GOP edges in front in latest Generic Ballot poll

Republicans have erased the Democratic advantage on the generic congressional ballot in a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll that, for the first time since April, also shows President Donald Trump’s approval rating equaling the percentage of voters who disapprove of his job performance. Fully 39 percent of registered voters say they would support the GOP candidate for Congress in their district, while 38 percent would back the Democratic candidate. Nearly a quarter of voters, 23 percent, are undecided.

Well, you know that you may not know that the ship is sinking until the water shows in your room.

The Democrats are increasingly motivated by the President. That alone has little impact on the vote unless the turmoil in the White House continues down this path.

A, big and difficult to get accurate numbers is the women's vote in the suburbs. Virginia, Alabama and now in Florida. A special election for a legislative position, in a distinct that Trump won by a narrow margin. The Fake New Washington Post reported:

SARASOTA, Fla. — Democrats continued a streak of special election wins with a victory along the Gulf Coast of Florida on Tuesday, the 36th red-to-blue switch in a state legislative race since the 2016 election.

Democrat Margaret Good triumphed by seven points in the Sarasota-based 72nd District, defeating Republican candidate James Buchanan in an area that backed Donald Trump for president in 2016 by more than four points.

The upset is likely to reverberate through the two major parties as they gear up for the midterm election cycle. Although Republicans have been buoyed in recent weeks by the sense that their tax legislation will be popular among voters, and by new polling showing that Trump’s popularity has ticked up, Tuesday’s outcome offers yet another data point that voter enthusiasm lies with Democrats.

“They’re winning elections in places where they shouldn’t be,” said Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager, at a Sunday afternoon rally for the Republican candidate. “We’ve seen them win statehouse seats in Wisconsin. We’ve seen them win big mayor’s races in New Hampshire. Fifty seats have already changed hands, from Republicans to Democrats, since President Trump took office. Make no mistake: The Democrats are unified.”

On the economy, well inflation is on the horizon. The relatively small wage increases, can easily be moot. The almost total reduction of unionization has given the corporate interests in control of wages, outside of some manufacturing industry, some auto manufacturing and the still heavily unionized construction industry, rising food and other essentials, the improving economy may not have your desire for support of the Republicans.

But from your link, this deeply felt dislike for the current (faces) in the Democratic party.

But Pelosi’s numbers are more negative: Only 28 percent of voters have a favorable impression of her, while nearly half, 49 percent, view her unfavorably.

Lloyd Blankfein: Economy is 'higher' under Trump than if Clinton won

By Matt Egan February 14, 2018: 10:50 AM ET
President Trump's closing campaign ad portrayed Lloyd Blankfein as a globalist villain. Perhaps the Goldman Sachs CEO will play the role of hero next time.
Blankfein, who backed Hillary Clinton in the election, is giving Trump credit for the soaring American economy.
"If the president didn't win, and Hillary Clinton won ... I bet you the economy is higher today than it otherwise would be," Blankfein told CNN's Christine Romans in an interview that aired on Wednesday.
Blankfein was responding to a question about how much credit Trump should get for the stock market surge and stronger economic growth."

Trump lawyer didn't say Trump did not reimburse him, but said...

Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen has left open the possibility that Trump reimbursed him for the Stormy Daniels payment

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer admitted that during the presidential campaign, he paid $130,000 to a porn star who claims she had an affair with Trump.

The lawyer, Michael Cohen, said neither the campaign nor the Trump Organization had reimbursed him.

But that leaves open a possibility: that Trump himself reimbursed him.

Trump lawyer Michael Cohen issued a statement on Tuesday in which he admitted to paying $130,000 to the porn star Stormy Daniels, née Stephanie Clifford.

Daniels has previously alleged she had an affair with President Donald Trump, though since receiving the payment she's been doing a media tour while studiously refusing to confirm or deny her previous allegations about Trump.

If you read Cohen's statement closely, it doesn't quite say what a lot of people are taking it to mean: That Cohen made the $130,000 payment himself, and was not reimbursed. Here's what Cohen said:

"In a private transaction in 2016, I used my own personal funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to Ms. Stephanie Clifford. Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly. The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone."

He denies the Trump Organization or the Trump campaign reimbursed him. That leaves open the possibility that someone else reimbursed him.

For example, Donald Trump could have reimbursed him.
_______
Which of course he did.
Thus, he will not deny it.

Sources close to Stormy Daniels tell The Blast that her legal team notified President Trump’s legal team, including attorney Michael Cohen, that they are in violation of the agreement they made back in 2016.

Daniels is apparently “ready to spill all the tea regarding her alleged affair with Donald Trump” because Cohen allegedly breached the contract he negotiated with the porn star.

A manager for the adult film actress confirmed to the Associated Press that Daniels believes Trump’s lawyer invalidated a non-disclosure agreement by publicly discussing the payment.

DEMOCRATS MAINTAIN SOLID LEAD IN GENERIC BALLOT

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds Democrats have a solid 49% to 41% lead on the generic congressional ballot, although that’s down a shade from December when it was 51% to 40%.

Beyond their overall lead, they’re also benefiting from an enthusiasm advantage: 65% of Hillary Clinton voters say they’re “very excited” to vote in the election this fall, compared to 58% of Donald Trump voters.

For comparison, the FiveThirtyEight polling average has Democrats leading 46.8% to 40.1%.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham, just hours after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to murder 17 people at a Florida high school, praised the weapon as “so safe.”

Ingraham and her guest, Aaron Cohen, criticized Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) for suggesting the powerful weapon is too widely available. Cohen said that Murphy was “not qualified to assess threat” or “manage risk.”

A few minutes later, Cohen explained that the AR-15 looks like an M4, a fully automatic rifle used by the military. “It looks like a menacing M4… not even close,” Cohen said, with Ingraham expressing approval.

Cohen added that the AR-15 “shoots very straight” and is “actually safer because you have a less likelihood of sporadic fire or hitting innocent people.”

“It’s actually a very safe weapon,” Cohen concluded.
The AR-15 has been used in numerous other mass murders.

One sentence. We already have banned the ownership of fully automatic weapons. It is highly regulated.

I don't think that putting a ban on the military weapons, like the AR-15 is an infringement upon the rights guaranteed by the second amendment to the constitution of the United States.

I am fairly liberal in my view of gun regulations, but you have to be realistic about it. There are 300 million guns in the USA. About a quarter of us own half of them (the other half are owned by the 3% gun nuts). So, on average, gun owners have 4 or 5 of them.

Bottom line is, pick any three adults at random and chances are that one of them already owns 4 or 5 guns. How on Earth would you expect that some law banning the sale of a particular style of sports rifle could have any impact whatsoever on the availability of firearms to any individual? Even if you banned ALL sales of ALL guns, we still have more than enough to supply generations. It's pointless, a waste of energy, and a distraction from pursuing real solutions to these problems.

School shootings are a much worse problem in the USA than any other country, but we're NOT the only country where it happens. How school killings in the US stack up against 36 other countries put together

I don't think this list includes attacks by extremists and certain ruthless military attacks, which I suspect add up to even greater numbers. We need to be looking at how to stop these people. Warm fuzzies from reducing the number of guns in circulation will only last until the next incident, because that's not going to help.

Pretty much, background checks were WAY up in 2016 (27,500 vs 21,000 in 2014).

I think it also tracks with improved disposable income though.

Again, look at it objectively. There are 5-10 million AR-15's in the USA. If a shooter can't find an AR-15 out of all those millions of them, even common semi-auto handguns have high rates of fire. Lacking an AR-15 could not prevent a mass-shooting incident.

Again, look at it objectively.

I have....High cap magazines also are a problem...Yes there are many out there already....Making them a federal offense to own them is the only alternative....BTW.....a tube feed 22 can hold 20+ rounds...blast to plink with, but dangerous itself with that many rounds....Semi auto hand guns with maxi magazines are also a problem a normal glock 40 can hold 14 rounds or so and can be reloaded relatively quickly with a little practice....a high cap mag can hold 33 rounds.....Yep....they all need attention IMHO>>>>>It is not an easy thing to solve....but you gotta start somewhere!!!

Liberals how many mass shootings happens at home schooled kids of Bitter Clingers- Dispicable - Tax Crumb lickers?

William Hamilton said...

How is it a problem? Someone shoots 7 times and then takes a second or two to change magazines, as opposed to 13 rounds? How does that actually save anyone in those situations? Someone gets an extra second to get away, good for him but not a change in how many shots are fired. To me, high capacity magazines are just another red herring.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really even like guns, not like recreational owners and hunters etc. For me, the singular purpose of a handgun is, literally, to shoot a person when there are no other defensive options. I've got zero interest in owning higher capacity mags, if 7-10 shots isn't enough. But eliminating them is not a solution, it's not even a start IMO.

Israel figured it out 40 years ago. Harden the target.

It's about the only solution that would work.

In 1974, Israel endured the Ma’alot Massacre in which “Palestinian” terrorists took 115 people hostage at Netiv Meir Elementary School. Twenty-two children and three others were killed and 68 injured. Israel now requires schools with 100 or more students to have a guard posted. The civilian police force handles the entire security system of all schools from kindergarten through college. The Ministry of Education funds shelters and fences, reinforces school buses, and hires and trains guards.

Guards don’t just stand around. They check everyone entering, and engage threats.

This sure will work and add billions to the budget and deficits. For someone who bitched about the puny NPR cost, I am sure this would be embraced by all you tax hating, freedom lost R's who refuse to administer the real problem....guns and mental illness.....

And how is that a problem???? A strategy meeting sure sounds nefarious to the weak minded idiots like you KD..

Most attention, so far, has focused on the first two paragraphs of the email, which describe a meeting that occurred around two weeks earlier. The participants included Barack Obama, Joe Biden, James Comey, Sally Yates–who turns up like a bad penny whenever skulduggery is afoot–and Rice:

President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the Intelligence and law enforcement communities “by the book”. The President stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.

Wow, sure doesn't match up to what you claimed asshole....All the news altered to what I am told it should say.....alternate facts, caught again....

Yep we have almost half of the world's civilian firearms in fact. Why do you think that banning AR-15's will change that?

I get so tired of explaining this. There were lots and lots of machine guns in Chicago during the Chicago criminal gangs era. When machine guns were made illegal, and criminals could do serious prison time just for having one in his or her possession, the number of deaths caused by machine guns dropped astonomically. Even the number of machine guns in existence plummeted.

If semi automatic weapons were made illegal, the number of people who would not risk serious prosecution simply for illegally owning one would also plummet, as would the existence of such weapons.

They could be turned in to be converted into legal weapons.

I think they adjusted. I dare say the murder rate in Chicago is greater today than at any time during the 1920's.

They would simply adjust again. You're not solving the problem, just putting a veneer on it.

James, didn't ANYthing stick with you the last time?

You don't remember AT ALL, that there were NO "machine gun deaths" to have "a dramatic drop" from in the decades before that ban? Oh, maybe ONE death in a year so it dropped from ONE to ZERO. Except, when you look at the real world, there were machine gun fatalities caused by POLICE, not citizens.

Good grief. You couldn't have found a better example of why banning a weapon does NOT reduce violent death.

wphamilton said...

Didn't I start in THIS one by suggesting that we stop the people from killing themselves - and others - rather than obsessing on the guns?

yeah, you did. because you looked at the numbers and did the math.

liberal proposals fail the logic test right out of the gate because they're 99% emotion (we must do SOMETHING!) and 1% lick spittle.

exhibit A: look at the pederast. his solution - "ban semi auto weapons." well, that leaves me without a deer rifle. so what has he accomplished? he's disarmed me, making himself feel righteous and proud and satisfied that he did "something" in the process. who has he actually protected from further gun violence. no one.

and anyone stupid enough to blame the NRA has no business being part of any gun control conversation. they don't possess the intellectual candlepower to light a one year old's birthday cake.

[1934 was a] year in which the United States faced unprecedented challenges from a new kind of gun and a new kind of criminal, and the country responded with new laws.

The weapon in question was the tommy gun. Named for its inventor, John T. Thompson, the tommy gun is the kind of short machine gun you see in old-timey mob movies, usually with a cylindrical drum of bullets hanging from the barrel. And the tommy gun really was the weapon of choice for mobsters and bandits, who were a major part of the American consciousness during Prohibition and the Depression.

“By the late 1920s, through popular culture, through news reports, through movies, you have this rising crime rate where criminals are using weapons like the tommy gun, like the sawed-off shotgun,” says Robert Spitzer, a professor of political science at SUNY Cortland and the author of several books on the history of gun control.

“A cry arose in the country to regulate these weapons,” he says.

And that cry sounds a lot like the arguments we hear today.

“Why should desperadoes, brazen outlaws of the period, be permitted to purchase these weapons of destruction?” wrote the editors of the Waco News-Tribune in 1933 after the Texas—yes, Texas—statehouse passed a ban on fully automatic weapons.

When New York state banned submachine guns, the Ironwood Daily Globe in Ironwood, Michigan, called it a “a very excellent law” and went on to say, “It is hard to think of any good reason why every other state in the union should not copy it at once.”

That was also in 1933, the same year that New York’s previous governor, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became president of the United States. Roosevelt favored a registration law for machine guns. And he also favored a new approach to how the federal government interacted in Americans’ everyday lives.

When crimes involving tommy guns began making headlines, many lawmakers wanted to restrict the machine gun's use to soldiers and law enforcement....

The National Firearms Act of 1934 required registration and a tax of $200 (almost $3,600 in today’s dollars) on all so-called gangster weapons, a category that included the tommy gun and sawed-off shotguns. While gangsters might’ve been able to pay the fine, they weren’t keen to be registered, which meant getting fingerprinted and photographed. This created a new legal loophole for the Feds to bust mobsters on whom pinning charges would’ve been otherwise difficult; simply having an unregistered gun was enough to prompt an arrest.

James said...

This doesn’t mean the 1930s were a time when any gun control laws could pass. “There was profound opposition,” says UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, author of Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America. The National Rifle Association (NRA) was instrumental in removing provisions from the 1934 law that would’ve required the licensing of handguns. And while the Second Amendment wasn’t often evoked in the debate over the law, Attorney General Homer Cummings was up front about the fact that, in an effort to stay in line with the Constitution and prevailing thoughts on the federal role in policing the public, the legislation only taxed and regulated guns and did not ban them.

Despite the opposition, the legislation passed.

“It was very effective,” Spitzer says of the National Firearms Act. “When people shrug their shoulders and say gun laws don’t work, all you have to do is point to the 1934 law.”

State laws went even further in this time. Spitzer has chronicled how many states banned gangster weapons outright. And a handful of states even banned semiautomatic firearms, which, unlike the tommy gun, require a shooter to pull the trigger for every round fired. The military-style rifle used in many modern mass shootings, the AR-15, is a semiautomatic gun.

The mainstream debate about gun control occasionally came to the fore over the following decades, but Spitzer and Winkler say it wasn’t until the late 1970s that it took on the energy we still see today. That’s when the NRA became more politically powerful. State laws were loosened or repealed. Gun technology advanced and American politics shifted. In 1939, the Supreme Court had upheld the National Firearms Act. In 2008, the court struck down Washington, D.C.’s gun regulations.

William Hamilton said...

So the gist of that wall of words is that machine guns were STILL legal after 1034, and there were regulations aimed at tracking and identifying mobsters. They weren't banned, James. And the mobsters weren't broken by gun registration.

Is it your position that one or two machine gun fatalities per year, after the Chicago mobsters were handled, until they WERE banned is a huge amount? Or is the game to just ignore those facts?
