Looking at the RCP averages for Trump's main competition right now (Liz Warren) you will see that in several "Registered Voter" polls that Warren leads by just under 4%. Now should Liz Warren take any comfort in the fact that she is leading the President? Not really. First and foremost, these polls will tighten once the "Registered Voter" concept is replace by "Likely Voter" polls. Year in and year out, your GOP candidate tend to do better as you reduce the number of fringe people from the polling samples.
But more to the point, Trump is already running campaign ads. A full 13 months prior to the election. He is doing so because he has the money (and knows he will continue to raise the money) necessary to launch an all out 13 month Presidential campaign. So far, Trump has been treating Pocahontas with kid gloves, likely because he wants her to be his opponent. But once it becomes clear who his actual opponent is, then watch the knives come out.
Trump has been attacked now for close to four years (since he started running for President). There is nothing left in the barrel short of accusing him of murdering young children and eating their dead bodies. But there is a whole slew of things that the Democratic nominee has not yet faced. If it's someone like Warren, well dropping 3-4 points is nothing.

Gordon Sondland, President Donald Trump's ambassador to the European Union, was scheduled to appear before a trio of committees Tuesday morning to answer questions about his role in pushing Ukraine's president to open investigations aimed at former Vice President Joe Biden.
But the State Department directed him not to cooperate with the probe, according to Sondland's attorney, Robert Luskin.
"Early this morning, the U.S. Department of State directed Ambassador Gordon Sondland not to appear today for his scheduled transcribed interview before the U.S. House of Representatives Joint Committee," Luskin said.
Luskin said Sondland had agreed "to appear voluntarily ... in order to answer the committee’s questions on an expedited basis." But as a sitting U.S. ambassador, he is required to follow the State Department’s directive, Luskin said.
Trump defended the decision to prevent Sondland's testimony, saying the Democrats' inquiry is illegitimate.
