Do Democrats "really" care about the dreamers?

The buzz around the political water cooler is that the President sees potential dreamer legislation as a chance to do some wheeling and dealing. For one, it is said that he will demand that funding for "the wall" be included with any immigration package that includes any amnesty of any sort for pretty much anybody (including the dreamers).

Assuming the President is willing to stick to his guns (and I trust him more than congressional Republicans to do so)... the question that will have to be asked, is what will the Democrats do?

  • Will they refuse to go along with any legislation that includes any money for the southern wall as a matter of fundamental principal?
  • Will they be willing to make a confession or two in order to save their so called dreamer policy?
  • Will they blow up any deal because they believe that the politics of no action on anything important provides them with a better shot at picking up seats in 2018.
I am guessing that there will be about a 101 different polls, mostly push polls that are designed to show popular support for a particular position. But the one consistent message coming from the American public (from polls and elsewhere) is their desire to see the two Parties work together, make some mutual concessions, cut some deals, and get some stuff done.

If either side makes it generally obvious that they are unwilling to compromise (refusing to provide a couple of billion for the wall for instance), it certainly could come back to bite them. You can only get so far in this world by showing sympathy and talking a good game. At some point, you have to actually take tangible action to back up your words... otherwise those words become meaningless.

Again, look for the Democrats to demand a separate bill for DACA.  Look for Trump to threaten a veto anything that isn't a compromise and doesn't include his priorities as well. I think when it comes to the game of chicken, the person most willing to crash head on, is the one who generally wins. Trump hasn't exactly shown any desire to please the media or appease his political opponents. For him, it can't get any worse.

But if the Democrats allow their precious dreamers to lose their benefits, because they want to fight over a couple of billion dollars for what amounts to a pretty significant campaign promise... then I believe they would concede the higher ground. While their supporters will probably still blame Trump (and no doubt pop a major artery in the process) there comes a time when the mushy middle moderates start to lose patience with pure Trump hatred and the obstruction that comes with it.

There are two sides to your argument. The deeply divided Republican Party is just exhibited in the meeting yesterday, between Steve Bannon and the chairman of the "Freedom Caucus". Bannon promised a, and I quote, "A bloody September". They successfully blocked immigration reform, that had passed the Senate, with bipartisan support.

The president has limited impact because of his popularity is so low that a lot of people are going to say "I have to worry about him." I am much more concerned about my reelection chances because of the dreamer issue. This won't matter in the deeply conservative, generally rural districts. But in the suburban areas, that voted for Obama twice, if the house, and Speaker Ryan, are unable to pass anything that doesn't completely repeal The Dreamer executive order, that contains a path to citizenship, the Republican Party may pay a steep price in just one year from now.

There is a bill in the Senate, sponsored by Graham, and other Republicans and some Democrats, not just moderates. If that or a similar bill gets McConnell, on board, the Senate will pass an acceptable compromise, including the path to citizenship.

The President will probably have to support this bill. But, the BIG but, is the alt-right branch of the Republican party. It's just possible that with the President's support Ryan may be able to stifle the "Freedom Caucus". But it could cost him the Speaker position. Newt Gingrich paid for his compromise with President Clinton.

September promises to be very interesting.

I bet "everyone" would agree to stop talking about your personal life the same day you agree to stop talking about your personal life.

I mean, we are all aware the you are the intellectual superior to Steven Hawking, you are the Zig Zigler of Alcoholics Anonymous, you have the magnetic sex appeal that puts George Clooney to shame, and your wife is so beautiful she makes Melania Trump look like a mutt.

You tell us these things all the time... so they all must be true.

So... I think it's fair to say that you are inviting people into your personal life, by bringing up your personal life. If you were a bit more personally subdued in what you shared with people, they would be less inclined to comment on it.

The congress has a lot to do this month.

Hurricane Harvey relief.

Raise the debt ceiling by September 29.

Pass the budget by September 30

Reauthorize the FAA. Air Force One is going to golf courses and we need to keep the over budget Secret Service on course.

Extend the children's health insurance program.

Upgrade the national flood insurance program. Irma is a threat of epic proportions. But there's no climate change, it's just a coincidence that we have two of the largest number of deadly force hurricanes.

President Trump's tax reform.

Comprehensive immigration reform on everything including the Dreamers.

Let's just forget about Russia. We all know he's innocent, you betcha!!!

Roger - I don't think there is as much opposition to the "concept" of protecting some of the so called "dreamers"...

But there are two issues:

1) It legally cannot be done via an "executive order". Not only was the courts almost certainly going to overturn it on the grounds that there is no executive authority to grant status... but as Trump/Sessions proved...the next Administration can simply decide to not follow what the previous President implemented (Because there is no law requiring them to).

These so called "dreamers" were basically promised something from someone who did not have the authority to make such a promise on behalf of future Presidents, administrations, and attorney generals... who have no legal obligation to keep previous President's promises for them.

2) You cannot create a law that provides "incentive" for people to break other laws (even immigration law). So whatever plan is devised to keep those people who are currently effected... cannot be an open invitation for others to enter the country illegally, with the intention of garnering legal protection for their children (which they can eventually piggy back themselves onto for attempts to gain citizenship).

Eventually Americans must come to the realization that it's in "OUR" best interests to determine which people are granted legal status... rather than simply allow those who are willing to break the law to be given precedent over those who are willing to abide by the law.

_____

Explain to us Roger (one of those tough questions that is on subject):

Why is it better to reward those who are breaking the law...
While punishing those who are willing to actually obey the law....

Because that is what amnesty does. All the window dressing and pulls to your heartstrings aside... those following the laws are getting the shaft, while those who break them are being rewarded.

Is that the "liberal way" ??

indeed. people who brag up their life, especially when that life is a fully engulfed dumpster fire of dogshit have self esteem issues.

being the grand poo-bah of drunks are us is nothing to brag about.

having the most amazing recovery in the history of recoveries when it comes to a liver transplant you required because the liver you were born with you drank to death, is nothing to brag about.

repeatedly telling us you have a 'disease" when what you have is an abject and massive personal failure is nothing to brag about.

having a mortgage that will only be paid off when your survivors cash in your life insurance is nothing to brag about.

needing a union to do your thinking for you over the course of your entire career is nothing to brag about.

being as wrong as fucking wrong can be when making the most basic political pontification is nothing to brag about.

and last but not least...

driving a pt cruiser out in public during the day when people can actually see you is definitely nothing to brag about.

guess who?:

[T]here are those in the immigrants’ rights community who have argued passionately that we should simply provide those who are [here] illegally with legal status, or at least ignore the laws on the books and put an end to deportation until we have better laws. …

I believe such an indiscriminate approach would be both unwise and unfair. It would suggest to those thinking about coming here illegally that there will be no repercussions for such a decision. And this could lead to a surge in more illegal immigration. And it would also ignore the millions of people around the world who are waiting in line to come here legally.

Ultimately, our nation, like all nations, has the right and obligation to control its borders and set laws for residency and citizenship. And no matter how decent they are, no matter their reasons, the 11 million who broke these laws should be held accountable.

During a speech at the Immigration Law & Policy Conference at Georgetown Law, Schumer repeatedly argued that immigration reform should focus on encouraging legal immigration and should make clear that “illegal immigration is wrong.”

“The American people are fundamentally pro-legal immigration and anti-illegal immigration,” Schumer explained at the conference. “We will only pass comprehensive reform when we recognize this fundamental concept.”

“The following seven principles are all based on this concept and comprise what I believe to be the framework for a bill that can receive overwhelming and bipartisan congressional support,” he said.

“First, illegal immigration is wrong,” Schumer declared, “and a primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration.”
