We can save lives if we just tell everyone to stay home?

So now that the President's approvals have turned the corner on his handling of the coronavirus crisis, look for some really silly arguments to take hold on the left.

The latest argument that the desperate are trying to push is that the President will be sacrificing lives is he doesn't just shut everything down now! Waiting, it's being argued, could cost us lives!

Of course... if you don't let anyone leave the house, there will be no car accidents, there will be no muggings, there will be less murders. There will be nobody drinking and driving. Nobody will die doing dangerous activities such as rock climbing, motorcycle riding, or whitewater rafting. There will less deaths in our law enforcement or other dangerous jobs. Reduced stress will reduce heart problems. People will not catch the flu, or any contagious disease. Just think of how much less pollution will help with the mounting health issues of people associated with that.

Demanding everyone stay home would save countless lives in countless ways. An extremely small fraction of those saved lives would have anything to do with coronavirus.

So why doesn't the Governor of Illinois shut down the state over the amount of murders that are taking place? Why doesn't California shut down the state to reduce their pollution? Why doesn't New York City Mayor shut down everything in the city to save on crime, muggings, and murders?

Are all of these politicians killing people by not shutting down their states? Or does that criticism only apply to people named Trump?

Actually the new narrative is now he didn't do enough and ignored the crisis early on to contain the pandemic.

Mysteriously, a couple of "anonymous" intelligent officers have come out of the woodwork to say Trump was told of the pandemic dangers in January.

Must read.

Evidence over hysteria — COVID-19

A growing body of evidence indicates that COVID-19 transmission is facilitated in confined settings; for example, a large cluster (634 confirmed cases) of COVID-19 secondary infections occurred aboard a cruise ship in Japan, representing about one fifth of the persons aboard who were tested for the virus. This finding indicates the high transmissibility of COVID-19 in enclosed spaces

Take away; locking people down in their houses is exactly the wrong policy. The chances of getting COVID-19 in the open air is almost nil.

Due to COVID-19’s sensitivity to UV light and heat (just like the normal influenza virus), it is very likely that it will “burn off” as humidity increases and temperatures rise.

Released on March 10th, one study mapped COVID-19 virality capability by high temperature and high humidity. It found that both significantly reduced the ability of the virus to spread from person-to-person. From the study,

“This result is consistent with the fact that the high temperature and high humidity significantly reduce the transmission of influenza. It indicates that the arrival of summer and rainy season in the northern hemisphere can effectively reduce the transmission of the COVID-19.”

The University of Maryland mapped severe COVID-19 outbreaks with local weather patterns around the world, from the US to China. They found that the virus thrives in a certain temperature and humidity channel. “The researchers found that all cities experiencing significant outbreaks of COVID-19 have very similar winter climates with an average temperature of 41 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit, an average humidity level of 47% to 79% with a narrow east-west distribution along the same 30–50 N” latitude”, said the University of Maryland.

Take away: Closing Florida's beaches will do nothing to halt the spread o the virus and in fact may have accelerate as people are forced inside in confines places.

Now the spring break morons may still get the virus (along with an STD or two) but it won't be because they went to the beach.

As the higher temperatures and humidity move north during the late spring and early summer then the rate of infraction will drop dramatically.

to me, what stands as the most glaring evidence of joe's cognitive decline is his willingness to be used by the DNC as a throw away candidate in a year where the outcome of the election is likely a foregone conclusion.

i think DNC party apparatchiks long ago quietly admitted to themselves that the likelihood of a trump reelection is very high. but they had to participate and run someone, anyone, so who could it be?

he's being used like a $10 streetwalker as a placeholder while the DNC figures out who to run in 2024.

Ch UNtruth speciously argues that if the President would shut everything down lots of lives would be saved BUT---

So, Ch, be sure to tell all the governors of all the states to shut nothing down and then you just sit back and see what happens as state after state comes to resemble New York and and Oregon and Washington and California and New Jersey and Illinois and Florida and Michigan
and and and etc. as it consistently gets WORSE.

AND look at the chart showing how many cases are reported EACH DAY.

So far, no area of the USA has reported a LESSENING IN THE NUMBER of infections. WE HAVE NOT YET TURNED THE CORNER ON THIS, NOT REMOTELY.

And consider this:

Who Gets Care as Hospitals Fill Up?

New York Times:
“Medical leaders in Washington State, which has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in the country, have quietly begun preparing a bleak triage strategy to determine which patients may have to be denied complete medical care in the event that the health system becomes overwhelmed by the coronavirus in the coming weeks.

“Fearing a critical shortage of supplies, including the ventilators needed to help the most seriously ill patients breathe, state officials and hospital leaders held a conference call on Wednesday night to discuss the plans… The triage document, still under consideration, will assess factors such as age, health and likelihood of survival in determining who will get access to full care and who will merely be provided comfort care, with the EXPECTATION THAT THEY WILL DIE.”
_______

Our nation's woeful unpreparedness for this pandemic FORCES us to have to begin to make decisions such as these.

But you like Trump continue to try to play down the seriousness of what we are facing.

The Cure Might Be No Cure at All
March 21, 2020 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 50 Comments

Holman Jenkins: “In our coronavirus quandary, the cure may not only be worse than the disease. The cure is likely no cure at all. We might hold off an expected surge in coronavirus cases for two or three weeks with the kind of extraordinarily destructive economic lockdowns seen in California, New York and elsewhere. But unless warmer weather is coming to our rescue, Americans probably won’t accept the social devastation that would be inflicted by a five-month or 18-month campaign of virus suppression of the sort promoted, variously, by the U.K.’s Imperial College London, Germany’s Robert Koch Institute and other public-health think tanks.”

“Mandatory social distancing might well break down. (Look for speakeasies to re-emerge in New York and other shut-in cities.) The government might well face a choice of coercion or seeing its authority collapse. I’m not being alarmist.”

“This is a lesson the World Health Organization’s Bruce Aylward brought back from Wuhan. People with flu-like symptoms had to be isolated in dormitories, hospitals and stadiums. Asking them to self-isolate voluntarily didn’t work.”

When Trump Talks, Stocks Keep Tanking

Associated Press: “Over the course of the last eight days–all on which he held extended news conferences about the coronavirus response in the midst of trading — his comments haven’t stopped the bleeding. The Dow has lost more than 17% since March 13, and has plummeted more than 34% since the market hit an all-time high Feb. 19.”

“The president’s decision to offer daily affirmations to the health of the stock market, and the economy writ large, is not surprising. But no president has tied his fortunes to Wall Street more closely than Trump, who until the market crash bragged that the rising stock market was evidence of his success leading the economy.”

U.S. Economy Deteriorating Rapidly

“The U.S. economy is deteriorating more quickly than was expected just days ago as extraordinary measures designed to curb the coronavirus keep 84 million Americans penned in their homes and cause the near-total shutdown of most businesses,” the Wsshington Post reports.

“The resulting economic meltdown, which is sending several million workers streaming into the unemployment line, is outpacing the federal government’s efforts to respond.”

Trump’s Embrace of Unproven Drugs Defies Science
March 20, 2020 at 8:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 315 Comments

“At a long-winded White House briefing on Friday, President Trump enthusiastically and repeatedly promoted the promise of two long-used malaria drugs that are still unproven against the coronavirus, but being tested in clinical trials,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “I’m a smart guy. I feel good about it. And we’re going to see. You’re going to see soon enough.”

“But the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, delicately — yet forcefully — pushed back from the same stage, explaining that there was only anecdotal evidence that the drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, may be effective.”

U.S. Intelligence Warned About Likely Pandemic
March 20, 2020 at 8:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 159 Comments

“U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen,” the Washington Post reports.

“The intelligence reports didn’t predict when the virus might land on U.S. shores or recommend particular steps that public health officials should take, issues outside the purview of the intelligence agencies. But they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak.”

“Taken together, the reports and warnings painted an early picture of a virus that showed the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could require governments to take swift actions to contain it. But despite that constant flow of reporting, Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans.”

"James runs and hides again," says Commensa.

Nope, Commensa, I actually took the time to look up the impressive article from Medium.com that you cited at 7:11 AM written by Aaron Ginn. Ginn's article is long, detailed, claims to be based on objective facts, etc. etc. and is quite impressive and sounds pretty irrefutable.

It began to impress me a bit less, however, when I read how it ends (some definite bias there?) and also when I found out the following about Ginn:

Wikipedia
Aaron Ginn is a Silicon Valley technologist who has worked in Republican party politics in Silicon Valley.[3]

Ginn has contributed writing to Breitbart, TechCrunch, TheNextWeb, and Townhall on various subjects.[citation needed]

Career
Ginn worked as part of the digital team for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign. Following Romney's defeat, Ginn, Garrett Johnson, and Chris Abrams formed Lincoln Labs, an organization which arranged informal gatherings for conservatives in Silicon Valley, and aimed to improve the Republican party's use of technology and social media. The organization also organized hackathons, at least one of them funded by the Charles Koch Institute.[1] Prior to the 2016 presidential election, the group changed its name to Lincoln Initiative.[3] As of 2019 the organization uses the name Lincoln Network.[2]

From 2013 to 2015 Ginn was elected Associate Delegate Representative for the California Republican Party.
Ginn was the youngest elected member of the Executive Committee and Board of California.[citation needed]

In 2015, Ginn was appointed CTO of the California Young Republican Federation.[citation needed]

Awards
Ginn received the Direct Marketing News award "40 under 40" in 2015 for marketing achievements.[4]

Ginn was listed as one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in the "Law and Policy" category in 2017.[5]
