Both the former director and assistant director of the FBI...

have been referred to the D.O.J. for possible criminal prosecution

But according to liberals any problems with the credibility of the FBI is all Trump's fault.

"Weaponization" of the IRS, FBI and DOJ is way over the edge, Lerner "targeting" notwithstanding. But they were heavily politicized at the highest levels.

One can draw a lot of parallels between this Trump administration and the Grant administration and it's not that outrageous that if this continues, Trump could eclipse Grant as presiding over the most corrupt. I think that we're a little early to predict it either way yet.

So what are the national security implications if it's official US policy that North Korea has denuclearized, but they're actually holding on to nuclear warheads and missiles capable of delivering them? And retain stockpiles of weapons grade materials?

Trump is already claiming that NK has denuclearized, "and we didn't give anything up!"

OK I'll accept that someone might be able to express himself only as a child would, and yet be capable in other areas. There could be some lingual deficiency, or a psychological block. But even accepting that possibility, when this kind of magical thinking substitutes for concrete objectives, and it has real impact on our national defense, just how far are we willing to let it go?

You might be surprised. Grant, like Trump, was elected with no clear mandate but addressing corruption ("drain the swamp") quickly became thematic. His early administration was marked by chaos, and of course with the indictments the comparison is natural.

Even though Grant ran his cabinet in military style, and Trump seeks a CEO style of management, I find parallels in temperament and style, which are interesting if they lead to the same sorts of issues.

Do you think it might be said that Trump tends to extend his trust to those subordinates whose loyalty he values? Perhaps to an extent that results in his own detriment? Like President Grant ...

And in foreign policy decisions, and even in some domestic matters, Grant had the tendency to go his own way regardless of the advice of his staff ... similar to Trump. Grant had a deep, perhaps overweening, belief that his own intuition was superior to learned or experienced opinion.

Small difference, when if they do what they've "agreed" to it won't be denuclearization. He is inventing his "reality" to suit his ego, and it's beginning to collide with our national security - and you want to quibble with how I phrased it.

wphamilton said...

But keep on pretending that the emperor is resplendently dressed. I'm just wondering how far you're willing to let it go. Evidently, Trump's not knowing or not caring what North Korea is really doing now, or has indicated that they might do, is not too far for you.

My question to you was (still is), WHEN it happens that Trump pretends that North Korea has denuclearized, and when he's made US policy to reflect that pretense, will you still think that's just fine and dandy? He has already implied that he wants to go that way.

Loretta said...

He implied no such thing.

Anyway, you were fine and dandy when Obama aided Iran...AND did absolutely nothing to STOP NK.

You have a lot of nerve.

wphamilton said...

Sure he did! He's claiming that their actions and suggestions are agreeing to denuclearization. When you're already bragging about those proposed steps as "agreeing to denuclearization", you are accepting that fulfilling them are denuclearization.

You can insist that it's just a negotiation tactic if you want, and I won't argue to much, but if so he's doing it backwards. His tactic would be "you promise 'not much' and we'll basically 'give up nothing' and we'll call it denuclearization." Kiss his robes.

Myballs said...

Well agreeing to denuclearization and actually denuclearizing are two different things.

However North Korea has announced a halt to their ICBM test and closure of their nuclear test site.

They have never gone that far with Obama, Bush or any other president.

And we are still in Korea and have not even promise them anything but a talk.

I'd say there's room for cautious optimism.

And if Trump does close a verifiable deal that denuclearized Korea you're not going to see the emperor's clothes through all that egg on your face.

wphamilton said...

I'll actually be happy to see a deal for a denuclearized Korea and I won't complain overmuch if it includes outright bribery. But I'm a realist and when something starts with bullshit, I expect more bullshit.

Commonsense said...

Then again announcing North Korea as agreed to denuclearization puts pressure on Kim to actually denuclearize.

Art of the deal.

Trump now says Kim must dismantle his nuclear arsenal before he sees any economic benefits.

So before they even sit down he has Kim taking apart his weapons.

wphamilton said...

If you want to be realistic about what North Korea HAS said, they have suspended nuclear and ballistics tests in the period of time up to the anticipated summit. He suspended tests before the Olympics also; it's not necessarily a long term proposal. We've seen this before.

And if he's dismantling nuclear sites - other than the one that's unstable and probably unusable after that last test - that's probably being pretty "creative" (Trump style "creative") with what he's calling a nuclear testing site.

wphamilton said...

CS, it's not exactly unprecedented:

1994: North Korea agreed to freeze and dismantle their nuclear reactors, ending their nuclear weapons program.

2005: North Korea agrees to give up their nuclear program. And the weapons that they claimed to have.

2007: NK agrees to close their weapons research reactor and dismantle weapons facilities

2012: North Korea agrees to a moratorium on long range missiles and their main nuclear facility.

Loretta said...

"White House privately skeptical of North Korea’s plans to freeze nuclear testing"

Commonsense said...

Yes, and everytime North Korea had "agreed" it got sanctions lifted and US aid.

Trump's now saying they will have to do more than agree. They will actually have to follow through.

wphamilton said...

"I doubt you're telling the truth this time."

What's wrong with just acknowledging the truth, that I've held this same position for literally decades, always asking when President will stop saying "we will never tolerate a nuclear North Korea" and start actually not tolerating it? EVERY President.

wphamilton said...

To negotiate a true de-nuclearization, Trump is going to have to agree to eliminate nukes and delivery systems from South Korea, and possibly Japan. NK is also going to demand that the USA draw down or withdraw from military bases.

I certainly hope that an enforceable bilateral regime is established before Trump bargains that away.

There are no nuclear weapons in South Korea nor are there any in Japan.

They are however, under the US nuclear umbrella.

That's non-negotiable. So is leaving South Korea.

What North Korea gets is economic aid, sanctions lifted, and participation in the global economy.

That's quite a lot.

We have delivery systems in both places and from time to time nuclear naval forces have docked in Japanese waters. I don't know whether any of our nuclear delivery systems have been locked and loaded in South Korea since 1991, but I suspect yes and I'm certain that this will be one of Kim Yong Un's demands. Because it frequently has been.

Whether or not "that is not an option" with Trump remains to be seen. It all remains to be seen with Trump. He's making noises that economic sanctions have brought North Korea to the bargaining table, but I very much doubt that. Yong Un thinks that he has the superior bargaining position because he believes that the world trembles at his nuclear might.

This is my opinion, obviously. I don't have any special window into his mind. But I am very confident that lifting sanctions and allowing NK to participate in the brotherhood of nations is not even a beginning.

Impact from the Great Recession

According to the U.S National Bureau of Economic Research, the Great Recession started in December 2007 and ended in June 2009. President Barack Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009, so it had already started before he entered office.

The first thing you notice when looking at the federal deficits from fiscal 2007 (the U.S. government fiscal year ends in September) is that it increased by almost $1 trillion from fiscal 2008 (two months before Obama was elected and four months before he was sworn in) to fiscal 2009. It remained over $1 trillion per year for four years and got below Bush’s last years deficit in fiscal 2015. It continued to decrease until Obama’s last year and has increased in Trump’s first year in office.

We can only hope it is so. But Coldheart thinks that American people are hankering to hang McCabe for denying that he was the leak, and that they don't care what he was exposing.

So if he's right, the McCabe probe will not expose anything; it will squash it and future leaks by dealing harshly with him. There won't be a whiff of the DOJ corruption, just exaggerated accusations regarding McCabe and only McCabe. But since he's already been fired, I think they'll just bury it. If he IS charged, it will be mainly because he back-stabbed his boss to further his own personal advancement.
