Time for Clinton to follow the President's lead (or possibly face consequences?) |
There is every indication that this may "no longer" be the case. This weekend, it was suggested that while Trump would not personally push for any additional criminal probes, that he would certainly rely on the advice of a new Attorney General, if that person made the determination that such a probe was worthy.
This reversal of the reversal was tied to the discussion regarding Clinton getting involved with the recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Basically, the issue becomes this: Trump was willing to let bygones be bygones as long as the Clintons agreed to go "bye" and be "gone". Latching on to the recounts, changes the dynamic.
Bottom line: it certainly sounds like a thinly veiled threat on the part of Trump and his team. If Clinton doesn't back off her involvement in the recounts, Trump may not back off his original calls for a special prosecutor.
Most people agree that it would be in the Country's best interest, as well as in the Clinton's best interest to take the same stance as President Obama. The President has openly stated that election was fair, it was not compromised, the results are legitimate, and it's time for everyone to work towards a smooth transition to the new Administration.
Update: Pennsylvania recounts unlikely
It also appears that a recount in Pennsylvania is unlikely. Jill Stein cannot just call for a recount and pay the fees. She must actually contest the election in Court and show the court that Election Fraud was at at least "probable". At this point, there is absolutely no evidence of any fraud. The only suggestion of such comes from some poorly designed statistical analysis that provides some circumstantial possibility that fraud was committed. This analysis has been taken apart by people like Nate Silver and others as generally lacking any merit what-so-ever.
So given:
- The size of the Trump victory
- The amount of fraud that would have had to have taken place to swing the election
- The enormous cost in recounting
- The potential problems with the safe harbor dates for Pennsylvania's electoral college
it would appear unlikely that Stein can show enough legal cause to garner the recount anyways.
As it stand Jill Stein is still raising money and suggesting that she is coordinating (and paying for) a voter initiated recount. This would require a petition signed (and notarized) by at least three voters in every one of around 9100 precincts. This would require about 27,300 people. Stein tweeted yesterday that she had about 1500 people who were on board. As of today, they have filed in 100 (out of 9100) precincts. (just over 1%). Another problem is that the filing dates for a voter initialed recount have come and gone in several precincts. Apparently the rest have a deadline of today. Stein has filed a lawsuit to extend the date (if there is evidence of any tampering or abnormalities in the selected precincts).
It would appear that Stein's request for this (along with her request for more funding) is likely being made in bad faith. The best she could hope for is a partial recount of the state in precincts where everything was done correctly, where there are enough volunteers, and where they actually met the filing deadline. Moreover, this would have to be completed by close of business day today. Looks as of now, that she will see just over 1% of the state recounted.

Trump is the president elect. His current behavior concerning recounts and that he would have won if illegals didn't vote is just a prelude of all the fun we are about to have and what a TRE he is going to be Oh well, the show is over, stop being an ass. LOLOL
It has come to light that Trump and Clinton had a private agreement that either candidate would concede immediately upon the AP calling the race for the other. As I've written here, it is my belief that their agreement extended beyond that stipulation, and I strongly suspect that involving herself in recount seeking to overturn Wisconsin abrogates their agreement.
That probably opens the door from Trump's perspective for more aggressive investigations into the Clinton Foundation.
Suppose the electoral college system was gone and the winner was based on popular vote. Theoretically a candidate could demand a recount nationally and have all 120 million votes reviewed. That would grind any transaction to a screaming halt.
And i had the same interpretation of Trump's comment. Hillary just doesn't know when to put aside her arrogance and thirst for power.
i would hope that trump simply cuts jeff sessions loose to pursue whatever degree of criminal investigation he deems appropriate. i never took trumps comments regarding this that continuing to pursue a criminal probe against clinton was completely off the table. only that TRUMP wouldn't focus on it. traditionally, the AG retains a high level of independence, and sessions will be free to go after her once he cleans up the unlawful partisan shitpile that is our current depart. of justice.
and I strongly suspect that involving herself in recount seeking to overturn Wisconsin abrogates their agreement.
And I strongly suspect he did not win in an electorial landslide and that there were not millions of illegal votes. Any recount should show that the donald is full of it when it comes to that claim. Your claim on the other hand is pure speculation and as accurate as the millions of illegal votes.
Texas elector who criticized Trump says he’s resigning
By KYLE CHENEY 11/28/16 10:11 AM EST
A Republican member of the Electoral College who had expressed reservations about supporting President-elect Donald Trump has opted instead to resign his position and turn it over to an alternate elector.
Art Sisneros, a Texas Republican elector who told POLITICO in August that he was strongly weighing a vote against Trump, confirmed Monday that he would quit the position. Sisneros had said as recently as last week that he still hadn't decided how to cast his electoral vote.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Trump campaign manager and current spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway was asked about Trump’s walkback of his campaign promises to supporters to “lock her up” as president.
‘He said he wouldn’t rule it out. He said it’s just not his focus right now. I think he’s being quite magnanimous and at the same time he’s not undercutting at all the authority and the autonomy of the Department of Justice, of the FBI, of the House Committees, who knows where the evidence may lead if, in fact, it were — if the investigation were re-opened somewhere.
‘But this is the president-elect’s position right now and I would say he has been incredibly gracious and magnanimous to Secretary Clinton at a time when for whatever reason her folks are saying they will join in a recount to try to somehow undo the 70 plus electoral votes that he beat her by.'
That's threatening comment..

In a strange way it's the flip side of this recount. If there was no fraud, why should Trump worry about establishing the truth? If there were no crimes, why should Clinton worry about establishing the truth?

Trump bet on stupid, and won. Nate Silver
Education levels may be a proxy for cultural hegemony. Academia, the news media and the arts and entertainment sectors are increasingly dominated by people with a liberal, multicultural worldview, and jobs in these sectors also almost always require college degrees. Trump’s campaign may have represented a backlash against these cultural elites.
Educational attainment may be a better indicator of long-term economic well-being than household incomes. Unionized jobs in the auto industry often pay reasonably well even if they don’t require college degrees, for instance, but they’re also potentially at risk of being shipped overseas or automated.
Education levels probably have some relationship with racial resentment, although the causality isn’t clear. The act of having attended college itself may be important, insofar as colleges and universities are often more diverse places than students’ hometowns. There’s more research to be done on how exposure to racial minorities affected white voters. For instance, did white voters who live in counties with large Hispanic populations shift toward Clinton or toward Trump?
Education levels have strong relationships with media-consumption habits, which may have been instrumental in deciding people’s votes, especially given the overall decline in trust in the news media.
Trump’s approach to the campaign — relying on emotional appeals while glossing over policy details — may have resonated more among people with lower education levels as compared with Clinton’s wonkier and more cerebral approach.

politics kept her out of legal harms way, and since there will be an entirely new political landscape for her to navigate on 01/20/2017, she's politically powerless.
if nothing other than a sense of fairness and fidelity to the rule of law, trump should have her prosecuted to the fullest extent.

A car rammed into a crowd at Ohio State University on Monday, and a knife-wielding attacker got out and cut people before being shot to death, authorities said. Ten people were hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
The dead attacker was believed to be an Ohio State student — a Somali refugee who lived near campus, NBC News reported. It said he was a legal permanent resident of the U.S.

That must be terrifying for certain entrenched power brokers of the Democratic Party. What if Trump is right and out of the 24 to 40 million illegals in the US, several million have voted? What if Trump is actually able to one way or the other prevent them from voting? Those power brokers would face imminent irrelevance politically, and that could cascade into the derivative aspects of their wealth and influence. I can imagine that the prospect would incite some desperation and urgency.
I'll be cheering him on. I still consider myself a progressive, leaning Democratic more often than not, but that party needs a rebirth. The purge needs to be brutal in scope or it will all be meaningless.

“I was going to die,” he told this blog back in April 2014. “I was preparing myself.” He desperately needed heart-valve replacement surgery, a procedure he’d been putting off because of his finances. Thanks to Leinhauser’s prodding, he paid a minimal amount for a policy that covered a surgery he never could have paid for.
The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Erik Wemple Blog and various other outlets — the story of this Boyertown, Pa., resident’s recovery was all over the news. Host Chris Hayes at MSNBC did a thing on it. “You wouldn’t have caught me dead watching MSNBC,” Angstadt told this blog at the time. It was a happy occasion: “Obamacare saved his life,” Jill Savory, Angstadt’s widow, tells the Erik Wemple Blog.
Obamacare, however, couldn’t save Angstadt’s livelihood. According to Savory, Angstadt — 57 at the time of his valve-replacement surgery — struggled to push around the logs. “He was so mad,” recalls Savory. “Uh, god, it was just, he loved it — he loved talking to people and harvesting their trees and being in the woods.” Profession and identity were closely aligned: “He was a very stubborn man. He always worked hard for a living, nothing was ever given to him and he frowned upon people on welfare and food stamps,” she says. “He worked his ass off as a logger and made something of himself.”

Yeh, there's no way that Trump can allow ACA to simply be canceled, no matter how adamant and belligerent the Republican congress gets. Too many people are dependent on parts of this law, which they likely don't even realize ARE dependent on ACA - it would be a political disaster. They can pare it down, sure, probably even remove the mandate (which I've proposed since the beginning by the way) but the law itself will not be repealed.

Obviously Amish.
Reports say that he was upset about not having enough prayer space. Seriously maybe that should be a red flag indicative of psychological issues among people of that particular culture. Someone should probably make a study of behavioral clues, specific to immigrants from different cultures, and provide checklists to universities and, perhaps, employers.
As usual, our esteemed host ignores another blatant lie made by the President Elect, who wants to unite the country. Or so he says.

In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally

Snopes.com and PundiFact have already examined this claim, back when it was hot in the right-wing blogosphere, not a statement made by a future U.S. president. The whole thing started with a few tweets by Gregg Phillips, a self-described conservative voter fraud specialist, who started making claims even before data on voter history was actually available in most jurisdictions.

WP questioned the integrity of the Post when I posted that link yesterday. I'm starting to believe he jumped the shark. Oh well, another one bites the dust where facts trump opinion. LOL
What if Trump is right and out of the 24 to 40 million illegals in the US, several million have voted?
Yep, you jumped the shark with that one. Maybe all the dead on the rolls voted also. LOL
the FACT that democrats are pursuing unconstitutional and illegal voting gambits is not a secret to anyone who's paying attention:
Court Strikes Down Virginia Order Restoring Voting Rights to Ex-Felons
“The assertion that a Virginia Governor has the power to grant blanket, group pardons is irreconcilable with the specific requirement in Article V, Section 12 that the Governor communicate to the General Assembly the ‘particulars of every case’ and state his ‘reasons’ for each pardon,” Chief Justice Donald Lemons wrote in the majority opinion. “This requirement implies a specificity and particularity wholly lacking in a blanket, group pardon of a host of unnamed and, to some extent, still unknown number of convicted felons.”
In turn, McAuliffe vowed to individually sign orders restoring voting rights to former felons in the state, beginning with those who had already registered to vote, saying the court’s decision “placed Virginia as an outlier in the struggle for civil and human rights.”
“I will expeditiously sign nearly 13,000 individual orders to restore the fundamental rights of the citizens who have had their rights restored and registered to vote,” he said in a statement on Friday. “And I will continue to sign orders until I have completed restoration for all 200,000 Virginians.”
http://time.com/4420469/virginia-felon-voting-restoration-unconstitutional/
so if a sitting governor is willing to go this far to break election laws, trump's claim is in fact not that much of a stretch.

we are supposed to take the word of left-leaning snopes and pundifact as the gospel truth, while questioning a conservative who focuses on instances of voter fraud.
and by the way, the calls for a recount are based upon that which does not exist -
VOTER FRAUD.
how the fuck does a liberal manage to stumble through each day with so many contradictions knotted up in their head?
How goes the Hillary attempt to silence the voices of 60 million plus voters?
There is at least some evidence of illegals voting http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0261379414000973, the question being, how many?
I am on record as opposing almost every form of voter restriction, because potentially impacting the voting rights of citizens requires extraordinary cause. But I do not choose to become willfully blind to abuse and fraud, which also impacts those rights. We need careful deliberation, acknowledging the facts on both sides of that equation.
The President Elect is in a better position than journalists to have information about the vote. While you cannot accept his opinion without question, it behooves us to take it seriously.
We need careful deliberation, acknowledging the facts on both sides of that equation.

we need a national voter ID law. period.
You're coming around to my way of thinking. Add an embedded RSA encrypted chip with a private key and implement electronic voting with it. No more recount games, no more questions about illegal votes.
What are the odds that everything was done correctly for recounts even in those 100 precincts in PA? I am skeptical that even attention-hungry citizens will swear an affidavit - under penalty of perjury (5 years) - that they have specific knowledge of fraudulent voting. As required by the statute. In all probability they signed a generic template sent around by Stein, or by her lawyer Elias (Soros lawyer on loan to Clinton on loan to Stein). No doubt the generic template alleges some nebulous fraud "to knowledge and belief" and other legal waffling, which falls short of specific knowledge. IF they all even signed and notarized it. It will be surprising if more than a handful of voting districts are actually recounted.
The lawsuit for a statewide recount is a non-starter, as everyone knows including Stein and Elias. They're just trying to seed doubts and disenfranchisement at this point.

follow the money. shit, if i could kick up a swirl of bullshit controversy for a couple weeks to be guaranteed of putting $7 MIL in MY pocket, i'd even be tempted.
For Stein yes, the money is likely an inducement. I'm speaking of Clinton's motivations.
clinton's motivations are a cut of the $7 MIL. her influence is tapped and she needs to bring in the cash to keep running the foundation racket.
Don't you think it's more likely that the millions were laundered through surrogates from the Clinton Foundation and/or various PAC's? It's not very credible for that much to be raised legitimately from small donors, not by Jill Stein.
Clinton's are showing that they still have influence.

oh, i'm sure that accounted for a sizable portion. but i would submit that a bunch of it was pure grass roots. there is a ton of liberal angst out there (along with some measure of straight-up mental illness) meaning that the $7 MIL is probably not much of a stretch.
one thing is for sure - the clinton's were a net recipient of some amount of $$$. you can be sure they didn't actually contribute to the effort.
