Democrats wring hands...

The major consensus within the Democratic Party is that something has got to change, but they are just not exactly sure what it is that has to change.
“We have to figure out how we are going to speak to people’s economic anxiety. We’ve failed at doing that.”
“Democrats will not win back power merely by serving as an alternative to Trump and Republicans.”
We need a genuinely new message, a serious jobs plan that reaches all Americans, and a bigger tent not a smaller one. Focus on the future.
Part of the larger problem for Democrats is that the message that the lion's share of the Party believes is the "correct message" isn't a message that is resonating with voters outside of the core liberal constituencies.

It's difficult to go into the areas where Democrats have to win to take back the house (purple and red districts) and talk about abortion rights, global warming, amnesty, tax increases, while attacking police, churches, and telling everyone that Trump supporters are deplorable bigots.

So what you get is someone like Ossoff who tries to talk like a Republican, but has the burden of being represented by the ultra-liberal coastal Hollywood and San Francisco elitists. While he can talk about lowering taxes, fighting terrorism, and other Republican-lite issues, the problem is that everyone knows he is going to caucus with Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the liberals in Congress. If you want someone who is serious about those sorts of issues, then you vote for someone who is part of the Party that represents those issues.
"Close is only good in horse shoes. A loss is a loss...We can't just dismiss it. We need to review it together."
“We’ve been hyper-confused for the past five years. Some of the time we’re talking about economic growth, some of the time we’re talking about economic fairness.”
The reality here is that the Democrats are waking up to the fact that they are the minority Party right now, and for good reason. They have lost seats at every level, and put up a Presidential candidate in 2016 who couldn't defeat Donald Trump. This didn't happen in a vacuum. This wasn't a one election fluke. This has been slowly building, while being obscured by the mere existence of the Obama administration sitting at the top, making liberals feel like everything was fine.

It wasn't fine and it's not fine. It won't be fine  as long as the Party continues to play identity politics, shame politics, division politics, and remain the Party of hate. They cannot continue to try to "force" their ideas unto others and they cannot protest, riot, or sue their way into electoral success.

Democrats are definitely the minority party in the districts of these special elections. That stands to reason, since Trump isn't going to pick Democrats from Democratic districts for his cabinet. A reality check about that though, the Democrats are still the majority party among Americans. 48% to 44% in fact, for people who belong to or lean to the two parties. Granted winning or losing elections is the first priority to keeping a party in power, but the fact remains that most Americans prefer the Democrat side.

We've had a big swing to the right in elections the past few years, elected a lot of Republicans and a lot of them are Tea Party types. If I were a Republican I'd be happy about holding onto these seats, but I'd also be uneasy about the Republican brand. Is Trump really going to have coattails in less solid conservative areas, and if so is that really what you want?

As for the Democrats, they need to remember that all politics is local. There is no shortage of issues for them to latch onto. If a Republican wants to throw down as staunch supporter, the Democrat doesn't need to follow. They shouldn't feed into that narrative, because everyone already has their opinion about Trump, and congressional elections won't change it. They need to get back to issues that are important to their constituents, and pound them. No more of this national committee crap and their agendas. That's exactly how the Tea Party surge came about, and Democratic candidates need the same attitude of insurrection.

Anyone say Gerrymander???? Like floriduh which has something like a million more registered D's than R's, have both houses in solid R hands. The same thing can be said about US congress reps. Scotus has taken a case that may have profound effect on how districts are drawn. Watching the 6th congressional ads, one could not help but notice how Pelosi was demonized and attached to Ossoff. Never have been a fan of Nancy, but this race convinced me she needs to go away permanently. Who to replace, I vote for a fence post with D nailed on it would be better. Looking forward to the trump care reveal. If only a couple of R's came out and say they would hold their vote, maybe something good will come from the mess. But. my guess they will toe the line like good little boys and pass another POS!!!!

I think the real problem for Democrats is that the Senate and House doesn't care how many like minded people (and people relying on government aid) you can group in high density population areas to vote for you. You can win every liberal stronghold 99-1 and be a very minority party as Republicans win many more seats/states with 52-48 votes. It may even allow for you to continue winning plurality of votes in national elections while losing the presidency.

And I don't see anything changing ...

C.H. Truth said...

WP - the problem isn't in which Party the broad percentage of Americans identify with, but with how the breakdown of that support.

I know it's a cliche, but take away the one state of California and the significant majority of Americans would be conservative Republicans. 39 of the Democrat's House seats come from this state alone.

Further punctuating the problem is that more and more and more the Democratic Party is becoming a Party of urbanites and especially coastal urbanites. There are simply not enough congressional districts out there in those areas, which means that they have to win in places like Georgia 6 (which is an educated suburban area) because they are not going to win in the middle class suburbs and the rural areas.

The Democrats have chosen to try to expand their base by appealing to minority immigrants... and it hasn't worked out as they expected.

The Senate’s Unhealthy Start on Health Care

Rick Klein: “It’s a discussion draft that will leave much to discuss, and it’s unlikely to get prettier from here. The history of health care bills in Congress provides a clear lesson: process matters. On that count, the Senate’s health care effort is off to a distinctly unhealthy start, with members of the GOP’s conservative and moderate wings sounding similar only in their skepticism around a bill that’s been kept from even most of them until today. The secrecy has built anticipation and trepidation around the details, and now people will be able to judge the impact on their lives. Medicaid cuts, pre-existing conditions, abortion and Planned Parenthood; there’s enough cobbled together to convince senators that they’ll want to hear from constituents, or at least stakeholder groups, before taking votes that leadership insists need to happen before the Fourth of July.

“‘I’ve been talking about a plan with heart,’ President Trump said Wednesday night in Iowa, in another implicit dig at the House bill he once celebrated, adding that he told senators to ‘add some money to it.’ Nobody is against ‘heart.’ But the details are not even an easy sell at campaign-style rallies, much less congressional hearings and voter gatherings, with an effort that starts out as unpopular as this does.”

C.H. Truth said...

James - a week ago the polls had Ossoff winning by margins between seven and two points. He lost by four. Need I remind you that people like Quinnipiac came in with a final poll showing Clinton beating Trump by eight, and that within two weeks of the election there were still polls showing Clinton up by double digits.

So it's becoming increasingly clear that we need to take polling (especially early polling) with a big grain of salt.

Can you recall the last time it was where polling showed a Republican well ahead, and then it turned out that he or she lost? I think that would take some research to find the last poll that was horribly skewed for a Republican. I wonder why that is?

Wisconsin can have Chicago and begin calling it "South Milwaukee."

Naturally, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will fight this. He needs a job. And he'll most likely beg his friends at The New York Times and the Washington Post to write angry editorials to save him. And these will be full of concern for the republic and those dispossessed Midwestern salt-of-the-earth taxpaying Americans, as if.

Sadly, Wisconsin probably won't want Rahm, either. So to spare hurt feelings, I propose carving out 40 acres around the mayor's home so Rahm might be prince of his own country:

Rahmonia.

And Cook County Board President Toni "Taxwinkle" Preckwinkle will fight it, too, so she needs something to soothe her ambitions:

A grant of land as large as a case of the soda pop she taxes, so that she might stand on it and proclaim herself Queen of Taxwinkletopia.

If there are portions of Illinois that the other states don't want, they may be left as federal territory, a wilderness where only the strong survive and peasants and friendly propagandists kneel and beg for crumbs. You already know the name of this wasteland:

Madiganistan.

And in return for taking care of our politicians, Wisconsin will probably demand assets. Like the Milwaukee Cubs. The Beloit Blackhawks. The Sheboygan Bulls and the Fond du Lac Bears.

“His presentation on Thursday of the Senate’s health care measure to Republican colleagues — after the White House and key lobbyists got a peek the night before — was met with something other than unbridled enthusiasm. According to lawmakers who were at the unveiling, members from the left and right ends of the party’s spectrum were deeply critical of the effort.”

“As Democrats immediately took to the Senate floor to excoriate the bill and the secretive process in which it was put together, few Republicans, even those involved in crafting it, came to defend it.”

President Trump has a new morning ritual. Around 6:30 a.m. on many days — before all the network news shows have come on the air — he gets on the phone with a member of his outside legal team to chew over all things Russia,” the Washington Post reports.

“The calls — detailed by three senior White House officials — are part strategy consultation and part presidential venting session, during which Trump’s lawyers and public-relations gurus take turns reviewing the latest headlines with him. They also devise their plan for battling his avowed enemies: the special counsel leading the Russia investigation; the ‘fake news”’ media chronicling it; and, in some instances, the president’s own Justice Department overseeing the probe.

“By the time the president arrives for work in the Oval Office, the thinking goes, he will no longer be consumed by the Russia probe that he complains hangs over his presidency like a darkening cloud. Every leftist here save WP all suffer from this

In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias, wherein persons of low ability suffer from illusory superiority when they mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. The cognitive bias of illusory superiority derives from the metacognitive inability of low-ability persons to recognize their own ineptitude. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, low-ability people cannot objectively evaluate their actual competence or incompetence.[1]

As described by David Dunning and Justin Kruger, the cognitive bias of illusory superiority results from an internal illusion in people of low ability and from an external misperception in people of high ability; that is, "the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others."[1] Hence, the corollary to the Dunning–Kruger effect indicates that persons of high-ability tend to underestimate their relative competence, and erroneously presume that tasks that are easy for them to perform also are easy for other people to perform.[1]

That constitutes libel.

Go for it James. Providing you can actually find a lawyer who will go along with your charade, I'll be glad to take all of your money and leave you destitute for a malicious and frivolous lawsuit.

You're not only a bully. You're a cowardly bully at that.

Oh, "Commonsense," I will simply see if the ACLU finds it interesting,
that's all...

You, KD, and Chtruth -- your identities are known.

And somebody tell KD that I earlier made it clear that if I DO decide to write a letter to the ACLU, it will be an open letter that will be posted here for all to see as well as sent.

That's how I, good ole fair-minded Rev. James Boswell choose to operate.

LOL. Let your neighbors howl at this, Cowardly:

Health Care Isn’t Going Away as an Issue

First Read: “Either his bill passes quickly or it dies quickly: And politically, it appears that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sees quick action on the legislation accomplishing one of two things — either it passes quickly, or it dies quickly (to allow Republicans to move on to other matters). But if does pass and become law, remember that many of the provisions (like phasing out Medicaid) don’t happen for a while. And so it’s easy to see how Democrats, when they return to power, re-establish the Obamacare provisions — or even go full single-payer.

“Bottom line: We’re not sure the Senate bill, even if it passes, provides certainty to the health care system.”

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

And this...
Asked on Fox if the GOP's "Better Care Reconciliation Act" actually made health care better, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Ala), said,
"It depends on how you define better.”

And this...
Trump Loses Patience with His White House Counsel

“White House counsel Don McGahn has largely stepped back from managing Donald Trump’s response to the expanding Russia investigation, but that hasn’t stopped the president from lashing out at him about it anyway,” Politico reports.

“Trump started the week by giving McGahn, a loyal supporter who was among the first Washington establishment figures to sign on with his presidential campaign, a dressing down in the Oval Office for not doing more to squash the Russia probe early on.

“The episode — recounted by four people familiar with the conversation — came as part of a broader discussion on Monday about the president’s frustrations with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.”

Yeah, I'm shaking in my boots.

You go on and write that letter James. Make sure you share it with your congregation so they know just how much of a kook you are.

Trump has signed. After all, he said he had
accomplished SO much!

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Oh, CS, I don't discuss politics with my congregations.

I did once share with one of them some of Savageetta-Loretta's posts
claiming she had talked with their elders.

They got a HUGE kick out of that! LOL

Yeah, like I said, you have no guts.

They'll eventually find out what a fraud you are.

You can't hide forever.

More Americans Believe Comey Over Trump

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that by a 2-to-1 margin, 45% to 22%, Americans say they are more likely to believe former FBI Director James Comey than President Trump when it comes to their differing accounts of events that led up to Comey’s firing.

Also interesting: Just 50% of Republicans believe Trump.

LOL I was at the last church I served for 19 years and when I finally left it was because I had to absolutely insist that after some 900 plus sermons, it was time for them to experience someone else.

And I never hid from them that I was a Democrat and an Obama supporter, as were about half of them. :-)

LOL, Commonsense!
As I invited you repeatedly in the past, you can telephone
or write the church and ask them if I was fired.

But you will not, because you don't want to know the truth,
just like you don't want to know the truth about Trump.

You make it so easy.
It is hard to maintain a lie.
