Drain the swamp...

The reality here folks is simple. Donald Trump was elected in large part because a very significant portion of our citizenship has been fed up with politics as usual. This portion of the citizenship felt that there had become a "deep state swamp" of corruption and self preservation in our Federal Government that needed a total overall. To a large degree, there is an overriding consensus that the main stream media has been (and still is) in cahoots with this deep state swamp.

To the degree that this is the truth, or just a conspiracy theory is obviously a matter of both opinion and something to be determined.

Now whether or not you agree with the basic idea that our federal bureaucracy has become too large, too self serving, and too corrupt is irrelevant. Trump was elected to do whatever he could to throw a wrench into this bureaucracy, put an end to self serving policies, and expose any corruption. What Donald Trump did in calling out the previous intelligence community leadership was nothing more and nothing less than what he was elected to do. It is just one of many steps that Trump has taken and probably will take in the future.

This will not make him popular with anyone who is in favor of "business as usual". This will bring him the wrath of everyone associated with the so called "deep state". This has been, and will continue to perturb many members of the main stream media as well. You will see these forces "circle the wagons" and demand that Trump is running amok in an attempt to destroy democracy.

The irony, of course, is this was what he was elected to do. Isn't that the foundation of democracy? It's not just that the people get to choose their leaders, but a real Democracy demands that these leaders should be willing to and able to follow through with what they promised their voters. Moreover, nobody "elected" James Comey, James Clapper, or John Brennan. They are fundamentally not part of the "democracy".

There already has been multiple investigations, and there will be more investigations into the actions of our so called "deep state" intelligence community. So far, the investigations have uncovered disturbing behavior by people we are supposed to be able to trust to objectively run our intelligence and law enforcement.

There is going to be a sliding tipping point. Those who already believe that there is a corrupt deep state, will not require much evidence to reaffirm their suspicions. Many who are sort of on the fence will need more convincing. Many on the left will probably not be convinced by much of anything that we find out from our Inspector Generals or other future investigations. We even have a criminal referral for the person who was second in charge of the FBI.

But the only way these questions will be answered is by looking into these allegations and getting to the bottom of what is really going on. Not sure why anyone would "not" want to see these allegations checked out? Certainly if we can spend two plus years chasing down some collusion conspiracy, we can spend a little bit of time looking into a longstanding issue with allegations of a "deep state".

After all... the people have spoken!

Like the "impossible" issue over the weekend the left will not accept concrete proof when it goes against them. The supposed speaker, the transcript and yes even the audio all confirmed this was not spoken. Yet a group of reporters all agree it was and a bunch of ideologues falsely repeat the lies. Even "pastors"...

I look forward to more of the deep state and it's corrupt actions coming out. Obama's legacy will be something no president will wish for.

Except he set up the election of Trump, so that would be the silver lining.

But hey, if you believe that it's akin to destroying democracy because Inspector Generals are being allowed to do the job they are hired to do (which is investigate potential malfeasance).

Then I think you are the person who should "get help".

Would you rather we just fire all the Inspector Generals and allow the FBI, CIA, and other intelligence communities to run without any oversight at all? Is that "your" idea of democracy?

Reading comprehension isn't one of Roger's skills.

According to Roger, apparently people like Brennan, Clapper, and Comey represent the true will of Democracy. Therefor it's akin to destroying it, if you actually allow the Inspector Generals to do their job and investigate anyone within their organizations.

According to Roger, a President who is legally elected and decides to actually follow through with his campaign pledges is simply more "destruction of democracy".

Go figure.

Perhaps old Rog should do a little more "thinking" before he writes. So used to "cutting and pasting" that he apparently forgot how to put together an actual argument.

The next fake trump crisis .....yeah, our liar in chief making up more shit the weak and gullible here will embrace.....Just like first years shouldn't make the finals.....sad very sad....

President Donald Trump dubiously suggested investigators from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe “will be meddling” in the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that “13 Angry Democrats” assigned to the investigation plan to attempt to interfere with the elections, most of which will be held on Nov. 6. As usual, he failed to mention that Mueller himself is a lifelong Republican.

Although Trump has refused to firmly accept that Russia attempted to swing the 2016 presidential election in his favor ― as confirmed by the U.S. intelligence community in January 2017 ― he tweeted with certainty that Mueller’s investigators would tamper with the midterms.

There is zero evidence to suggest Trump’s statement is credible. However, in February, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Russia was already attempting to meddle in the midterms. He warned that the U.S. is no more prepared now than it was before the 2016 election to prevent Russian interference

Still wondering WTF 13 angry democrats are....I doubt if trump could name them since he is full of it again......

Just so we are clear here.

If the Inspector General Report shows malfeasance on the part of the Intelligence community...

It's your opinion that the only people who feel that actions should be taken is FOX News and Breitbart?

Here is a hint, Rog...

When you debate a subject. Stick to a subject. The only thing you accomplish by bringing up the President's opinion, FOX News or Breitbart is to prove that "you" cannot view the subject of conversation objectively. You prove that "you" see everything from a matter of partisanship, rather as objective fact.

The reality is that the Inspector General is not a Republican. He is not a Trump nominee. He is not a member of FOX News. He does not write for Breitbart.

If his report shows wrongdoing, it will be because there was factual evidence of wrong doing. It will not be his opinion. It will not be based on claims by the President or FOX News.

The fact that you have already preemptively discarded the report as a matter of declaring it something determined by the President... is proof that you cannot be objective in this.

President Trump slammed Democrats on Tuesday for sharing photos of children in enclosed cages near the U.S.-Mexico border and blaming the administration’s immigration policy when the photos were taken before Mr. Trump took office.

“Democrats mistakenly tweet 2014 pictures from Obama’s term showing children from the Border in steel cages. They thought it was recent pictures in order to make us look bad, but backfires. Dems must agree to Wall and new Border Protection for good of country…Bipartisan Bill!” Mr. Trumptweeted.

The photos appeared in the Arizona Republic in 2014 during former President Barack Obama’s second term to illustrate the over 1,000 children detained by authorities trying to cross the border. Mr. Obama’s former speech writer Jon Favreau also tweeted out the pictures saying this is “happening right now” and the government needs to be forced to put families back together. He has since deleted the tweet.

The descent of the Democrats into extremism allowed Republicans to achieve a nearly unprecedented electoral dominance. As the Democrats tightened their grip on urban minority blocs and suburban bedroom communities, the South and the Midwest slipped through their fingers. But instead of moderating their tone, they consolidated control over the media and unelected officials.

The eavesdropping on Trump officials and the resulting Mueller investigation are the result.

If the Democrats succeed in reversing the results of the 2016 election by engineering a coup through the DOJ and the media, elections will cease to matter. And that will eliminate any final check on the left’s political extremism. That is what the investigations tearing apart America are really about.

The social consensus is gone. Instead the left manufactured its own social consensus on values and used the entertainment industry and the educational system to indoctrinate each generation anew. The political consensus was swept out on a tide of cash. And the electrical consensus is under siege by a movement that is trying to make elections in America as irrelevant as they already are in California.

And the Democrats are going as crazy nationally, as they did in California.

A MUST READ NEW BOOK

Tailspin: The People and Forces Behind America’s Fifty-Year Fall–and Those Fighting to Reverse It
by Steven Brill.

Editorial Reviews

"Steven Brill's Tailspin does precisely what the daily torrent of news does not: make sense. The book is nothing less than a unified (and persuasive) theory of everything—including politics, business, culture—and it even includes several glimmers of hope amid the pervasive darkness." —Jeffrey Toobin, author of American Heiress

“A penetrating and personal examination of why the United States is in the midst of a nervous breakdown. But with his fantastically reported story, Brill also shows how—and who—might restore some common sense and equilibrium.” —Bob Woodward

“A dysfunctional system serving an unaccountable ruling class is wrecking America, according to this searing sociopolitical jeremiad. . . . [Brill] brings both detailed reporting and wide-ranging perspective to this insightful account of how America reached its current state.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Penetrating . . . in large part because of Brill’s skill in presenting abstruse legal and financial developments in an accessible manner. . . . [A] clarifying and invaluable overview.” —Booklist (starred review)

“Steven Brill is a remarkable journalist who has always ventured away from the herd. In Tailspin, he has identified and analyzed brilliantly the surprising pressure points where our democracy has fractured and failed over the past half-century, leading to today’s overwhelming dysfunction and cultural polarization. In uncovering what happened, Brill shows us that there may be a way back from America’s dire predicament.” —Carl Bernstein

“[Brill] offers ample evidence that American democracy is in peril. . . . Hard-hitting.” —Kirkus

“Steve Brill has written a book that every American should read. It faces the problems of our immediate past unflinchingly. At the same time it sees the seedlings of hope all across America. Ultimately, it reminds us that America is in the choices we make as citizens. The future is up to us.” —Bill Bradley, former U.S. senator

“Tailspin is a must read for all citizens troubled by the inequities, malfunctions and bizarre shape of our public and private sectors.” —Tom Brokaw

.James said...

“Complaining about American politics has become a national pastime. But in his expertly researched new book, Steven Brill does far more than identify what’s wrong: he explains why American democracy isn’t working. And he gives us the powerful stories and surprising personalities who are FEEDING—and FIGHTING—our democratic dysfunction.” —Jacob S. Hacker, Stanley B. Resor Professor of Political Science at Yale, and Co-Author, American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America Prosper

“Brill's perceptive analysis about how the cult of meritocracy has tragically created an entrenched elite who are determined to defend their moats—and MAKE THEMSELVES, RATHER THAN AMERICA, "GREAT"—should challenge us all. The analysis is meticulously detailed and sourced, building on Brill's long career in investigative journalism. However, Brill shows how groups in America are trying to fight back, in all manner of grassroots ways, making the book also a manifesto for practical change and a rallying cry for everyone who wants to REBUILD AMERICA.” —Gillian Tett, author of Fool’s Gold and U.S. Managing Editor of The Financial Times

“Steve Brill has built on years of investigative journalism to produce a brilliant and powerful book on the most critical issue of our time: How did America’s core values get HIJACKED BY A PRIVILEGED CLASS? During the past fifty years, we have undermined our basic national creed that we are a level playing field where any kid has the opportunity to build a better life. This book is not a political or ideological screed. Instead, it’s a model of deep reporting and fact-driven analysis. Everyone, left and right and center, should read it. It will open your eyes and challenge your assumptions.” —Walter Isaacson, author of Leonardo da Vinci

“A compelling, surprising narrative about the unlikely people and forces responsible for the dashing of the American dream—and an uplifting look at those working to restore it.” —Jill Abramson, former executive editor, The New York Times

About the Author
STEVEN BRILL has written for The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, New York, and Fortune. He founded and ran Court TV, The American Lawyer magazine, ten regional legal newspapers, and Brill's Content magazine. Brill was the author of Time's March 4, 2013, special report "Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us," for which he won the 2014 National Magazine Award for Public Service, and of the 2015 bestseller America's Bitter Pill. He has regularly appeared as an expert analyst on NBC, CBS, and CNN. AND HERE'S HOW STOPPING THE TAILSPIN CAN BE CONEa

Democrats Are Running a Smart, Populist Campaign

David Leonhardt: “Stacey Abrams and Conor Lamb are supposed to represent opposite poles of the Trump-era Democratic Party. She is the new progressive heroine — the first black woman to win a major-party nomination for governor, who will need a surge of liberal turnout to win Georgia. He is the new centrist hero — the white former Marine who flipped a Western Pennsylvania congressional district with support from gun-loving, abortion-opposing Trump voters.

“But when you spend a little time listening to both Abrams and Lamb, you notice something that doesn’t fit the storyline: They sound a lot alike.”
“They emphasize the same issues, and talk about them in similar ways. They don’t come across as avatars of some Bernie-vs.-Hillary battle for the party’s soul. They come across as ideological soul mates, both upbeat populists who focus on health care, education, upward mobility and the dignity of work.”

You believe that any wrongdoing on policy and procedures were politically motivated.

So I am not understanding your point?

Are you saying that wrongdoing is okay regarding not following Intelligence community rules and regulations... that's okay to break rules to the point where a criminal referral is recommended.

as long as it's not politically motivated?

McCabe authorized a leak of protected information to the press, for his own benefit, and then liked to investigators regarding his actions. He was fired and recommended for possible criminal referral.

I don't know that any of that was "politically motivated". What I do know is that constituted serious malfeasance, and the fact that he was fired over his actions... was completely justified.

I think the only people who saw political motivation here was those who thought that McCabe should not be fired, and was only fired for political reasons.

Same with Comey. It was clear (and still is clear) that he did not like his new boss, wasn't happy to be working for his new boss, and took actions that seemed aimed at his new boss that seemed highly unusual for an FBI director.

Perhaps it was "personal" rather than political. I don't know his motivation. What I know is that he was fired for good reason.

And the only "political motivation" arguments come from your side... who claim that Comey was fired because of political reasons.

So I think Roger.. you have it backwards and are simply projecting. I am not the one that believes everything is politically motivated here. You are. I believe that there are people within the federal government who are used to doing certain things in a certain way, and would rather not answer to Donald Trump, and certainly do not welcome any new scrutiny applied to their positions.

I don't believe it would have mattered to them if a President who wanted to drain the swamp, encouraged internal FBI investigations, and was otherwise critical of the leadership of those communities... was Republican or Democrat. I don't believe it has anything to do with partisanship. It has everything to do with self preservation and power. They see the President as a threat to them.

Trump's Plan For Political Survival:
BLAME OBAMAS FOR EVERYTHING

The last two presidents haven’t spoken since inauguration as the attacks from 45 on 44 move from the vicious to the absurd.

President Donald Trump spent his long Memorial Day weekend sequestered mostly in the White House. But instead of holiday tweeting about the “haters and losers”—of which, he once said, “sadly, there are many”—he opted to lob innuendo and unfounded accusations at the man who occupied the office before him.

Barack Obama, Trump declared over the course of several days, “did NOTHING” on trade, let the sanctioned Chinese phone company ZTE “flourish with no security checks,” employed various lawyers on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, ignored Russian election meddling, and, above all, authorized “spying” on the Trump 2016 campaign.

Broadsides against his predecessor are nothing new for Trump. Nor are the false and misleading suggestions that President Obama snooped on him during his campaign. In early 2017, Trump very publicly, and erroneously, accused Obama of wiretapping him in 2016.

What stood out about the weekend’s salvo was the vitriol, perhaps panic, behind it and the frostiness it underscored about the relationship between the two most recent Oval Office occupants.

According to two White House officials, Trump has been privately wondering whether Obama is actively working behind the scenes to undermine or undercut his presidency. And he’s done so without bothering to pick up the phone to ask or confront his predecessor.

Obama and Trump have not spoken since the inauguration. There was an attempt. Following Trump’s inauguration, the new president tried to call Obama. But according to The Wall Street Journal, the two never connected. Matters weren’t helped when, in early 2017, Obama became furious about Trump’s groundless allegation that the former had wiretapped the latter in 2016.
There has been no communication since. When asked if Jan. 20, 2017, was the last time the two spoke, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told The Daily Beast, “as far as I know.”

The cold front has extended beyond the presidential level. According to one former senior Obama administration official, no one in the Trump White House has contacted top members of Obama’s national-security team to either inquire about or discuss the spying accusations.
“To my knowledge,” the senior official said, “none of those people are in contact with each other at a substantive level.”

.James said...

Several of those members, including former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan, have been blistering in their criticism of Trump and, as a result, the routine subject of Team Trump’s missives. The result has been a vicious and petty war of words that would have been utterly discordant for any presidency prior.

“I think they are all at the point where they are offended by the attacks on the rule of law,” the senior official said of Clapper, Brennan, and the like. “Roger Stone told John Brennan he should take a cyanide pill. Once you get to that point it is hard to be offended. But they are deeply worried about the harm it is doing to our democracy.”

The most senior members of successive administrations usually adopt a muted approach to one another out of a sense of professional courtesy. That is particularly true at the presidential level, where there is a particular interest in demonstrating a continuity to the office. Obama has largely done his part, weighing in sporadically on the Trump presidency and almost exclusively during those occasions when his major policy achievements are being rolled back or unraveled.

Trump has declined to abide by such norms. In private conversation, he has repeatedly brought up Obama’s supposed “spying” right before his shock election victory, with one close confidant characterizing it as more often “musing than definitive” statement or a firm conviction that he’s uncovered the crime of the century. And yet, those musings often spill over into public, with the current president often comparing the last one to Richard Nixon based on conspiracy theories or right-wing memes.

On May 17, Trump posted online that, “word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI ‘SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN EMBEDDED INFORMANT.’” On May 20, Trump demanded, via Twitter, “that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!” The following day, he quoted The Wall Street Journal, in asking, “‘WHERE IN THE WORLD WAS BARACK OBAMA?’”

For former Obama aides, it’s been a shock to the system—at times confusing in its complete removal from reality and, simultaneously, terrifying for the larger implications.
“To hear president of the United States even surmise that a previous administration was spying against him for political purposes, it suggests to me he doesn't appreciate those stringent controls that are in place,” said Ned Price, President Obama’s national-security spokesman. “This is either all pure show and theater and he knows as much or there is an idea in his head that this is possible and could have happened. What is really scary is that if he thinks it is possible that this happened, is he giving similar orders to his people?”

Loretta Russo said...

"Mr. Obama’s former speech writer Jon Favreau also tweeted out the pictures saying this is “happening right now” and the government needs to be forced to put families back together. He has since deleted the tweet."

CNN Really Soiled Their Sheets This Weekend – The Daily Daily Caller Podcast

"It was not a good weekend for CNN. Not ratings-wise, they don’t make good ratings ever, but from a journalistic standpoint.

On Sunday, James “the clap” Clapper was on State of the Union with host Dana Bash and she asked the former Director of National Intelligence a basic question – if the intelligence community was so concerned that Russians were attempting to infiltrate the Trump campaign, why didn’t you warn them? Clapper was completely unprepared for this basic question because he’d been living in a world where even mildly challenging questions are not asked of him.

Clapper’s answer was pathetic, and basically boiled down to “We had to send in spies in order to find out if we needed to send in spies.” This “logic” means any American can be spied on to find out if there’s a reason to spy on them, which is incredibly dangerous.

Clapper also claimed he wasn’t told of the spying, saying he shouldn’t have been told in order to “protect the source.” Apparently Clapper doesn’t think he should be trusted with the identity of spies because why? Does he just become a fountain of information to anyone within earshot after a couple of glasses of chardonnay?

“Roseanne apologized fervently,” Cain told Trish Regan during a FOX Business interview on Tuesday. “They canceled her anyway.”

The swamp is getting deeper.

The tireless mendacity of President Trump has roared back into the top of the news. “How to know when Trump is lying,” notes the headline on a CNN piece. Slate: “Trump’s Saturday of Lies: President Says Official Who Briefed Reporters ‘Doesn’t Exist.’ ” The New York Times has an article on how Trump’s repeated allegations about an FBI informant who cultivated sources on his 2016 presidential campaign squares with his history: “With ‘Spygate,’ Trump Shows How He Uses Conspiracy Theories to Erode Trust.”

Bring up Trump’s frequent lies, and White House officials will seek to change the topic. They’ll talk about the robust economy; they’ll talk about the move of the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; they’ll talk about the withdrawal from the Paris climate accord; they’ll talk about the blameworthiness of Trump’s Democratic critics. All of the programs of the Trump administration, however, are built to some degree of deception; lying, after all, was the central plank of Trump’s presidential election campaign.

In their look at Trump’s hyping of “Spygate,” Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Maggie Haberman of the New York Times summed up the latest in presidential misinformation:

Last week, President Trump promoted new, unconfirmed accusations to suit his political narrative: that a “criminal deep state” element within Mr. Obama’s government planted a spy deep inside his presidential campaign to help his rival, Hillary Clinton, win — a scheme he branded “Spygate.” It was the latest indication that a president who has for decades trafficked in conspiracy theories has brought them from the fringes of public discourse to the Oval Office.

Citing two former Trump officials, the New York Times reports that Trump resisted deploying the term “deep state” in his rhetoric, “partly because he believed it made him look too much like a crank.” So the guy who gripes incessantly and with no evidence about the “fake news” media is worried about appearing like a crank.

President Trump's 'Spygate' is a dishonest and effective branding exercise, says columnist Eugene Robinson. He and opinion writers Molly Roberts, David Ignatius and Christine Emba discuss Trump's latest attack on the Justice Department during the weekly roundtable "It's Only Thursday." (The Washington Post)

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Notes the New York Times: “Students of Mr. Trump’s life and communication style argue that the idea of conspiracies is a vital part of his strategy to avoid accountability and punch back at detractors, real or perceived, including the news media.”

True, no doubt. Yet the most clarifying point on this matter comes from Billy Bush, who is, if nothing else, a student of Mr. Trump’s life and communication style. Bush was the fellow chatting with Trump on the infamous 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape in which the mogul bragged about grabbing women by their genitals. Bush was fired from the “Today” show over the incident. It just so happened, however, that Bush had spent a lot of time with Trump back in his years as an entertainment correspondent, and he discussed his experiences on an episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher” in March. Maher noted that Trump had exaggerated the ratings of his program “The Apprentice,” prompting Bush:

Well, he’s been saying No. 1 forever, right. Finally I’d had enough. I said, “Wait, Donald. Hold it. Wait a minute. You haven’t been No. 1 for five years, four years — whatever it is. Not in any category, not in any demo.” He goes, “Well, did you see last Thursday? Last Thursday, 18-49 … last five minutes.” I said, “No. I don’t know that stat.” So he was like, “I told you.” And then later, when the cameras were off … he says, “Billy, look, look, you just tell them and they believe it. That’s it, you just tell them and they believe it. They just do.” And I said, “Ah, okay.”

That’s called telling the truth about lies.

Being a blabbermouth, Trump apparently cannot stop himself from confiding about his malicious tactics — to media types, of all people. Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes” recently revealed that Trump had told her about the thinking behind his media-bashing ways. “You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe it,” Trump told Stahl shortly after his election, as she recalls it.

On Tuesday morning, Trump tweeted:

News outlets scrambled to characterize the allegation. CNN: “Trump says, without proof, that Mueller team will meddle in midterm elections.” Associated Press via New York Times: “Trump: Mueller’s Team Is ‘Meddling’ in Midterm Elections.” Politico: “Trump says Mueller probe will meddle in midterms.”

“Without proof,” huh? CNN cannot call this particular tweet a lie because it doesn’t know 100 percent for certain that Mueller won’t meddle; and it doesn’t know 100 percent for certain that Trump doesn’t believe this allegation. Which is to say, the media has standards in covering a president who doesn’t. It has been a mismatch from Day 1.

The truth is that this President is nuts. Or at least incapable of telling the truth. But that does not bother any one of you.

As a candidate, Donald J. Trump claimed that the United States government had known in advance about the Sept. 11 attacks.

As a candidate, Donald J. Trump claimed that thousands of Muslims celebrated the 9/11 attacks in New Jersey the day of the attack.

After he was elected.

President Donald J. Trump hinted that Antonin Scalia, a Supreme Court justice who died in his sleep two years ago, had been murdered.

And for years, as a candidate, who got his start inside the Republican party, by touting that President Barack Obama had been born in Kenya rather than Honolulu, making him ineligible for the presidency.

This isn't fake news, thee are facts. Yet not one of you are disturbed in any fashion about this President.

Trump Asked Sessions to Retain Control of Russia Inquiry After His Recusal.

Obstruction of justice?

Sessions flew to Florida to discuss the travel ban on Muslims.

--

By the time Attorney General Jeff Sessions arrived at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort for dinner one Saturday evening in March 2017, he had been receiving the presidential silent treatment for two days. Mr. Sessions had flown to Florida because Mr. Trump was refusing to take his calls about a pressing decision on his travel ban.

When they met, Mr. Trump was ready to talk — but not about the travel ban. His grievance was with Mr. Sessions: The president objected to his decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Mr. Trump, who had told aides that he needed a loyalist overseeing the inquiry, berated Mr. Sessions and told him he should reverse his decision, an unusual and potentially inappropriate request.

Mr. Sessions refused.

The confrontation, which has not been previously reported, is being investigated by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as are the president’s public and private attacks on Mr. Sessions and efforts to get him to resign. Mr. Trump dwelled on the recusal for months, according to confidants and current and former administration officials who described his behavior toward the attorney general.

Investigators have pressed current and former White House officials about Mr. Trump’s treatment of Mr. Sessions and whether they believe the president was trying to impede the Russia investigation by pressuring him. The attorney general was also interviewed at length by Mr. Mueller’s investigators in January. And of the four dozen or so questions Mr. Mueller wants to ask Mr. Trump, eight relate to Mr. Sessions. Among them: What efforts did you make to try to get him to reverse his recusal?

The president’s lead lawyer in the case, Rudolph W. Giuliani, said that if Mr. Trump agreed to answer the special counsel’s questions — an interview is the subject of continuing negotiations — he should not be forced to discuss his private deliberations with senior administration officials. Talking about the attorney general, Mr. Giuliani argued, would set a bad precedent for future presidents.

The Republicans in the senate have told the President that they would not confirm a replacement if Trump fires Sessions.

He will never turn on the President. But the Muller investigation is going to be all over it.

The liar in chief

During the rally, Mr. Trump also reiterated many claims that The Times and others have previously debunked: that Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, supported MS-13 (she never said this), that illegal border crossings had declined 40 percent (they recently increased), and that tax cuts he signed into law last year were the largest in history (they rank 12th). He also incorrectly described other countries as not “sending their best” through the diversity visa program (applicants enter of their own volition), claimed construction had begun on his border wall (it hasn’t), and said that the suspect in the Manhattan truck attack in October had sponsored two dozen family members through “chain migration” (this is implausible).
