There will be a lot written about the 2016 election. The hows and the whys will be debated, and likely there will be much disagreement about what actually happened. In many ways this appears at first glance to be the culmination of a massive demographic shift of the blue collar working class voter moving from the Democratic Party to the GOP. Whether Trump is a catalyst to this or a vessel for voters is certainly a valid question. My gut tells me it was a little bit of both.
If I were a Democrat right now, I would be asking myself why the blue collar working class voter (who had been a staple to the Democratic Party for generations) is abandoning the Party, and how exactly I might be fitting into the new Democratic Party coalition of the very rich, the very poor, minorities, and liberal elitists. Because that's pretty much what is left and they really do not share many of the same values and priorities. Keeping this coalition together moving forward will likely take some work.

Working class not benefiting from the recovery, after being told to be patient because the health care act was higher priority. And seeing that it never came, no program nor policy that even might improve employment or wages.
Ronald Reagan once said that the best social welfare program was a good paying job.
Globalism and technology was taking those jobs overseas and the liberal government was doing nothing to encourage those companies to bring those jobs back.
Quite the opposite. They destroy an entire coal mining industry to prevent a possible (not probable) .0001 degree rise in the average temperature over the next 100 years.
And they were just as hostile to fracking, pipelines, and other sources of good paying energy-related jobs.
The only wonder is why people were surprised when Trump won.

Republicans now control the White House and both house of Congress. They’re about to fill a crucial vacancy on the Supreme Court. GOP leaders claim a mandate for drastic action.
What makes it even more striking is that this tremendous backlash happened despite a growing economy and a popular Democratic incumbent.
Wasn’t it supposed to be the economy, stupid?
Well, it was. Trump correctly surmised that millions of Americans felt the economy was not fair to them. Their anger has been rising for decades thanks the globalization, trade and rapid advances in technology. It only accelerated in the aftermath of the Great Recession when many Americans saw Wall Street crash the economy and then get off without punishment. For many, it’s proof the economy and political system are rigged against them.
It’s impossible to overstate how deeply-felt this sentiment is by many — particularly in the hard hit Midwest. Trump took his unlikely candidacy to victory by tapping into this anger. He actually won a presidential election with no clear policy proposals except that he was going to destroy a rigged system. He was going to make America great again. That was enough for many voters.
In contrast, Hillary Clinton did not offer a clear vision for these hurting voters. Worse, she became a caricature of the very establishment Trump promised to destroy. When Trump suggested he wouldn’t accept the election results, he proved he was not going to bend to the will of a rigged system. When Trump encouraged chants of “lock her up” at his rallies, it proved he would take drastic measures to destroy the establishment. He quickly defined his opponent as “Crooked Hillary,” a typical politician who did everything she could — including setting up a private email server — to avoid accountability to the voters.
One last thing: We must acknowledge that racism also played a big role in his campaign. It’s an embarrassment to the majority of Americans. But to suggest it was only racism that led to the rise of Donald Trump is to take the easy way out and ignore the bigger forces that are transforming our country

Trump and Congress could change the laws to make it unprofitable for companies to do their manufacturing abroad (over the dead bodies of the GOP establishment and donors) but if those factories do come back, they will be modern factories employing 100 computer engineers, 100 mechanical engineers, 10,000 robots, and 0 blue-collar workers.
