So why is it that...

When it comes to defending the investigation into Trump and the unsubstantiated Russian collusion... liberals love to use the logic that if Trump has nothing to hide, then he should welcome  a multi-million dollar 30 man investigation that operates outside of normal due process requirements.

But on the flip side, the FBI should be given the benefit of the doubt, everything should be swept under the rug, and nobody should be given even the slightest bit of information about what they are doing. They have nothing to hide, liberals argue, so let's hide it anyways.

Wouldn't consistency require that liberals argue that if the FBI has nothing to hide, that they (like Donald Trump) should also be welcoming of investigation, fact gathering, and ultimately a public accounting for how they are performing their duties?

Or is this just another example of hypocrisy being the bedrock of liberalism?

Here's a "little thought experiment” from Naval War College professor Tom Nichols:

“It’s 2017, and President Hillary Clinton is facing charges that Chelsea met with Russians who offered oppo on Trump. Chelsea didn’t call the FBI; and Clinton nat sec adviser Jake Sullivan lied to the FBI about talking to the Russians.”

President Clinton fires the F.B.I. director after he declines her request to “let it go” on Sullivan. “Then, at least three other Clinton campaign officials end up indicted. All of them are tied in some way to a hostile foreign power.” Later, she threatens to “yank FOX’s license” because she didn’t like its critical coverage.

“I’m sure … totally sure …” Nichols added with no little irony, “that stalwarts of the G.O.P. would say: Look, this is a nothingburger, you can’t define ‘collusion,’ it’s just ‘the coffee boy,’ and on and on.”

The news is even better than that excerpt suggests. The 42/50 split is among all adults; among registered voters, he’s at 44/48. To put that in perspective, from June 2017 all the way through December, Trump hit 44 percent in a poll tracked by RCP exactly … once. One time. Now he’s at 44 percent in Monmouth — but not just Monmouth. Check this out.

He’s at 44 — or better — in four of the last five national polls taken. If there was any lingering doubt that passing tax cuts has brightened the country’s mood about him, that should end it

What I read is that Thunes wanted to make sure that the FBI could view the memo and make sure that no information about sources and methods were compromised.

As far as I have read, Thunes never suggested (one way or the other) if the memo should be released to the public:

Thune also said that Nunes should heed the concerns of FBI Director Christopher Wray about divulging information about the agency’s sources and methods.

“They have to take into consideration what the FBI is saying, and if there are things that need to be redacted, I think they need to pay careful attention to what our folks who protect us have to say about how this bears on our national security,”

Thunes would not be asking the FBI to "redact" part of it, if he didn't ultimately believe it would (or should) be released.

Source: FBI still has 'grave concerns' about Nunes memo
CNN 54 mins ago

With concern at the White House about potential blowback from FBI Director Christopher Wray, the FBI continues to have "grave concerns" over release of a memo from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, a source said Thursday.

"There are still grave concerns about this memo," an official familiar with the FBI stance told CNN.

The House Intelligence Committee, in a party-line vote on Monday, moved to release the highly controversial memo alleging abuse of surveillance powers by the FBI and put release of the memo in President Donald Trump's hands.

The FBI issued a statement warning against releasing the memo as the White House signaled Trump would make it public.

"As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy," the FBI said in a statement Wednesday.

California's Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee's top Democrat, said on Wednesday evening that Nunes had altered the memo, and a source said Wray was "raising hell," but had not threatened to resign.

In light of the allegations about edits and the broader ongoing debate, the official familiar with the FBI's stance said the bureau's position remains the same.

"The FBI said in their statement that this memo contained 'material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy,' " the official said. "There may be editing of the text of this memo, but that doesn't change the overall false narrative."

The official continued, "It sounds like this is spin to justify the release of the memo."

Republicans Finally Give Up on Obamacare Repeal

Politico: “Though the GOP still controls both chambers of Congress and maintains the ability to jam through a repeal-and-replace bill via a simple majority, there are no discussions of doing so here at House and Senate Republicans’ joint retreat at The Greenbrier resort. Republicans doubt they can even pass a budget providing for the powerful party-line ‘reconciliation’ procedure used to pass tax reform last year, much less take on the politically perilous task of rewriting health care laws in an election year.

“Republicans’ decision to abstain from another attempt at gutting Barack Obama’s health law — at least this year — goes back on a pledge the party has made to voters since 2010. And it underscores how Republicans overpromised in their ability to reform the nation’s health care and never fully recognized how divided the party is over key Obamacare planks like protecting pre-existing conditions and preserving the law’s Medicaid expansion.”

Trump Will Allow Release of Memo

President Trump “cleared the way for the release of a secret memo written by Republican congressional staffers and said to accuse federal law enforcement officials of abusing their surveillance authorities,” the New York Times reports.

“The president’s decision came despite a growing chorus of warnings from national security officials who say that releasing the document would jeopardize sensitive government information, including how intelligence is gathered, and from Democrats who say it is politically motivated and distorts the actions of the Justice Department and the F.B.I. by omitting crucial context.”

Daily Beast: “Former FBI agents are warning that FBI Director Christopher Wray has to be prepared to quit, should President Donald Trump assent over bureau objections to the release of a memo calling the FBI’s integrity into question.”

GOP case: FBI probe based on tainted evidence linked to Clinton

Congressional Republicans are seeking to make the case that the FBI’s investigation into President Trump’s campaign and possible collusion with Russia was based on flawed or politically tainted evidence connected to partisans loyal to Hillary Clinton.

The House Intelligence Committee memo spearheaded by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) that is the talk of Washington will be at the center of the argument. The release of that four-page memo is expected as early as Friday.

They will argue the FBI failed to critically assess the political motives and credibility of Steele and did not fully disclose that evidence came from Clinton supporters as it sought to get permission from courts for surveillance warrants.

“The fact that half to three-quarters of the evidence the FBI used to unleash the most awesome of surveillance powers upon Donald Trump’s inner circle came from sources tied directly to his Democratic opponent should worry us all, especially when that happened during an election,” said one senior Republican directly familiar with the evidence, describing the party’s core concerns.

Comey rips 'weasels and liars,' invokes Joe McCarthy in Twitter rant
FOX News 1 hr ago

(not really a rant, that's just FOX BS)

Former FBI Director James Comey lashed out at unnamed "weasels and liars" on social media late Thursday, hours before President Trump was expected to declassify a controversial memo about purported surveillance abuses over the objections of Democrats.

"All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would," Comey wrote on Twitter.

"But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up.

"Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy," Comey added, a reference to the Wisconsin senator who claimed high-ranking government officials were Soviet spies in the 1950s.

Comey appeared to be referencing an FBI statement released Wednesday that objected to the release of the memo, authored by House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif. That statement said the FBI had "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy."

Sources told Fox News Thursday that the version of the memo Trump plans to declassify contains "technical edits" made at the FBI's request. The sources said the edited version was shown to five FBI officials at the White House on Tuesday afternoon and the officials were satisfied that the edits addressed concerns they had about an earlier version of the memo that was reviewed on Monday. IN OTHER WORDS, TRUMP GAVE IN.

The memo purportedly is critical of the FBI's use of surveillance during the 2016 presidential campaign, particularly in the initial stages of its investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether the Trump campaign improperly coordinated with Russia and whether Trump sought to obstruct the inquiry by, among other actions, firing Comey.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that Trump has told confidants in recent days that he believes the document will validate his concerns that the FBI and Justice Department conspired against him and bolsters his claim that the collusion accusations are false and part of a conspiracy to discredit his election.

COMEY TWEETS 'JUSTICE' BIBLE VERSE AFTER FLYNN PLEADS GUILTY
Comey has not been shy about using Twitter to comment on the ongoing Russia investigation. In December, he posted a Bible verse after news broke that former national security adviser Michael Flynn would plead guilty to lying to the FBI and would cooperate with the Mueller probe.

"But justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream," Comey tweeted, quoting the prophet Amos.

On Monday, Comey defended recently removed FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, saying he "stood tall ... when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on.

"I wish Andy well. I also wish continued strength for the rest of the FBI," Comey wrote. "America needs you."

Yep, Trump is tweeting this morning. But there is PLENTY of doubt about what he says.

Anonymous James, citing evidence, said...

Trump attacks the FBI and Justice Department as the war over the memo and Russia investigation heat up

President Donald Trump attacked the leadership of the FBI and Justice Department on Twitter on Friday morning.

He said they had "politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats."

Trump has been attacking key figures in investigations into whether his campaign colluded with Russia or whether he obstructed justice during the first investigation.

President Donald Trump attacked the leadership of the FBI and Justice Department on Twitter on Friday morning, saying they had "politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats."

"The top Leadership and Investigators of the FBI and the Justice Department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats and against Republicans - something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago. Rank & File are great people!" Trump tweeted.

Trump's attack on the FBI investigators and Justice Department's leader, WHOM HE APPOINTED, comes after a week filled of heated debate over the release of a memo that Republicans say indicates an FBI bias against Trump.

In a later tweet, Trump quoted Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a conservative organization, saying: "You had Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party try to hide the fact that they gave money to GPS Fusion to create a Dossier which was used by their allies in the Obama Administration to convince a Court misleadingly, by all accounts, to spy on the Trump Team."

The memo allegedly suggests that FBI and DOJ officials relied on politically motivated sources, namely the infamous dossier that both Republicans and Democrats funded at different times as opposition research into Trump to justify spying on members of Trump's team.

Earlier this week, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee voted to release the memo to the public despite strong opposition from Democrats and Justice Department officials.

On Wednesday, the FBI made a rare public statement warning against the memo's release, citing "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy."

Arguably, TRUMP HAS DONE AS MUCH TO POLITICIZE bipartisan investigations into Russia's meddling in the US's 2016 presidential election AS ANYONE. Many experts DISMISS recent attempts to open investigations into the FBI's handling of Hillary Clinton's use of personal servers for government business as a PARTISAN ATTEMPT TO DISCREDIT THE FBI.

But while Trump is widely seen as trying to smear key figures in investigations against him, special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign appears to be HEATING UP.

Investigators now have evidence that ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, Trump tried to pin down the loyalty of a top law-enforcement official looking into his campaign, possibly implicating Trump in an OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE case.
