Liberalism in a nutshell

I read this piece from the Guardian today. From an author who is feeling just a little bit down about the progressive cause in Britain, and specifically the Labour Party. I always love the way people define themselves, and then turn around and show their own definition to be false.
Enlightenment values – tolerance, respect for the importance of fair debate, checked and balanced government, objectivity and impartiality, recognition of international interdependencies – are being trashed.
But the impact of a referendum that went against majority opinion in parliament, along with a desperately weak parliamentary opposition, a weaponised rightwing media and lack of mass support for the rule of law, has shown how vulnerable our civilisation is to know-nothing populism and a profoundly dysfunctional democracy.  (link)
So there you have it.  The values this particular progressive sees as important... tolerance, fair debate, checked and balanced government, and objectivity and impartiality... are somehow seen as vulnerable to know nothing populism and the dysfunction of democracy.  Damned Democracy!

How is it that tolerance, fair debate, a checked government, and objectivity can be threatened by popular opinion? Well, this happens whenever popular opinion goes against the will of the liberal elitists.
  • Then tolerance includes calling popular opinion "know-nothing".
  • Then fair debate is complaining about "right wing media".
  • Then a checked Government means parliament not following the will of the people.
  • Then objectivity includes name calling and hand wringing.

Isn't that the same thing here. Liberals lose elections and lose referendums and government control, and then run to the courts every five minutes to try to undercut the concept of Democracy and overthrow the will of the people? Liberals who demand that they are "tolerant" show us by shutting down speech they disagree with? Liberals see fair debate as the elimination of Brietbart and FOX News? They see objectivity as whatever it is that they believe is right and an objective source as those who agree with them?

I believe, however, that the Progressive Guardian author in this case shows his hand at the end.
Maybe Labour will be so broken that a new party, with roots in the best of the British working class and committed to Enlightenment values that unite the best of our political traditions, will have to be started with a clean slate.
So apparently the problems isn't that the self described values are being rejected. The problem according to the author is that they just need a new Party to take them up? Perhaps the better solution would be to actually "follow" the values you list... rather than just throwing them out there because they sound good, while actually practicing the opposite.

Because the "actual" progressive values of arrogance, condescension, self-pity, divisive identity politics, and entitlement are going to continue to be rejected by "populist popular opinion". Quite frankly, these values are rejected for very good cause.

Politico: “The stronger-than-expected victory of Macron is a stunning achievement for this novice to electoral politics, at 39 the youngest president in the history of France’s Fifth Republic. Any publication calling Macron a novice is stunningly ignorant of French politics or just stunningly ignorant period.

However Macron is protoge of one of the most unpopular presidents in French history so his victory is something.

Make no mistake Macron was elected because the French were more afraid of Le Pen then they despise Macron.

Nobody except the bureaucrats in Brussels are doing handstand about a Macron victory.

And then there is this group that has been enslaved to the US Government Federal Student Loans.

"Updated: April 6, 2017

It’s 2017 and Americans are more burdened by student loan debt than ever.

You’ve probably heard the statistics: Americans owe over $1.4 trillion in student loan debt, spread out among about 44 million borrowers. That’s about $620 billion more than the total U.S. credit card debt. In fact, the average Class of 2016 graduate has $37,172 in student loan debt, up six percent from last year."

Leading Europe and the world away from Trumpism, i. e., short sighted nationalism, break up of the EU, anti immigrant sentiment, racism.

James - none of the "Liberal" Mainstream Parties made the final two in France. The top two was a moderate Party that has been in existence for two elections, and the far right Party.

The fact that the moderate businessman beat the more extreme conservative candidate doesn't exactly make for a liberal victory. This is another example of Europe moving to the right... just not as fast as it otherwise might has.

Britain will not be the only country to leave the European Union. I think we can all count on that reality.

If you bothered to read the actual post and story with the post (rather than just try to change the subject with cut and pastes) you would understand that liberalism is in big trouble in Europe, for largely the same reasons it has been failing here in the United States.

The American or "Know Nothing Party" was an anti-immigrant political party of the 1850's.

Abraham Lincoln on populist anti-immigrant Know Nothingism:

LINCOLN: I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we begin by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes." When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty-to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

More than 100 veterans died while waiting for care at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., over a nine-month span ending in August 2015, according to a new government report.

Yeah that's gotta be it.... Idiot......She was drubbed by 30 points. I guess if the population was 64/34 men women, you might have a point. But the sad thing is the similarity to trumps approval ratings. At least in france they count all the votes where here, we selectively allow states with small populations to have an overly biased amount of clout which allowed the trump win. Oh well, can't fix our process now can we.

The dumbing down of America marches forward as instead of research, we will have opinion at the EPA, as the takeover to stupidity rushes forward...

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has chosen to replace half of the members on one of its key scientific review boards, the first step in a broader effort by Republicans to change the way the agency evaluates the scientific basis for its regulations.

The move could significantly change the makeup of the 18-member Board of Scientific Counselors, which advises EPA’s key scientific arm on whether the research it does has sufficient rigor and integrity. All of the members being dismissed were at the end of serving at least one three-year term, although these terms are often renewed instead of terminated.

EPA spokesman J.P. Freire said in an email that “no one has been fired or terminated,” and that Pruitt had simply decided to bring in fresh advisers. The agency informed the outside academics on Friday that their terms would not be renewed.

Obama Personally Warned Trump About Flynn

Former President Obama warned Donald Trump against hiring Mike Flynn as his national security adviser, three former Obama administration officials tell NBC News.
“The warning, which has not been previously reported, came less than 48 hours after the November election when the two sat down for a 90-minute conversation in the Oval Office.”

NO Economists Polled Agree with Trump

A new University of Chicago poll found that only two out of the 37 economists that responded said that President Trump’s proposed tax cuts “would stimulate the economy enough to cancel out the effect on total tax revenue.”

“[Even those two economists] now both say they made a mistake, and that they misunderstood the question.”

Just 31% Support the GOP Health Care Bill

A new HuffPost/YouGov survey finds that 31% of Americans favor the American Health Care Act, which narrowly passed the Republican-controlled House last week, while 44% oppose the bill and 25% are unsure.
Interestingly, Trump voters have now coalesced around the bill in a way they failed to do earlier this spring with 75% now supportive of the proposed legislation.

Trumpism is a psychotic disorder.

There are several variations of schizophrenia including paranoid, delusional, and combination. According to the study, Genome-Wide Association Study of Schizophrenia, it is an inherited disorder. If a family member has schizophrenia, there is approximately an 85 percent chance that a child will develop it. It also has a close familial tie, meaning those who get it are closely related to the family member who has it.

Parents who have it have a good chance of having children who do also. Through family studies, twin studies, and adoption studies, scientists have concluded that the risk of schizophrenia travels through family lines regardless of environment.

It is important to realize that genetic vulnerabilities do not necessarily mean inheritance. In the case of mental disorders, a parent does not necessary have to show symptoms for a child to have it. Many disorders are a combination of inherited genetics, mutation, and environmental influence. With so many variables, it is difficult to determine what is genetic and what is environmental. Scientists know there is a link between family genetics and mental illness but cannot pin down that link yet. This is why there is continuing research on both genetics and mental illness.

If you honestly apply the "Fake News" Presidential Disorder, to the President himself, and his supporters, it is tragic. Running from the truth for political reasons by the President, puts the nation at risk.

The testimony today, was that Mr Trump was warned by President Obama, that general Flyyn should not be appointed as the chairman of intelligence.
The President Tweet Trump elect tweeted before the testimony today, that the "Fake Media" will report the Trump campaign, will lie about how that General Flynn was already checked out by the Obama administration. The testimony today stated that the previous clearance was not sufficient for the appointment.

I'm going to bet that our esteemed host will support the President Tweet Putin..oops Trump. And that the Fake News is going to lie about the testimony today.

As I was typing this, he had Spicer to lie.
