The election, the consequences, the aftermath..

So from what I can gather from reading my Facebook feed of the couple hundred people I have deemed as Friends, either people think Donald Trump is the savior we needed to mend a broken country, or they believe that Donald Trump is the anti-Christ and has now been given reigns to destroy our County. What I am failing to see is much of anyone who seems upset that we will be missing out on something special because we did not elect Hillary Clinton as President.

This should not come as a surprise.

Right, wrong, or indifferent, Hillary Clinton spent very little time telling us why she should be President. At least not in comparison to how much time she spent telling us why Donald Trump should not be President. More to the point, she didn't spend much time really telling us why Donald Trump's policies would not work (or why hers would work better)... but rather she spent most of her time telling us why Donald Trump and his supporters were racist, bigoted, hateful, or just downright "deplorable".

What I can tell you of the Donald Trump supporters who happen to be on my Facebook feed, none of them are racists, bigoted, hateful, or "deplorable". If they were, then they would not be my friends. I suspect that my cross section of friends is more likely indicative of being the rule, rather than the exception here.

Donald Trump tapped into something out there that those with liberal leaning political tendencies simply do not feel. The fact that liberals and Democrats do not feel it, doesn't mean it's not real. It also doesn't give these same people the right to "judge" or simply "substitute" their own assumptions about what it is that is motivating these Trump supporters. This is especially true when your assumption is that it must be racism, bigotry, hate, or something that is otherwise "deplorable".

Identity politics is a long term problem that doesn't seem to have either a short term or long term solution, other than simply having it fail, and fail consistently. For the past eight years, people who disagree with President Obama have been accused of being a racist. Opposition to his policies were usually met with cries of overt attempts to undermine the first Black President. Both John McCain (a war hero) and Mitt Romney (a Mormon) were also widely cast out by liberals as dark racists in much the same way as Donald Trump was. This may have effectively helped Barack Obama win the Presidency for two terms, but not much else.

Democrats now sit virtually powerless. They lost the White House, they failed to win back the Senate, the GOP holds a large advantages in the House. Thirty three of the fifty state Governors are Republican, and thirty one states currently have both houses controlled by Republicans. Donald Trump will appoint the next Supreme Court Justice, and quite possible replace Ruth Ginsburg, who effectively disqualified herself as a High Court Justice with her previous inflammatory political attacks on our President elect.

If Democrats have not figured out by now that you cannot win back American by calling Americans names, then they deserve to be the minority Party. They deserve to remain there until they end their reliance on identity politics, and quit waiting for older white Americans to die and be replaced by other voters more welcoming to their policies. They need to not only appeal to, but also respect, all Americans. That starts only when they stop arrogantly assuming everyone who disagrees with them must be some sort of deplorable.

I guess I find something deplorable in the following:

Jihadists Happy About Trump's Win

Vladimir Putin, of course, spent Wednesday morning dancing in the streets of Moscow, likely with his shirt off. And, we are already learning of another foreign policy implication of Donald Trump's victory: The jihadists are delighted that he will be in the White House.

Prominent Al-Qaeda-connected cleric Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, for example, took to Twitter to celebrate the beginning of America's collapse.

Jabhat Fateh al-Sham's Twitter account announced that, "Trump's victory is a powerful slap to those promoting the benefits of democratic mechanisms."

Trump's win also jibes with these groups' strategic vision, since they promote themselves as defenders of Sunni Islam, and Trump appears to be planning to embrace Syria's Bashar al-Assad, a Shia Alawite.

ISIS is happy for a similar reason; reduced to tatters by allied offensives and poor recruiting numbers, Trump's anti-Muslim statements play into their argument that the world is divided into only two types of people: Muslims, and those who hate Muslims. They expect their numbers to swell, and hope that The Donald will radicalize lone-wolf terrorists in Europe and the United States.

We can only hope that they are wrong.

Trump was elected because a demographic that was once called the backbone of America, who, except for Reagan, voted Democrat since FDR, voted for Trump by the millions. I refer to the working class suburban voter. Why did they do this?

It's because they are tired of being called a racist if they disagree with anything Obama has said or done.

It's because they're tired of being attacked because they support their local police.

It's because they're tired of being insulted because they still think that there are two sexes....and each should have their own bathroom.

It's because they're tired of being criticized for having the same view of marriage that Obama and Hillary both had as recently as 2012.

It's because they're tired of seeing most of the jobs created be temporary, contract, part time, or low wage service jobs.

It's because they don't like seeing their Justice department, IRS and FBI politicised.

These are people who have voted Democrat for almost a century. There's a reason why tge dems leadership bench is so thin. The dem party has become a coalition of special interest groups abd lost its core in the process.

Russia Was In Contact With Trump During Campaign

“Russia said it was in contact with President-elect Donald Trump’s team during the U.S. election campaign, despite repeated denials by the Republican candidate’s advisers that any links existed,” Bloomberg reports.

MOSCOW, Nov 10 (Reuters) - The Russian government was in touch with members of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign staff during the U.S. election campaign, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.

“There were contacts,” Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying. He did not give details.

When asked whether these contacts would now intensify after Trump’s election victory, Ryabkov said: “These working moments and follow-up on this or that matter will depend on the situation and the questions which face us. But we will of course continue this work after the elections.”

Defeated Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton accused Trump of being a “puppet” of President Vladimir Putin during the campaign, and U.S. officials said Russia had hacked into Democratic party emails, something Moscow denied.

Trump has said he might meet Putin before his inauguration, but Putin’s spokesman has said there are currently no plans for such a meeting.

The Russian parliament erupted in applause on Wednesday when it heard that Trump had been elected and Putin told foreign ambassadors he was ready to fully restore ties with Washington.

Ryabkov was more circumspect in his interview, saying the Russian Foreign Ministry felt no euphoria about the Republican’s win even though it wanted to normalize relations with Washington.

Ryabkov said Trump’s allies had made some tough statements about Russia during the campaign and that his ministry was therefore not harboring any rose-tinted hopes.

“We are not expecting anything in particular from the new U.S. administration,” Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying.

Russia Reached Out to Trump, Clinton Camps During Election
by Ilya Arkhipov

Russia said that it talked with the teams of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the U.S. presidential election as part of routine outreach during a campaign.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the Russian embassy in the U.S. held talks with the Trump camp that “were on a sufficient, responsible level.” Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Trump, said in an e-mail that she was “not aware” of any meetings by campaign representatives with Russian diplomats.

Ryabkov said the talks were “part of routine everyday work.” There was also “sporadic” contact with the Clinton team, though it was “not always productive,” he said. Calls to members of Clinton’s former campaign team for comment weren’t immediately returned.

Trump has said he’d welcome better ties with Russia, would be willing to cooperate with Putin to defeat Islamic State in Syria, and may even consider recognizing the Kremlin’s annexation of Crimea.

As he was leaning toward Medvedev in Seoul, Obama was overheard asking for time - "particularly with missile defense" - until he is in a better position politically to resolve such issues.

"I understand your message about space," replied Medvedev, who will hand over the presidency to Putin in May.

At least Putin sent a telegram, someone sent a letter and there was some diplomatic channel stuff. If I were Trump, any leader including allies who couldn't be bothered to do more than tweet something just dug themselves into a hole when any negotiations come around. I've got a feeling that Trumps knows how to drive a hard bargain, and a little more respect for the United States might have helped their position when that time comes.

An American Tragedy

David Remnick:
“The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy. On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President—a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit—and witness the inauguration of a con who did little to spurn endorsement by forces of xenophobia and white supremacy. It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety.”

"Make American Great again"... sounds an awful lot like "Hope and Change" or "Change you can believe in" to me. They are both non-specific slogans that can mean whatever the hell they want to whoever decides to read into them.

After four years of "Hope and change" and four years of "Change you can believe in"... the country was left with a distinct "hope" for a new "change".

It's hard to imagine anyone who supported Obama criticizing Trump for running basically the same campaign of generalizations and non-specifics as Obama did for two elections. What did Obama "really" accomplish after eight years?

A multi-trillion dollar stimulus bill that failed.
A multi-trillion dollar health care law that failed.
A bad nuclear agreement with Iran.

Even the little social battles that were "won" were won in the courts, not in the legislation. His signature accomplishment will either die a slow death (if Democrats try to block repeal and replace) because Trump and the GOP will not move funds from other sources to keep propping it up as Obama did. It's either repealed... or it's "on it's own" which is a death sentence.

You keep touting his high approvals, and he didn't accomplish anything other than looking better in comparison to the two candidate running in this election.

Obama has set a pretty low bar, James... Trump would have to not hardly try to not bypass it.

1: Repeal the ACA and will take away health insurance from 15,000,000 people, and will not have a replacement.

2: He will deport 12,000,00 men, women and children. The imagery of this will draw parallels to the Nazis boarding Jews onto rail cars for the murder camps.

3: He will start building a wall along the border with Mexico. Mexico will not pay for the wall.

4: He will ban every single Muslim from entering the United States.

5: He will put every American Muslim on a watch list.

6: He will appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and put Hillary Clinton in prison. This is what a 3rd world dictatorship would do.

7: Repeal the Iran Arms Agreement.

1: Repealing ObamaCare, the ACA, without a viable replacement, he will be faced with opposition within his own party in the congressmen Senators and Governors of Republican states will find resist along with the Democrats because if millions or their residents will lose their insurance. They may claim that just wait and we will replace it, but the reality is the Republicans are deeply divided in how or even if they will want to act on health insurance at the federal level.

2 Repeal 12,000,000 people won't happen. The reality is, that because it would destroy the families of millions can't happen. States like California may grant refuge in defiance of the President. Constitutionally, that's not legal but he just won't do it.

3: We will not build a wall, Nor if we were dumb enough to look like the Soviet Empire border that he rodent wants, bodies an all, would make us look no different than the Soviets during the cold war. We can make the borders more secure and make it necessary for potential employers to verify the legality of farm workers, etc.

4: It simply won't happen.

5: This is a direct violation of the constitution, the courts would never allow it. It won't fly.

6: The DOJ and FBI have both said after extensive investigations, no laws were violated and the politics of it are truly ugly. Threatening to imprison your opponent is so third world dictatorship style, he would even have trouble finding someone other than Giuliani to do that. No Way in hell.

The states of California and Minnesota elected celebrities. They were object failures. Donald Trump is accustomed to being the boss. The office of the President is he weakest of the three branches of government. He will find it extremely frustrating.

What will be amusing in the next few weeks, is that he will be required to testify under oath on the con artist special, called Trump University. Even if it comes to that point after January 20 he will be required under law to testify in the case. Fun fun fun.

You are going to regret this far more than you can imagine.

7: Immediately cancel the nuclear agreement with Iran.

Item one, the President can't do it according to what I have read.

Two, the foreign affairs experts will tell him that it could lead to a nuclear war in the Middle East between Israel, that already has nuclear weapons and Iran. Israel will not allow that to happen, and if they believe it necessary, they would use nuclear weapons in their defense, legitimately, That could trigger World War III and it would be far more dangerous to civilization than World War II.

You notice that "I" wasn't one of those people convinced that Hillary was going to win in a landslide. I wrote about how I felt Silver and others were wrong in North Carolina and Florida specifically... and how there were signs from early voting that Trump was going to outperform the polls.

I ran my own numbers and was spot on in my demographic breakdown (which was considerably different from how most saw the race). As it turned out, Donald Trump vastly outperformed the polls in Republican support (and slightly under-performed with independents) Neither surprised me all that much.

Here is the reality Roger... being "in the crowd" of people being wrong, still makes you wrong. Being "right" is being "right". I'd rather not follow the crowd and be right.

A multi-trillion dollar health care law that failed.
Imperfect but false. about 16,000,00 Americans have health insurance than the day the law was signed. Singe payer would have been better and covered everyone at a lower cost. But Obama tried to make a law that the Republicans would work with him and make it bi partisan. The decision to deny Obama a second term, motivated to offer only amendments meant to dismantle the program. It needs work bur it is far fro a failure.

By the standards of what the Obama economic team stated the stimulus would do and what it actually "did" - it was an abject failure. It's literally impossible to spend a trillion dollars and not have it do "anything".

The decrease in the "uninsured" is due almost entirely to the medicare expansion. Again, you hand out free stuff, people will take it. Doesn't make it good policy. Anyone could give people free stuff. But what is intellectually dishonest is to try to claim that the guts of the law (the exchange and the regulations) is a success. Even Mark Dayton admitted that the Affordable Care act is not affordable anymore.

Moreover Roger... without the Obama administration "moving" money around without congressional approval to reimburse insurance companies... rates would have risen even higher. Without the reimbursements (after Trump takes office) - those rates will continue to raise.

Even supporters of the law are arguing that it needs to be "fixed" which is to say they wanted to spend more money on subsidies and reimbursements to insurance companies to artificially keep expenses low.

What do you suppose the chances of either of those happening is now? No congressional power to do so... and a President who will not go around congress to try to save the law?

If it isn't "fixed" (and by fixed I mean if no more money is sunk into it) how does it survive, when even the advocates believe it requires fixing to keep it viable.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he found it tough to explain President-elect Donald Trump's comments on women to his daughters, according to The New York Times.

In October, a recording surfaced of Trump bragging about sexual assault, saying he could grab women by the genitals because he was a celebrity. Trump later defended the comments as "locker-room talk."

Goodell said those types of comments would make the NFL's goal of reducing domestic violence incidents within the league more difficult. He also said it was difficult to explain to his family.

“It makes my job harder at home too,” Goodell said at the Times' DealBook conference on Thursday. “I have twin daughters and a wife so I have to explain that to them. So yes, on that front. Does it make it harder publicly? Listen, I think our country has to have more respect for one another, and we have to unite.”

Goodell and the NFL have come under fire for being too lenient on domestic violence after high-profile cases such as Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and more recently Josh Brown were penalized lightly.

On Thursday, Goodell noted he thinks people do not understand the complexity of domestic violence.

Goodell also said the impact of Trump's presidency on the NFL was still unknown. Some players spoke out against the newly elected president after Election Day, and Goodell affirmed their prerogative to be involved in politics, according to the Times.

KKK announces North Carolina ‘victory’ parade

The KKK has announced a rally in the state.

Trump, a Republican, was officially endorsed by the KKK during his campaign against Hillary Clinton, a Democrat. Trump won North Carolina on his way to winning the presidency, defeating Clinton here by nearly 5 percentage points.

Details on the rally celebrating Trump’s victory are scarce. It’s being held by The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which is based in Pelham – a small, unincorporated community about 45 minutes north of Burlington, near the Virginia border.

The group was behind a rally in South Carolina last year protesting the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol building.

According to the group’s website, a North Carolina rally will be held Dec. 3. However, the KKK has not yet publicly announced a location or time for the rally.

The website refers to it as a “Victory Klavalkade Klan Parade” and announces in all-caps that
“TRUMP’S RACE UNITED MY PEOPLE.”

A couple things I have been thinking about.

1: Chuck Todd noted on his MTP show this afternoon, is that it's not Trump won getting more votes, he didn't. But what gave him the election is the electoral college. In he normally Blue mid west states, he didn't get many more votes than Romney did in 2012. But Hillary Clinton got fewer votes in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin than Obama did. She was unable to generate any enthusiasm. Trump also lost the popular vote.

2: And on the last paragraph, is the Electoral College. I know we are the United States of America. The Senate is not truly democratic. Each state, no matter how many live id the state, they get two senators.

2: We only have one national vote, for the executive branch. In the last 16 years we have had two candidates that won more votes, but lost because of the antiquated electoral college system. In the case of electing our President, the popular vote, majority rule, should choose the President. It isn't just because of those two elections in recent history, I believe in majority rule for the one and only national vote.

WASHINGTON -- What happens when the factories and the steel mills don't come back? When the coal mines fail to reopen? When both a tightfisted Congress and the government of Mexico refuse to pay for his boondoggle of a border wall?

When the president-elect, Donald Trump, takes office and has to confront inconvenient reality, how will he react? "We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead," Hillary Clinton said Wednesday, and of course she is right. But I wouldn't be honest if I pretended, at this point, to be hopeful. My fear is that the man we saw on the campaign trail is the same man we will see in the White House.

He proved to be a tremendously effective demagogue. He stunned the world by energizing and mobilizing legions of "forgotten men and women" -- white, working-class Americans living in small towns and rural areas across the nation -- who bought into his pledge to "make America great again." Instead of serious policy proposals, he gave them scapegoats: immigrants, Muslims, people of color living in "inner cities" that he imagined as circles of Dante's hell.

His promises were of the non-serious variety, in that they cannot be fulfilled.

Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq who publicly feuded with President-elect Donald Trump during the campaign, said that he has no regrets and urged Trump to bring the country together.

Khan told NBC10 Philadelphia on Thursday “without hesitation” he was sure he did the right thing by speaking out against Trump.

“As a grateful citizen of this country, whenever you see that your values, the values of this country are being challenged, it’s an obligation of all citizens, all patriots regardless of party affiliation to stand up and be counted and remind each other that we have much better values: plurality, moving forward together, equal dignity, equal protection of law,” he said. “These are the basic fundamental values and we will continue to remind each other.”

With his wife, Ghazala, at his side, Khan gave one of the most memorable speeches at the Democratic National Convention in July when he held up a copy of the Constitution and asked if Trump had even read the document and what sacrifices the businessman had made for the country. Trump responded by attacking Ghazala Khan, suggesting she had not been allowed to speak because she was a Muslim woman. She later said she did not speak because she was still emotional over her son’s 2004 death.

Khizr Khan also starred in a moving ad for Hillary Clinton’s campaign in which he asked if people like his son would have a place in Trump’s America. Trump has pledged to ban Muslims from entering the United States.

On Thursday, Khan urged the president-elect, who ran a divisive campaign, to bring the country together.

“We are disappointed, that’s not what we are expecting, but this is the time to move forward and begin to give hope to those that are distraught, disappointed, and that is the role that I wish to continue to play so that we can continue to move forward,” he said. “This nation needs to move forward, and move forward together, not divided, and that is his responsibility now, to bring us all together and move us all forward without division.”

We are actually a Republic, not a Democracy. The Electoral College is one of many examples of deference to State's Rights.

The beauty of the Electoral College is that it forces candidates to cater to all parts of America, rather than just concentrate on the population centers. A pure popular vote election would concentrate on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc... Swing states come and go throughout time. But your population centers would always garner all the attention.

Trump (for instance) won in the Midwest, won in the "rust belt", won down south, won some western states, etc... it shows an appeal to different areas of the county and different people.

Some 4,000 protesters surged into the downtown area late Thursday night with chants like "we reject the president-elect!"

The winner-take-all-method of allotting electoral votes means candidates must focus their efforts on just a handful of closely divided states.

Gingrich added, "America would be better served with a presidential election process that treated citizens across the country equally." Picking a president by the national popular vote, he asserted, would be in sync with "fundamental democratic principles."

Exploding the poor white myth of Trump's rise to power

New York (AFP) - The myth that only uneducated white men would vote for Donald Trump exploded in a sensational win for the maverick billionaire, a former reality star with no political experience whatsoever.

His resounding victory -- even if Hillary Clinton won the popular vote -- spotlights a wealthier and more diverse coalition of supporters than many Americans thought possible, including educated voters, women and minority voters.

To that point:
Half of all Americans making 100K+ voted for Trump
Trump won white women 53%.
Trump exceeded Romney's vote among Blacks and Americans of latin decent.

you would think that the media would smarten up and get out of the myth business, yet i fully expect them to double down.

they just can't help themselves.

CH, I toldja so:

Obama Care: I will immediately repeal and replace Obama Care.
Interview on 60 Minutes. "We will keep the coverage to pre consisting condition. We will keep parents with children, up to the age of 26."

The two are the most important issues in Obama Care. Insurance companies are increasing the cost of those two issues, because those who choose not buy insurance, do not reduce the risk to the insurance companies.

Second: Lock her up! In an interview with the Wall street journal, "I haven't given it much thought.".

This is just the beginning.

Let me add to that.

Questioned by the press in the capital building, his proposal of spending massively on infrastructure, is not on the house or Senate priority list. Between the massive tax cuts, coupled with infrastructure and military spending, the deficit will rocket.

Didn't you think that you were going to see a smaller government, conservative?

It's like the Hillary Clinton policy.

I like this. Trump isn't going to make the same mistake with Christie that Obama did with Clinton. Christie, the stupid thug according to Trump insiders, has been banished from the transition team, is unconfirmable for any Cabinet post, and would be more hindrance in draining the swamp than he'd be possibly worth. If only Obama had had the same common sense ... but that's ancient history. In this early decision, Trump is one up on Obama.
