So now that the election is over...

Democrats and liberals actually admit that Antifa is real, dangerous, and needs to be stopped?

So the only real question here is whether liberals are dishonest, stupid, or both? Obviously Antifa existed prior to the election in spite of continued arguments that there was no Antifa movement and that the real issue was White supremacy. Obviously all of the destruction done in Mpls, Portland, Seattle, and other cities was the direct result of Antifa efforts. It was never anyone else. It was always planned and organized and it never was about White Supremacist.

But it was never obvious to Joe Biden (who either lied to America's face or was actually dumb enough to believe all of the violence was really from Trump supporters) or other Democrats. Democrats have become the Party of the Dumb and proud of it!

McConnell Loses Control
10:33 am
Playbook:
“The speaker’s vote intrigue is being overshadowed by an all-out GOP civil war in the Senate. Three days after Mitch McConnell told his colleagues that the vote to certify the presidential election results on Jan. 6 would be ‘the most consequential I have ever cast,’ a dozen Republican senators have now publicly endorsed objecting to the Electoral College tallies that will make Joe Biden’s victory official.

“In short, there’s a growing rebellion inside the GOP conference instigated by President Donald Trump, who promises more GOP senators will join the effort and also called for mass protests in D.C. on Wednesday. (Yes, the Proud Boys and right-wing militias will be there, and, yes, there is cause for concern about the prospect of violence.)

“We can’t say this emphatically enough: This does not happen to Mitch McConnell. For four years, the Senate leader has managed to maintain order in his ranks as Trump unleashes daily mayhem on the GOP from the White House. That’s all gone to hell.”

SINCE LOSING reelection, President Trump has failed to overturn the results. But his post-election tantrum, not to mention his behavior before now, has magnified legitimate concerns about weaknesses in the nation’s democratic institutions. Mr. Trump lost the electoral college by a secure margin. What if he hadn’t? What will happen when a wanton president, an out-of-control state legislature or a hyper-partisan congressional majority sees a riper opportunity, based on a cockamamie legal theory or bad-faith execution of its duties, to reject the will of the voters?
In short, Mr. Trump and a disturbing number of Republican officials have made obsolete the old assumptions that each major party will play fair, that electoral results will reflect the will of the majority and that each side will willingly turn over power when defeated at the polls. The nation needs a top-to-bottom review of how it conducts elections, counts votes and assures the public of the democracy’s health, so that it resists those who want to restrict voting, trash legitimate ballots and leverage positions of trust to upend valid results. Among President-elect Joe Biden’s first acts should be to convene a high-level commission to recommend a democracy overhaul.
January 02 at 7:00 AM PST
Opinion by the Editorial Board
The Post's View
Opinion: The U.S. needs a democracy overhaul. Here’s what Biden’s first step should be.
The review must be wide-ranging, beginning with the electoral college itself. The commission should examine ways to reduce the chance that a candidate can win the presidency without winning a majority of popular votes, or for a tied electoral college vote to be decided by the House. Maybe the cleanest way is simply to abolish the electoral college in favor of a straight national popular vote. Or maybe there is another idea — such as proportional allocation of electoral college votes between the top two candidates in each state — that makes more sense.
The commission should look at encouraging more voter participation. That could mean universal voter registration, which would make the process less arduous but potentially more secure, or making Election Day a holiday. Or perhaps mail-in balloting should be expanded, along with ditching signature-matching for more sophisticated methods of verifying voters’ identities. The commission could even review how mandatory voting has worked in places such as Australia.
A clearheaded review of ballot security could recommend smart ways to prevent fraud and promote voter confidence, while nixing measures that are more burdensome than helpful, such as strict voter-ID laws.

House GOP Strategizes Over Electoral Vote Challenge
10:35 am
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) told Fox News that House Republicans held a rare Saturday night conference call to address their goal of overturning certain state’s Electoral College results on Jan. 6.

Brooks said 50 lawmakers including Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), President Trump and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows were on the call.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Some states and cities are experimenting with ranked-choice voting, which deserves more attention. This promising reform could eliminate the threat of third-party spoilers throwing elections to candidates most voters dislike.
Voters must be assured that their ballots are secure from malicious actors and administration incompetence alike. That means stronger national standards — and federal money — for voting equipment, staff and support, including stipulations on using statistically sound methods to audit vote counts. Simple changes — such as paying poll workers more, training them better, opening better-organized polling places more often and for longer, keeping better records, buying better machines — can make substantial differences in voters’ experience.
Americans should also have confidence that partisan officials will not be able to reject voting results. Internationally, the United States is unusual in that its chief voting administrators — state secretaries of state — are partisan elected officials. Mr. Trump has raised the specter of state legislatures assigning electoral college votes to their favored candidates or of partisan-influenced state canvassing boards failing to certify legitimate vote totals. The commission must find ways to reduce the possibility of partisan interference in the democratic process. For example, secretaries of state might be barred from running for higher office for a certain number of years or go through an accreditation process.

Finally, Americans should never again have to dig up rickety old laws to determine whether arcane electoral college counting procedures might offer federal lawmakers a route to overturning a presidential election by congressional vote. The commission should recommend a thorough update of the 1887 Electoral Count Act that eliminates the possibility that a partisan Congress could reject properly certified electoral votes, as Mr. Trump would like to see happen on Jan. 6.
There is much more that a democracy commission could consider. The nation’s democratic system, wounded and exposed from a rough 2020, cannot limp into 2024 in comparable or worse shape. Many of the questions raised in the past several weeks are not ones most Americans previously imagined they needed to contemplate. But they are now arguably the most important issues facing the country as it reckons with the Trump era.

I support an amendment making the Presidential election a popular vote system. With a voter national valuation system, that would make gerrymandering irrelevant in the Presidential election cycle.

Protesters arrested after the May 25 death of George Floyd were a diverse, young group of people who demonstrated close to home and were charged largely with nonviolent crimes, according to a Washington Post review of data on more than 2,600 people detained in 15 cities.

The data contradicts suggestions by President Trump and other officials that those who took to the streets were mostly agitators from out-of-town, committing felonious acts.

Floyd’s death while in the custody of Minneapolis police launched one of the largest waves of civil unrest — and arrests — in the nation since the Vietnam War. In the first two weeks, police arrested more than 17,000 people in the 50 largest cities that had organized protests, according to a Post survey of news releases, arrest reports and aggregate data provided by police.

Details of those arrests are not available in most of the cities, though they are widely presumed to be a public record. A patchwork of state record laws and police reporting practices has shielded them from scrutiny.

The Post’s analysis found the overwhelming majority arrested in those 15 cities — 2,059 of the 2,652 — were accused of nonviolent misdemeanors, most on charges of violating curfew or emergency orders.

Almost 22 percent — 582 — were charged with crimes related to violence or the threat of violence to people, businesses or property. These included misdemeanor or felony charges related to rioting, burglary, looting, attempted murder, assault on police, weapons and arson. The remaining 11 cases of the 2,652 were nonviolent felonies, including parole violations, drug charges and driving while intoxicated.
It was not a nation wide attempt to commit dissention.

No ranked choice voting does not work. That vote in Maine a couple years ago showed that.

One candidate was the top vote getter but didn't reach a majority. So the rank kicked in and another candidate won based on greater 2nd place ranking.

C.H. Truth said...

Ranked voting in Georgia would have likely made Perdue the winner and the Libertarian candidate was the only reason he didn't make 50%. In many states, the Libertarian was the only other choice.

Interesting that now that Green Party candidates are so last decade, that the push for ranked voting has died down from liberals. It was a great idea when they believed Ralph Nader and others were costing them victories. But the "concept" is not quite the same when it's not a benefit.

Do what they really want is business as usual?

Leader McConnell would seem to have more than a whiff of that.

But the rest do not have to go along. Do they need a reminder the Democrats protested the electoral college certification of the last three Republican presidents—-Trump in 2016 and George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004?

There’s nothing new in this, except maybe the search for the truth in what happened and the promise of a better tomorrow.

And that truth is bigger than Donald Trump, larger than life though he may sometimes be, much bigger.

It speaks to the nature of what we are as a functioning democratic republic. Can we actually have elections the majority of the public trusts? They clearly don’t trust this one.

The Republicans should remove Moscow Mitch from the leadership position!

Not in 2000...

In 2020, Perdue beat Ossoff by over 80,000 votes, but came up around 15,000 short of 50%. The Libertarian got 140,000 votes. There was no Green Party candidate on the ballot.

Democrats had successfully went to court and prevented the Green Party from being on the ballot in many Battleground states. One of the many things that they did long before election day to help provide them with advantages.

I know it is a highly controversial issue, but given the fact that three Republican Presidential candidates have lost the popular vote. Plus it will make it safer way to conduct our most important and the only national election.

ACCEPTING THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTE, OR NOT.

Senator Josh Hawley has said that he will vote against accepting the reported Electoral College vote in the joint session of Congress next week, and a number of Republican House members will do the same. Some reports say that 140 or more GOP House members will vote to reject the Electoral College tally in one or more states. As I understand it, if there are objections in both houses, the House and Senate are required to retire separately to debate the grounds for the objections, which will give Republicans an opportunity to air their voter fraud grievances.

Democrats have gone ballistic over this news, with “sedition” being one of their milder characterizations of Republican skepticism of official election results. Of course, it was not always so. In the past, Democrats have objected to Electoral College results on the flimsiest possible grounds. RedState has a good summary.

In 2001, 2005 and 2017, Democratic Representatives and, in 2005, Senators voted against accepting the Electoral College tally. Thus, every Republican president since George H. W. Bush has seen Democrats vote against accepting the legitimacy of his election.

That’s different, because shut up.

In 2019 there was no COVID-19: the total number of deaths in US was 2,854,838.

The death toll is at 2,913,144 after the December 31th update. It will go higher since death certificates can take up to a few weeks to be finalized. I could see it going as high 3.1 million which would be about a 8% or 9% increase in deaths from last year. But I think it may be more realistic to figure it will end around 3.05 or 3.06 (7% increase).

If you just add the number of Covid deaths right now to the amount of deaths we had last year, we should be sitting at nearly 3.2 million dead. That's if there was no "other" increase in any other types of deaths. We are going to come in well short of that number.

That is the fallacy of the percentage of expected deaths (which they currently show as 12%). In order for us to be at 12% of expected deaths the number of expected deaths would have been considerably "less" than we had the past two years.

An easy manipulation that 99% of the general public would never question or bother to fact check.

Because of what you’ve done to the president, a lot of people aren’t going out to vote, and a lot of Republicans are going to vote negative, because they hate what you did to the president," the president told Raffensperger, before adding that the Republican official would be "respected, really respected, if this can be straightened out before the election.”

The audio is the first actual evidence of the president's attempts to directly pressure a state official to overturn the results of the 2020 election, though he has called for Georgia officials including Gov. Brian Kemp (R) to call a special legislative session for the purpose of overturning the state's results on Twitter in recent weeks. He has also publicly called for Kemp to resign.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

President Trump urged fellow Republican Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia secretary of state, to “find” enough votes to overturn his defeat in an extraordinary one-hour phone call Saturday that election experts said raised legal questions.
The Washington Post obtained a recording of the conversation in which Trump alternately berated Raffensperger, tried to flatter him, begged him to act and threatened him with vague criminal consequences if the secretary of state refused to pursue his false claims, at one point warning that Raffensperger was taking “a big risk.”
Throughout the call, Raffensperger and his office’s general counsel rejected Trump’s assertions, explaining that the president is relying on debunked conspiracy theories and that President-elect Joe Biden’s 11,779-vote victory in Georgia was fair and accurate.
Trump dismissed their arguments.
“The people of Georgia are angry, the people in the country are angry,” he said. “And there’s nothing wrong with saying, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated.”
Raffensperger responded: “Well, Mr. President, the challenge that you have is, the data you have is wrong.”
[Election results under attack: Here are the facts]

At another point, Trump said: “So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.”
The rambling and at times incoherent conversation offered a remarkable glimpse of how consumed and desperate the president remains about his loss,
unwilling or unable to let the matter go and still believing he can reverse the results in enough battleground states to remain in office.

ROFL

Scott the medical expert will not see the President is insane.

Trump did most of the talking on the call. He was angry and impatient, calling Raffensperger a “child” and “either dishonest or incompetent” for not believing there was widespread ballot fraud in Atlanta — and twice calling himself a “schmuck” for endorsing Kemp, whom Trump holds in particular contempt for not embracing his claims of fraud.
“I can’t imagine he’s ever getting elected again, I’ll tell you that much right now,” he said.
He also took aim at Kemp’s 2018 opponent, Democrat Stacey Abrams, trying to shame Raffensperger with the idea that his refusal to embrace fraud has helped her and Democrats generally. “Stacey Abrams is laughing about you,” he said. “She’s going around saying, ‘These guys are dumber than a rock.’ What she’s done to this party is unbelievable, I tell you.”
The secretary of state repeatedly sought to push back, saying at one point, “Mr. President, the problem you have with social media, that — people can say anything.”
“Oh this isn’t social media,” Trump retorted. “This is Trump media. It’s not social media. It’s really not. It’s not social media. I don’t care about social media. I couldn’t care less.”
At another point, Trump claimed that votes were scanned three times: “Brad, why did they put the votes in three times? You know, they put ’em in three times.”
Raffensperger responded: “Mr. President, they did not. We did an audit of that and we proved conclusively that they were not scanned three times.”
Trump sounded at turns confused and meandering. At one point, he referred to Kemp as “George.” He tossed out several different figures for Biden’s margin of victory in Georgia and referred to the Senate runoff, which is Tuesday, as happening “tomorrow” and “Monday.”
His desperation was perhaps most pronounced during an exchange with Germany, Raffensperger’s general counsel, in which he openly begged for validation.
Trump: “Do you think it’s possible that they shredded ballots in Fulton County? ’Cause that’s what the rumor is. And also that Dominion took out machines. That Dominion is really moving fast to get rid of their, uh, machinery. Do you know anything about that? Because that’s illegal.”
Germany responded: “No, Dominion has not moved any machinery out of Fulton County.”
Trump: “But have they moved the inner parts of the machines and replaced them with other parts?”
Germany: “No.”
Trump: “Are you sure? Ryan?”
Germany: “I’m sure. I’m sure, Mr. President.”
It was clear from the call that Trump has surrounded himself with aides who have fed his false perceptions that the election was stolen. When he claimed that more than 5,000 ballots were cast in Georgia in the name of dead people, Raffensperger responded forcefully: “The actual number was two. Two. Two people that were dead that voted.”
But later, Meadows said, “I can promise you there are more than that.”
Another Trump lawyer on the call, Kurt Hilbert, accused Raffensperger’s office of refusing to turn over data to assess evidence of fraud, and also claimed awareness of at least 24,000 illegally cast ballots that would flip the result to Trump.
“It stands to reason that if the information is not forthcoming, there’s something to hide,” Hilbert said. “That’s the problem that we have.”
Reached by phone Sunday, Hilbert declined to comment.
In the end, Trump asked Germany to sit down with one of his attorneys to go over the allegations. Germany agreed.
Yet Trump also recognized that he was failing to persuade Raffensperger or Germany of anything, saying toward the end, “I know this phone call is going nowhere.”
But he continued to make his case in repetitive fashion, until finally, after roughly an hour, Raffensperger put an end to the conversation: “Thank you, President Trump, for your time.”

'I just want to find 11,780 votes':

Trump attacks Georgia officials as crucial runoffs approach

Yahoo News
1:03 PM
ATLANTA — Just two days before the Georgia runoffs that will determine the leadership of the Senate and one day before a rally on behalf of the Republican candidates, President Trump has continued to unload on the GOP officials leading the state.

In an extraordinary development, Trump attempted to cajole Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, according to the Washington Post, which published audio of their call on Sunday.

“So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,” Trump told Raffensperger, laying bare his overriding goal of overturning the November election results.

President-elect Joe Biden won Georgia on Nov. 3, the first time the state had gone for a Democratic candidate since 1992. Despite three vote recounts, Trump has continued to insist that the voting was tainted, casting a wide range of allegations without any credible evidence to back up his assertions.

Trump continued to attack Raffensperger while addressing their call hours before the Post published the audio.

“I spoke to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger yesterday about Fulton County and voter fraud in Georgia,” Trump tweeted. “He was unwilling, or unable, to answer questions such as the ‘ballots under table’ scam, ballot destruction, out of state ‘voters,’ dead voters, and more. He has no clue!”

“Respectfully, President Trump,” Raffensperger replied on Twitter, “What you're saying is not true. The truth will come out.”

On Sunday afternoon, the truth did come out in the form of the Post publishing audio of the conversation. In the course of the call, Trump attempted on multiple occasions to induce Raffensperger to change the results of the election, one way or another.

“The people of Georgia are angry, the people in the country are angry,” Trump said. “And there’s nothing wrong with saying, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated.”

“Well, Mr. President,” Raffensperger responded, “the challenge that you have is, the data you have is wrong.”

Trump’s extraordinary attacks on Georgia’s electoral process come at a particularly perilous time for Republicans, who are seeking to maintain their majority in the Senate. Incumbent GOP Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler are in tight races against Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock, respectively.

If Republicans win either of the two races, they’ll keep their Senate majority and the ability to constrain Biden’s agenda and key nominees. If Democrats win both races, the Senate will be split 50-50, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris breaking the tie in the party’s favor.

Trump’s focus on his electoral loss in Georgia has forced Loeffler and Perdue to walk a rhetorical tightrope, trying to woo voters to return to the polls while not actively countering Trump’s claims that Georgia’s election system can’t be trusted. And Trump has shown no signs of relenting in his criticism of the state’s electoral process.

“Republicans in Georgia must be careful of the political corruption in Fulton County, which is rampant,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “The Governor, @BrianKempGA, and his puppet Lt. Governor, @GeoffDuncanGA, have done less than nothing. They are a disgrace to the great people of Georgia!”

There are nevertheless signs that the Republican candidates are trying to put some daylight between themselves and Trump. Loeffler’s statewide December barnstorming tour, for instance, was called the “Senate Firewall Tour” — a concept that appears to accept the reality of the incoming Biden administration and Harris’s potential tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

More significantly, neither Loeffler nor Perdue has signed on to an effort by nearly a dozen Republican senators to oppose certification of election results.

Trump noticed, retweeting a call for the two Republicans to join him:
“Why are my own #GA Senators @KLoeffler & @Perduesenate not supporting this effort?”

BECAUSE IT'S NOT TRUE, DUNCE!

Trump is set to speak Monday night in Dalton, Ga., in support of Loeffler and Perdue. But in his previous rally in December, Trump spent little time whipping up enthusiasm for the candidates, instead focusing on himself and his electoral loss.

IT'S ALL ABOUT HIM.

The president’s supporters have gone so far as to tell Republicans not to vote in the election in order to expose the alleged corruption in the system. Billboards around Georgia have appeared with Loeffler and Perdue’s photos and the accompanying slogan “Perdue/Loeffler didn’t deliver for Trump. DON’T deliver for them.”

Trump seemed to feed into that on his call with Raffensperger. “You have a big election coming up and because of what you’ve done to the president — you know, the people of Georgia know that this was a scam,” he said. “Because of what you’ve done to the president, a lot of people aren’t going out to vote, and a lot of Republicans are going to vote negative, because they hate what you did to the president. OK? They hate it. And they’re going to vote. And you would be respected, really respected, if this can be straightened out before the election.”

Multiple Republican voters interviewed by Yahoo News over the course of the campaign have indicated that they intended to vote, but not without some trepidation.

How do you think I'm going to get along

Listen: Trump caught on tape threatening Raffensperger and demanding state 'find' votes to overturn Biden win

In an hour-long phone call on Saturday, Donald Trump demanded that Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger commit multiple crimes in order to overturn the results of the state's presidential election. It is the latest and most shocking yet of Trump's efforts to retain power regardless of which laws must be broken, and it is all on tape.

The Washington Post obtained the recording of Trump's call to Raffensberger, and reports that Trump "alternately berated Raffensperger, tried to flatter him, begged him to act and threatened him with vague criminal consequences if the secretary of state refused to pursue his false claims."

Trump urged Raffensperger to announce that he had "recalculated" the election results. There is little way to interpret the conversation other than a request by Trump for the state's election office to commit an unambiguous act of fraud.

"So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state," Trump said. At another point, he said that it would be a "criminal offense" if Raffensperger and his office did not back up Trump's false claims of ballot destruction, and a "big risk to you and [state legal counsel Ryan Germany]."
TALK ABOUT CHUTZPAH!

Though Trump's conversation would appear to constitute a criminal act, lawyer Cleta Mitchell and chief of staff Mark Meadows were also on the line; neither voiced objections to Trump's demands.

Asking that an election be fraudulently overturned is unquestionably a violation of Trump's oath of office and an impeachable act. Trump and his top advisers have crossed every line: endorsing fraud, encouraging sedition, and demanding the toppling of government. It is unforgivable, and every Republican who stands with him is betraying this nation.

The former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan must be a RINO!

WASHINGTON – Former House Speaker Paul Ryan excoriated fellow Republicans Sunday in a rare statement that called planned GOP efforts to challenge President-elect Joe Biden's win "anti-democratic and anti-conservative."

Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin who served as House Speaker from 2015 to 2019, has seldom weighed in on events since leaving office, but issued a lengthy statement decrying Republican plans to object to certifying the Electoral College results in a joint session of Congress on Wednesday. Twelve incoming and sitting Republican senators and dozens of GOP House members plan to object to the count over President Donald Trump's baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.

"Efforts to reject the votes of the Electoral College and sow doubt about Joe Biden’s victory strike at the foundation of our republic," Ryan said in a statement. "It is difficult to conceive of a more anti-democratic and anti-conservative act than a federal intervention to overturn the results of state-certified elections and disenfranchise millions of Americans. The fact that this effort will fail does not mean it will not do significant damage to American democracy."

Ryan asked fellow conservatives to think about the "precedent that it would set" and noted the Trump campaign's failed efforts in the court to challenge election results in a number of states.

Trump is a crazy mothrf***r

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

He will probably pardon himself before January 20th. A lot of lawyers argued that it might not stand.

Trump’s actions could constitute election fraud. Section 52 of the U.S. Code concerns voting and elections, and provides for a sentence of up to five years for:

“A person, including an election official, who in any election for Federal office

(1) knowingly and willfully intimidates, threatens, or coerces, or attempts to intimidate, threaten, or coerce, any person for-

(A) registering to vote, or voting, or attempting to register or vote;

(B) urging or aiding any person to register to vote, to vote, or to attempt to register or vote; or

(C) exercising any right under this chapter; or

(2) knowingly and willfully deprives, defrauds, or attempts to deprive or defraud the residents of a State of a fair and impartially conducted election process, by

(A) the procurement or submission of voter registration applications that are known by the person to be materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent under the laws of the State in which the election is held; or

(B) the procurement, casting, or tabulation of ballots that are known by the person to be materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent under the laws of the State in which the election is held.”

Trump’s citing possible criminal charges for Raffensperger unless he produces a different election result in Georgia could be seen as extortion, which section 18, chapter 41 of the U.S. code expressly prohibits.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This is the fire Republicans are playing with, no matter their political calculation. Some may figure the vote Wednesday is merely symbolic; they can show solidarity with Mr. Trump’s voters and dodge a primary challenge in 2022. Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz are making their own presidential calculations for 2024. But the cost of this showboating will be more political cynicism, and a precedent that Democrats are sure to exploit in the aftermath of some future close election.

***

This is also a lousy political strategy for returning to power. By indulging Mr. Trump, Republicans are helping him divide the party and remain as a potential kingmaker. This could hurt what should be their very good chance to retake the House in 2022. As for 2024, good luck trying to court his support. He could run again for the nomination or, if he lost, run out of spite as a third-party candidate and guarantee a victory for Kamala Harris.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Wall Street Journal, wishes the Republican party should "divorce" from Trump. But if this blog represents the Trumpublican party, they will call these people Never Trumpers .

The good news is that many Republicans have been willing to stand up for proper constitutional conservatism. That includes the Federalist Society judges appointed by Mr. Trump who have made independent rulings based on the evidence. They have made their Democratic critics look foolish. Republicans in state legislatures have also stood on principle.

Credit as well to Senators Mitch McConnell, John Thune, Ben Sasse, Roger Wicker, Mr. Toomey, among others, who seem poised to support the election result as the Constitution advises. Their votes this week will look even better in the long light of history.

Trump Call to Georgia Official Might Violate Laws

“The call by President Trump on Saturday to Georgia’s secretary of state raised the prospect that Mr. Trump may have violated laws that prohibit interference in federal or state elections, but lawyers said on Sunday that it would be difficult to pursue such a charge,” the New York Times reports.

GOP Lawmaker Challenges Seating of Colleagues
“Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) on Sunday challenged the seating of lawmakers from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” The Hill reports.

“Roy — one of the few conservatives not backing the effort to challenge the results of the presidential election on Jan. 6 — argued that if there was widespread voter fraud to the level that it would change the presidential election results, as many of his colleagues claim, the legitimacy of results down ballot are also called into question.”

Trump Knows No Limits as He Tries to Overturn Election
Dan Balz:
“There are but 16 days left in President Trump’s term, but there is no doubt that he will use all of his remaining time in office to inflict as much damage as he can on democracy — with members of a now-divided Republican Party acting as enablers.

“Trump will never let this go, not between now and the day he is forced to give up the office and Biden is sworn in, not in the days and weeks and months after that. That he is on a mission is evident, but to what end, other than to avoid the ignominious label of ‘loser’ after a single term in the White House? That, at least, is consistent with the behavior he has exhibited throughout the four years of his presidency. He cares nothing about collateral damage to democracy.

“The president, however, is not on this mission alone. Instead, he continues to gather support from members of a party he has remade in his own image.”

President Donald Trump pressuring Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find me 11,780 votes,” but most GOP lawmakers remained silent on Sunday as their Democratic colleagues condemned the “immoral” effort to reverse his election defeat to President-elect Joe Biden.

In an hour-long recording of a call on Saturday afternoon, obtained by the Washington Post, Trump aggressively attempted to persuade Raffensperger, a Republican, to find him enough votes to overturn the Georgia election in his favor. The president threatened the official, begged, flattered and warned that he would be taking a “big risk” if he refused to help his efforts at securing re-election.

The conversation heated up after Raffensperger denied the president’s request, explained that his allegations of voter fraud had been debunked, and asserted that Biden won fairly.

“The people of Georgia are angry, the people in the country are angry,” Trump told the official. “And there’s nothing wrong with saying, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated.”

“All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes…Because we won the state.”

A few Republicans quickly condemned Trump’s behavior, but most GOP lawmakers in Congress have kept quiet. Others defended the president and criticized the release of his “confidential” phone call.

“This is absolutely appalling,” tweeted Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois. “To every member of Congress considering objecting to the election results, you cannot—in light of this—do so with a clean conscience. #RestoreOurGOP”

“Republicans, there is no defense for this. None,” former Arizona GOP Senator Jeff Flake tweeted.

Former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, who’s currently chairman of the Texas Forever Forward PAC, accused Trump of “trying to dismantle our democracy by seeking to invalidate an election he lost” following reports of the call.

“Anyone who supports this effort is demonstrating a disregard for the U.S. Constitution, the will of the American people, the sanctity of the electoral process, and the rule of law,” he said.

Errol Webber, a Republican candidate for governor of California, called the release of the “confidential” Trump phone conversation “illegal.”

Full Audio And Transcript Of Trump-Raffensperger Call-WAPO Misled About What Trump Said

After first saying they wouldn’t, the Washington Post released the full recording and transcript of President Trump’s conference call with Georgia secretary of state Raffensperger. What is clear is that the Washington Post selectively edited their initial release and gave it a misleading headline, ‘I just want to find 11,780 votes’: In extraordinary hour-long call, Trump pressures Georgia secretary of state to recalculate the vote in his favor.” Now that you can see the full transcript below what becomes obvious is that Trump was not asking Raffensberger to cheat or commit voter fraud. He went over each of the claims of miscounting and voter fraud in Georgia and asked the Secretary of State to explain why he didn’t believe them to be legitimate: Trump Raffensperger call

On the line with the president were White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and several lawyers, including longtime conservative attorney Cleta Mitchell and Georgia-based attorney Kurt Hilbert. Raffensperger was joined by his office’s general counsel, Ryan Germany, and Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs.

Below is the audio of the full call and the transcript.

Georgia Republican chairman David Shafer later announced that President Trump and his team filed two lawsuits against Secretary of State Raffensperger.

David Shafer: President Donald Trump has filed two lawsuits – federal and state – against Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. This was after Raffensperger secretly recorded the “confidential settlement discussion” of that litigation that is still pending. The audio published by the Washington Post is heavily edited and omits the stipulation that all discussions were for the purpose of settling litigation and confidential under federal and state law.

Dirtbag Brad Raffensperger is in serious trouble.

LOL:

The Democrat congressmen invited to give the invocation for the opening of the 117th U.S. Congress is making the rounds on social media for concluding his prayer in…well, a highly unusual way.

And by “unusual,” I mean “unusually stupid.”

Democrat Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a United Methodist pastor and the representative for Missouri’s 5th District, concluded his prayer by dedicating it "in the name of the monotheistic God, Brahama, and god known by many names by many different things,” with “Brahama” referring to the primary creator god in Hinduism.

He then bizarrely finished his prayer with “Amen…and a woman.”

For those who don’t know, “amen” has nothing to do with men, or gender at all, but simply translates to “so be it.”

If you were hoping this Congress might have a few more brain cells than the last, sorry to disappoint. Welcome to 2021.

Ashton Carter, Dick Cheney, William Cohen, Mark Esper, Robert Gates, Chuck Hagel, James Mattis, Leon Panetta, William Perry and Donald Rumsfeld are the 10 living former U.S. secretaries of defense.
As former secretaries of defense, we hold a common view of the solemn obligations of the U.S. armed forces and the Defense Department. Each of us swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We did not swear it to an individual or a party.

American elections and the peaceful transfers of power that result are hallmarks of our democracy. With one singular and tragic exception that cost the lives of more Americans than all of our other wars combined, the United States has had an unbroken record of such transitions since 1789, including in times of partisan strife, war, epidemics and economic depression. This year should be no exception.

Our elections have occurred. Recounts and audits have been conducted. Appropriate challenges have been addressed by the courts. Governors have certified the results. And the electoral college has voted. The time for questioning the results has passed; the time for the formal counting of the electoral college votes, as prescribed in the Constitution and statute, has arrived.

As senior Defense Department leaders have noted, “there’s no role for the U.S. military in determining the outcome of a U.S. election.” Efforts to involve the U.S. armed forces in resolving election disputes would take us into dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory. Civilian and military officials who direct or carry out such measures would be accountable, including potentially facing criminal penalties, for the grave consequences of their actions on our republic.

Transitions, which all of us have experienced, are a crucial part of the successful transfer of power. They often occur at times of international uncertainty about U.S. national security policy and posture. They can be a moment when the nation is vulnerable to actions by adversaries seeking to take advantage of the situation.

Given these factors, particularly at a time when U.S. forces are engaged in active operations around the world, it is all the more imperative that the transition at the Defense Department be carried out fully, cooperatively and transparently. Acting defense secretary Christopher C. Miller and his subordinates — political appointees, officers and civil servants — are each bound by oath, law and precedent to facilitate the entry into office of the incoming administration, and to do so wholeheartedly. They must also refrain from any political actions that undermine the results of the election or hinder the success of the new team.
We call upon them, in the strongest terms, to do as so many generations of Americans have done before them. This final action is in keeping with the highest traditions and professionalism of the U.S. armed forces, and the history of democratic transition in our great country.

“Prestwick airport has been told to expect the arrival of a US military Boeing 757 aircraft, that is occasionally used by Trump, on January 19 – the day before his Democratic rival takes charge at the White House.”

“Speculation surrounding Trump’s plans has been fuelled by the activity of US Army aircraft, which were based at Prestwick airport for a week and said to be carrying out 3D reconnaissance of the president’s Turnberry resort.”

How appropriate!,

Trump not only attempted to erase Black votes after they were cast, he attempted to suppress them before they were cast. This is nothing new among conservatives, but Trump has dragged the practice out of the back rooms and into the light of day once again, giving it a telegenic, digitally contagious persona.

And the Republican Party, or at least large portions of it, seems to have embraced Trump’s approach of making voter suppression a front-and-center, out-in-the-open central tenet of their electoral strategy.

As Eric Levitz pointed out in New York Magazine: “The G.O.P. is now a party that has no compunction about nullifying the voting rights of its opposition to retain power. And once a party has liberated itself from the shackles of respecting its detractors’ rights, much else becomes permissible.”
