Judge Sullivan manages to make Flynn into even more of a martyr

So just when you believe that General Flynn could not possibly garner any more sympathy from the conservative circles... you get a high profile district Judge who apparently wasn't paying close enough attention (or was suckered by some nefarious newspaper headlines) and ended up attacking the three star General over something that... well... wasn't actually true.
"Arguably, that undermines everything that this flag over here stands for," Sullivan said, gesturing toward the American flag in the courtroom, according to reporters who were present. "Arguably, you sold your country out."
Judge Sullivan goes on to suggest that General Flynn (a decorated soldier) may have committed an act of "treason" for being an unregistered "foreign agent" while simultaneously being the President's National Security Advisor.

The Judge even asked the Prosecution if they had considered filing such charges.

All in a hearing that was specifically supposed to be about an entirely different matter.

The problem with this entire line of attack was that it was actually untrue. Sullivan is arguably correct as to whether or not Flynn may have been (at one time) an unregistered foreign agent, but there is no truth to the allegation that Flynn was working for anyone other than the United States when he was the incoming National Security Advisor.

Moreover, the concept of the criminal nature of an unregistered foreign agent seems to be a bit of a "made up crime" that has come into vogue with the Special Counsel, who seems to have come up empty with Russia, and are shooting blanks as it pertains to collusion. While the term "unregistered foreign agent" seems a bit dramatic, it actually means little more than an American business person (generally a lobbyist) who is working on behalf of some foreign interest. Flynn's interest was with Turkey. His business as an intelligence consultant was entire legal, ethical, and has never been questioned.

The reality is almost nobody "registers" as a foreign agent when they do lobbying work. Prior to Paul Manafort and his minions, there had been only a couple of examples of this crime being prosecuted and nobody has ever been put in jail for any extended time (I believe six months was the only prison sentence associated with this). Other groups (such as the Podesta group) were allowed to register after the fact, when it became evident that they hadn't done so when they were supposed to.

So the concept that being an "unregistered foreign agent" is some act of treason seems more than mildly "over the top". The fact that this Judge used this excuse during this particular hearing (which was supposed to be a simple sentencing hearing where both sides were asking for no jail time) to attack the General, call out his patriotism, and demand that he could be charged with "treason" is more than enough reason for Flynn backers to become even more boisterous in his defense.

Sullivan eventually apologized and admitted that he was wrong. But by that point, the damage has been done. Flynn is officially a bigger martyr than ever.

Was Sullivan being "honest" when he apologized for his outburst and admitted that he was wrong about what he said to Flynn? Was he being "honest" when he said he "felt terrible" about it?

Perhaps he did... or perhaps he didn't.

If he was lying and really didn't give a shit, then he is most definitely a dishonest judge who should be disbarred.

if he was telling the truth, then you are the one who is (once again) full of shit.

So who is the General Flynn that the liberal posters are so freely disparaging?

While stationed in Grenada as an intelligence officer, General Flynn dove off a 40 foot cliff and saved two U.S. servicemen who’s raft was being swept out to sea. It wasn’t his first rescue. He was acknowledged for saving two children from a run away car when he was a teenager.

but I'm sure the posters here have an uncle or neighbor or someone in the military they proudly roll out at times such as Memorial Day to serve their self-righteousness.

Then back to shaming someone who the FBI themselves did not think was lying until after Mueller, who has proved his partisanship.

We shall see what the judge is up to but this delay could mean many different and opposite things.

And if Flynn lied, as he is agreeing to plead to, it a wasn't enough for the FBI to highlight in the initial 302. Sure would be nice to have those agents notes or a recording of the interview... I take it a recording wasn't made and am guessing Mueller must have destroyed the notes, as he and his buddy Comey has done with everything Hillary. Or given immunity or failed to prosecute.

When Robert Swan Mueller III deployed to Vietnam as a Marine infantry platoon commander in 1968, he surely knew it would be difficult. Mueller’s regiment, the 4th Marines, had faced bloody jungle warfare for months, and Mueller joined in them in a hellscape at the tail end of what military historians say was the service’s defining year in the war due to the size and scope of their operations.

Mueller ultimately earned two awards for valor, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg while responding to the ambush of fellow Marines and was reassigned after his injuries to serve as an aide-de-camp to the commander of the 3rd Marine Division, then-Maj. Gen. William K. Jones. In that role, Mueller excelled using a “diplomatic and congenial manner” that “significantly contributed to the rapport” Jones had with local Vietnamese officials and military officers, according to one account of Mueller’s actions.

The threat of a partial government shutdown this weekend may be diminishing. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Wednesday morning announced he will introduce what a temporary funding bill that will keep the federal government open into 2019. Funding currently expires at midnight on Friday.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said Democrats would support McConnell's bill. It's unclear if President Trump will sign the bill.

If it becomes law, the spending measure will postpone the day of reckoning over the final bits of the federal budget until the new Congress is sworn in and Democrats take control the House.

In a tweet, McConnell said the funding measure, known as a continuing resolution, would last through February 8th, 2019.

Last week, Trump said he would "proudly" shut down the government unless he got an additional $5 billion for a border wall. But Democrats in the House and Senate balked at that, and with Democrats taking the House majority as of January, it appears Trump's plans for a wall are all but dead.

'Obama-like mistake':
Republicans slam Trump over plan to withdraw troops from Syria
NBC News

Dec 19th 2018 1:43PM

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is facing harsh criticism from fellow Republicans over his decision to declare victory over the Islamic State and withdraw U.S. forces from Syria.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a close Trump ally, said it would be an "Obama-like mistake" to remove American troops. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., called it a "grave error" and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said Trump's declaration that ISIS has been defeated is "simply not true."

"An American withdrawal at this time would be a big win for ISIS, Iran, Bashar al Assad of Syria, and Russia," Graham said in a statement. "I fear it will lead to devastating consequences for our nation, the region, and throughout the world."

Today Trump tweeted news of the withdrawal decision: "We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."

Trump allies have long believed that the defeat of ISIS makes for a compelling campaign narrative for a president who promised to reduce American interventionism as he seeks re-election in 2020. Before last month's midterms, there was a more immediate risk that a withdrawal followed by a flare-up in violence in the region could have negative political consequences for Republican candidates.

Still, several GOP lawmakers issued blistering rebukes of Trump's decision on the policy merits Wednesday. The basic argument is that the removal of U.S. forces will create a power vacuum that could empower Iran, Syria, Russia, terrorist groups or some combination thereof.

Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who is up for re-election in 2020 in a state that has been trending toward Democrats, pressed Trump to reconsider.

Cory Gardner

@SenCoryGardner
The US is the only global power able to stop Russia, Iran, & their terrorist proxies in Syria from total control of a region vital to national security. We've made significant progress in our fight against ISIS but the fight isn't over, & a US withdrawal will embolden bad actors.

Rubio said there are three reasons why it's a "colossal mistake" to withdraw from Syria: ISIS has been converted into an insurgency and will be a more powerful one without the U.S. presence, Syria will fall more under the control of Russia and Iran without U.S. forces and the U.S. will be more readily seen as an "unreliable ally" by the rest of the world.

"I just think it's a bad decision that eventually will lead to greater risk for the United States," Rubio said. "I'm all for peace. I would love to live in a world in which U.S. deployment of service men and women abroad were not necessary. That's not the world we live in."

So I'll post this take from a more thoughtful liberal.

@DamonLinker

Rule #1 of neoconservative foreign policy: Never, ever withdraw American troops.

Rule #2 of neoconservative foreign policy: See Rule #1.

I'm beginning to be quite skeptical of never-end commitments of American troops. I'm leaning toward the British way, either total adminstrative control with both regime and cultural change (ie bring them kicking and screaming into the 21st century) or totally get out altogether.

And given that resisters always outlast invaders getting out is the better option. If Putin did indeed indeed win, he's welcome to his "prize".

BERLIN — German weekly Der Spiegel says one of its star reporters has left the publication after committing journalistic fraud “on a grand scale” over a number of years.

The magazine published a lengthy report Wednesday following an internal investigation into the work of Claas Relotius, a 33-year-old staff writer known for his vivid investigative stories.

Spiegel reported that Relotius, who previously worked for other publications and won a CNN Journalist of the Year award in 2014, has resigned after admitting to inventing interviews.

Several of Relotius’ articles were about the United States, including alleged abuse in a Florida reform school, an execution in Texas, a border militia in Arizona and a small town in Minnesota.

The magazine said the incident marks “a low point in the 70-year history of Der Spiegel.”

WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's lawyer on Wednesday said Trump had signed an October 2015 letter of intent to develop a real estate project in Russia during his presidential campaign, after earlier denying it in a weekend television interview.

Rudy Giuliani had told CNN on Sunday that "no one signed" the letter of intent to go forward with the Moscow project, although he acknowledged talks about the development had extended through November 2016 when Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

Giuliani reversed course in comments to Reuters on Wednesday, however, after CNN reported late on Tuesday that it had obtained a copy of the Oct. 28, 2015 letter signed by Trump, who had announced his White House bid in June that year.

"If I said it, I made a mistake," Giuliani said of his previous denial about Trump having signed the letter.

Stone is next.

Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III asked the House Intelligence Committee on Friday for an official transcript of Trump adviser Roger Stone’s testimony, according to people familiar with the request, a sign that prosecutors could be moving to charge him with a crime.

It is the first time Mueller has formally asked the committee to turn over material the panel has gathered in its investigation of Russian interference of the 2016 campaign, according to the people.

The move suggests that the special counsel is moving to finalize his months-long investigation of Stone — a key part of Mueller’s inquiry into whether anyone in President Trump’s orbit coordinated with the Russians.

Stone, who has advised Trump on and off for decades and was in contact with the candidate during the 2016 campaign, has been a focus of the special counsel as Mueller probes whether the Trump campaign had advance knowledge of WikiLeaks’s release of Democratic emails allegedly hacked by Russian operatives.

Securing an official transcript from the committee would be a necessary step before pursuing an indictment that Stone allegedly lied to lawmakers, legal experts said.

The special counsel could use the threat of a false-statement charge to seek cooperation from Stone, as Mueller has done with other Trump advisers, such as former national security adviser Michael Flynn and longtime Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

It is unclear what aspect of Stone’s testimony Mueller is scrutinizing. But Stone has given conflicting accounts about what prompted him to accurately predict during the 2016 race that WikiLeaks was going to unleash material that would hurt Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

In an interview Wednesday, Stone said he had not been notified of Mueller’s request. But he said he is confident that the transcript of his testimony will not provide the special counsel with grounds to charge him.

“I don’t think any reasonable attorney who looks at it would conclude that I committed perjury, which requires intent and materiality,” Stone said.

For weeks, the special counsel’s office has had access to an unofficial copy of Stone’s closed-door September 2017 interview, according to people with knowledge of the process. Mueller’s request of the official copy signals the special counsel could now be pursuing an indictment, several legal experts said.

“That suggests prosecutors are getting ready to bring a charge,” said former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner. “Prosecutors can’t bring a charge without an original certified copy of the transcript that shows the witness lied.”

Trump says Mexico is to 'indirectly' pay for border wall that US military will build

President Trump on Wednesday continued to push for the border wall.

“Mexico is paying (indirectly) for the Wall through the new USMCA, the replacement for NAFTA! Far more money coming to the U.S. Because of the tremendous dangers at the Border, including large scale criminal and drug inflow, the United States Military will build the Wall!” Trump tweeted.

The tweet came shortly after the Washington Post reported that Trump on Tuesday “abandoned months of strident demands for Congress to give him $5 billion for his border wall, bowing to political reality as Republicans scrambled to avoid shutting down large portions of the government this weekend.”

In another wall-related tweet on Wednesday, Trump wrote: “In our Country, so much money has been poured down the drain, for so many years, but when it comes to Border Security and the Military, the Democrats fight to the death. We won on the Military, which is being completely rebuilt. One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!”

Mueller Seeks Roger Stone’s Testimony

Special counsel Robert Mueller “asked the House Intelligence Committee on Friday for an official transcript of Trump adviser Roger Stone’s testimony… a sign that prosecutors could be moving to charge him with a crime,” the Washington Post reports.

“It is the first time Mueller has formally asked the committee to turn over material the panel has gathered in its investigation of Russian interference of the 2016 campaign.”

“The move suggests that the special counsel is moving to finalize his months-long investigation of Stone — a key part of Mueller’s inquiry into whether anyone in President Trump’s orbit coordinated with the Russians.”

Trump Testimony Showed Knowledge of Campaign Law

“Sworn statements by President Trump dating back several decades indicate he has a deep understanding of campaign-finance laws, legal experts say, which could be critical if investigators ever pursue a case against him over his alleged direction of hush-money payments in the 2016 campaign,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Trump Snubs Corker By Canceling Meeting

President Trump “delivered a parting snub to one of his biggest congressional critics, as even his Republican allies laid into administration officials for the White House’s surprise announcement that U.S. troops would be withdrawing from Syria because, as the president put it on Twitter, Islamic State forces there had been defeated,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker (R-TN) went “to the White House for a previously scheduled meeting with Trump where he planned to ask him about the Syria decision. Instead, while he was waiting, Trump canceled on him without explanation.”

Said Corker: “It’s obviously a political decision.”

Just over a week after President Trump forcefully suggested he'd risk a government shutdown to secure border wall funding, the White House is now signaling a retreat -- and top conservative commentators and politicians are declaring that the president's "gutless" move has not only broken a campaign promise, but also undermined his credibility as a dealmaker.

"Trump will just have been a joke presidency who scammed the American people, amused the populists for a while, but he’ll have no legacy whatsoever" if he yields on the issue, columnist Ann Coulter told The Daily Caller in a podcast. (Within hours of those critical comments, Trump's official Twitter account stopped following Coulter's.)

And House Freedom Caucus Chair Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told Fox News late Wednesday that "the political fallout will start" soon and that Trump risks doing “major damage” to his re-election effort in 2020.

OPINION: TRUMP’S GREAT WALL BECOMES TRUMP’S GREAT STALL
10:59 AM 11/29/2018 | ANN COULTER
Ann Coulter | Political Commentator
20

For those of us who were ecstatic the night Donald Trump was elected president, who watch election night videos over and over again, it used to be easy to defend him against the charge that he is just a BS-ing con man who would say anything to get elected.

It’s getting harder.

Trump was our last chance. But he’s spent two years not building the wall, not deporting illegals —”Incredible kids!” — and not ending the anchor baby scam.

Within 10 seconds of Trump’s leaving office, there will be no evidence that he was ever president. Laws will be changed, executive orders rescinded, treaties re-written and courts packed.

Trump will leave no legacy at all. Only a wall is forever.

We had no choice. No one else was promising to save America.

As then-presidential candidate Donald Trump said:

On day one, we will begin working on an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful southern border wall. We will use the best technology, including above- and below-ground sensors, that’s the tunnels. Remember that: above and below. Towers, aerial surveillance and manpower to supplement the wall, find and dislocate tunnels and keep out criminal cartels …

But then he signed a spending bill expressly prohibiting him from building any part of the wall.

“I will never sign another bill like this again. I’m not going to do it again.” — President Trump, after signing a spending bill that blocked any funding for a wall.

Today, eight months later, Trump is about to sign another spending bill that will give him no money for the wall.

Anyone want to bet me that he won’t?

So much for the world’s greatest negotiator.

Donald Trump is the commander in chief. He doesn’t need Congress’ approval to defend the nation’s borders.

But as long as his excuse for not building the wall is that Congress hasn’t appropriated money for it, why on earth would he sign a spending bill that doesn’t give it to him?

There is no tomorrow on this. Republicans are about to lose the House. It’s now or never.

We didn’t need someone to tell us how hard it is to get anything done in Washington. We knew that.

That’s why we hired a builder. We didn’t care what Trump’s position on the lira was. We didn’t care about Syria. We were just looking for the best contractor we could find so we would finally get a wall.

If we were talking about a golf course in Scotland, I think Trump could figure out how to get it done.

But instead of winning, we’re getting whining. We’re told it’s Congress’ fault for not giving Trump money to build the wall! The ACLU will sue! A judge will stop him! Blame Paul Ryan! (Possible Trump epitaph: Chuck wouldn’t let me!)

President Reagan bombed Libya in retaliation for two U.S. serviceman being killed by a bomb in a West Berlin discotheque — TWO!

But Trump thinks he needs the preapproval of Congress, the ACLU and a district court judge in Hawaii to do something about tens of thousands of Americans being killed every year by illegal alien heroin dealers, drunk drivers and straight-up murderers.

Reagan invaded Grenada because the country was becoming a Soviet client state. No Grenadian threatened to touch a hair on any American’s head. One wonders what Reagan’s reaction would have been to someone telling him, YOU CAN’T DO THAT! THE ACLU WILL SUE!

If Reagan had Trump’s advisers, we’d be speaking Russian.

The ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the other anti-American groups opposing Trump on immigration were the very same groups that opposed Reagan. They would have been happy if the U.S.S.R. had nuked this country.

Sadly for them, Reagan kept his promises, and we won the Cold War. So now the back-up plan is to destroy our country by flooding it with the Third World.

We needed Reagan and got P.T. Barnum instead.

Trump Ignored Defense Secretary on Syria
10:22 pm

“President Trump’s decision to abruptly withdraw troops from Syria is a clear rebuke to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, the last remaining member of a retinue of military men Trump once fondly called ‘my generals,'” the Washington Post reports.

“Mattis had argued that the counterterrorism mission in Syria is not over and that the small U.S. presence in Syria should remain… The Pentagon chief also had tried to explain to Trump that there would be more chaos in the region and future problems for the United States if the troops leave.”

A senior administration official told CNN that Trump’s decision to withdraw troops is “a mistake of colossal proportions and the President fails to see how it will endanger our country.”

Everybody said...

If your so smart why aren't you president?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Scott, I rarely if ever agree with Ann Coulter. But she is saying the things that you deny every fucking day.

Evidently, Trump knew he could bomb an innocent country based on false information about the Syrian government using nerve gas in April 2018. (Actual reason: Ivanka cried.) No less than the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons spent months testing the bodies allegedly killed by nerve gas. Conclusion: No nerve gas.

But we’re supposed to believe that Trump doesn’t realize that he’s also allowed to defend the citizens of this country. Does he know he’s president?

Even if noted constitutional law scholar Jared Kushner has convinced Trump that he needs congressional approval before he’s allowed to repel invaders at our border — but doesn’t need Congress to bomb an innocent country because Ivanka cried — the president could order the troops to invade Mexico and build the wall 10 yards in.

But all we get are bombastic tweets and useless half-measures. The conservative media have been excitedly reporting that Obama put illegal alien kids in cages too! Obama used tear gas on the invaders too!

Yes, exactly — and none of that worked. That’s why we voted for the guy who promised to build a wall.

Unlike the president, we knew that the deluge of poor people flooding our country would never stop until we had an impenetrable border.

And whatever happened to that executive order on anchor babies? Is Trump “trying” to sign that, too? Maybe he got writer’s cramp.

Trump also promised to deport illegals — even the ones Democrats have given cute names to.

“We’re always talking about ‘Dreamers’ for other people. I want the children that are growing up in the United States to be dreamers, also. They’re not dreaming right now.” — Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump

“The executive order [on ‘Dreamers’] gets rescinded.” — Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump

Is it Paul Ryan’s fault that Trump did a 180 on “Dreamers,” called them “INCREDIBLE KIDS” and tried to give them amnesty?

Every day that Trump does not keep his promises on immigration, thousands of immigrants turn 18 and start block voting for the Democrats, while thousands of traditional Americans die off.

Florida and Texas are about five years away from turning solid blue. Trump was our last chance. After this, the country is never going to elect a Republican president again.

So, the next time you watch one of those election night videos, remember: If Trump doesn’t keep his immigration promises, Hillary might as well have won.

Trump will leave no legacy whatsoever. Without a wall, he will only be remembered as a small cartoon figure who briefly inflamed and amused the rabble.

I understand that the President should not be attacking the institutions of the United States. The Department of Justice, the Secretary of State I don't know more about ISIS than the Pentagon and the generals. "I know more about ISIS than the generals".

I could write a book on the things I know more than the President.

Everybody said...

James said...

Especially since Mexico will pay for it, although they keep saying they will not.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

We don't need a wall. We can set up a system to help save lives and still keep the border secure. I have been thinking about a new Ellis Island on the border. We let hundreds of thousands into the country from Europe and other countries. Valid immigration laws can be used to keep the border secure and safe.

Not all of them are murderers and rapists like Trump said . They are seeking asylum from their criminal countries.

On the 20th anniversary of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment, former Special Prosecutor Ken Starr joins Ari Melber. Starr tells Ari Melber he still believes a sitting president can be indicted if there’s enough evidence and that Bob Mueller is “a person of complete integrity” who should be allowed to “do his job.” Ari Melber questions Starr on his own Clinton impeachment recommendation to Congress, after Starr notes that “impeachment is hell” for the public to go through. Starr also notes that “there’s no question” President Trump has lied about his personal life and says it is “unwise, uncalled for” and “extraordinarily unseemly” for Trump to call a cooperating witness a “rat.”

WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday, as expected, but forecast fewer rate hikes next year and signaled its tightening cycle is nearing an end in the face of financial market volatility and slowing global growth.

The central bank said the U.S. economy has been growing at a strong rate and the job market has continued to improve. It noted that "some" further gradual rate hikes would be needed, a subtle change that suggested it was preparing to stop raising borrowing costs.

In a statement issued after the end of its last policy meeting of the year, the Fed said risks to the economy were "roughly balanced" but that it would "continue to monitor global economic and financial developments and assess their implications for the economic outlook."

The rate hike, the fourth of 2018, lifted the target range for the Fed's benchmark overnight lending rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 2.25 percent to 2.50 percent.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is due to hold a news conference at 2:30 p.m. EST (1930 GMT).

The decision to raise borrowing costs again is likely to anger U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly attacked the central bank's tightening this year as damaging to the economy.

The Fed has been raising rates to reduce the boost that monetary policy gives to the economy, which is growing faster than what central bank policymakers view as a sustainable rate.

There are worries, however, that the economy could enter choppy waters next year as the fiscal boost from the Trump administration's spending and $1.5 trillion tax cut package fades and the global economy slows.

The Fed also made a widely expected technical adjustment, raising the rate it pays on banks' excess reserves by just 20 basis points to give it better control over the policy rate and keep it within the targeted range.
