What changed: Part 1

For the past 200 plus years the United States has operated under the concept of many freedoms, but perhaps the most genuinely endeared freedom of all has been freedom of speech. Not just freedom of speech we agree with, but specifically freedom of speech that we disagree with.

Over the past several decades there may be no greater example of "disagreeable free speech" than what has come from the various White Supremacist Groups, such as the Nazi Party and the KKK. They have routinely held rallies, marches, protests, and generally attempt to do so under circumstances that draw the most attention to their cause. These events have traditionally been met with either some chorus of boos and cat-calls or to an obvious sense of indifference and disinterest.

Ironically, while there is no question that many of these groups have been responsible for more than their own fair share of criminal violence, these assemblies and marches were generally peaceful (or at least they have been up until fairly recently). There was no prevalence of burning of local businesses, looting, or spontaneous assaults on the police.

The reality here is that White Supremacy is a concept that likely upwards of 99% (if not 99.9%) of Americans disagree with. But this disagreement has not led us in the past to believe that White Supremacists should be forced to forfeit their right to free assembly and free speech. We historically continued to allow such assembly, and one might even argue that much like the concept of "burning the flag" has become a symbol of free speech, the visual of KKK members walking down the street carrying signs is an equally powerful symbol of the absolute nature of our First Amendment.

But in 2017 many people seem to be turning their back on this tradition. The new political attitude being displayed today seems to be that these white supremacists should not have the right to even assemble. The argument seems to be (according to those like Governor Terry McAuliffe) that because the content of the speech in question is offensive, that these assemblies promoting this speech are un-American.

My question is simple. What changed?

The left has infected public education all the way from kindergarten to college.

Therefore we have reared a generation that does not value American exceptionalism or the freedoms pass generations of Americans fought and died for.

A generation that yearns for safe spaces and is intolerant of anyone or anything that is in contrast to the worldview their teachers indoctrinated in them.

This is the generation that is now taking the reigns of power in America.

That's what's changed.

I don't believe condemning the the white supremacist movement is anti-free speech.

It works both ways and yes they have a right to protest but they're going to face issues because of the hatred of their attitudes and her statements you know with him and say this anti-Jewish anti-somatic anti-black and unfortunately awful damn to the alt right moment.

Every president has been critical of the Free Press at different times but this is the first one said that everything is the fake news . If it disagrees with the president it is false and fake news that is the first time I can remember anything like that. I don't think you can either not that. Not that you're much younger than I am.

The Free Press is in First Amendment for reason. This controversial unlike by most political figures and groups . The Federalist papers address that I have to look it up . You know what I'm talking about I'm not sure who made the statements. Jefferson because he is very smart to say the least?

The new tactic is suing the journalist or their employer. I saw a story this morning someone was suing a specific journalist for $600 million.

Bottom line. White supremacist movement over the last few days was way against the loss of the Civil War, trying to protect the statue of General Lee.

Demanding that they do not have the right to assemble is not the same thing as condemning the movement.

The first amendment protects their right to assemble.
The first amendment protects your right to condemn the movement.

There is nowhere in the constitution that gives you the right to demand that anyone else does not have the right to express their opinions, legally assemble, or otherwise engage in free speech.

Charlottesville mayor largely blames Trump for white supremacist violence

Graphic video shows moment when car drives through protesters

The mayor of Charlottesville, Va., says President Trump bears responsibility for the violence that erupted during a white supremacist rally there Saturday.

“Look at the campaign he ran,” Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer said in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “I mean, look at the intentional courting, both on the one hand of all these white supremacists, white nationalists — a group like that — anti-Semitic groups, and then look on the other hand the repeated failure to step up, condemn, denounce, silence, you know, put to bed all those different efforts, just like we saw yesterday. I mean, this is not hard.”

“I’m not going to make any bones about it,” Signer told the Virginian-Pilot. “I place the blame for a lot of what you’re seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president.”

My biggest problem whole the last couple days has been the fact that the president did not specifically condemn the white supremacist group. They are neo-nazis anti-Semitic. Unbelievably bigoted. And look around how many republican said mr. President you need to come out and condemn them specifically. He blew his chance to really come out and look good yesterday. Donald Trump said...

Just so you understand, I don't know anything about David Duke, Ok. I don't know anything about what you're even talking about with white supremacy or white supemacists.

C.H. Truth said...

So Roger...

Can we be perfectly honest (and not worry about being politically correct) for a little while?

The reality is that Nazis, KKK, and other White Supremacists hold rallies all the time without violence. They generally apply for permits, schedule them so people know, and then they march or rally where ever it is that they are supposed to... generally with police on guard for crowd control.

The other reality is that BLV almost never applies for permits, they do not stay within any boundaries, and nearly every "protest" ends up with violence.

If you watch the video of the Dodge Challenger incident, it took place in the middle of the street and the car actually rammed into the car in front of him (as it wasn't moving due to the fact that couter-protesters were "stopping traffic"). The people who were injured were specifically those who were in the street attempting to "stop traffic" (which is a normal BLM tactic). Some of them who appeared injured were actually knocked down by the car that got run into, because they were gathered in front of it, preventing it from moving.

Eye witness accounts said that the counter-protesters where banging on the cars, throwing rocks, etc...

So the question here is simple... are we deciding who is to blame for the violence because of who exhibited the behavior that led to it? Or are we just wanting to conveniently blame the White Supremacists, simply because they are White Supremacists and because nobody likes them or likes what they stand for?

Again... you can condemn them for who they are. Fine. I certainly do.

But it's intellectually dishonest to place all the blame on them for what happened in Virginia... simply because you want to condemn their views.

The individual and collective ACTIONS of the people at the rally exist separately from what they supposedly stand for (and in my mind both groups are racist idiots). Those ACTIONS would logically show that this was not just the fault of the White Supremacists (as your media and political weenies would want you to believe). At least it's not.... if you are actually willing to be honest and objective.

Objectively... one of these two groups is prone to violence and was probably there to cause violence. The other is not necessarily prone to violence (at least not during assemblies) and the original intent was probably to actually protest the removal of the statue. (although I am sure some of rednecks were willing to take on the counter protesters).

So I believe that it is 100% fair to blame both groups, and certainly in my mind both groups are racist ass wipes who hate because they are bigots. To the degree that this is a "false equivalent" is largely a matter of those who believe that BLV (and their violent protests) is an acceptable form of political activism... while believing that the Nazis or the KKK hold "no" acceptable forms of political expression.

But beyond that. I'm assuming that they are an organization, to counter groups like white supremacist organizations.
I didn't know exactly if they are an organization.

But if they were there, and are an organization, fine.

First, the white supremacist organizations are really organizations, because they came together and apparently were organized, but apparently were not all from Virginia. They scattered today.

If the Bovine Leukemia Virus is an organization designed to confront the white Superiority group, you have a point, but I'm still not blame them for the big riot. They confronted the neo-Nazi group, because the white Superiority group wanted to protect the statue of General Lee.

They did go too far. But although the violence was over the top, they were confronting a disgusting and worse, racist, etc. We differ.

They weren't there to intentionally get violent. I'm assuming that.

They wouldn't have been there if the Nazis were not trying to continue the Civil War. I may have committed to the protest if I lived there.

IMO, as wrong as they were, they don't hold the blame. The white supremacist really did want to insight a riot.

I will get back a little later with the rest of this because my lovely wife just got back home and I want to chat with her a little bit. She was here a few hours here today.

Loretta said...

I woke up and read your post again.

"Objectively... one of these two groups is prone to violence and was probably there to cause violence. The other is not necessarily prone to violence (at least not during assemblies) and the original intent was probably to actually protest the removal of the statue. (although I am sure some of rednecks were willing to take on the counter protesters)."

Well, your assumption is not that objective. You believe that counter protesters were intentionally there to cause violence. But the heavily armed white supremacist were just protesting the removal of the statue. They were chanting Nazi slogans and horrible racist slogans. Let's not forget that the Civil war means to black Americans. And that we fought the German Nazi regime, costing over 400,000 Americans their lives. My father and his two brothers fought in the war. It cost my Uncle Lynn Amick his life. So yes I believe that they were intentionally promoting violence.

The counter protesters were not going to intentionally cause violence against the horrifying racist and anti-Semitic white supremacist. Counter protesting is also freedom of speech. I believe that the white supremacist group was hoping to promote counter violence. They succeeded. So that is why I don't agree with equal blame. You may not agree with me, but, that isn't unusual CH. The blame lies upon the white supremacist, Nazis and racists. Their intent was clear.

You were asked a question, and you specifically cannot answer it within the framework of how it was asked.

If you reread your own argument, it apparently is that White Supremacists are not entitled to hold a rally because you believe that what they stand for is wrong. You didn't condemn their actions (in fact you provide no example of any actions) other than the simple fact that they showed up (as they are entitled under the first amendment) to hold a rally for something you don't believe in, something you find offensive...

So apparently in your mind, because of who they are... any violence that is started is "their fault".

Moreover...

I don't make "any assumptions". I simply look objectively at the history of two groups as it pertains to these sorts of rallies.

One assembles with permits and there is rarely any real violence when they assemble. The other always organizes outside of the law, routinely breaks the law, and violence at these events seem to happen more times than not.

In this case from what I have read, the same thing holds true. One had a permit to demonstrate, while the other group did not.

_____

So answer the question from scratch.

Without judging their message (which is protected under the bill of rights) and without trying to argue that they should not have the right to protest (because they do under the first amendment)...

Tell me why the White Supremacists hold all the responsibility.

Reality is that you cannot do it.

So you will simply repeat the same thing you have argued from the start. When someone offends you, that should disqualify them from having the constitutional rights to free speech. If they try to engage in assembly, then it is justified to stop it by any means possible. You stated yourself that you may have gone there to engage in violence to stop it.

You might as well embrace your lack of respect for the first amendment and free expression. It's a pillar of modern day liberalism.

"In advance of [Saturday's] rally there have been communications from extremist groups, many of which are located outside of Virginia, who may seek to commit acts of violence against rally participants or law enforcement officials.

"In the event that such violent or unlawful conduct occurs, I have instructed state public safety officials to act quickly and decisively in order to keep the public and themselves safe," Governor McAuliffe's statement read. "I want to urge my fellow Virginians who may consider joining either in support or opposition to the planned rally to make alternative plans.

"Many of the individuals coming to Charlottesville are doing so in order to express viewpoints many people, including me, find abhorrent.

"As long as that expression is peaceful, that is their right. But it is also the right of every American to deny those ideas more attention than they deserve.

"Men and women from state and local agencies will be in Charlottesville tomorrow to keep the public safe, and their job will be made easier if Virginians, no matter how well-meaning, elect to stay away from the areas where this rally will take place."

The studies may solve the mystery of how North Korea began succeeding so suddenly after a string of fiery missile failures, some of which may have been caused by American sabotage of its supply chains and cyberattacks on its launches. After those failures, the North changed designs and suppliers in the past two years, according to a new study by Michael Elleman, a missile expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Roger -

You have not provided one good reason (other than actions that are protected by law) that the White Supremacists are the ones that demand the brunt of the blame.

The first amendment demands that they can hold whatever views they want. They can assemble in defense of those views. They can chant whatever it is that they want. They hold whatever flags, whatever signs, and dress however they want.

All protected by the first amendment.

What neither the first amendment or the law protects is someone deciding that because they disagree with what is being said, that it provides them with the right to threaten or use physical violence in response or threaten or use physical violence to shut down a rally.

Believe it or not... but the concept of "triggers' is not a legal defense for violence.

_____

Now I believe (and I really don't care who disagrees with me) that there is enough blame to go around. And I strongly believe the events of that day do not suggest that this violence can be blamed entirely on the White Supremacists... or they should not be "singled out" while we allow the BLM and Antifa groups to skate by as if they were the "good guys".

At least not if you pretend to still believe in our bill of rights.

President Trump bowed to overwhelming pressure that he personally condemn white supremacists who incited bloody demonstrations in Charlottesville over the weekend — labeling their racists views “evil” after two days of equivocal statements, the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Which still won't matter to many people... because he still holds the view that the other people there were "also" to blame for the violence... and to most liberals, such a view is unacceptable.

As usual, Roger the drunkard can't carry on a conversation with CH.

There is nothing good that can be said of your support or tolerance to this alt right bannon BS that resides in the oval office. kinda like your response to CH, alky.

you have yet to clearly articulate why the white supremacists are 100% to blame while domestic terror groups like antifa-g and black lies matter are blame free.

yeah, this is exactly why the chancellor at UC berzerkley spent $9 GRAND to have an escape door installed in his office. because UC berzerkely is crawling with white supremacists.

The University of California-Berkeley, a school famous for its history of student protests dating back to the 1960s, built an emergency escape door in its main administrative office last weekend in case future protests get too rowdy, according to campus newspaper The Daily Californian.

The newly installed exit cost $9,000 and is a direct response to a series of protests last year in which students staged a sit-in outside Chancellor Nicholas Dirks’ office, essentially barricading administrators inside. (Campus police officers eventually forced the students out of the building.) The door is in addition to a $700,000 fence erected around the chancellor’s house, which a university spokesperson told the Daily Cal has been been the target of “increasingly violent attacks,” including vandalism and torch-throwing.

our alky wrote -

"The counter protesters were not going to intentionally cause violence against the horrifying racist and anti-Semitic white supremacist. Their intent was clear."

ok alky, please explain how you could possibly know the true motives of both the white supremacists and the antifa thugs who were in attendance. i mean, in order to assign blame... or not, one would have to be completely informed of the true intent of all in attendance. you'd have to know exactly what each had planned and how they intended to carry it out. both words AND deeds. would you have us believe you're a closet white supremacist who had inside information on the details of the protest plans???

give it a shot. take your time and type slowly.

we'll wait.

President Trump's approval rating has dropped to its lowest level ever in a Gallup tracking poll.

The president's approval rating is only 34 percent in the latest Gallup average released Monday, while 61 percent of adults disapprove of the president's performance, also a new high.

Trump's approval rating has dropped at a time when he has taken heavy criticism for not explicitly calling out white supremacists and neo-Nazis in a statement condemning violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend.

His damage control might stop that.

By the way, you may not like my response to our host. But unlike you, I put though into my comments. All you have are insults, never a thought out comment, rrb. You are confused by anything that is longer than a three word comment.

my questions are meant to clarify, alky.

you obviously know much more than the rest of us, or that you're letting on. i just need you to come clean with us regarding how you knew, YOU KNEW, in advance, the planned motives and actions of the white guys and the fact that they would be solely to blame for any and all violence. while the motives of antifa were peaceful and pure.

let 'er rip, tater chip. take a crack at fleshing all this out for us, especially for CH since he originally asked you to do so.

you're not the only one who doesn't understand the first amendment -

And at City Hall, a planned news conference by Jason Kessler, the white nationalist who organized Saturday’s rally, came to an abrupt end when a man wearing a plaid shirt punched him.

“Jason Kessler has been bringing hate to our town for months and has been endangering the lives of people of color and endangering other lives in my community,” the man, Jeff Winder, said in an interview later.

“Free speech does not protect hate speech.”

Obama didn't say buckis after the Ferguson riots. Mensa

President Barack Obama said Thursday there is “no excuse” for violence against police or protestors in Ferguson, Mo., where intense clashes have broken out following the shooting death by police of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

In his first public statement on the death and subsequent violence, Obama appealed for justice and calm, calling on all sides to deescalate a tense situation that has embroiled the town in violence for five days. “I know that many Americans have been deeply disturbed by the images that we’ve seen in the heartland of our country,” Obama said.
