Immigration deal dead?

Looks that way, at least in the Senate. Several bills got support, some even majority support. But nothing came close to the 60 votes necessary. The closest bill to 60 votes was probably the bill least likely to make it through the House and be signed by the President.

The reality here... and it is reality even if it sounds partisan... is that the GOP was willing to upset their base and actually offer amnesty to get something done. Ironically I read in the Washington Post that the problem with cutting the deal is that the GOP insisted on making changes to chain migration and the visa lottery, which they called a "toxic" request for the GOP to make.

I find it amusing  that when the GOP requires something that the public wants (but the base of the Democratic Party doesn't) - that it's considered toxic. But if the Democrats require something (like amnesty) that the general public wants (but the base of the Republican Party doesn't) there doesn't seem to be much of an issue with it.

In other words... the media continues to argue that the far left views are mainstream (even if the general public disagrees).  Meanwhile they continue to argue that GOP views (even when the general public agrees) are radical and toxic.

Moreover, it seems fairly obvious that the media has forgotten who actually was elected to run the executive branch and both chambers of congress. The majority is under no obligation to cater to the wants of the minority.

Wired reports that following the school shooting in Florida on Wednesday, Russian bots “flooded Twitter” to spread pro-gun messaging and stir up discord.

On Subject: Pay attention to the last part.

Inside the Senate’s Immigration Breakdown

Politico: “The Senate’s spectacular failure to address the plight of the most sympathetic batch of immigrants in the country illegally — a group that President Donald Trump once declared he had ‘great love’ for — was the latest display of legislative ineptitude in the upper chamber. This account, detailing the demise of the months-long immigration push, is based on interviews with more than a dozen senators and aides who’ve worked on the issue since Trump announced last fall he was rescinding the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.”

“While senators vowed to try again, there’s no apparent reason to think the next time will be any different. Immigration has always been polarizing and difficult to tackle, but Trump’s ascendance has made it that much more so, diminishing trust and depleting the group of dealmaking senators it would take to clear the chamber’s 60-vote threshold.

KD -

Yes... it expires. There are a couple of Judges who have claimed that the President was acting unconstitutionally with his actions (both claiming that he didn't provide a good enough reason - as if our entire system of Government is now subject to the opinions of the district courts and the several hundred judges who sit on them).

But I suspect that both sides know that is not going to hold up on appeal. The similar program that Obama created via executive fiat for adults was rejected as outside the authority of the President.

In other words... there is actually no law that protects the dreamers. Technically, by actual law they are illegal immigrants and could be deported. There was an executive order that was reversed by an executive order that provided them with some limited and temporary protection.

WHY WE NEED THE WALL - IT WORKS

When men in olive coveralls began to install 18-foot-high corrugated metal fencing on the international border between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez in 2008, Carlos Marentes joined protesters who complained that building the barrier was like cutting off circulation to America's own limb.

It was no surprise to him when the city on the Mexican side of the border fence began to wither and die. As Juarez descended into years of drug-fueled violence, El Paso thrived, ranking among the safest cities in the U.S.

Clearly the President's radical demands were unpopular, even among the Republican leadership. The more centrist bipartisan approach is the only path forward.

As for the beautiful wall, I guess Trump will have to force Mexico to build it after all. Since Trump has failed again to get Congress to fund it.

So mueller has indicted 13 Russians who supposedly supported Trump and disparaged hillary. No doubt they were different Russians who were taking millions of dollars from hillary to make sure she won and trump didn't. Mueller has no interest in them I guess.

I don't it was the President's demands so much as the "citizenship at the end of the line" that was the deal breaker.

Obama out of whole cloth creates DACA with an expiration date. DEMS , could have made it law, too much work for the lazy Obimbo.

Mueller is going to have to explain how this is different from legitimate 1st amendment activity.

Should be interesting.

Our very own oPie sad today that the Mu Eller is only to look at facts leading to the removal of this President

All polling suggests that people want to ditch the Visa Lottery and limit Chain Migration.

They are only toxic from a political standpoint, because Democratic Politicans are against it.

I would think that it might bother you that "moderate" now is a term to describe out the politicians feel about something, rather than how the general public feels about something.

It used to be that a plan that had 2-1 support in the general public was considered fair and likely moderate. Now we only consider if something can convince enough of the hard cores on either side to support it.

Hint James; It's already the law. Congress can't stop it without passing a law and Trump signs it.

By not passing a law. You do understand this, correct?

Since it wasn't a majority that elected Trump, you're beginning to see what his problem is. The rest of us - the majority - have no obligation to cater to his silly demands.

Everyone likes "border security". Obviously that phrase is going to poll well. His wall, not so much. Letting in terrorists at random, of course everyone is opposed to that. Ending random terrorist admission will poll well. What about allowing only those who meet ALL admission qualifications, comes from an accepted nation, AND have an education, AND at least two recent years employment in an occupation that requires years of training? That would poll better ... aka the Visa Lottery.

So please, enough with the push poll data.

Trump thinks that foreign nations are picking the dregs of their population, "the worst of the worst", and sending those people to the USA. Seriously, that's what Trump thinks it is - his remarks to the FBI National Academy.

A minority of people are just dumb. The majority is under no obligation to cater to the wants of dumb people, especially when those "wants" are unpopular demands with respect to immigration.

Okay WP...

I guess if 62% of the public wants something... they are the minority because you believe they are "dumb".

Of course, this opinion comes from someone who keep insisting that 62% is a minority.

You think 62% want to build Trump's wall, CH?

I find it amusing that the supposedly conservative, fiscally responsible party wants to spend $25 billion (and rising) of our tax dollars on the most expensive single structure in human history.

And that they want Big Government to rescue them from illegal immigrants and (they imagine) save their jobs.

Not to mention that they just added $1.5 trillion to the debt with a crony kickback disguised as a tax cut, passed a government spending plan that exceeds anything even the Obama administration ever spent in one budget, and wants to spend another trillion or two on infrastructure boondoggles.

Hell, at this rate the Democrats are looking like the more fiscally conservative party.
