The August employment report made a strong showing, with the U.S. economy adding a greater than expected number of payrolls, but labor market observers say most of the recovery in the current climate has already been done and that further gains will be very difficult.
“This was an impressive report,” LPL Financial Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick wrote in a note. “But 8% unemployment is still 8% unemployment, so let’s not get too excited.”
The U.S. added 1.37 million payrolls last month, beating expectations of 1.35 million, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.4% — far below the 9.8% expected — and the first time since the pandemic where the unemployment rate hit single-digits.
“Today’s report is another sign that the recovery in the labor market is nearing the point of exhaustion,” wrote Charlie Ripley, senior investment strategist for Allianz Investment Management.
Jamie Cox, managing partner for Harris Financial Group, called the jobs numbers “solid’ in a release, but noted that “the next 2-3% of employment gains are going to be very tough because there is no total re-opening in sight.”
The sharp drop in U.S. unemployment in August was led by huge declines in unemployment among black men and Hispanic women.
Overall unemployment in the U.S. fell 1.8 percent points, from 10.2 percent to 8.4 percent, according to data released Friday. That was much better than the decline to 9.8 percent forecast by economists."

KANSAS CITY — Two southern Missouri men who said they traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to see President Donald Trump’s visit and proof of rioting face federal gun charges, according to a criminal complaint.
The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin charged 40-year-old Michael M. Karmo and 33-year-old Cody E. Smith with illegally possessing firearms at a hotel near Kenosha, in Pleasant Prairie.

Karmo told FBI agents he and Smith were part of the 417 Second Amendment Militia and planned next to go to Portland, Oregon, to see for themselves what was going on. Karmo allegedly said that he would be willing to “take action” if police were defunded.
Both men were prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to prior convictions. Karmo has prior felony convictions. Smith has a prior misdemeanor domestic battery conviction and acknowledged regular drug use, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Karmo is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Smith is charged with aiding and abetting a felon’s possession of firearms and two counts of possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person.
According to the complaint, the FBI arrested the two roommates from Hartville, Missouri, after law enforcement officials received a tip that the men had traveled to Kenosha armed with firearms allegedly to loot and possibly “pick people off.”
