After the full court press...

NPR/PBS Poll:

President's Trump's response (RV):
 - 51%  not strong enough
 - 31%  strong enough
 - 18%  have no opinion

Statues honoring Confederacy leaders (RV):
- 62%  remain as historical symbol
- 28%  be removed because they are offensive
- 10%  have no opinion

The Antifa and their beliefs (RV):
- 5%  mostly agree
- 24% mostly disagree
- 18%  have no opinion
- 50%  wonder who are the Antifa?

So after the media spent more time pummeling the President's response to the violence in Virginia than they spent actually discussing what happened... it would appear that there is a much smaller percentage of people aghast by the President than they likely suspected. While the media would have you believe that this has been he worst week in the history of any President who ever lived (CBS devoting their entire evening news on Tuesday to the cause), it turns out that only about half the country even took issue with what he stated. For, Trump... having only half the country disagree with him must feel like a win.

"So only half the country thinks I screwed this up? I can live with that."

Moreover, it would appear that the country agrees with the underlying cause of the protest, at least in terms of tearing down the statues. Less than a third of the country wants these statues removed (including only 6% of Republicans and 27% of Independents).  A majority believe that they should stay as a historical symbol. This seems to reinforce the eyewitness and video accounts (pretty much ignored by the media) that there were protesters there who were "not" white supremacists, and had reasons (other than racism) for wanting to protect the "historical symbols".

Oddly, NPR/PBS either didn't ask (or didn't report) whether or not the public felt the President was correct when he stated that multiple groups were responsible for the violence. But at the very least, we have pollsters and the media talking about the Antifascist movement, and it appears that they have significantly less of a following than our liberal media apparently thought.

However, not too surprisingly, the public doesn't know much about the Antifascist movement. I am guessing after the events of this past week, along with the "controversial statements" by the President calling attention to them... that this will not be the case moving forward. I suspect that more and more people will start to wonder and start to look into exactly who these people are. Which is at least one positive thing that came out of all of this.

POLITICS 8/16: Trump at Lowest Point With 35% Job Approval Rating… Crack at the Base
President Donald Trump’s job approval rating is at its lowest point since taking office with only 35% of Americans giving him a positive score.
Print Friendly
ByMarist PollPublished on August 16, 2017
President Donald Trump’s job approval rating is at its lowest point since taking office with only 35% of Americans giving him a positive score. 55% disapprove of the job he is doing which is his highest negative rating as president. Although still popular among his key constituency, notably, his job performance rating has dropped among strong Republicans from 91% in June to 79% now. In addition, by more than two to one, Americans who strongly disapprove of his job performance, 42%, outnumber those who strongly approve, 20%. In June, his overall approval rating stood at 37%, and 51% disapproved. At a similar time in President Obama’s tenure, 55% of registered voters approved of the job he was doing, and 35% disapproved.

“While Republicans are still largely in Trump’s corner, the cautionary tale for the president lies in the softening of support at his base,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “Since his numbers among Democrats and independents are weak, a crack among his most ardent supporters is something Trump can ill afford.”

More Americans also have a negative impression of the president. 60% of residents, including one in five Republicans, view Trump unfavorably, representing his most unpopular standing since assuming office. Only 34% have a favorable view of him. When this question was last reported in June, Trump’s negative score was 56%, and his positive rating was 37%.

WASHINGTON — Under fire for defending racist activist groups, President Trump said on Twitter on Thursday that he was “sad” to see United States’ history torn apart by the removal of “our beautiful statues and monuments,” echoing a popular refrain of white supremacist groups that oppose the removal of Confederate monuments.

Officials in several states have called for the removal of public monuments that have become symbols of the Confederacy.

The Twitter posts were the latest in his escalating remarks that critics contend validates white supremacist groups who led a bloody rally over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va. The proposed removal of a statute of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a public park in Charlottesville spurred the demonstrations.

Trump Opens Breach with CEOs, Military
AND WITH ANYONE DECENT

“President Trump found himself increasingly isolated in a racial crisis of his own making on Wednesday, abandoned by the nation’s top business executives, contradicted by military leaders and shunned by Republicans outraged by his defense of white nationalist protesters in Charlottesville,” the New York Times reports.

“The breach with the business community was the most striking. Titans of American industry and finance revolted against a man they had seen as one of their own, concluding Wednesday morning they could no longer serve on two of Mr. Trump’s advisory panels.

“Five armed services chiefs — of the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, the Marines and the National Guard Bureau — posted statements on social media condemning neo-Nazis and racism in uncompromising terms. They did not mention Mr. Trump by name, but their messages were a highly unusual counter to the commander in chief.”

GOP Lawmakers Are Apparently In Hiding

The Washington Post reports that Republicans want nothing to do with defending President Trump’s remarks on the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville.

“We invited every single Republican senator on this program tonight — all 52,” Chuck Todd said on MSNBC’s “MTP Daily” on Wednesday. “We asked roughly a dozen House Republicans, including a bunch of committee chairs, and we asked roughly a half dozen former Republican elected officials, and none of them agreed to discuss this issue with us today.”

That’s about 70 rejections altogether, and other news anchors had the same experience on Wednesday — even on Fox News.

“Our booking team — and they’re good — reached out to Republicans of all stripes across the country today,” Shepard Smith told his viewers. “Let’s be honest: Republicans often don’t really mind coming on Fox News Channel. We couldn’t get anyone to come and defend him here. Because we thought, in balance, someone should do that. We worked very hard at it throughout the day, and we were unsuccessful.”

Trump Defends Confederate Statues

President Trump doubled-down on Twitter and defended the “beautiful” Confederate statues:

Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You… can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also… the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!
---------------------

who’s next, Washington, Jefferson?

I'm a Southerner but I wasn't aware that Washington and Jefferson ever rebelled against our Constitution and our Union.

I, patriot James, quoting Bernstein, shook my head and said...

Has the Military Given Up on Trump?

Carl Bernstein on CNN: “I think there’s considerable evidence that there is a consensus developing in the military; at the highest levels in the intelligence community; among Republicans in Congress; including the leaders in the business community that President Trump is unfit to be the President of the United States.”

He added: “I’ve talked to some of the military leaders and what they are saying is extraordinary… They have given up on this president.”

Finally: “I think all reporters need to be checking their sources and finding out what people on the Hill and in the military and in the intelligence community are saying… about the stability and the mental condition of the president of the United States. This is something we haven’t dealt with before.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

I fully understand the historical importance of the Monuments. No one is telling me how to think about them. But (45) just tweeted that the removal of the statues "is foolish". I report you decide.

Personally I understood the historical importance, but they represent the worst and deadly conflict in the history of the United States. The war was in large part, the desire of the southern states, to continue the institution of slavery. The war ended 143 years ago. If I was in the place to make the decision I would not tear them down. But I completely understand especially in the African American population that it represents the worst part of American history and they need to think that they are now part of this country and are no longer a second-class citizen and feel horrible about the institution of slavery. It is time to move on according to those people and well it's their decision not mine. Number 45 is not telling me how to think neither is anybody else.

Steve Bannon, Unrepentant

White House adviser Stephen Bannon called Robert Kuttner at the American Prospect to discuss his article on China but apparently didn’t realize the entire conversation was on the record.
Among the highlights:

_______________
He admitted he was fighting with colleagues: “That’s a fight I fight every day here. We’re still fighting. There’s Treasury and Gary Cohn and Goldman Sachs lobbying… We gotta do this. The president’s default position is to do it, but the apparatus is going crazy. Don’t get me wrong. It’s like, every day.”

He undercut the president’s threats on North Korea: “There’s no military solution, forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.”

He explained his strategy towards race: “The Democrats, the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.”

On white nationalists: “Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers. It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more. These guys are a collection of clowns.”

____________
Jonathan Swan: “The piece gives Bannon’s enemies ammunition at a time he’s extraordinarily vulnerable. They’ve been saying he’s a leaker, a self-promoter, ‘President Bannon,’ etc. This interview plays right into their hands.”

It's a shame that Robert E Lee is vilified by the alt left media today. Is shows a total ignorance of history.

If it wasn't for Lee it would be highly doubtful we would have had the nation we have today.

Because on April 15, 1865, when everyone from Jefferson Davis down to his corp and division commanders said he should disband the Army of Northern Virginia into partisan groups and conduct a never-ending guerilla war, he decided to surrender the army instead.

He wanted the war to end and the nation to heal. His surrendered set the template for the later surrender of Joe Johnson's forces in North Carolina and all other Confederate forces.

The fact that the nation did not descend into never-ending civil strife was due the Lee's courageous decision.

And to ignoramuses like Roger who think Lee committed treason against the United States?

He committed "treason" against the United States because he couldn't commit treason against his native Virginia.

And that was the issue of the Civil War in a nutshell.

August 16, 2017 at 10:55 am

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has been publicly silent so far over President Trump’s latest remarks on Charlottesville, “is privately upset” with the president’s handling of the episode, CNN reports.

What he said publicly: “The white supremacist, KKK, and neo-nazi groups who brought hatred and violence to Charlottesville are now planning a rally in Lexington. Their messages of hate and bigotry are not welcome in Kentucky and should not be welcome anywhere in America. We can have no tolerance for an ideology of racial hatred. There are no good neo-nazis, and those who espouse their views are not supporters of American ideals and freedoms. We all have a responsibility to stand against hate and violence, wherever it raises its evil head.”

“McConnell, who has a long history of working on civil rights issues, is deeply concerned that Trump is reopening long-festering racial tensions, something that could fan the flames ahead of demonstrations expected in Lexington, Kentucky.”

STOP MIS-QUOTING AND MIS-REPRESENTING LINCOLN

On August 22, 1862, just a few weeks before signing the Proclamation and after he had already discussed a draft of it with his cabinet in July, he wrote a letter in response to an editorial by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune which had urged complete abolition.

Lincoln differentiates between "my view of official duty"—that is, what he can do in his official capacity as President—and his personal views. Officially he must save the Union above all else; personally he wanted to free all the slaves:

"I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be 'the Union as it was.' If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views.
"I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free."

I was going to offer to pay for CH'S new blog, around $500 bucks but I decided today how crazy it would be.

The drunkard would still spam.

The vindictive pedophile would still spam.

I used to donate all of the time, but it was a different place, interesting reading and good conversation.

No more, not since the drunkard turned the original blog into a trash blog.

And certainly not since the pedophile showed up to help the drunkard turn the original blog into a trash blog.

Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure which freed slaves in the ten states which seceded from the Union during the Civil War, thereby encouraging blacks to join the Union army in great numbers. Eight months after his assassination, the Thirteenth Amendment made all slavery illegal. Lincoln had placed slavery where he knew it must end, as he had already foreseen in his House Divided speech.

Oh, Cali almost forgot.

Along with some friends, we've set up a trust to help young people attend college. It's not based on income, but on the student's own desires to obtain a higher education.

We ask that the student apply with a letter to the board from the student, goals, etc.

It's a program to help middle to upper middle class families.

I'll send you the info.

Dear Roger,
We were horrified by the neo-Nazi demonstration that took place in Charlottesville, which resulted in the loss of life of a young woman as well as two Virginia State Troopers responding to the protest. There is simply no place for this type of bigotry, discrimination, and hate.

As the country braces for more white supremacist demonstrations, we wanted to let you know what we are doing for the Uber community:

We will act swiftly and decisively to uphold our Community Guidelines, including our policy against discrimination of any kind—this includes banning people from the app.
24/7 in-app support is available to answer questions and address concerns. You always have the right to end your trip if you feel uncomfortable or disrespected.
Now more than ever we must stand together against hatred and violence. Thank you for making our community one that we can all be proud of.

On behalf of all of us at Uber,
Meghan Verena Joyce

Another (45) hater. The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.
WASHINGTON — Sen. Bob Corker delivered his harshest criticism of President Trump yet, telling an audience in Chattanooga on Thursday that Trump has not demonstrated that he understands the character of the nation and has not shown the competence needed to lead.
"The president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability, nor some of the competence, that he needs to demonstrate in order for him to be successful — and our nation and our world needs for him to be successful, whether you are Republican or Democrat,” the Tennessee Republican said at a Rotary Club meeting in Chattanooga.
Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he fears the nation will be in peril unless Trump makes radical changes at the White House.
“He also recently has not demonstrated that he understands the character of this nation,” Corker told reporters following his luncheon address. “He has not demonstrated that he understands what has made this nation great and what it is today. And he’s got to demonstrate the characteristics of a president who understands that. Without the things I just mentioned happening, our nation is going to go through great peril.”

He will be blocked.

STOP MIS-QUOTING[sic] AND MIS-REPRESENTING[sic] LINCOLN

It wasn't a misquote or a misrepresentation of what Lincoln said and how he felt about the war.

His primary goal was to preserve the union not destroy slavery.

As you yourself proved by re-posting Lincoln letter to Horace Greeley.

I do find it amusing when you undermine your own argument.

Abraham Lincoln did not sign the Emancipation resolution until 1863 two years into the war. The original reason to stand up to the rebellion was not to stop slavery. I did not say that and you are distorting what I said as usual.

General Lee did not support slavery either. He found the institution disgusting but he's still fought the War. In fact he cost hundreds of thousands of lives because he was the best general of the the war.

He committed treason read the Constitution look it up it's not hard to find he committed treason and he should not be celebrated in public. Statues of him in a museum are fine.

I'm changing my mind on this because of all this crap. No, they should not be on the public. They represent the treason of the rebellion in the Civil War.

Wikipedia: The Emancipation Proclamation, or Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It changed the federal legal status of more than 3 million enslaved people in the designated areas of the South from slave to free. As soon as a slave escaped the control of the Confederate government, by running away or through advances of federal troops, the slave became legally free. Eventually it reached and liberated all of the designated slaves. It did not cover slaves in Union areas that were freed by state action (or by the 13th amendment in December 1865). It was issued as a war measure during the American Civil War, directed to all of the areas in rebellion and all segments of the executive branch (including the Army and Navy) of the United States.[2]

Got it?

Hours after a deadly terror attack in Barcelona, President Donald Trump suggested that Islamic terrorists should be executed with bullets soaked in pig’s blood, praising a discredited story of a 20th-century atrocity.

“Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught,” Trump tweeted Thursday afternoon. “There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!”

The tweet referenced a false story that Trump told at rallies more than once on the campaign trail. Trump claimed that during the Moro rebellion in the Philippines between 1901 and 1913, U.S. Gen. John Pershing executed Muslim insurgents with bullets dipped in pig’s blood. Trump’s retelling of the myth has changed each time

Time Magazine

But his false claims will continue every single day. He is incapable of saying the truth. The Senate Republicans right now, mostly below the surface with Senator Corker coming out they are very very very nervous about the president. It's not just political he could very well cost them control of both houses of Congress. But he can also institute a danger to the United States of America domestically and in foreign relations.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff individually issued statements that did not directly contradict the president of course because the commander and chief. But if you look at what they said they've contradicted and his claims in that deranged crazy press conference at the Trump Tower you can understand why they made their statements.

On the Democratic Party:
There is nobody else that I have seen emerge that may turn into the next leader we need not yet . I have a couple in mind I'm not gonna mention any names both of them are of minorities one is Hispanic and one is Asian . One is from Texas and one is in California you can probably figure out what I'm talking about if you look around . Pelosi and the others are wonderful people but their time has passed . I'm a member of the generation of baby boomer . We're fading fast I'm going to make a few more years no matter what is going on with my liver all that good stuff.

But the Democrats do have to get their stuff together and put together a coherent pro person pro workingman party policy and very carefully keep diversity part of it. But sometimes that bothers some people and we don't quite know how to handle that. Period. I don't either I'm not gonna say that I understand how to do that. But mainly we got to forward with a way to put the economy on a much more equal basis, and keep it progressing with increasing wages and benefits and universal medical care, that is the bottom line .

The top 1% is going to fight it every inch of the way . And the Donald Trump types will consistently use racism and white superiority to handle them discomfort felt by many with the changes in United States . His use of Birther Bs, succeed unfortunately .

Again, as usual you miss the whole point of the Civil war. To their mind Lee nor any other Confederate officer committed treason against the United States as defined by the constitution because they were no longer part of the United States.

These states succeeded from the Union and as citizens of these states it would have been treason against those states to levy war against it.

At the time (and to this day) there is no prohibition in the constitution against a state leaving the union.

It was Lincoln who said no. The union is one and inseparable forever and "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom".

1, cut small business taxes to 10 %
2, remove the death tax
3, return the choice of health insurance to the individual
4, eliMinato taxation on retirement withdrawls
5, rdeuce us Corp tax to 10 %
6,two year tax holiday on oversea money repatriated
7, double the personal exemption for all

Not one of these is race based.

QOTD:

"The Bill of Rights is an uncomfortable compromise. It says that we have to put up with people we don’t like. The Democrats, under the influence of the left, are rejecting that idea. But that goes both ways too.

You can have a liberal society or an illiberal one. But you can’t have a society that is selectively liberal when it comes to your bigotry, but illiberal of the bigotry of others, that believes you have the right to say anything you please without consequences, but that no one else does, that you can punch, but not be punched. That’s a totalitarian state. And the only way to realize it is through violence.

Democrats need to take an honest look at the street violence in Seattle, in Portland, in Berkeley and Charlottesville, and decide if this is what they really want. If they don’t, it’s time for them to stop normalizing left-wing extremism. If they do, then they are to blame for the next Dallas or Charlottesville."
