My, how the mighty have fallen?

Rather listen to Snooki or just rather look at Snooki?
Earlier today, NJ Advance Media reported that Hillary Clinton was being paid $25,000 to speak at Rutgers University, for a speech about "politics, American democracy and her role in shaping women's political history." To some, this sounds like a nice chunk of change, especially considering that Clinton probably talks for free about "politics, American democracy and her role in shaping women's political history" every five minutes.
But to those who are familiar with the celebrity speaking circuit, it’s basically bubkes. Chump change. A drop in the DNC bucket.
Consider that in 2015, no less a statesman than Matthew McConaughey was paid $135,000 (plus travel and expenses — alright, alright, alright!) to speak at the University of Houston, and that Katie Couric cleared $110,000 in 2006 from the University of Oklahoma (pre-recession, sure, but still impressive!).
In fact, Rutgers has a history of shelling out considerably more that $25,000 to notable speakers. Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison made $30,000 in 2011. Bill Moyers received $35,000 to speak in 2015. And — wait for it — Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi was given $32,000 for a Rutgers appearance that offered the sage advice, “Study hard, but party harder.”

Reminds me of the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" where Ben Kingsley  (who is portraying a former Chess Master fallen from grace) is humiliatingly agreeing to a $30 speaking fee over the phone, while Joe Mangegna (who is portraying the father of a young chess prodigy) watches on. I can almost hear Hillary asking Rutgers, "do you have any idea how much I am accustom to getting for a speach"?

Judge denies Stormy Daniels' motion to depose Pres. Trump & Michael Cohen
By Javier De Diego and MJ Lee, CNN
Mar 30, 2018
(CNN) - A federal judge in California put a temporary stop Thursday to efforts by Stormy Daniels' attorney to depose President Donald Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen over a $130,000 payout from Cohen to the porn star before the 2016 election.
Judge S. James Otero of the US District Court for the Central District of California denied the motion for an expedited trial and discovery process, saying Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, was "premature" in making the motion because Trump and Essential Consultants LLC, the company established by Cohen to pay Daniels the $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair between her and Trump, have not yet filed a petition to compel arbitration, which they have stated they're going to do.
In his decision, Otero admonished the parties, writing that "instant litigation is not the most important matter on the court's docket." He also vacated a hearing date previously set for April 30.
Avenatti told CNN's Wolf Blitzer later Thursday that he does not view the ruling as a setback and is intent on waiting for Trump and Cohen "to file their motion to compel arbitration" before "immediately (refiling) our motion."
"This does not bode well for the President or Mr. Cohen, and all indications are that when this motion is heard on the merits, we're going to get the discovery and we're going to get the trial we've asked for," Avenatti said.
In the motion he filed earlier this week, Avenatti requested to depose both Trump and Cohen, who was added this week as a defendant in the lawsuit, for "no greater than two hours."
The request also asked for "targeted requests for the production of documents directed to Mr. Trump and Mr. Cohen on various topics relating to the hush agreement."
Avenatti laid out questions he'd like answered, including whether Trump knew about the hush agreement and the scope of his involvement, where the payment came from, what Cohen's role was, and whether Trump consented to the agreement and was involved in efforts to silence Daniels "to benefit his presidential campaign by preventing voters from hearing Plaintiff speak publicly."
Cohen's spokesman David Schwartz said in a statement that the motion was "frivolous, untimely and premature on its face."
"I'm not at all surprised by the judge's decision to deny the motion to compel depositions of Michael Cohen and Donald Trump," Schwartz said. "This frivolous motion was denied with 48 hours of filing and I'm pleased it was denied."
The motion is the latest in the legal battle between Daniels, an adult film actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, and Cohen, Trump, and the limited liability company Cohen created to pay her to keep quiet about the alleged affair with Trump more than a decade ago.
Daniels said she was pressed to sign the document, and her legal team now says the agreement is invalid because it was never signed by Trump.
On Monday, Daniels' legal team amended her lawsuit to include a defamation claim against Cohen. Daniels' friend and fellow adult film actress Alana Evans, who has publicly tried to corroborate Daniels' claims of an affair, also said she will file her own defamation claims by the end of the month.
Trump continues to deny that he had an affair with Daniels, White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Monday afternoon.

As President Donald Trump's approval ratings ebb and flow, a new poll reveals a negative view of the commander in chief among America's youngest populations.

The new AP/MTV poll reveals a slim 33 percent of Americans ages 15 to 34 approve of Trump's White House performance. This response comes as Trump's weekly approval stood at 39 percent with Gallup last week. His daily approval with Rasmussen stands at 47 percent as of Friday.

In the wake of the deadly Parkland school shooting in February that reignited the conversation around gun control, Trump has faced increased pressure to act on public policy that affects the country's youngest voters. He hosted a roundtable discussion on gun violence and school safety at the White House, but that might not be enough to please voters seeking concrete legislative movement.

"He doesn’t seem to be really for women. He doesn’t seem to be for Black Lives Matter. He doesn’t seem to be for DACA," 23-year-old Meghan Carnes told AP. "He doesn’t seem to be for the kids worried about guns. It’s extremely disappointing to have a president who doesn’t seem to care."

Loretta said...

"Donald Trump has been flogging the truth and twisting facts since the day he arrived in the Oval Office. But anyone who expected more candor from him as president than on the campaign trail was criminally naive. The real mystery nowadays is why the media seeks to expunge the falsehoods of prior presidents.

"Trump's Lies versus Obama's" was the headline in a Sunday Review New York Times piece aiming to drive a final coffin nail into Trump's credibility. The Times claimed Trump has already "told nearly six times as many falsehoods as Obama did during his entire (8-year) presidency." The columnists seem so distraught that it is surprising the article is not in all caps.

But the Times' list of falsehoods is itself a charade with gaping Montana-sized holes.

Has the Times forgotten about Edward Snowden? Obama responded to Snowden's stunning revelations of the National Security Agency's vacuuming up millions of Americans' personal data by going on the Jay Leno Show and proclaiming: "There is no spying on Americans." But NSA's definition of "terrorist suspect" was so ludicrously broad that it includes anyone "searching the web for suspicious stuff" (maybe including presidential lies). Obama's verbal defenses of NSA spying collapsed like a row of houses of cards."

Loretta said...

"In early 2009, Obama visited Mexico and, in a spiel calling for the renewal of the assault weapon ban, asserted that "more than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States." This vastly overstated the actual problem, since that statistic measured only firearms that Mexican authorities sent to the U.S. for tracing.

His administration then acted as if 90 percent was a goal, not a lie, launching a secret Fast and Furious gunwalking operation masterminded by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agency, deluging Mexican drug gangs with high-powered weapons. At least 150 Mexicans were killed by guns illegally sent south of the border with Obama administration approval.

Obama's animosity to the Second Amendment spurred some of his most farcical whoppers. In July 2016, Obama asserted: "We flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than get his hands on a computer or even a book." Glocks are the Lexus of handguns, and a person could buy hundreds of volumes of used books via Amazon for the price of a Glock."

Loretta said...

"A year earlier, Obama bewailed "neighborhoods where it's easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable." Obama never offered a single example of a locale where carrots are rarer than .38 Specials. But his false claim helped frighten clueless suburbanites to support Obama's anti-gun agenda.

The Times column lists only one Obama falsehood on the Affordable Care Act: "If you like your doctor, you'll be able to keep your doctor; if you like your health care plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan." Obama's dozens of variations and recitals of this lie were disregarded. The Times also ignored the fact that the ObamaCare legislation was carefully crafted to con Congress and the public. As its intellectual godfather, MIT economist Jonathan Gruber, explained:

"Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically, that was really, really critical to get this thing to pass."

Loretta said...

"The To revile Trump, the column also struggles mightily to resurrect George W. Bush's credibility. The Times concedes that Bush sought to justify attacking Iraq "by talking about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, which did not exist." This vastly understates the role of official deceit in hustling that war.

In early 2003, Bush's speeches continually warned, "If war is forced upon us...." There was never any truth to war being "forced upon us" (except by the White House) but that phrase helped Bush panic audiences still jittery after 9/11. The Center for Public Integrity, which has won two Pulitzer Prizes, compiled a list of 935 lies by Bush and his top appointees on Iraq. Perhaps to preserve the column's lofty tone, the Times omitted any mention of Bush's four years of brazenly false denials of authorizing a worldwide torture regime.

The Times' comparison of Trump and other presidents implies that all lies are equally damnable. The Times ignored all the Obama false promises used to justify his troop surge in Afghanistan (which resulted in more than a thousand dead American troops with nothing to show for the sacrifice) and bombing Libya (which now has slave markets). But killing vast numbers of human beings should require more due diligence than assertions on federal spending for peanut subsidies."

caliphate4vr said...

Poll: Young people think Trump is racist, dishonest, 'mentally unfit for office'

Pedo that makes you and he the same!

Loretta said...

"The Times asserts that Trump is seeking to "to make truth irrelevant," which "is extremely damaging to democracy." But democracy has also been subverted by the media's long history of ignoring or absolving presidential lies. For more than a century, the press has groveled the worst when presidents dragged the nation into the biggest perils.

Trump's lies deserve to be exposed and condemned. But Bush's and Obama's lies help explain why only 20 percent of Americans trusted the federal government at the end of Obama's reign. Pretending America recently had a Golden Age of honest politicians encourages the delusion that toppling Trump is all that is necessary to make the federal government great again."

No he didn't, it's just one lie among the thousands that people who hated Obama circulated among themselves until they believed it.

When Obama was a Senator, he was asked about clean technologies and greenhouse gas emissions. " So what we have to do then is we have to figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it? If we can’t, then we’re going to still be working on alternatives.”

and then said that new coal power plants which did NOT capture carbon emissions would go bankrupt. A hypothetical regarding disincentives to use older technology, NOT a "vow to bankrupt coal".

Why are you folks even still talking about it, when no one but you even brought it up? Is it YOUR idea that if you can repeat enough made-up lies attributed to Obama, then it makes it OK for Trump to lie about, well, everything he talks about?

Politicians lie, postulate, posture, exaggerate, and make semantically ludicrous arguments every day. Didn't Nancy Pelosi suggest that people were going to die if we passed the new tax law? How many different Presidents have in some form or another "denied having sexual relations with that woman".

But there is a difference between saying you know exactly where the WMD are in order to justify a war, or telling people that they can keep their doctor and insurance if they want in order to pass a bad law....

and when someone claims that they had the biggest inauguration crowd or brags about a statistic that isn't entirely true.

Certain lies "DO" actually mean more than others.

But I believe that the issue for many, is the amount of time certain people spend attempting to "fact check" everything the President says, as if most of it matters. It becomes an obsession that results in almost no actual tangible or practical value.

Loretta said...

Paul Manafort, a mysterious Russian jet, and a secret meeting
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare via email
By Greg Walters Mar 30, 2018
In August 2016, a private jet linked to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska traveled from Moscow to Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. The Gulfstream G550 (registration M-ALAY) landed shortly after midnight and, according to publicly available flight records, flew back to Moscow that same afternoon. Deripaska, 50, is the founder of Basic Element, a Russian industrial conglomerate with massive holdings in aluminum, energy, and construction. With an estimated net worth of $6 billion, he can afford to send a private jet across the globe whenever he wants.

Still, according to a source familiar with the matter, that August flight has caught the attention of congressional investigators, in part because of its timing.

The jet arrived within hours of a meeting in nearby Manhattan between Paul Manafort, then chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, and Konstantin Kilimnik. Kilimnik spent over a decade as Manafort’s translator and fixer in Ukraine. Weeks earlier, Manafort had emailed his old associate and told him to extend an offer of "private briefings" to Deripaska, according to The Washington Post.

Congressional investigators looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election are now probing the relationship between Manafort, Kilimnik, and Deripaska, according to two people familiar with the matter. The jet’s brief trip to New Jersey raises fresh questions about the relationship between the three men during the 2016 presidential campaign. Deripaska is believed to have close ties with the Kremlin. Kilimnik has been widely reported to be the unnamed person identified in court filings by special counsel Robert Mueller's office this week as having ties to Russian intelligence — a relationship Kilimnik has long denied.

Manafort has since been named in a 32-count indictment by Mueller’s team on charges including bank fraud and filing false tax returns related to his work for the former government of Ukraine.

A spokesperson for Deripaska confirmed the Gulfstream jet’s flight to New Jersey to VICE News, but said the trip had nothing to do with Manafort’s offer of briefings, which the spokesperson said Deripaska never received. “The passengers of the flights during the time period in early August 2016 were Mr. Deripaska’s family only,” the spokesperson, who asked not to be named, wrote in an email to VICE News. “As it was previously stated, Mr. Deripaska had no communications, meetings, briefings, or other interaction with Mr. Manafort during, after, or in the run-up to the 2016 Presidential Election. Thus, we repeat that any publications implying that Mr. Deripaska directly or indirectly communicated with Mr. Manafort in 2016 would be a false statement of fact.”

“PERSON A HAS TIES TO A RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE ”
On Tuesday night, prosecutors working for Mueller released a court filing saying that an unnamed associate of Manafort’s “has ties to a Russian intelligence service and had such ties in 2016.” According to the filing, Rick Gates, who held various senior positions in the Trump campaign and was Manafort’s longtime business partner, said the associate “was a former Russian Intelligence Officer with the GRU,” Russia’s military intelligence agency. The associate, referred to simply as “Person A,” isn’t identified, but the detailed description provided by prosecutors lines up closely with Konstantin Kilimnik.

Kilimnik didn’t respond to emailed requests for comment, and two people who know him, including a reporter in Ukraine who was in touch with Kilimnik in 2017, told VICE News that he has stopped responding to requests for interviews in recent months. Yet Kilimnik is known to have been in direct email contact with Manafort as recently as late November 2017,

TRUMP'S LIES VS. OBAMA'S LIES, according to the New York Times

We applied the same conservative standard to Obama and Trump, counting only demonstrably and substantially false statements. The result: Trump is unlike any other modern president. He seems virtually indifferent to reality, often saying whatever helps him make the case he’s trying to make.

In his first 10 months in office, he has told 103 separate untruths, many of them repeatedly. Obama told 18 over his entire eight-year tenure. That’s an average of about two a year for Obama and about 124 a year for Trump.

Separately, we have updated our earlier list of Trump's lies, which also includes repeated falsehoods. This article counts only distinct falsehoods for both Trump and Obama.

If we had used a less strict standard, Trump would look even worse by comparison. He makes misleading statements and mild exaggerations – about economic statistics, his political opponents and many other subjects – far more often than Obama. We left out any statement that could be plausibly defended even if many people would disagree with the president's interpretation. We also left out modest quantitative errors, such as Trump's frequent imprecision with numbers.

We have used the word “lies” again here, as we did in our original piece. If anything, though, the word is unfair to Obama and Bush. When they became aware that they had been saying something untrue, they stopped doing it. Obama didn’t continue to claim that all Americans would be able to keep their existing health insurance under Obamacare, for example, and Bush changed the way he spoke about Iraq’s weapons capability.

Trump is different. When he is caught lying, he will often try to discredit people telling the truth, be they judges, scientists, F.B.I. or C.I.A. officials, journalists or members of Congress. Trump is trying to make truth irrelevant. It is extremely damaging to democracy, and it’s not an accident. It’s core to his political strategy.

As for Obama: His falsehoods tended to be attempts to make his own policies look better or to overstate a problem he was trying to solve. In a few cases, they seemed to be careless exaggerations he avoided repeating.

Over all, Obama rarely told demonstrable untruths as president. And he appears to have become more careful over time. We counted six straight-up falsehoods in his first year in office. Across his entire second four-year term, we counted the same number, six, only one of which came in his final year in office.

In all, we found 18 different bald untruths from Obama during his presidency. Trump told his 18th separate untruth in his third full week in office, and his list keeps growing.

In fact, Trump tells falsehoods about Obama and his administration more often than Obama told falsehoods about all subjects. Since his inauguration, Trump has told 10 separate untruths about Obama, including false allegations of wiretapping and false descriptions of Obamacare. We counted only two falsehoods Obama told about Bush.

So who has told more lies: Barack Obama or Donald Trump?

Both presidents have told lies. But one seems to have told more lies than the other. Politifact reports that 15% of the statements by Donald Trump that it evaluated qualified as “pants on fire” level lies.

Conversely, the publication found that just 2% of the Barack Obama statements that it fact-checked qualified as “pants on fire” lies.

For both presidents, that’s only the lies that Politifact found were “pants on fire” false, not including statements that were just “false,” even “mostly false,” or only “half true.”

Similarly, The New York Times catalogued the lies told by Barack Obama and Donald Trump. “We applied the same conservative standard to Obama and Trump, counting only demonstrably and substantially false statements,” the Times noted. The result? The Times found that Trump often says “whatever helps him make the case he’s trying to make. In his first 10 months in office, he has told 103 separate untruths, many of them repeatedly. Obama told 18 over his entire eight-year tenure. That’s an average of about two a year for Obama and about 124 a year for Trump.”

During the Atlantic City casino boom in the 1980s, Philadelphia cabinet-builder Edward Friel Jr. landed a $400,000 contract to build the bases for slot machines, registration desks, bars and other cabinets at Harrah's at Trump Plaza.

The family cabinetry business, founded in the 1940s by Edward’s father, finished its work in 1984 and submitted its final bill to the general contractor for the Trump Organization, the resort’s builder.

Edward’s son, Paul, who was the firm’s accountant, still remembers the amount of that bill more than 30 years later: $83,600. The reason: the money never came. “That began the demise of the Edward J. Friel Company… which has been around since my grandfather,” he said.

Most troubling are those wherein he implements policies that are overtly idiotic and harmful. But he also demonstrates his inability to govern by his appointments to critical White House and cabinet positions. These include his daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared, Ben Carson, Rick Perry, Scott Pruitt, etc.

Now CNN is reporting that Trump has found a replacement for his departing White House Communications Director Hope Hicks. And he has managed to select another person who completely lacks the requisite skills and experience to do the job. According to CNN Trump has answered the question of Hicks' successor:

in other words - it was no big fucking deal. and not one of my classmates went into the military. the vietnam issue was too raw. in fact, only one guy that i remember in the entire school went into the military during my time there, and he was a year ahead of me and got into west point.

so rog, stop making it sound like you were some towering fucking intellect. you weren't. and aren't. not then, not now. what you achieved was the academic equivalent of coloring inside the lines.

He's picked a war advocate to be his national intelligence adviser.

Yet, all you have is alky alky.

You are a fucking moron.

Roger - they did the same thing with me when I attempted to join the Officers Candidate School for the Marines. While the Marines might have the lowest qualifications for their enlisted men, they demand the highest of their officers.

Of the five people who took the marine military test that day, I was the only one who scored high enough to get into the school. The other four were told they could enlist and write their own ticket as an enlisted man, but that they didn't qualify for the school. Those four included two from the University of Minnesota, a friend from the Minnesota State college I attended, as well as member of a prestigious local private college that was nearly impossible to get into.

I also failed my physical because I had once been medicated for eczema in High School. I was told that the marines would not accept anyone who might need any sort of medications while on duty, as providing such a medication could be difficult in combat situations.

(Ironically many feel that the same military should now find it acceptable to take on a transgender, provide them with a surgery, as well as provide them with daily hormone treatments to assist. They should accommodate all that, but not a couple tubes of Cortizone for me which I didn't even necessarily need)

They made an appointment for me to see the dermatologist to get my medical waiver approved, but by the time I got in, the program had filled.

But you see the truth is, Roger... I don't have to pretend to be smart because I was told I got a high score on a test. I was a top high school student. I got scholarship money to go to college. My 11th grade PSAT (prelim or test SAT) score was so high I didn't need to take an actual SAT or ACT.

I have a college degree. I made it through four semesters of calculus and another two semesters of math above and beyond that. I took high level science classes (and even managed to toss in some philosophy, psychology, and sociology in my fifth year of college while I was avoiding graduating). I made the Deans List. I had a good G.P.A.

I work in an industry where all of my co-workers are college graduates with high levels of technical skills and technical training. I have performed well above average competing against other people who are well above average.

So Roger...

My accomplishments during my life suggest my intelligence level. I don't have to demand that some test score from 30 years ago matters. I don't have to justify not going to college. I don't have to pretend that my job is something that it's not.

all of us regulars can comprehend your abilities, alky. all too well since those abilities, or lack thereof, are on display every day around here.

and btw, i wouldn't count your TDS as an 'ability.' it's more of an affliction than anything.

and alky, if you were 50 years younger you'd be snacking on tide pods like it was your fucking job.

I was very good at my job and life. I have been given a second chance of life and I'm not going to drown in the anger swamp like you do.

So Scott, although I didn't get the higher education. I work in an industry where all of my co-workers are college graduates with high levels of technical skills and technical training. I have performed well above average competing against other people who are well above average.

So Scott

My accomplishments during my life suggest my intelligence level.

But I haven't become a ultra partisan minded Trump apologist or an ultra partisan opponent of the President. I have used the gift of intelligence to determine that the President is a clear and present danger to the United States. My opposition is based upon his behavior, not on his politics. His choices of new advisers who are either not qualified by experience or education. They are always loyal above and beyond their sworn duties according to the Constitution. I'm not pretending anything, but the man who you supported unequivocally is a pretender who has conned you into making a fool of yourself.

Like I said.

Donald Trump lied to his Republican base and thought they were so stupid they would believe it, according to Jared Kushner.

Mr Kushner, a property developer who is both President Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law, reportedly made the remarks after he was challenged about Mr Trump’s prolonged interrogation over whether Barack Obama was born in the US.

During Mr Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and throughout his presidency, multiple theories emerged falsely claiming he was not a natural-born American US citizen and it was therefore unconstitutional for him to become US President. Mr Trump was among those who pushed the “birther” conspiracy theory and consistently questioned former President Obama’s birthplace of Hawaii.

The former New York Observer editor has now claimed that Mr Kushner, the former publisher of the paper, informed her that Mr Trump did not believe the “birther” lies he was peddling.

“When I was the editor of the New York Observer, Kushner and I were going back and forth about how the paper should cover him,” Elizabeth Spiers wrote in a post on Twitter.

“I told Jared that I was particularly appalled by his father-in-law’s birtherism stance, which I viewed as cynical and racist.

He rolled his eyes and said ‘He doesn’t really believe it, Elizabeth. He just knows Republicans are stupid and they’ll buy it’”.
