Question of the day?

Why are liberals so opposed to following the principals and laws drawn up in documents (like the constitution and bill of rights) written by influential founding fathers and early leaders of our country...

But apparently feel that our government policy has an obligation to remain consistent with sonnets written by 19th century poets?

and to answer the question posed in the original post of this thread, it's because liberals "feel" and conservatives "think."

liberals really, really want the lazarus poem to be our actual immigration policy. why, it shows great compassion. and liberals are really good at compassion. just ask them. so compassionate in fact that all any immigrant from anywhere on the planet has to drag their parasitic ass across our border, and liberals will shower them with all the free shit they could imagine.

Despite your best wishes I'm not in a coma. But again your president is out of his fucking mind he wants to get rid of the interest deduction for American home homeowners . Well it would help the rest wealthiest ones of course . That's the way in about Trump is and the way you love them even though none of your rich .

A tax break popular with homeowners and the real estate industry could take a hit as Republicans look for ways to pay for their tax reform plan. It will help pay for the tax cut for the top 1%. None of you are in that class, but Trump love will get you support.

Despite promises from the Trump administration in April that it would “protect the homeownership … deductions,” multiple sources tracking tax reform said that the cap on the mortgage interest deduction — currently set at the interest on up to $1 million of mortgage debt — could be lowered in tax reform.

That would be a slap in the face to an industry that strongly supported President Donald Trump during his presidential bid: He overwhelmingly won a straw poll by the National Association of Realtors during its annual meeting last year.

The topic came up during a White House roundtable with real estate industry representatives on Monday. National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, a key decision-maker on tax reform, and his lead deputy on tax reform, Shahira Knight, led the meeting. Cohn previously told members of Congress that almost everything, including changes to the mortgage interest deduction, would be on the table.

“They’re willing to ruffle some feathers,” said one attendee of Monday’s meeting. “Everything was on the table,” including capping the deduction that the Trump administration has said it would preserve.

No final decision has been made yet, as Republicans work during Washington’s sleepy days of August to craft a reform plan that would be politically palatable and meet the criteria for the budgetary maneuver they plan to use to bypass Democrats who could hold up a bill in the Senate. But lowering the cap on the mortgage interest deduction would help offset tax cuts for individuals and businesses.

KD, That was fun for me said...

The Trump administration is trying to figure out how to pay for tax cuts, and one of the ways it’s considering is getting rid of the mortgage-interest deduction for homeowners, Politico reports.

Unlike rent payments, the interest for a mortgage payment can be deducted from taxable income. It’s a major benefit of owning a home, and critics have pointed to it as a huge driver in American inequality.

At a White House roundtable, led by National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, featuring people in the real estate industry, the topic came up. One attendee told Politico that the tax break was “on the table,” as the administration works on taxes, something Cohn had told Congress before.

As Matthew Desmond, author of “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” wrote in May, it’s actually one of the main entitlement programs in the United States. “But by any fair standard,” Desmond wrote in the New York Times, “the holy trinity of United States social policy should also include the mortgage-interest deduction — an enormous benefit that has also become politically untouchable.”

Many countries like Australia, Canada, and Britain don’t have this deduction, which is ostensibly there to increase homeownership. Economists don’t think this necessarily works, however, instead simply allowing for the purchase of larger houses and benefiting the wealthy. According to the Tax Policy Center, it’s a very regressive policy, disproportionately helping boost the top 20% post-tax income.

Trump is willing to at least consider touching a politically untouchable issue

This isn’t the first time Trump has expressed a willingness to get rid of this favoritism to homeowners over renters. In April, the administration released its tax proposal, and while it indicated that it would “protect the homeownership and charitable gift tax deductions,” the proposal sought to double the standard deduction, which would effectively mute the mortgage deduction benefit for many American homeowners—except the wealthiest.

For this reason, Trump getting rid of the mortgage-interest deduction would effectively be the more populist position in comparison to the April “backdoor” version that protects it politically while rendering it useless to most people.

Despite being one of the most expensive tax breaks, costing the country—mostly the renters, who don’t get the benefit—$77 billion in 2016, Trump and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will face massive blowback should they pursue this policy. And not just from homeowners—from renters too. After all, homeownership is consistently cited as a being a part of the American Dream, a dream many renters hope to realize someday."

This is the entire Piece the link alky posted takes one to that is willing to cut n paste the link and do the google search.

ALky, how come your link does not include so much of what you posted ?

Roger - There is a "cap" on how much mortgage interest you can deduct. In other words, the mortgage interest cap is designed as a progressive tax so that high income people who own large expensive houses do not get to deduct "all" of their interest on their tax returns.

Right now, the limit is set to 1 million dollars (as your quote points out). In other words, if you can only deduct interest on a mortgage up to 1 million dollars. Over that amount, you can no longer deduct your interest.

That is what is they are looking at changing.

So why would you take issue with that cap being reduced to say... 900K, 800K, or even 700K. How many people is this going to affect and how many people who own houses in the 700K range, would you call middle class?

When we are talking about removing the caps for social security taxes, you seem to believe the opposite. That people in that income bracket (those who would own 750K houses) are capable of absorbing some more taxes?

It won't impact us, but millions of upper middle income families Wil face a tax increase.

It would hypothetically effect those with mortgages over... something like 800K (four times the median house price) and you have an issue with this... because ?????

These are people who have mortgages that would start in the $4000/month range.

By lending guidelines that means that they have an income in the $200K/year (after taxes) just to qualify. And it really only effects those who have more than a million, because they "CAN" deduct the first million.

Reality is that I know many one or two people with million dollar mortgages.

Start with the fact that only about 2/3 of Americans even own homes, and then consider what percentage of homeowners are in that million dollar mortgage bracket... and you are probably looking at the top 5% or higher.

I am supposed to believe that you feel bad for those million dollar home owners.... because they might lose part of a deduction?

And you are "really" suggesting that it's "me" who is not paying attention to any of this?

49000 professional and business services jobs. So piss off you stupidass.

C.H. Truth said...

Roger- this isn't a place where the statistics are subjective.

The median price of a house is $168K. A million dollar house is nearly six times that. Not to mention we are talking "mortgage" value, not house values... so you are generally looking at a house in the 1.25 million dollar range to hit 1 million in your mortgage.

A third of Americans do not live in a home they own.
Another third live in houses that are "under" 168K.

In your state (which has the most million dollar homes of any state), approximately 6% are worth a million dollars or more... so 6% of the 66% who actually own homes is just under 4%.

So in California, this tax currently hits the top 4% of your citizens. I would guess that the numbers are much smaller in places where real estate is less expensive.

I paid under $200K for a four bedroom, two bath house, with an over-sized heated garage (ex-mechanic did shop work there)... a fenced yard, a shed with siding and roofing... in a decent neighborhood with ponds and walking paths, and a park, etc. For $400K I could build more than I would ever need.

_____

So Roger... why don't you just admit what we all know. You were not paying attention when you cited your story, and simply didn't understand that lowering the "cap" is not the same thing as eliminating the mortgage deduction for low and middle income families...

Yep, I was thinking it was not possible, so having a $ 3000 K mortgage with insurance , taxes and PMI on his $100,000 a year gross is madness, putting $36,000 into payments a year, and that is net money.

$100,000 gross income - 35% tax rate (Federal and State) and now that gross drops to a staggeringly low $65,000 post tax, now we need to take away $36,000 for current mortgage(PMI taxes/Ins) and now Mrs 6 figures is operating on 29,000 a year, but wait, he has posted that he pays $4,400 a year in co-pays because of his on going kidney problems plus premiums of 3,600 a year to Kaiser Permanente Senior Advantage.

The former Mexican president is an outspoken critic of Mr Trump. One of his most strongly worded comments regarded Mexico paying for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Former Mexican president: 'I'm not paying for Trump's f****ing wall
"You can use my words. We will never pay for that f****** wall," he told CNN.

"Who can think about a country paying for a wall that is going to be built in the neighbour's territory? Or why should Mexico pay for a wall? What's the reason?" he continued. "We don't need a wall."

Fox also uses his Twitter account to attack the US president’s ratings. Mr Trump’s popularity is at an all-time low. A recent poll from Quinnipiac University found that only 33 per cent of American voters approve of his performance in office, while 61 per cent were against him. This marks his lowest approval and highest disapproval number since elected.

Paul, I'm happy for you and your family. We have both done o.k.. My daughter didn't get the degree, but that was her call. But she is very happily married and mother to one and another due next month. By marriage I'm a grandfather of 13 next month. If you friend me on Facebook, you can see my lovely wife Lydia and the new, skinny Roger. Along with others in the family. I have lost 110 lbs. You will be quite surprised at how I look after just two months after the liver transplant. Which is 100% successful. The UCLA transplant doctor said that there is no rejection, and the other possible problems, like kidney problems, are in full remission. rrb is sad.:-) :-) :-)

You can also look at my profile. The picture was taken on her birthday, the same day as the last real President, Barack Hussein Obama.

Roger I'm a bit terse right now. I went to see my mom today in assisted living and she claimed I put her in a kill shelter. All my yid friends have said that's better than any of their Jewish mom's could do.

Thank g-d they listened to me in 99 when I told them to get a long term care policy.

I'm angry right now and it doesn't have anything to do with, anyone we know.

Your Kansas obsession on my life is truly frightening.

But I'm over six feet tall, and a very good shape 180 lbs ass kicker.

In four months, I will be fully recovered and laughing at your pathetic attempts to hurt me.

Isn't a 24lb Shitzu kind of big for a Shitzu? Cute furry babies.

Awwwww! It could be worse (not your mom part, the dogs part.) You could be traveling across the country in a travel home with two six months old Doberman puppies and a Siamese cat, towing my Navigator.

Can't believe I agreed to this, lol.

Yes a 24lb shitzu is huge and cowering at my feet during a thunderstorm.

A 15lb chihuahua is even bigger. It resembles a stuffed sausage

Just as I suspected. There are lies, dayum lies and KD bullsquirt......A little bit of thinking, a little research and what do you get....KD full of it again... He equated costs for numbers of enrollment. When you think about that, it seems logical the the elderly are much more costly than kids which would skew the total costs without the numbers. As it turns out, there are 74.5 million medicaid enrollees and 35.7 million are children....or 50%. That 50% of the total, does not include elderly!!!!!!! IOW's children and elderly are the major recipients of medicare. Sorry, KD, your apology is long overdue and there is no spin for this like you absconding other costs, which you have no idea what they represent, to prove your lie. Again, thanx for playing.....Idiot...

Who is nickleback....a relative of yours???? Idiot.

BTW.....I own my florida house and have a small 15 year mortgage on my Ga homestead... Paid for my kids education with cash. Have 2 pensions that also cover my supplemental insurance, and SS, . Also, have 3 very healthy 401'k s that all I draw is interest and dividends since I retired. And you are still paying a mortgage and education. Yeah I want to be just like you, live in a condo and try to save for retirement....LOLOLOL And yes, I can sympathize with you on your mom....I had that with my MIL who swore that her daughter was trying to kill her....a real joy.
