, have drafted a rule to roll back a federal requirement that many religious employers provide birth control coverage in health insurance plans.

The mandate for free contraceptive coverage was one of the most hotly contested Obama administration policies adopted under the Affordable Care Act, and it generated scores of lawsuits by employers that had religious objections to it.

Russia Investigation Expands to Include Trump Lawyer

“One of President Donald Trump’s closest confidants, his personal lawyer Michael Cohen, has now become a focus of the expanding Congressional investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 campaign,” ABC News reports.

Cohen confirmed that House and Senate investigators have asked him “to provide information and testimony” about any contacts he had with people connected to the Russian government, but he said he has turned down the invitation.

Said Cohen: “I declined the invitation to participate as the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of being answered.”

The problem with this argument is that it doesn't change the fact that trust in the media is at an all time low with approximately 2/3 of the Country having either no trust or a small amount of trust in the media.

Of course, the other 1/3 are gullible morons who can't see the obvious.

The media still sees themselves like people "once" saw them. They still believe they are champions for the cause, when most people sees them as dishonest grand standers constantly looking for a get rich quick gotcha story. Not to mention that they are highly partisan and rarely honest in their coverage.

They don't understand why there isn't universal outrage when one of them get's body slammed by a 56 year old congressional candidate. They don't understand why nobody takes their shit seriously anymore. The only people who seem to take any of it seriously are the other people in the media who want to talk about it.

"OVERWHELMING" EVIDENCE THAT RUSSIA MEDDLED

Evidence of Russia Meddling in 2016 Election Is ‘Overwhelming,’ Ex-National Intel Director Says

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said there has never been a case of election interference more aggressive than that involving Russia and the 2016 presidential election.

“There’s been a long history of Soviet interference going back to the Soviet era in our elections, but never, ever has there been a case of the aggressiveness and direct actions that the Russians took and their conduct of a multifaceted campaign to interfere with our election,” he told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Tuesday on “New Day.”

....“Are you 100% sure that Russia was behind the election meddling that you described,” Cuomo asked Clapper Tuesday.

“Absolutely,” Clapper responded. “The evidence, which unfortunately we could not detail in our intelligence community assessment, was, in my view, overwhelming. And that is why the assessment that we did enjoyed such a high confidence level.”

So did Barack Obama:

Voting machines were not tampered with during the 2016 presidential election, voter rolls went untouched and there were no reported security breaches of official election offices, according to former President Barack Obama and the U.S. intelligence community.

As far as 2016-related "hacking" is concerned, private individuals connected to failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had their emails stolen and leaked in batches during the election.

That's it.

The questions is whether Russia tried the influence voters it an illegal way. So far there is no evidence that Russia did anything more than the New York Times did.

WHITE HOUSE
Six things to watch as Trump faces his new reality

Trump is back in the U.S. and back on Twitter — how will he cope with the spreading crises engulfing his presidency?

The Russia investigation threatens to dramatically distract from President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda
____________

President Donald Trump hoped to score a reset with his first foreign trip but is instead returning to a barrage of controversy at home. OH AND HOW.

The Russia probe, already put under the supervision of special counsel Robert Mueller before Trump left, has now touched his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner—and threatens to fatally distract from Trump’s domestic agenda, including the health care reform bill he managed to squeak through the House. GOOD!

With Congress still on recess, Trump faces a news cycle dominated by scandals he’s largely created himself. IDIOT.

Here are six things to watch this week as Trump gets back to work at the White House.

Will Trump address the controversies around Kushner?

Kushner reportedly discussed trying to set up a secret back channel to Moscow, using Russian networks, with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a December meeting at Trump Tower, a move former senior officials say would have been highly unusual. YES, HIGHLY.

The White House has so far trotted out top officials to defend Kushner, with National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster saying he’s “not concerned” and Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly saying he thought “any channel of communication, back or otherwise, with a country like Russia is a good thing.”

But Sen. John McCain said Monday the reports made him uneasy. “I don’t think it’s standard procedure prior to the inauguration of the president of the United States by someone who is not in an appointed position,” McCain told Australia’s ABC. ONE WOULD THINK NOT.

Trump himself has been relatively mum, only issuing a statement to The New York Times that he has “total confidence” in Kushner, while reports have proliferated that the president has grown increasingly irritated with his son-in-law, HA HA especially regarding allegations that his sister, who works for the Kushner real estate company, pointed out the family’s connections to the White House as she tried to drum up business. HA HA HA

It’s not clear whether the president, whose words are being more carefully vetted by lawyers now that he’s home, will be able to resist commenting on such serious allegations against a member of his own family. PROBABLY NOT :-)

With a growing number of Democrats calling for Kushner’s security clearance to be revoked, the pressure will likely intensify upon Trump’s top adviser, and the president may not be satisfied leaving the defense of his family to other officials. HE'LL DUCK OUT? NOT LIKELY.

Will that long-rumored staff shakeup finally happen?

Mike Dubke, Trump’s communications director, submitted his resignation letter on May 18, he told POLITICO on Tuesday. His departure has been expected for weeks — and it might not be the only one.

Rumors of a shakeup in the White House communications shop abounded before Trump left. During the trip, press secretary Sean Spicer—who is set to take a lower-profile role after months hosting contentious, but closely watched, televised briefings—took a backseat role, letting other senior staff brief reporters.

While Trump was away, old campaign hands and close friends—including controversial former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, former deputy campaign manager David Bossie, and Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy—have been in talks to help manage the snowballing scandals. SNOWBALLING? AVALANCHING!

Trump’s chief of staff Reince Priebus and chief strategist Steve Bannon, both frequently rumored to be on their way out of the West Wing, returned early from Trump’s trip, in part to help manage the Russia-related crises. Kushner himself might be thinking of leaving, though it’s not clear whether Trump would push for his own son-in-law, long among his closest political advisers, to go.

But Trump often openly discusses the possibility of major personnel moves with aides and friends, without actually following through.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

And amid so much controversy, a shake-up could just give the appearance of yet more chaos in Trump’s West Wing.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

What about that Paris climate deal?

Trump has promised a decision on whether to remain in the landmark Paris agreement on climate change this week—and such an announcement could help him distract from the topic of his administration’s Russia connections.

An exit from the agreement would be in line with Trump’s campaign rhetoric, and it would allow his administration to pursue an even more aggressive push to boost the fossil fuel industry here at home. Both Bannon and EPA administrator Scott Pruitt support dropping out—but others in the administration, including chief economic adviser Gary Cohn, are pushing the other way. THEY HAVE BRAINS, YOU SEE.

Foreign allies lobbied Trump hard for the U.S. to stay in, warning that an exit from the agreement could be disastrous, both for American standing on the world stage and for the climate. Without the participation of the U.S., the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gasses, the agreement will be badly weakened—and an exit from the deal would lead to even more deterioration in the already-strained U.S.-European relationship. RUSSIA WILL REJOICE.

The president remains undecided, according to senior administration officials—but he acknowledged his indecision and even promoted his impending determination on Twitter, much as he tried to create suspense around the February announcement of his Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch. OH YEAH! BUILT IT UP AND THEN -- FIZZLE.

The decision is arguably the most consequential Trump has had to make so far — and the final decision could ultimately be a call for re-negotiation. WE SHOULD RENEGOTIATE HIS ELECTION.

What happens on health care now that Trump called for 'more' spending?

Trump still needs to get his health care reform through the Senate — no easy feat. The president took to Twitter with a rather surprising declaration on Sunday night: ”I suggest that we add more dollars to Healthcare and make it the best anywhere. ObamaCare is dead - the Republicans will do much better!” MORE DOLLARS, EH?

But his plan, the American Health Care Act, would vastly reduce government spending on health care. In fact, that’s part of the goal. SO WHERE ARE THOSE MORE DOLLARS?

And the declaration on Twitter is just the latest head-scratching comment on health care from the president. Trump’s in early May caused mild alarm WHEN HE PRONOUNCED THAT AUSTRALIA'S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, WHICH PROVIDES UNIVERSAL COVERAGE, IS SUPERIOR TO THE U. S. SYSTEM. The AHCA, however, would leave 23 million more Americans without health insurance, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
CONCLUSION: HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING.

While lawmakers have learned to largely dismiss Trump’s musings about legislation on Twitter, such statements are going to make Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s job that much more difficult, and the White House will likely be pressed to address the discrepancy.
ROTS O' RUCK.

Will Europe’s Trump-bashing continue? And will Trump hit back?

On his trip, Trump has made his distaste for European multilateralism clear, and apparently the feeling is mutual. One EU official compared Trump’s meetings with NATO leaders to “when there’s a new strange kid in the class nobody likes.” NOBODY, BUT NOBODY!

Europe “must take its fate into its own hands,” Merkel said after the visit, in a statement some took as a repudiation of the US-led order that has been central since the end of World War II.

And newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron quickly contrasted himself with Trump, slamming two state-run Russian media outlets in front of visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting at Versailles. Trump, by contrast, has repeatedly praised Putin and reserved his own media criticisms for the U.S.’s free press.
ISN'T IT NICE TO HAVE A PRESIDENT ALLY WHO WILL STAND UP TO PUTIN?

With European leaders flexing their muscles and showing a willingness to shrug off Trump, how will he respond?

Trump gave an early indication on Tuesday morning, writing on Twitter: “We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change.”

EVIL, THOSE GERMANS. VERY, VERY EVIL.

Will the White House be able to change the narrative — this week, or ever?

Trump has been critical of his administration’s press shop, and the reason is clear: week after week, the White House has been unable to drive a message or control the narrative, and instead has been thrust on the defensive. Where blame for this lies, whether in the press office or Trump’s Twitter account or the simple reality of scandal, is open for debate. THE BLAME IS ON THE IDIOT.

But Trump’s frustration is real, as is that of Republicans across government. Every new Russia story makes is that much harder to push health care and tax reforms. COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A MORE DESERVING BUNCH.

Part of Trump’s success during the campaign came from his ability to drive media coverage and control the story. The blanket media coverage that so aided him on the campaign has not been helpful in his first few months of governing. GOVERNING AIN'T CAMPAIGNING.

This week will mark one of Trump’s biggest tests yet as he tries to contain and defuse the quickly spreading scandals.
HOPE HE TANKS EVEN MORE.

CH allows,"Even the leaks acknowledge that the information in question was intercepted "Russian to Russian" (after the meeting)"

At last you acknowledge that the information in question is not the result of illegal monitoring of Kushner or Trump. Good, we can put that to rest.

If this was a one-off then you're right, we won't know for certain what he was negotiating of the Russians. But if it was one of a series, and more individuals involved, the truth will come out.

Was it truly benign, just a naive attempt to keep open a line of communications? I don't reject the possibility (as you suggest), but it's highly unlikely. Kushner is a smart guy, and this is a really stupid idea if for the nominal reasons. The odds are strongly against.

wphamilton said...

Commonsense said... No evidence of collusion is just that. No collusion.

Uh, no. Qualified, no "smoking gun", no "certitude" is vastly different than your unqualified "no evidence", "no collusion".

He said there was enough evidence to justify the FBI looking into it, but not enough for an arrest warrant. yet. That's why they conduct investigations, to find that "certitude" for a crime that evidence shows has some likelihood.

Wp shows that he understand English. CS obviously doesn't. He is the one guilty of wishful thinking.

Lets keep it simple my friend.

You said.

Both use anomalous sources.

Bottom line. Either one of them took place before Mr Trump took office. But really, either one is careless and not a lawyer, but ?? Probably not a crime, unless poor judgement is indictable. If so, the President would be behind bars by now.

I have been busy, so I didn't have any time to post, but I kept up to speed for use later.

1: The Donald insists on short, to the point briefings, without details. You and I both know, that the devil is in the details, and the President will not put the necessary hours into the intelligence briefings or the historical and current details on the countries he visited.

2: I'm getting sick and tired of the fake news bs. The writers are not constructing something out of the air. You bought into it. Someone seeking the truth, would not accept the conspiracy that would be necessary to pull this off. The New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal are not in a conspiracy, with "i will do this" and "you do that one" by George Soros. I found it hard to believe that you bought into that political spine. Flynn has said that he will provide all documents, that he had withheld before.

Kusner met with a high end banker, in the December meetings.

The Senate intelligence committee today. unanimously, authorized subpoenas.

Comey is in discussions with the Special Prosecutor too.

All roads lead back to Donald Trump.

More reports are coming from inside the White House are aghast by the behavior of the President. That is why good Americans.

Over the next several months, we are going to have ground breakers, on a daily or more than once a day. Mr Trump has brought that upon himself by his erratic behavior. He spends more time watching cable news and writing tweets than looking into the details of the tough decisions he had to make. Even George W. Bush had a better second term because he quit doing what Cheney wanted to do.

He is going to be a disaster. Bet on it.

Trump’s Legislative Window Is Closing

“President Trump faces an increasingly narrow path to win major legislative victories before the looming August recess, with only two months left to revive his health-care or tax initiatives before Congress departs for a long break,” the Washington Post reports.

“White House officials said Tuesday that Trump has become increasingly incensed that legislation is bogging down in the Senate, something they blame on Democrats… But critics from both parties have said the lack of progress is a reflection in part of Trump’s inability to marshal votes or persuade lawmakers to follow his lead.”

“The disclosures from investigations stemming from Russian meddling in last year’s election — coupled with the president’s habit of undercutting his staff — have driven away candidates for West Wing jobs that normally would be among the most coveted in American politics, according to people involved in the search.”

“For a president not steeped in policy intricacies, the decision is vexing. On both sides are voices he profoundly respects: chief executives of some of the world’s largest companies urging him to remain part of the accord and ardent conservatives like Stephen K. Well there it is, no sense of humor while still defending the stupidity of the POTUS.......LOL Don't need a spelling error to find the stupid in his tweets like obama tapped the tower....millions voted illegally....those alone should question his stability, just like you, a functioning idiot.

Rathole ignored as usual the following.....

" they interpret "no direct evidence" as..."

I did not see any smoking gun certitude evidence of collusion. But it certainly was appropriate for - given all the signs - certainly appropriate for the FBI to - and necessary for the FBI to investigate.

No one ignored his statement of no direct evidence. Simpletons like Rathole interpret that as meaning trump did nothing wrong. LOL. And ignores the evidence that warranted the FBI to look further. See Howdy Gowdy and his year long investigation of nothing which you embrace. Idiot.

Uh, no. Qualified, no "smoking gun", no "certitude" is vastly different than your unqualified "no evidence", "no collusion"..

Would be a good argument, WP... if Brennan actually qualified his statements with "smoking gun" or "certitude"... but he hasn't qualified them.

What he has said is that there is no direct evidence of collusion. That would mean that there are no witness statements, documents, or anything else that would show collusion.

Considering that the term "collusion" itself is broad enough that probably 95% of what some might see as "collusion" would not even constitute criminal behavior...

What Brennan is telling you is that he has not seen any direct proof of an action that likely isn't criminal to begin with.

Yep, CH agrees the FBI's investigation is a total waste of time. CH once again swings and misses against the WP fastball. Your squirming is getting more amusing by the post. LOL

Majority Don’t Like GOP Health Care Plan

The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll finds that more Americans have an unfavorable view of the GOP health care plan than a favorable one, 55% to 31%.

For comparison, the Affordable Care Act has mostly favorable views, 49% to 29%.

OH DEAR. MORE TROUBLE IN TRUMPDOM.

The real crime is falling under the radar.

Was Obama administration illegal spying worse than Watergate?

In 1972, some employees of President Nixon’s re-election committee were caught when they broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters to plant a bug. This led to Nixon’s resignation and probably would have led to his felony prosecution had he not been pardoned by his successor, Gerald Ford.

But if a single bugging of the political opposition is enough to bring down a presidency — and maybe lead to an unprecedented criminal prosecution of a former president — then what are we to make of the recently unveiled Obama administration program of massively spying on political opponents in violation of clearly established law?

Because that’s what was unveiled last week.

It's Obama who may need a pardon from Trump.

Brennan said "no direct evidence", and James Clapper qualified with no "smoking gun" and no "certitude".

CH: "Would be a good argument, WP... if Brennan actually qualified his statements with "smoking gun" or "certitude"... but he hasn't qualified them."

So it's a good argument with respect to former director of national intelligence James Clapper. Both Brennan and Clapper, elaborating, explain that this doesn't mean denial that anything is there. Far from it, there is enough evidence that Clapper's “dashboard was lit up” and Brennan had seen enough to warrant an investigation.

It's the investigator's job to find "direct evidence", or "smoking gun", or "certitude" that the crime was committed. If and when they have that, you'll know because charges will be filed. Unless of course some Agency head or Justice official holds a press conference laying out the smoking gun evidence and declines to prosecute, but you'll know in that case also. Until then, "no smoking gun" doesn't tell you that nothing is there.

Clapper:

Clapper was also asked on "Meet the Press" if he had any evidence that the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russian government while the Kremlin was working to influence the election.

"Not to my knowledge," Clapper said, based on the information he had before his time in the position ended.

"We did not include anything in our report … that had any reflect of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians. There was no evidence of that included in our report," he said. "We had no evidence of such collusion."

But Russia!!! Trump!!!! Collusion!!!!

wphamilton said...

CH, he was quoting Clapper directly.

"I think so... I have to say, at the time I left, I did not see any smoking gun certitude evidence of collusion. But it certainly was appropriate for — given all the signs — certainly appropriate for the FBI — and necessary for the FBI to investigate," Clapper said.

This was in clarification of his previous statements, when he was asked directly to address precisely the argument you've made here.

Sounds like Clapper's opinion on the subject seems to be evolving...

wphamilton said...

Either evolving, or people were taking his original statement out of context to make an argument that Clapper did not intend.

The interviewer in fact asked something like this: Mr Clapper, many people are taking your statement to mean that there is nothing there, no evidence. Can you elaborate, is that what you meant?"

To which Clapper responded, no that's not what he meant and gave the above clarification. The sequence was an awful lot like what was going on in this thread.

Clapper also said he agreed that the FBI needed to investigate. Why does CH keep avoiding that part of Clappers statement???? Because there is nothing there/?????
