A person I know fairly well went to prison for a while. At the end of the day, he probably deserved to do some time, although he would likely argue differently.

His daughters (who were grade school age at the time) set a place at the table for him every day for like the first year or so he was gone. They couldn't quite come to grips with the fact that their father was not with them.

Yeah, it sucks for kids when their parents break the law.

But we don't allow people who break the law to go unpunished, simply because we don't want to harm the children.

Is there a "good reason" that anyone can come up with, as to why we should be more concerned with the children of criminals from "other countries" than we show for the children of our own country?

Make no mistake...

The problem for liberals is that the current Administration is following and enforcing the law. Not sure why they seem to have a problem with law enforcement?

Hypocrisy bedrock of liberalism

Over 20,000 children a year are put into foster care because their American parents are taken to jail, 10 times the number of those separated when illegal immigrant parents try to sneak into the U.S. but are caught, according to a commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

However, unlike the congressional outcry over President Trump’s zero-tolerance policy targeting illegal immigration, there has been no mass protest of or investigation into the separation of children from those in jail.

In a letter to Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, Peter N. Kirsanow, a commissioner on the United States Commission on Civil Rights, said that in fiscal year 2016 alone, 20,939 children of incarcerated parents were put into foster care.

Yes, they are. They are enforcing the law. Your choice is between enforcing and not enforcing the law.

Why don't you give a shit about those thousands of children sitting inside cages crying out loud?

You mean the “Obama cages”? Facilities for children have been immensely improved under Trump. They now most represent an orphanage where the children live in safe neat and clean housing and are taught basic hygiene and English.

These are not people who are attempting to cross the border illegally.

Yes, they are. That’s why they are in jail.

They are going to points of entry.

If that was true they would wait there while their asylum application was processed. But they are not going to points of entry, they are illegally crossing the border.

caliphate4vr said...

The administration’s “zero tolerance” policy at the border has engendered one of the more intense firestorms of Trump’s presidency, and that’s saying something.

The administration has moved to prosecute all adults illegally crossing the border, including those traveling with children. This entails the separation of the children from the adults, who are taken into custody of the criminal-justice system, which doesn’t take care of kids. They go to shelters. The legal proceedings against the adults, unless there is an aggravating factor, are rapid and pro forma — they are charged with a misdemeanor offense, and they usually plead guilty and are sentenced to time served. The idea is to send a message that we take our laws seriously and create a deterrent against illegal re-entry, which is a felony. The entire process takes a matter of days. In theory, then the adults can be reunited with their children and deported together.

But the adults will often claim asylum. The administration wants to hold as many of the migrants as possible while their claims are adjudicated, because if they are released they are likely to abscond. Under a more rational system, the parents and the children could be held together. But the long-standing Flores consent decree, recently expanded by the courts, makes it impossible to hold minors for more than about 20 days. This means that if we want to keep families together the only option is to release them together — creating an incentive for more migrants to make the dangerous journey to the border, to get released into the interior in their turn.

This is an insane way to run an immigration system and starkly pits humanitarian concerns against enforcement. It’s easy to condemn the separations at the border — they are indeed wrenching and appear to be overwhelming an already taxed system. But most critics don’t grapple with the fact that the administration literally doesn’t have the option of holding parents and kids together for more than a few weeks, which isn’t long enough to resolve an asylum claim.

Congress needs to address all this. It should give the executive the authority to hold kids longer than mandated in the Flores decree; fix provisions in a well-intentioned anti-trafficking law that make it difficult to quickly deport Central American minors; appropriate funds for more detention space, especially family space; and hire more immigration judges and do everything possible to expedite the asylum process. (Attorney General Sessions took a step in the right direction by making it clear asylum isn’t for people fleeing general disorder or abusive relationships — it’d be even better if all asylum seekers had to apply at our consulates abroad or at ports of entry.)

The House is about to consider DACA legislation but should break out a border package focused on these measures, and Ted Cruz is proposing a similar bill in the Senate. It should have a good chance of passage in the slipstream of outrage over the last week; if Democrats won’t support it, it will be a telling statement that they oppose enforcing our immigration laws as much as separating families.

The only way that the ongoing influx at the border will stop is if migrants realize that they won’t make it into the United States. Congress has it within its power to make it possible to hold families together and — if they don’t have legitimate asylum claims — swiftly return them home together. It should act, and act quickly.

from my vantage point liberals are having two reactions to this whole situation:

1) they're angry that the law is being enforced

2) they're scared shitless that trump is keeping his campaign promise of enforcing the border.

and it's #2 that matters because it speaks directly to trump's re-election prospects. if it appears to trump's supporters that he's doing what he said he'd do, they'll turn out to vote for him for re-election as enthusiastically as they did the first time.

Listen to the cries of small children being torn apart from parents, crying out "Daddy, Mommy".

LET'S BE HONEST. Separation of thousands of children from their parents at the border is NOT A LAW made by congress, it's a chosen DISCRETIONARY POLICY made by President Trump and a child-abusing PRACTICE carried out by the DHS Secretary. The law does not require separation; Trump's policy and practice does.

To describe it otherwise is a deliberate lie and false fact! Trump is clearly using and abusing children, seeking asylum from harm, as political pawns (as means to his end) to build his border wall.

Trump (and his mouth-speaker puppets) is an inept would-be "magician", trying via MISDIRECTION to call our attention to the wild flourishes of his left hand (blaming democrats and congress), while performing his right hand (separating of children from their parents) cruel, hurtful, harmful, mean, marginalizing, uncivilized, dehumanizing un-American actions.
It's effectively like destroying the Statue of Liberty. Children crossing our border seeking safety are not political pawns; they are precious vulnerable bundles of tempest-tossed humanity. A border does not separate our common universal humanity. We are them. They are us. We are one. "E pluribus unum" -- "out of many, one" (U.S. motto, still to be revered)

well alky, since you asked, i care exponentially more for american children. american children who are getting a shitty public school education because of your beloved union scumbags. i care more about american children who are killed by illegal criminal aliens. i care more about american children who will have to enter a workforce someday and may end up living on a wage depressed by illegal criminal immigrants who have no fucking business in our workforce.

oh, and i care a helluva lot more for the immigrants to our shores who i welcome with open arms because they arrived here LEGALLY, and are working through the citizenship process LEGALLY.

if these 3rd world shithole scumbags care so little for their own children as to use them as political pawns, that's on them alky. not on me.

Trump Administration Lying About Separation Policy

Washington Post: “Our analysis finds the doublespeak coming from President Trump and top administration officials on this issue is breathtaking, not only because of the sheer audacity of these claims but also because they keep being repeated without evidence.

“Immigrant families are being separated at the border not because of Democrats and not because some law forces this result, as Trump insists. They’re being separated because the Trump administration, under its zero-tolerance policy, is choosing to prosecute border-crossing adults for any offenses.”

Trump Wants to Rally GOP Base Over Immigration

“As Republicans try to keep their midterm election strategy focused on the economy, tax cuts and falling unemployment, President Trump sent his clearest signal yet on Monday that he intends to make divisive, racially charged issues like immigration central going into the campaign season,” the New York Times reports.

“Facing bipartisan criticism over his administration’s family separation practice on the border, Mr. Trump renewed the sort of bald and demagogic attacks on undocumented immigrants that worked well for him politically in his 2016 presidential campaign.”

Trump Loses Temper Over Border Wall Funding

Politico: “In a private meeting regarding the wall Monday, Trump fumed to senators and his own staff about the $1.6 billion the Senate is planning to send him this fall, according to two people familiar with the meeting. Trump wants the full $25 billion upfront and doesn’t understand why Congress is going to supply him funds in a piecemeal fashion — even though that’s how the spending process typically works.

"The president said at the meeting that if Congress doesn’t give him the resources he needs for border security, he will shut down the government in September, according to one of the people familiar with the meeting. He did not give a specific number, but has been fixated on getting the $25 billion in a lump sum.”

Quit lying. Please. Everyone is tired of your excessive lies.

The fact is that these people are not legal citizens of our country. It doesn't matter if they apply for asylum or not. They are not legal citizens and illegal citizens are not allowed into this country without some form of legal standing (Asylum, green card, etc...)

The old policy under Obama was simple. You stopped them making their attempts to illegally cross into our country. You allowed them to apply for asylum rather than send them back. Then you allowed them to enter the country while you processed their asylum.

The new policy is exactly as it should be. If they want to apply for asylum after getting caught trying to enter the United States illegally... then they are going to be detained while their asylum is being processed. If they are accepted, then they get to go in. If they are rejected, then they send them back.

Why is this SO FUCKING HARD for you to understand?

Meanwhile... we can all just picture the veins on your head start to throb and turn blue, as you angrily demand that Trump is making up laws on the fly.

Sort of like how much you pissed and moaned about dairy tariffs from Canada, not realizing that they were set in place prior to Trump even being elected. Trump was trying to help dairy farmers and you (pun intended) were having a cow about it.

You really just refuse to gather any facts.

(CNN)Donald Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen has signaled to friends that he is "willing to give" investigators information on the President if that's what they are looking for, and is planning on hiring a new lawyer to handle a possible indictment from federal prosecutors.

"He knows a lot of things about the President and he's not averse to talking in the right situation," one of Cohen's New York friends who is in touch with him told CNN. "If they want information on Trump, he's willing to give it."
Cohen is planning to hire Guy Petrillo, a former chief of the criminal division of the US attorney's office in Manhattan and an experienced trial lawyer, a source familiar confirmed. The source said all the paperwork and retainer may not have been finalized just yet.
The shift in legal strategy and signals of potential cooperation with investigators come as Cohen feels increasingly isolated from the President, whom he has been famously loyal to for more than a decade. Last week, CNN reported Cohen has indicated a willingness to cooperate to alleviate pressure on himself and his family.
RELATED: Cohen signals openness to cooperating with federal investigators
"He feels let down by him and isolated by him," another friend of Cohen's told CNN. Cohen has famously said he would take a bullet for Trump and he has fashioned himself as Trump's "fixer," willing to help handle situations quietly. Cohen facilitated a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels weeks before the 2016 election to keep quiet her allegations of an affair a decade earlier with the then-candidate. The White House has denied any affair.
The mounting pressure on Cohen and his family since the April FBI raid of his home, hotel room and office has been weighing on him and his family, sources say. Cohen has not been charged with any wrongdoing but his attorneys have been combing through 3.7 million files and hundreds of encrypted messages that were swept up in the raid.
Several defense lawyers say that if Cohen is ultimately indicted, they don't expect him to be charged with any wrongdoing until the government completes its review of the evidence seized in the raid. The court-appointed special master overseeing the review of material for attorney-client privileged information said it could be completed as soon as June 25.
