The Irony of the NY Times

One of the tools in the media propaganda arsenal is the ability to spin new definitions of words in order to help manipulate their flocking masses. The NYT has a wonderful example of such an attempt in the opinion piece today entitled The Past Week Proves That Trump Is Destroying Our Democracy.

The official definition of Democracy is something along these lines:
a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
So by the very definition of Democracy...  the "destruction" would lie in a situation where the supreme power is "no longer" vested in the people and "no longer" exercised directly by elected agents.  In other words, the very concept that our duly elected President can actually undermine democracy runs counter to the actual definition of democracy. By definition the "supreme power" is vested in the President and other elected leaders. Period.

But the NYT argument is that Trump is "undermining Democracy" because he is apparently exercising too much authority over those who he has chosen (and appointed) to work for him, as well as fighting back against the unelected swarms of the deep state. Again, Democracy demands that those who are "elected" should be provided more power than those who are simply appointed or otherwise are life long government employees. Donald Trump can be voted out of office in 2020. The deep state cannot be.

Moreover, the real threat to Democracy in 2017 is not Donald Trump, but rather the "resistance". Those who have decided to undermine our duly elected at every turn are not representing Democracy, but rather fighting against it. There is no question that the media (led by the NYT) are spearheading that effort. If anyone is threatening Democracy (on purpose) its the NYT.

The reality here seems to be that the political class, deep state, and media simply do not like the fact that our Democracy elected an outsider, who doesn't follow the normal protocols of political expectations. Of course, that is "exactly" the reason he was elected, and therefor the general concept of Democracy should allow for the outsider to behave as such. Otherwise, you are simply not respecting that the supreme power is vested in the people, and exercised directly by their elected agents.

Sorry NYT, but in Democracy the supreme power is not vested in the political class, the deep state, and the media. Democracy should not start with an elected leader under attack (and under investigation) by deep state bureaucrats who have a political grudge against him.

If you truly stood behind Democracy, and want to see it thrive... then you should be rooting for Trump to succeed, and rooting against any attempts from "the resistance" to bring a duly elected President down.

i'm old enough to remember when a line like this would most certainly apply to "captain pen and phone:"

"The temptation to delay opposing Mr. Trump until the right moment comes along is understandable. It’s also very dangerous. Even if congressional Republicans abdicate their duty, the Constitution may turn out to be unusually resilient. But the only sure way to save the Republic is for them to start standing up to the president’s authoritarian behavior — not next week, or next month, but today."

during the waning years of the 0linsky regime, not only did congressional democrats abdicate their duty, effectively denouncing the constitution, they did so proudly while encouraging others within their ranks to do the same.

The support this President gave to the bill to lower legal immigration has the left throwing a hissy fit, they know so little about US Immigration History it would be funny IF IT was not so SAD.

When they report about this kind of stuff you say it's fake news just like Donald Trump tells you to think and off you go again. And you say I'm on medications no I'm not but something is wrong with you cuz you're not even seeing anything near the truth the Free Press is a reason we have a free Nation not because of president who is impulsive and irresponsible. You nailed it. CH hates the free press. Because they dare criticize his hero. He chastise me yesterday and again the same thing today Trump is God and the media is the devil.

And 2.6% growth is to them outstanding. President Obama had I think is 14 periods during a quarters during his presidency above 2.6% but that was never enough. Now Donald the faultless one has one to 2.6% and that's all my goodness it's perfect.

But you know the bottom line is criticizing Donald Trump is not is never fair is never ever fair to our host ever. He ignores the document in repeated lies and never never never mentions them ever. It's easily documented on a hundred issues.

The Boy Scouts for one. They called me and said that was the best speech ever in history of the Boy Scouts. The chairman of the Boy Scouts wrote clearly a letter and they never spoke about it there's never a letter on it either but the president insisted it was true.

I called Mexico. It did not happen.

Let's go back a few years how about the birth of b*******. That is delusional. But that doesn't bother the host.

Multiple lies that are documented not only in the evil liberal media but even now in the conservative media. And look at what the current the congressman and senators are saying about him, because they scared to death of the idiot.

But address any reality it is not the forte anymore of this place. I think he's looking for a job as the public relations post.

You didn't actually mean this did you, the way it's written??

If the President, or any other man, diminishes the "supreme power" vested in the people, then he is undermining democracy. His exercise of power, as a representative of the people, may either strengthen or weaken our democracy.

I would say at the very least, the consistent of incompetence from this administration is damaging to the institution of the Presidency, and that in turn causes lasting damage to our representative democracy.

C.H. Truth said...

WP...

Let's be fair and honest here.

Your argument (if you read between the lines) is that because "you" never supported Trump, didn't vote for Trump, don't currently support Trump, think Trump is failing as a President, and probably are part of those who believe he is "crazy"...

That such a thing is bad for Democracy because it highlights the fact that the voting public is capable of making mistakes.

However, there is no promise that Democracy is always the perfect solution to running a Government. It's extremely likely that neither of our last two Presidents (Trump or Obama) would have gotten past the cursory interview process if we actually chose a President in the same ways we chose private industry leadership. We would probably always go with people who have Governor experience or possibly high level military leadership. A former community organizer who was a one term Senator, or a real estate tycoon and reality television star would probably not fit the bill.

But even when the public choose someone like Richard Nixon or Jimmy Carter or whoever else was considered a failure, Democracy moved forward because we have the means to replace them fairly quickly (in the grand scheme of relativity).

The dangers to our Democracy does not lie with our elected leaders (their success or failure is technically irrelevant to that - especially considering most of that is subjective).

The danger comes from the political class and lifelong D.C. players who expect to have probably more control and power than they should. These are not elected people. They do not represent Democracy... and when they specifically go after our elected leaders and attempt to undercut their authority and their ability to perform their duties... all because they believe that "Democracy" got it wrong.

Then I would hope you would understand (Donald Trump aside) why this is a problem?

HE LIED ABOUT THE BOY SCOUTS. HE LIED ABOUT A CALL WITH THE PRESIDENT OF MEXICO.

Trump Admitted Mexico Would Not Pay for Border Wall
August 3, 2017 at 9:38 am

“President Trump made building a wall along the southern U.S. border and forcing Mexico to pay for it core pledges of his campaign. But in his first White House call with Mexico’s president, Trump described his vow to charge Mexico as a growing political problem, pressuring the Mexican leader to stop saying publicly that his government would never pay,” the Washington Post reports.

According to a transcript, Trump “made clear that he realized the funding would have to come from other sources but threatened to cut off contact if Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto continued to make defiant statements.”

Said Trump: “Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important to talk about.”

He said the funding “will work out in the formula somehow,” adding later that “it will come out in the wash, and that is okay.” But “if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that.”

CH's rebuttal is quite correct. The danger to Democracy is not with Trump, Obama, or any other elected official.

It is with the unelected bureaucrats and members of the political class who actively work to undermine their constitutional authority because they don't like the results of an election.

This incestious class no longer listens to the people out in the country. That is why a man like Trump gets elected.

Actually, I am reacting to your notion that Trump could not possibly be damaging to our Democracy, which you believe because he was elected and therefore exercises the power. No reading between the lines is necessary - that's exactly what you wrote.

I present you with TWO ways in which Trump may damage our democracy. ONE of them is by degrading the "supreme power of the people" that you cited in your definition. ANOTHER, completely distinct way, is through sheer incompetence.

Does that clear it up?

wphamilton said...

The dangers to our Democracy does not lie with our elected leaders (their success or failure is technically irrelevant to that - especially considering most of that is subjective).

I suppose you might have said that regarding Putin after his election to his second term in Russia. Or regarding Rodrigo Duterte in Philippines.

Your claim here is obviously false on the face of it. Any leader of any Democracy has the potential of being a danger to that democracy. One like Trump, who seems to have little consideration for ethical behavior, and perhaps little or no knowledge of the workings of democracy in general nor of our government in particular, is a greater potential danger than most.

Commonsense said...

May? How does the person elected degrade the power under which he was elected?

He is not empowered to become president in his own right. That "supreme power" is reserved to the people.

The only way that power can be degraded is by conspirators trying to remove or degrade the president in contradiction to the will of the people and the law.

And certainly a president is free to be as incompetent as any other elected official. It is the people's supreme power to either re-elect him or remove him once his term of office expires.

wphamilton said...

You can destroy or suspend the institutions of government, for one. It would be easy if you're politically powerful enough, or too stupid to be afraid of the consequences.

Do you understand what is going on in Philippines? Have you been awake through the events in Venezuela, from Chavez to Maduro? If so, how can you question that it's possible?

C.H. Truth said...

ONE of them is by degrading the "supreme power of the people" that you cited in your definition. ANOTHER, completely distinct way, is through sheer incompetence.

I am not sure that you are offering much of a difference between the two. They sound like the same thing, only slightly different descriptions.

I would argue that even Richard Nixon (who resigned in shame) did not degrade or otherwise harm democracy... only degraded himself. In fact, Democracy did not change one iota after he left office. We continued to have elections every two year to elect a new congress and every four years to elect a new President.

As far as the "office of the Presidency" - I might offer that it's at least as dangerous to have your deep state, your political class, and your media treat the President with a lack of respect that the office generally requires... as it is for the President to behave in a manner that some might argue is not "Presidential".

After all... Trump was elected while behaving pretty much exactly as he is behaving as President. So the "people" are actually getting "exactly" what the "people" voted for. In fact, it's actually a trait that many of our previous Presidents didn't follow through with. Our previous President campaigned on being more bi-partisan and more inclusive than McCain (who has a fairly significant history of being bi-partisan) and ended up being arguably the most partisan and noninclusive President in modern times.

More over, the so called "resistance" is actually a specific design to "undo" the election results and make sure that the person who was elected is unable to do his job... and to do so by any means... other than (apparently) winning back the House or the Senate (which are the only real legitimate ways to change political course in democracy). It shouldn't be up to Judges to flaunt the rule of law to rule against his policies (out of spite) or up to deep state employees to under mine or under cut his Presidency.

If you want to stop him, you do what the GOP did in 2010 and win back congress.

The reality is that if you want to argue that a "bad President" somehow harms Democracy, then it really boils down to completely subjective opinion as to what constitutes good and bad... and ultimately that subjective opinion will end up carrying the day on that first Tuesday in November.

C.H. Truth said...

Do you understand what is going on in Philippines? Have you been awake through the events in Venezuela, from Chavez to Maduro? If so, how can you question that it's possible?

Really besides the point. Certainly if Trump planned a military coup to declare himself dictator and suspend all elections in the future... well then, that would be a pretty significant manner of harming Democracy.

It could be argued that our Previous administration apparently using the executive branch powers to undercut the Trump campaign on numerous fronts was a means of keeping the same Party in power... and could be definitely argued to be a threat to our Democracy.

But what was being argued by the NYT wasn't that Trump was going to suspend elections or front a military coup... but that just the actions of confronting the deep state, criticizing the media, wielding a heavy hand with his appointees, and supporting policy (that liberals don't like) is what they consider a threat to Democracy... as if Democracy is really represented by lifelong Washington insiders, the Political class, and the liberal establishment media, rather than represented by elected leaders.

A President doesn't have to yield to opposition, and this President doesn't have an obligation to yield to the "resistance" as a means to perverse democracy.
