Trump support rebounds after acquittal

Poll: GOP Support For Trump Rebounds After Acquittal As He Leads 2024 Field By 40 Points

Now we can see why Democrats are desperate to figure out a way to stop Trump from running again in 2024. The concept that Republicans would have run away from the former President because Democrats impeached him was always wishful thinking by the left, carried by silly fake journalism by the same old liberal creatures who suggest that they know what is best for the GOP.

Now one could certainly make an argument that Democrats should favor the idea of a rematch with Trump, but I suspect that this is not the case.  First, nobody knows who the Democrats will throw up there. It might be Biden, but he will be 81 years old when the next election season comes around. He already is showing signs of wear, and that is after just a few weeks in office. But if it is not Biden, then Democrats open themselves up for a grueling primary season.

Of course, nobody knows where things will stand in 2023 or 2024. I strongly suspect that if we are not back to the point economically that we were under Trump and prior to Covid, that there will be a lot of questions. Moreover, there are way more things that can go "wrong" in a county than can go "right".  We literally had four years of peace under Trump. Not only was their no military conflicts to mention, but there were multiple peace agreements brokered. What happens if a war breaks out somewhere that we are forced to deal with one way or the other. China, Russian, Iran, India all seem hellbent right now to flex some muscles. How will Biden respond?

Bottom line: if things are going well. We have peace and prosperity, then it might not matter who the GOP puts up. If we have problems and people are uneasy, then anything is possible. But if someone like Trump can come in, dominate the primaries, raise a lot of money, and sit and wait out a Democratic primary fight, it might just be exactly what the GOP needs. He has experience and if he is willing to learn from mistakes, he could be more than just a formidable candidate. He could be favored.

Tucker Carlson speaking on Fox News, 15 February, 2021

((Fox News))
Fox News host Tucker Carlson is pointing the finger at “green energy” for widespread power outages in Texas during winter storm Uri - despite evidence to the contrary.

The Lone Star state is under a state of emergency after freezing conditions swept the region in the past week, causing dangerously icy roads and leaving more than 4.3 million people without power as of Tuesday.

Texas’s energy provider, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), has implemented rolling blackouts to allow the grid to cope with extra demand caused by the freezing temperatures.

During his Fox News show on Monday, Mr Carlson attempted to blame renewable energy sources, including wind turbines, for the power outages affecting Texas along with several other southern states.

The Fox star criticized Texas for rapidly implementing renewables over the last 15 years, instead of using Texas’s “huge natural gas deposits”. (The state got almost a quarter of its energy in 2020 from wind power, the second largest source after natural gas).

“So it was all working great until the day it got cold outside. The windmills failed like the silly fashion accessories they are, and people in Texas died,” he said.

The deaths of at least five people in Texas have been linked to the storm. Four are suspected to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after attempting to heat their homes using cars, while a 78-year-old man died after he fell to the ground and was stuck in the cold for two hours, according to CBS News.

Mr Carlson continued: “Green energy inevitably means blackouts. Someday that may change as technology progresses, but as of right now and given the current state of technology, green energy means a less reliable power grid.”

“It means failures like the ones we’re seeing now in Texas. That’s not a talking point, that is true. It’s science. So of course, they’re denying it.”

About half of Texas’s wind turbines froze over this weekend, according to earlier reports.

Texas wind farms typically generate a total of 25,100 megawatts of energy, the Austin-American Statesman reported. On Sunday turbines accounting for 12,000 megawatts had iced over, ERCOT, which manages the state’s power grid, confirmed.

However the turbines don’t typically operate at full capacity in winter, MRT noted, adding that strong winds were turning the state’s “unfrozen coastal turbines at a higher rate than expected, helping to offset some of the power generation losses because of the icy conditions”.

Experts also said that the rolling blackouts were actually caused by the cold weather slowing down the production of natural gas, a fossil fuel, as the liquid is freezing inside of pipelines, which are not made for the current conditions in the state.

If you are looking at the facts in TX, the obvious lesson here is: stop subsidizing and mandating unreliables--which are often useless when you need them most--and do a better job at managing reliables.

Instead of acknowledging the reality that unreliables can't keep us warm or powered in the winter--and that the "100% renewable" direction is disastrous--advocates of unreliables are instead implying that no source of electricity can be relied upon, so no need to single out wind.

Dr. Emily Grubert of GA Tech writes: "Let us be absolutely clear: if there are grid failures today, it shows the existing (largely fossil-based) system cannot handle these conditions either." Really? Ever heard of the Midwest or Canada?

...

We know how to produce enough low-cost, reliable electricity for every situation. You just build a whole bunch of reliable power plants, including those with on-site fuel storage--such as coal and nuclear. You place a premium on reliability and resilience. That's it.

TX is having an electricity crisis during bad winter weather because it did not focus enough on building reliable power plants and infrastructure--because it was obsessed with getting as much unreliable wind/solar electricity as possible. Let's all learn from this mistake.

Right now TX's plans include
* 0 new nuclear plants
* 0 new coal plants
* 9.4 GW wind (the existing 32 GW went to 1 GW during crucial times this week)
* 11.9 GW solar (solar was useless much of the week)
* 5.0 GW gas (to handle the unreliables)

These plans should change.

As bad as TX's plans to "rely on unreliables" are, they are nothing compared to the Biden Plan, which calls for nearly 100% solar and wind electricity by 2035! Everyone should be asking him how the hell his plan would have fared in TX this week.

TX and America need to totally change direction in energy policy toward one of energy freedom, including freedom for the wonderful but demonized and criminalized ultra-reliable, non-carbon electricity source known as nuclear.

It Trump runs then it's all over for the nomination. If Trump doesn't run, then it will get interesting.

Thinking DeSantis will jump in if he doesn't. None of the seven GOP senators or Nikki Haley have a snowball's chance in hell after they broke with Trump.

The Trump voter was always there (remember the tea party movement). But the days of stringing them along for their votes and then ignoring them after the election are over.

One of Mexico’s best-known TV hosts sat in a car, masked, looking straight ahead while a needle was plunged into his bare upper arm. Juan Jose “Pepillo” Origel was the latest Mexican national to get the coronavirus vaccine — by coming to the United States.

“Vaccinated! Thank you #USA how sad that my country didn’t provide me with this security!!!” the 72-year-old star tweeted in Spanish on Jan. 23, along with a photo of his inoculation in the parking lot of the Miami zoo.

Mexican social media users immediately savaged Origel, protesting that his ability to fly to the United States for the vaccine crystallized their nation’s vast inequities. About the same time, Florida health leaders, concerned that out-of-state residents and foreign nationals were flying in for precious doses of scarce coronavirus vaccine, moved to restrict access to people who live in the state full- or part-time.

The lunatics are in favor of minority control.

Law and Order: For Thee, but Not for Me?

Horrifying as the attack on the Capitol was, it must be acknowledged that today’s militant anti-Trumpers are not opposed to all attempts at violent interference with legal political processes. This fact was made evident most recently with the release of prominent director Aaron Sorkin’s feature film The Trial of the Chicago 7, widely expected to earn a few Oscars. The crime for which five of the “seven” were convicted in 1970 (before the conviction was overturned on appeal) was that of conspiring to disrupt the 1968 Democratic National Convention through violent intimidation. The so-called Youth International Party, or “Yippies,” distributed flyers in advance of the convention including maps of the venue, with the notation, “Break in Break in Break in,” and the observation that the Convention’s security precautions were “a farce.”

One of the Seven subsequently acknowledged that storming the convention hall was “obviously not out of the question.” Such a break-in, designed to forcibly alter the Convention’s presidential nomination, was prevented only because the number of “protestors” who showed up fell far short of the organizers’ plans, while Mayor Richard Daley took firm steps to block them. Although one of the convicted defendants, Jerry Rubin, later admitted that the Seven “wanted disruption” and “were guilty as charged,” they remain cult heroes on the Left. Thus, as other commentators have observed, were the seeds of today’s anarchy planted by the celebrated Sixties.

But aside from the growing spirit of popular lawlessness, which Abraham Lincoln identified as the chief threat to our nation’s survival in his 1838 Springfield Lyceum address “On the Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions,” our constitutional system is also threatened in a different way by the outcome of the two senatorial elections in Georgia, decided the day before the D.C. riot. Through those elections Democrats (thanks to Donald Trump’s absurd rants and machinations, which undermined the Republican candidates) gained control of both houses of Congress, to accompany Joe Biden’s winning the presidential race—albeit all of it by narrow margins.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

While the consequences of the 2020 election do not threaten anything like the chaos of Russia in 1917, the danger posed by the electoral outcome in Georgia is that an unchecked Biden administration—under pressure from the Democrats’ most radical elements in Congress, in certain executive departments, and among its most influential donors and lobbyists—will push to enact an agenda that will be favored by (at most) a limited, and likely transient, majority of the population. Included in that agenda, along with Senator Bernie Sanders’ call for “defunding the Pentagon,” the adoption of a fully nationalized system of health care, and a comprehensive “Green New Deal,” are such potentially lasting structural changes in our governmental system as (a) packing the Supreme Court, (b) eliminating the Senate filibuster, and (c) packing the Senate, by granting statehood to the District of Columbia (probably unconstitutionally) and Puerto Rico. (The last-named proposal has already been brought forth by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as part of H.R. 1.) While it is doubtful that the Left-Democrats’ overall policy agenda will benefit the country as a whole, it is the structural changes that are far more dangerous, since they threaten to undermine the very principle of representative government.

The preservation of a system of constitutional government and general respect for law depends not only on inculcating a “political religion” of law-abidingness in our youth, as Lincoln urged, including the recognition that riots and lawlessness cannot be tolerated, whichever side of the political spectrum they originate from. It also requires an appreciation that whichever party wins an election is obliged to take into account the views of a substantial minority of the electorate, lest they feel alienated from the political system and no longer represented by it. It also entails that the winning party not try to transform the constitutional system in a foolish endeavor to permanently guarantee its hold on power.  A majority tyranny, as the American Founders foresaw, is no less threatening, over the long run, to civic harmony and the security of individual rights than the despotism of an irresponsible tsar or oligarchy.

They despise the popular vote.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Democratic presidents from Franklin D Roosevelt to Lyndon Johnson sought to alleviate poverty and economic insecurity with broad-based relief. But after Reagan tied public assistance to racism – deriding single-mother “welfare queens” – conservatives began demanding stringent work requirements so that only the “truly deserving” received help. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama acquiesced to this nonsense.

Not Biden.
His proposal would not only expand jobless benefits but also provide assistance to parents who are not working, thereby extending relief to 27 million children, including about half of all Black and Latino children. Republican senator Mitt Romney of Utah has put forward a similar plan.

This is just common sense. Tens of millions are hurting. A record number of American children are impoverished, according to the most recent census data.

The pandemic has also caused a large number of women to drop out of the labor force in order to care for children. With financial help, some will be able to pay for childcare and move back into paid work. After Canada enacted a national child allowance in 2006, employment rates for mothers increased. A decade later, when Canada increased its annual child allowance, its economy added jobs.

It’s still unclear exactly what form Biden’s final plans will take as they work their way through Congress. He has razor-thin majorities in both chambers. In addition, most of his proposals are designed for the current emergency; they would need to be made permanent.

But the stars are now better aligned for fundamental reform than they have been since Reagan.

It’s no small irony that a half-century after Reagan persuaded Americans big government was the problem, Trump’s demise is finally liberating America from Reaganism – and letting the richest nation on earth give its people the social support they desperately need.

Civic democracy is a culture, with a set of clear cultural assumptions and values. It is also an ideology. It is one under dire threats in 2021.

My point in this post is simply to say that to come to grips with Trumpism and the threats against democracy that face us today we’ll need to think more holistically. Militias, tactical gun culture, open-carry activism, Proud Boys type urban paramilitaries are all bleeding edges of the breakdown of a civic democratic culture.

So how do we build it up as opposed to simply policing the tears in the civic fabric? It is an ideological contest which requires those who want a different kind of future to think clearly about just what sustains civic democratic culture and what social forces, what political and cultural movements endanger it.

When it gets really cold, it can be hard to produce electricity, as customers in Texas and neighboring states are finding out. But it’s not impossible. Operators in Alaska, Canada, Maine, Norway and Siberia do it all the time.
What has sent Texas reeling is not an engineering problem, nor is it the frozen wind turbines blamed by prominent Republicans. It is a financial structure for power generation that offers no incentives to power plant operators to prepare for winter. In the name of deregulation and free markets, critics say, Texas has created an electric grid that puts an emphasis on cheap prices over reliable service.
It’s a “Wild West market design based only on short-run prices,” said Matt Breidert, a portfolio manager at a firm called TortoiseEcofin.
And yet the temporary train wreck of that market Monday and Tuesday has seen the wholesale price of electricity in Houston go from $22 a megawatt-hour to about $9,000. Meanwhile, 4 million Texas households have been without power.

well BWAA, I have co-workers in DFW, Austin, and San Antonio who are experiencing massive power outages, burst water pipes as a result, single digit temps, and the Alamo has a foot of fucking snow.

Equinox Mountain - Wikipedia

One wind turbine was installed in 1981 and three more in 1982, making Little Equinox Mountain the site of one of the first wind farms in the United States. These turbines, an early-generation design by WTG Systems of Buffalo, New York , were mounted on 80-foot (24 m) truss towers and had a nominal peak output of 350 kW.

Keep talking to your idiot coworkers in Texas as they are just as fucking stupid as you!!!!

So it’s fair to ask: why don’t wind turbines fail all the time in colder climates, such as Canada, Sweden or the American Midwest?

The answer, in short, is that turbines in colder places are typically equipped with de-icing and other tools, such as built-in heating. In Texas during the historic cold snap, they were not.

“Cold weather kits can keep [wind turbines] operating when temperatures plunge. This is the norm in colder states and in Europe,” said Samuel Brock, a spokesman for the American Clean Power Association. “Historically in Texas, given the warm climate, it hasn’t been necessary.”

In Canada, where wind turbines can experience icing up to 20% of the time in winter months, special “cold weather packages” are installed to provide heating to turbine components such as the gearbox, yaw and pitch motors and battery, according to the Canadian government. This can allow them to operate in temperatures down to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 30 Celsius).

To prevent icing on rotor blades — which cause the blades to catch air less efficiently and to generate less power — heating and water-resistant coatings are used.

One Swedish company, SkellefteƄ Kraft, which has experimented with operating wind turbines in the Arctic, coats turbine blades with thin layers of carbon fiber which are then heated to prevent ice from forming. Another method used by the company is to circulate hot air inside the blades.

Major wind turbine manufacturers, such as General Electric GE +2% or Denmark's Vestas, regularly equip their turbines with such cold weather gear.

President Joe Biden served in the U.S. Senate for more than 30 years, and then served eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president. But until he moved in last month, he said Tuesday night, he’d never been inside the presidential "residence" area of the White House.

Biden made the disclosure during a town hall event in Milwaukee, hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

"I had been in the Oval Office a hundred times as vice president -- more than that -- every morning for the initial meetings but I had never been up in the residence," Biden said.

Biden Dismisses China’s Uyghur Genocide as Difference in “Cultural Norms”
Refuses to denounce re-education camps.

Despite the Trump administration and his own characterizing Beijing’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims as a genocide, Biden furiously backpedaled after he was asked about the issue.

“If you know anything about Chinese history, it has always been the time when China has been victimized by the outer world is when they haven’t been unified at home,” said Biden, going on to say that President Xi Jinping is aiming to achieve a “tightly controlled China.”

“I’m not gonna speak out against what he’s doing in Hong Kong, what he’s doing with the Uyghurs in the western mountains of China…culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow,” he added.

When you understand what China is actually doing to the Uyghurs, Biden’s comments are atrocious.

More than a million Uyghurs and other minorities are held against their will in re-education camps throughout the Xinjiang region.

After Xi Jinping directed authorities to show “absolutely no mercy” towards prisoners, reports began emerging of the forced sterilization and systematic gang rape and torture of women by guards.

“Tursunay Ziawudun, who fled Xinjiang after her release and is now in the US, said women were removed from the cells “every night” and raped by one or more masked Chinese men. She said she was tortured and later gang-raped on three occasions, each time by two or three men,” reports the BBC.

Victims have also reported that guards use electric batons to rape women, electrocuting them from the inside.

Apparently, according to Joe Biden, this is just part of Chinese ‘cultural norms’ and shouldn’t be questioned.

By Tuesday morning, the residents of Colorado City, Tex., were getting anxious. More than 24 hours had passed since a deadly Arctic blast knocked out power across the state, leaving them without heat or electricity in below-freezing temperatures. To make matters worse, many also lacked running water, forcing them to haul in heavy buckets of snow each time they needed to flush their toilets.
Residents turned to a community Facebook group to ask whether the small town planned to open warming shelters, while others wondered if firefighters could do their job without water. But when Colorado City’s mayor chimed in, it was to deliver a less-than-comforting message: The local government had no responsibility to help out its citizens, and only the tough would survive.
“No one owes you [or] your family anything,” Tim Boyd wrote on Tuesday in a now-deleted Facebook post, according to KTXS and KTAB/KRBC. “I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout!”
Boyd’s tirade, which also demanded that “lazy” residents find their own ways of procuring water and electricity, immediately drew backlash. Later on Tuesday, Boyd announced his resignation and admitted that he could have “used better wording.”

McConnell’s Inner Circle Punches Back
February 17, 2021 at 8:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard 41 Comments

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did not respond to former President Donald Trump’s attack yesterday, but the New York Times did have comments from two in McConnell’s inner circle.

Said Janet Mullins Grissom, McConnell’s first chief of staff: “Trump going total mean girl ought to feed the cable beast for weeks.”

Said Billy Piper, another former top McConnell aide: “It seems an odd choice for someone who claims they want to lead the G.O.P. to attack a man who has been unanimously elected to lead Senate Republicans a history-making eight times. But we have come to expect these temper tantrums when he feels threatened — just ask any of his former chiefs of staff or even his vice president.”

O’Rourke Says Texas Is ‘Nearing a Failed State’
February 17, 2021 at 7:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard 149 Comments

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) “blamed Republican leaders in Texas for what he says was a government failure to prepare for widespread power outages resulting from a massive winter storm that swept across the state this week,” The Hill reports.

Said O’Rourke: “So much of this was avoidable. Going back to the deregulation of our electric grid here in Texas, which has actually created an incentive to not weatherize or protect against these events.”

He added: “The energy capital of North America cannot provide enough energy to warm and power people’s homes. We are nearing a failed state in Texas. And it has nothing to do with God or natural disasters. It has everything to do with those in positions of public trust who have failed us.”

Mayor Quits After Saying ‘No One Owes You Anything’
February 17, 2021 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard 214 Comments

Colorado City, TX mayor Tim Boyd (R) said that “he had already resigned after he was widely condemned for writing on Facebook that people suffering in the cold without power shouldn’t look to their local governments for help,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

Boyd wrote in his typo-ridden post that “no one owes you are your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!”

Boyd continued, saying that he was “sick and tired” of people looking for handouts and that the current situation is “sadly a product of a socialist government.”

He concluded: “Only the strong will survive and the weak will perish.”

White House Says Obstruction Will Hurt Republicans
February 17, 2021 at 6:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard 31 Comments

Mike Donilon, senior adviser to President Biden, argues in a memo to White House senior staff that GOP opposition to the Covid-19 rescue package would shrink the party’s already declining national support, Axios reports.

Writes Donilon: “There seems to be a growing conventional wisdom that it is either politically smart — or, at worst, cost-free — for the GOP to adopt an obstructionist, partisan, base-politics posture. However, there is lots of evidence that the opposite is true: This approach has been quite damaging to them.”

One data point: A new Economist/YouGov poll finds a decline in voters calling themselves Republicans since November (from 42% to 37%).

Thanks to you, Donald! Keep up the good work!
