Gianforte slams Quist

So the final total looks to be between six and seven points. Obviously nobody knows for sure how the WWE beat down effected the race, but to the degree that it didn't actually swing the race to the Democrat (as many people speculated) just proves that partisanship is still ruling the day for most people.

Nate Silver and gang suggest that this particular margin provides the opportunity for a lot of different "takes" on what happen. In other words, there can be a legitimate argument made here for pretty much all points of view. It could easily be argued that this result proves that the Democrats are running ahead of normal expectations. Or it could be argued that even under circumstances that seem to be aligned by the gods that Democrats still come up short when it counts.

Moreover, there is at least as much evidence out there that suggests special elections mean very little as there is evidence that suggests special elections are always a indicator of how the next election will go.

What we know for sure is that the Democrats did not pick up this seat, and the chances of them picking it up in 2018 is next to nothing. Moreover, the Democrat once again "lost". One can sense that there is a growing frustration by many Democrats with the concept of "moral victories".  They would like a real one for a change. I would suspect that anything short of an outright win in Georgia 6  would be very damaging to the morale of the rank and file Democrat.

Is there anything Trump can say or do, that you'll start to feel embarrassed about? Or are you still cheering, "yeah, 35% tariff, trade war with our biggest allies, that's the ticket!"

He made the threat back in January before he was even sworn in, already trying to revive the US manufacturing job market that has lost millions of jobs to Mexico.

Having a president actually focus on jobs is not an embarrassment.

And I see the WAPO is dutifully spinning the GOP win in MT as another moral victory for dems.

I didn't hear him say that, but I disagree.

They're not smart people; a country that learned nothing from two world wars, but I wouldn't call them evil.

So, what we know...

Democrats can't win even when the main GOP player gets arrested the day before the election?

You would think they would figure this out by now. Unless there is a BIG change in how Democrats play in the public sandbox, they are losers.

Period.

REALITY CHECK
Democrats Gain Ground In Special Elections

Axios: “There have been three special elections in the Trump era, and although Democrats have yet to flip a seat, they’ve gained considerable ground in each compared to results in the general.”

“A similar situation unfolded in 2009 when three blue-state seats opened up following Obama’s win. The GOP gained ground in each of those special elections (without winning), foreshadowing the 2010 midterms when Republicans picked up 63 seats and took control of the House.”

Matthew Yglesias: “If Republicans are winning in places like Montana by just 7 percentage points, then they are in extreme peril of losing their House majority in November 2018.”

opie said...

This is what R's vote for......more cost per insurance than you ever imagined.

That improvement also comes at a remarkable cost: the savings to the deficit has gone down considerably from $337 billion in the first CBO review to $119 billion. That means that while the new bill is estimated to cover 1 million more people, it does so at the cost of $218,000 each.

Great job which will soon cause your party immense pain. Good.

GOP Turns Gloomy Over Obamacare Repeal

Politico: “A feeling of pessimism is settling over Senate Republicans as they head into a week-long Memorial Day recess with deeply uncertain prospects for their push to repeal Obamacare. Senators reported that they’ve made little progress on the party’s most intractable problems this week, such as how to scale back Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion and overall Medicaid spending.

“Republicans have started writing the very basics of their repeal legislation, even though they’ve made few decisions about what it will say. Staffers will work on the bill over the break to try to increase the pace of negotiations, as well as haggle with the Senate parliamentarian over whether the chamber can even consider the bill because of procedural reasons. But in the meantime, frustrations are rising and confidence is diminishing.”

22 additional deniers who think climate change is a joke and only money is important. Brilliance from Jowls McConnell and his band of idiots.

A group of 22 Republican senators signed a letter urging President Trump to make a “clean break” from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The letter, dated May 25, commends Trump for signing 14 executive orders to roll back regulations established under the Obama administration. It singles out the “Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth” order for beginning the process of dismantling former President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan regulations.

But the many high-profile Republican leaders — including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso and Oklahoma Sen. James M. Inhofe — argue that remaining in the Paris Agreement would interfere with rolling back the country’s “regulatory burdens.”

Once again, short term gains at generational disaster....Great legacy from the party of trump.

YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON TRUMP TO DO THIS SORT OF THING.
YESTERDAY HE TURNED HIS FIRST FOREIGN TRIP INTO A DISASTER

President Trump “punctured any illusions that he was on a fence-mending tour of Europe, declining to explicitly endorse NATO’s mutual defense pledge and lashing out at fellow members for what he called their ‘chronic underpayments’ to the alliance,” the New York Times reports.

“On a tense day when Mr. Trump brought the ‘America first’ themes of his presidential campaign to the very heart of Europe, he left European leaders visibly unsettled, with some openly lamenting divisions with the United States on trade, climate and the best way to confront Russia. The discord was palpable even in body language. When Mr. Trump greeted Emmanuel Macron, France’s new president, they grabbed each other’s hands, jaws clenched, in an extended grip that turned Mr. Trump’s knuckles white. When the leaders lined up to pose for the traditional photograph at NATO headquarters, Mr. Trump appeared to push aside the Montenegrin prime minister, Dusko Markovic, to get to his assigned place in the front.”

Former Russia ambassador Michael McFaul: “In Saudi Arabia, Trump promised no lectures. But at NATO, he lectured our allies at length.”

First Read: “Two days ago, you wouldn’t have been wrong to declare Trump’s overseas trip a relative success. But after yesterday — the ‘push aside,’ critical comments about Germany, no firm Article 5 embrace by Trump, and no formal position on Russia sanctions (!!!) — the trip became a disaster.”

I think it just proves how partisanship is ruling the political world right now.

It used to be "My country, right or wrong".
Now it's "My Party, right or wrong".

Most people are focused on how this effects the House. But I am going to argue that this bodes poorly for the Democrats in the Senate. Gianforte just lost a statewide race (for Governor) barely six months ago (by four points). Turns around and wins a statewide race for Congress (by six points) basically improving himself by double digits?

While many people will suggest it was a difference in the candidates he ran against... I might argue that it was a difference in the type of race. A governor runs the State and a conservative Democrat can work with a GOP congress. It's easy to see.

But according to some of the exit interviews, etc... the concern with putting a Democrat in the House (even a conservative one) is that he would automatically be thought of as caucusing with Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats. Too hard for some to swallow.

The same argument will be used against Tester in Montana. Being "conservative Democrat" in this partisan environment still associates him with Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Democrats in the Senate. If Partisanship remains this strong (and anti-Democratic Party feelings remain).... Tester could be in a heap of trouble, no matter how conservative he makes himself out to be.

But we disagreed on most important issue for the time. We met over a couple beers in the bar in the basement of the building occupied by several construction unions. He didn't win the support of the local unions, but he gained their respect

Once during the election campaign, he actually came to my residence in an attempt to chan. ge my mind. I was heavily involved in local politics.

All politics in Montana are local. And conservative.

It's true that the Democrats gained nothing by losing the election, and Republicans can justifiably feel relieved to hang onto this one. It doesn't really matter that Trump won there by 20 points, and that there should have been no real challenge from the Democrat. You have to win to change anything.

I thought that the assault could cost him, but evidently not. Maybe Montana Republicans like that sort of thing. Maybe if the "Liberal Journalist" had fought back the story would be different. But maybes aren't results and it's clear to me that the Democrats need a new playbook.

caliphate4vr said...

I thought that the assault could cost him, but evidently not. Maybe Montana Republicans like that sort of thing.

The ordeal had little effect on election night in Montana. A statement from the office of Montana's secretary of state said nearly 70% of the ballots were cast before Election Day. Gianforte gained a significant early lead over Quist. With nearly all precincts reporting, Gianforte had more than 50% of the vote, while Quist sat at just over 43%, according to results from Decision Desk HQ.

C.H. Truth said...

WP...

I just don't believe that a liberal journalist is going to get much sympathy from anyone that is not predisposed to see these sorts of people as heroes of the good cause (which is not many Americans at this point, and likely includes zero Trump voters).

I might even offer that a good portion of Americans probably believe that the Journalist had it coming.

I would also offer that there are a ton of people out there who will be skeptical of these sorts of situations, as it generally turns out that what is first reported is - at best - a variation of the truth.

Lastly, there a bunch of people who simply don't give a shit about it. Or more to the point, don't see the fact that this guy beats up a reporter to be something that should disqualify him to be a member of Congress. Perhaps, to some people, congress could use more people like this and less people who are always on media guard 24/7.

wphamilton said...

I doubt that a good portion of Americans thought that the reporter had it coming. Maybe a small portion, who didn't listen to the audio (or other evidence) and made up their minds based on the name-calling.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good portion of his constituents react favorably to the "tough guy" persona though. That's why I wonder whether there would have been a different outcome had the reporter fought back, rather than acting like a submissive victim. Candidate thrashed after attacking reporter, that might not have played as well with Montana Republicans.

Myballs said...

I will continue to push back that this should have been a slam dunk for the gop. MT currently has a dem gov and a dem senator. It's not as deep red as is being portrayed.

Commonsense said...

Hmm not exactly "had it coming" but I do think most Americans who tune in to the story thought Jacobs wasn't totally blameless either.

After all, he did barge into the office uninvited and shove a recorder in Gianforte's face.

Or to put it another way.

If Jacobs did the exact same thing to Barack Obama that he did to Gianforte how long do you think it would take the secret service to have him on the floor?

C.H. Truth said...

WP - I think you underestimate the amount of pure animosity there is for the media today, especially as it pertains to Trump voters.

More to the point, the whole situation was almost cliche.

- Reporter sneaking into a closed setting to confront politician.
- Demanding answers to his questions while shoving a microphone into the politician's face.
- Refusing to leave when asked to leave.

For some I am sure this constitutes good reporting. For many others it constitutes a reporter pushing his journalistic authority well beyond the limits of normal decorum.

A quick search of google provides extensive information on Gianforte's position on the new health care bill. He felt it should not have been voted on prior to having the CBO score it. He had issues with the way it dealt with pre-existing conditions. Ultimately Gianforte has said he would not have supported the new bill in the current form.

Apparently the Reporter did not do his due diligence... or his actions were an attempt to cause a scene and make it appear like Giantforte held a position that he didn't hold.

Which do you believe is more likely?

Trump Angled for Soviet Posting In the 1980s

“Donald Trump, in the mid-1980s, aggressively pursued an official government post to the USSR, according to a Nobel Peace Prize winner with whom Trump interacted at the time,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Said Bernard Lown: “He already had Russia mania in 1986, 31 years ago. He said to me, ‘I hear you met with Gorbachev, and you had a long interview with him, and you’re a doctor, so you have a good assessment of who he is.’ So I asked, ‘Why would you want to know?’ And he responded, ‘I intend to call my good friend Ronnie,’ meaning Reagan, ‘to make me a plenipotentiary ambassador for the United States with Gorbachev.'”

He added: “Those are the words he used. And he said he would go to Moscow and he’d sit down with Gorbachev, and then he took his thumb and he hit the desk and he said, ‘And within one hour the Cold War would be over!’ I sat there dumbfounded. ‘Who is this self-inflated individual? Is he sane or what?'”

Boehner: Trump has been a 'complete disaster'

“Everything else he’s done [in office] has been a complete disaster,” Boehner said during a question-and-answer session at a conference in Houston on Wednesday... The former GOP speaker, whose remarks were first reported by the energy-sector publication Rigzone, said he and Trump had been friends for 15 years and that the two had played golf together multiple times. Still, Boehner said he “never envisioned him” becoming president.

....The former speaker said the president “did what he could” on legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare, perhaps the president’s most prominent campaign promise, but added Trump should have instead sought to REPAIR his predecessor’s signature healthcare legislation.

YEP. WHAT I WAS SAYING ALL ALONG.

Talk of tax reform, another legislative priority for Trump and the Republican controlled Congress, is just “happy talk,” Boehner said. “I was a little more optimistic about it early in the year; now my odds are 60/40.”

Suppose further, those Americans who are not Trump supporters (I'm not sure why you brought Trump into this but let's roll with that) felt like he had it coming, didn't like GOP candidates anyway, and mostly didn't care that he got beat up. If you're afraid to answer my hypothetical question - and I wouldn't blame you, since there are no good answers - let me put this to you.

Although the witnesses confirmed that he grabbed the reporter's neck and threw him down, I half-suspect that there is some truth in part of the Montana Republican's story. Gianforte claims that the "snowflake Liberal" did a martial-arts slip-move and took them both to the ground. The hysterical pitch of Gianforte's voice during his panic screaming leads me to think, maybe he WAS overpowered by little reporter. Maybe the reporter is lying, and Gianforte was his patsy, making it just look like Gianforte was aggressive. It's not that hard, if the other guy is inferior enough physically, often the case for those who rely on bluster and bullying. Tech nerd millionaire, who looks like a guy who's all about image.

So what do you think CH? Did that scary Liberal overpower Gianforte and man-handle him to make it look like he was the aggressor? was his screaming outburst just panic and fear? This all kind follows if you believe his story. Do you believe him?

There is more than enough violence out there. Lot's of liberals in ski masks throwing rocks and burning things when something outrageous happens... like a gay conservative decides (gasp) to give a speech.

I guess in those regards... they would see someone like Milo or Ann Coulter wanting to speak in front of other people, to be the same sort of in your face problem... as a Reporter actually getting "in someone's face" literally.

So I guess to some degree... it's all a matter of perspective.

If it's perfectly acceptable for a bunch of liberals to hide behind ski masks and burn something down in response to someone wanting to talk about something they don't like...

Then by nature, I would find it hypocritical to be upset over a little pile driver or body slam when a reporter asks the wrong question at the wrong time to the wrong person.

But if you want the truth here... I find the concept of someone giving a speech that they were invited to give... to be less offensive than a reporter going where he isn't supposed, isn't wanted, and physically getting in someone's face (literally). I care a little more when the first person is attacked (or those around them) then I would be for the second example.

So it's not conservative or liberal for me... other than the obvious stereotype of this reporter who makes fun political fodder for being such a hipster cliche.

Commonsense said...

If a liberal reporter ever beat up a republican candidate we would never hear of it. They protect their own.

There's the answer to your hypothetical.

And you don't have to go too far to prove it.

Just look at the amount of violence perpetrated against conservatives speakers at universities, the incivil muggings of GOP townhalls by organized liberal agitators, and the assaults of Trump supporters attending rallies.

The liberal media barely bats an eye.

But when one obnoxious asshole breaks his glasses? Neverending outrage.

Jacob Schwartz, 29, was busted for allegedly keeping more than 3,000 disgusting images and 89 videos on a laptop after downloading the filth from the internet.

The illegal smut shows “young nude females between the approximate ages of 6 months and 16, engaging in sexual conduct… on an adult male,” court papers say.

Schwartz’s father — labor lawyer and Democratic insider Arthur Schwartz — called his son’s case “a personal tragedy.”

“I understand these are serious charges,” said the elder Schwartz, who watched his son get arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday night.

“He’s already in therapy for this.”

Jacob Schwartz surrendered to NYPD computer-crimes investigators in Manhattan’s 13th Precinct on Thursday morning, sources said.

He’d been under investigation since March 29, when he handed over his laptop and gave cops written permission to search it, court papers say.

Jacob Schwartz is the president of the Manhattan Young Democrats and the downstate region vice president of the New York State Young Democrats.

He was arrested on three counts of suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon that isn’t a firearm and assault causing great bodily injury.
In a statement Thursday, police acknowledged that video of the incident, captured by onlookers and posted on social media, helped them identify Clanton as the suspect behind “several violent assaults” that happened April 15 during the demonstration at Civic Center Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Police confirmed Clanton can be seen in videos hitting people in the head with a U-shaped bicycle lock. Three people received “significant injuries” because of the beatings, police said.

when the federal bureau of incompetence is on the case hilarity ensues:

Former FBI Director James Comey’s controversial decision to detail the FBI’s findings in the Hillary Clinton email case without Justice Department input was influenced by a dubious Russian document that the FBI now considers to be bad intelligence, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The secret document, which purported to be a piece of Russian intelligence, claimed that former Attorney General Loretta Lynch had privately assured someone in the Clinton campaign that the investigation into Clinton’s handling of classified information would go nowhere.

But according to people familiar with the matter, by August the FBI had come to believe the document was unreliable — and in fact may have been planted as a fake to confuse the FBI.

wp, i would say the reporter achieved his desired effect. today's msm has achieved a level of obnoxiousness when covering republicans that they almost seem to be in a competition amongst themselves to see who among them can be the most aggressive, impolite, and the biggest asshole. they take pride in the way they treat conservatives and republicans, complete with a sneering snarkiness.

what gianforte did was wrong by definition. but if you're honest you'll admit that the media has contributed greatly to the current poisonous atmosphere. and the fact that gianforte was able to raise $100K after the incident on the eve of the election should give you a sense of whose side the public is on.

when you intentionally go looking for trouble, you should not be surprised when you find it.

Breaking News: A Back Channel with the Kremlin by Kushner.

Jared Kushner and Russia’s ambassador to Washington discussed the possibility of setting up a secret and secure communications channel between Trump’s transition team and the Kremlin, using Russian diplomatic facilities in an apparent move to shield their pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, according to U.S. officials briefed on intelligence reports.

Ambassador Sergei Kislyak reported to his superiors in Moscow that Kushner, son-in-law and confidant to then-President-elect Trump, made the proposal during a meeting on Dec. 1 or 2 at Trump Tower, according to intercepts of Russian communications that were reviewed by U.S. officials. Kislyak said Kushner suggested using Russian diplomatic facilities in the United States for the communications.

The meeting also was attended by Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser.

The White House disclosed the fact of the meeting only in March, playing down its significance. But people familiar with the matter say the FBI now considers the encounter, as well as another meeting Kushner had with a Russian banker, to be of investigative interest.

Kislyak reportedly was taken aback by the suggestion of allowing an American to use Russian communications gear at its embassy or consulate — a proposal that would have carried security risks for Moscow as well as the Trump team.

Oh My God, I thought the Washington post was a big deal, but this one from Reuters is nuclear.

Exclusive: Trump son-in-law had undisclosed contacts with Russian envoy - sources

U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and close adviser, Jared Kushner, had at least three previously undisclosed contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States during and after the 2016 presidential campaign, seven current and former U.S. officials told Reuters.

Those contacts included two phone calls between April and November last year, two of the sources said. By early this year, Kushner had become a focus of the FBI investigation into whether there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, said two other sources - one current and one former law enforcement official.

Kushner initially had come to the attention of FBI investigators last year as they began scrutinizing former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s connections with Russian officials, the two sources said.

While the FBI is investigating Kushner’s contacts with Russia, he is not currently a target of that investigation, the current law enforcement official said.

David Frum has to remember this was like water gate, and he's no wild eyed lefty, he is a conservative.

He withheld this from the government, which from what I'm hearing it quite possible that this. He should be fired for his deception and may face charges. You have to wonder why they created this back channel, outside recognition of the government. He violated his oath.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race, has asked President Trump’s political organization to gather and produce all Russia-related documents, emails and phone records going back to his campaign’s launch in June 2015, according to two people briefed on the request.

The letter from the Senate arrived at Trump’s campaign committee last week and was addressed to the group’s treasurer. Since then, some former staffers have been notified and asked to cooperate, the people said. They were not authorized to speak publicly.

The demand follows a Senate request months earlier for the campaign committee to preserve documents.

Dozens of former staffers are expected to be contacted in the coming days to make sure they are aware of what they are required to produce and how to submit those documents, the people added.

The letter was signed by Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the Senate committee’s chairman, and Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), the committee’s ranking Democrat. Spokespeople for Burr and Warner declined to comment.

Analysis | Jared Kushner trying to secretly talk to the Russians is the biggest billow of smoke yet
The Washington Post

Manafort in Russian spotlight

The Washington Post's national security team just reported that during the transition, Jared Kushner proposed to the Russians that they set up a secret channel of communication using secure Russian facilities. That's what the Russian ambassador to the United States told Moscow about a December conversation he had with Trump's son-in-law and top adviser.
This is a damning piece of news for the White House caught under an avalanche of revelations about its dealings with Russia.

If it's true, it's the most difficult for them to explain in the context of an FBI investigation into Russia meddling in the U.S. election and whether Trump's campaign helped. Why would Trump's transition team need to secretly talk to the Russians, using their Russian channels?

Everything we've learned these past few weeks as it relates to the FBI's investigation into Russia is noteworthy, but it can be caveated with a reasonable explanation from the Trump White House. This news is much more difficult to caveat.

THE ARTICLE CONTINUES. OH HOW IT CONTINUES.

james said...

Secret back channels. Meeting with the Russians. Forgetting to disclose your meetings with the Russians. (Kushner is just one of several current and former Trump campaign officials who held meetings with the Russians, then forgot to share those meetings.)

If the Trump campaign did not work with Russia to try to influence the election, they certainly had a lot of interactions with the Russians that they didn't want the U.S. government and/or the public to know about.

Well before any of this was public, Team Trump's meetings with Russians raised eyebrows for former CIA director John Brennan, who told Congress recently:

"[B] the time I left office on January 20, I had unresolved questions in my mind as to whether or not the Russians had been successful in getting U.S. persons involved in the campaign or not to work on their behalf, again, either in a witting or unwitting fashion. And so, therefore, I felt as though the FBI investigation was certainly well-founded and needed to look into those issues."

Since then, revelations about the Trump campaign's relationship with Russia have made their interactions look more — not less — suspicious. That Kushner may have tried to establish secret communications with the Russians tops that list.

TAORMINA, Italy (Reuters) – Asked about reports that Donald Trump’s son-in-law had tried to set up a secret channel of communication with Russia before the president took office, U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said that so-called “back-channeling” was normal.

McMaster declined to speak specifically about the case of Jared Kushner, who serves as a senior adviser to Trump, but when asked if it would concern him if someone in the administration tried to set up a back channel with the Russian embassy or the Kremlin, he replied “no”.

“We have back-channel communications with any number of individual (countries). So generally speaking, about back-channel communications, what that allows you to do is communicate in a discreet manner,” McMaster said.

“So it doesn’t pre-expose you to any sort of content or any kind of conversation or anything. So we’re not concerned about it.”

So Kushner had secret meetings with the Russian Ambassador, and wanted to use the Russian Embassy secure communications equipment for ongoing secret communications. He failed to disclose these contacts (eg, lied). Kushner also held secret meetings with an official of the Russian bank.

Why indeed would Trump have a trusted family member conduct these meetings, rather than do it himself? What a question. A better question is, why does Kushner hold his position in the first place? Maybe not simply nepotism after all.

This doesn't look good for the Trump team. Especially after Trump declaring in no uncertain terms that neither he nor anyone he knows has had any contact with the Russians, period. Why did Trump lie about it? Legitimate contacts don't have to be hidden from Congress and our Intelligence services.

Have you heard of this study?

"Physically Weak Men More Likely To Be Socialists

An academic study from researchers at Brunel University London assessed 171 men, looking at their height, weight, overall physical strength and bicep circumference, along with their views on redistribution of wealth and income inequality. The study, published in the Evolution and Human Behavior journal, found that weaker men were more likely to favor socialist policies than stronger men."

😉 NOT surprised, LOL.

Lorretta, doesn't that really mean that big fat guys are less likely to be socialists? It sounds like a meta-study that failed to properly control for the variables.
