A reasonable immigration compromise?

The White House has unveiled a proposal that provides a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants living in the country illegally, in exchange for new restrictions on legal immigration and $25 billion in border security.
Obviously, the $25 billion will include some funds for a wall. But let's move past that for now. The wall is a separate conversation.

The bottom line: a pathway to citizenship is just that; a pathway. It doesn't mean that 1.8 million would ever become citizens. Likely only a portion of those will ever actually meet all the requirements for citizenship. Meanwhile, whatever number of dreamers that become citizens should be more than offset by the reduction of chain migration and the elimination of immigration lottery.

The question seems to be, would we rather grant citizenship to people who are currently living here, or grant citizenship to more uncles, second cousins, and people randomly selected from other countries?

While for some hardliners, the answer would be neither... the truth is that either way, this is going to have to be a compromise of sorts. This one seems reasonable. Which is why I am sure those on the far right and far left flanks will be red faced and screaming over this.

Any reasonably fair resolution will lead to more immigrants becoming legal citizens and voting Democratic. That's the real problem your side has with this.

and you're assuming we let them vote any time soon, pederast.

trump is proposing 10 - 12 years before they even become citizens. the only way they vote during that time frame is by democrats committing voter fraud to allow it.

Actually, I would say that is the Democrat's problem.

As they continue to lose actual American votes and actual elections they realize that their only way to make up for it is to import voters.

Think about it James. Democrats garner 85% of first generation Spanish speaking Hispanics... but less than 50% of third generation English speaking Hispanics.

Once you turn off the faucet... the water is going to settle in places you don't care for

I have looked at the elections. We have a GOP President, a GOP House, and a GOP Senate... and the Democrats are in the worst shape (as a percentage of power) as they have been in a hundred years.

As far as the polls are concerned... you should go over to that Special Counsel thread.

There is a guy over there that is telling us that polls can be biased and prone to manipulation.

Perhaps you can argue with him... that he is wrong.

Davos Economic Forum attendees booed President Donald Trump at an appearance on Friday in which he criticized the media as “fake.”

Trump told world political and business leaders at the annual gathering in Switzerland that as a businessman, he received positive media coverage, but once he launched his presidential campaign in 2015, he realized that reporters were “nasty” and “fake,” eliciting boos from people in the audience.

“It wasn’t until I became a politician that I realized how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be ― as the cameras start going off in the back,” Trump said. The president frequently makes the false claim that television cameras don’t air his anti-media remarks.

Michelle Obama Has Some Words For Women Who Voted Against Hillary Clinton
It's about the voice you choose to listen to.
By Cavan Sieczkowski
Fifty-three percent of white women and 42 percent of women overall voted for President Donald Trump rather than Hilary Clinton in the 2016 election. And Michelle Obama has some thoughts as to why.

The former first lady was a speaker at the Inbound marketing conference in Boston, Massachusetts, Wednesday, where she sat down for a Q&A with author Roxane Gay. During the conversation, she broached the subject of women who chose to vote for Trump instead of Clinton.

“Quite frankly we saw this in this election, as far as I’m concerned. Any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton voted against their own voice in a way,” she said. “To me, it doesn’t say as much about Hillary Clinton ― and everybody’s trying to wonder. Well, what does it mean for Hillary? ― No, no, no. What does it mean for us as women? That we look at those two candidates, as women, and many of us said, ‘That guy. He’s better for me. His voice is more true to me.’ Well, to me that just says you don’t like your voice. You like the thing you’re told to like.”

If she was paid anything, I would say she was paid to say nothing.

But I will note, that the WSJ and other news outlets that said she signed an NDA has failed to produce the NDA she was supposed to have signed.

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyers produce a statement that she signed under oath that denied any sexual affair.

Commonsense said...

In court that is called a preponderance of evidence.

wphamilton said...

Is it a preponderance? Seriously, CS. You refer to a statement by Trump's lawyers. Evidently, on the other side, we have her account, corroborating witnesses of the affair, a passed polygraph test. In court (your stipulation), the lawyer's statement is overwhelmed by the other side. Lawyers claim whatever they want to, but that almost never weighs against the evidence.

Anonymous said...

Congrats WP.

Commonsense said...

You refer to a statement by Trump's lawyers.

I refer to the signed statement by Stormy Daniels herself.

If you believe it's a forgery then you should say so. But you should have evidence to back it up.

I do not believe it is a forgery and it is in fact what she attested to.

wphamilton said...

Most likely the signed statement was a term of the settlement. In other words, she was paid to say that. It is standard operating procedure with settlements. An NDA or non-disparagement as well. I myself have several, both employment related and civil. They would have no bearing in a court (which is also something that only you have insisted on), and would not impeach contrary testimony in court if they WERE brought up.

No one suggested it was a forgery - why do you even bring that up?

Commonsense said...

You cannot compel a false statement under oath as part of an NDA. It is suborning perjury and it would be illegal and unenforceable.

It would be nice if you had something more than just speculation.

wphamilton said...

What court was this document rendered to, "under oath", under what court case? Who administered this "oath"? Unless you can answer, there is no "under oath".

Where has Stormy Daniels testified "under oath"?

It was just a paper that Stormy Daniels signed as part of a settlement. It's meaningless in your court scenario.

Commonsense said...

Affidavits are signed in law offices and other places all the time under oath. They don't not need a court case or court supervision.

You sign your tax return yearly attesting the information in it is true to the best of your knowledge under penalty of perjury.

Your argument is irrelevant.

C.H. Truth said...

The original story from Stormy (from 2011) suggested she had a one night stand with Trump, largely because she found him to be fascinating, charming, and that they had been engaged in some very good intelligent banter that apparently attracted her to him.

She goes to his apartment. They have dinner. She goes to the bathroom. He gets undressed and goes to his bedroom. She comes out of the bathroom and goes into the bedroom and has sex with him. She claims it was basic one position sex. "What you would expect from a guy his age". She offers that "it wasn't bad. Don't get me wrong".

There is some implication (if you read deep enough between the lines) that Trump was offering her a spot on the Celebrity Apprentice, and that she might have sex with him to grease the wheels on that. But she never comes right out and says so.

Probably just one of those examples of the many many beautiful women throwing themselves at the Donald (as he suggested in the now famous Trump/Bush ET secret tape).

So yea... if you find it reasonable that a porn star like Stormy would find Donald Trump so fascinating as to have sex with him on your first private encounter... then you go with it.

Personally... I guess it really doesn't matter one way or the other. Kennedy had Marilyn Monroe, Trump had Stormy Daniels (maybe),\ and Clinton had... um Monica Lewinski.

wphamilton said...

"Affidavits are signed in law offices and other places all the time under oath"

These things are signed all the time, with no oath at all. You're just bullshitting now.

A signed statement is vastly different than an "affidavit signed under oath". You have exactly zero reason to believe the latter, except that you really, really want to believe it.

wphamilton said...

So yea... if you find it reasonable that a porn star like Stormy would find Donald Trump so fascinating as to have sex with him on your first private encounter... then you go with it.

I've got no problem at all with Trump having sex with a porn star, nor with her reasons for doing it. It's not going to "bring down" his Presidency. I don''t think there are any legalities involved. As far as I'm concerned, it just another typical Trump behavior, probably exploiting his position for a little fun, and exploiting his wealth to bury it.

His supporters will just babble about "signed affidavits" that only exist in their imaginations and deny the whole thing, and everyone else sees it as morally bankrupt, same Trump as always. It doesn't change anything.

Commonsense said...

You're quite wrong, affidavits are always under oath and penalty of perjury.

A signed statement is vastly different than an "affidavit signed under oath". You have exactly zero reason to believe the latter, except that you really, really want to believe it.

You mean except for the fact the affidavit exist and it was signed in the presents of witnesses and that no one in the world except you denies that it exist.

There's a point when your denial of facts become unhealty and psychotic.
