Did Trump cave?

Certainly it appears that he gave up way more than he got. He provides the Short term reopening of the Government and basically got no money for his border barrier in return. At least in the short term, he blinked. He caved.

What he announced is that a group of Congresspeople (both House and Senate, both Republicans and Democrats) will set up a conference that will work with the Department of Homeland Security and Border Control Agency to come up with a plan of action.

He does know that the Department of Homeland Security and Border Control Agency will back him on the border barrier. There is no question that the "experts" in border control will be in support of the barrier.

So Trump blinked. But he now puts the pressure on Pelosi and the Democrats (who kept promising the Americans that they would be willing to negotiate once the Government is up and running) to follow through on their promise to negotiate.

The question becomes what happens in this committee and what happens over the next three weeks. If we come to the end of the three weeks, and we are no closer to an overall agreement on a permanent end to the shutdown... then what happens?

Unless I am mistaken, there will not be a second shutdown. I just don't think that anyone will have the stomach for that. Trump declares a national emergency? Looks to find another way to fund the wall? These options seems way more plausible than another shut down.

Either way... this is gambit that the President is likely going to lose. His best chance of winning was to stick to his guns now. In a better system of government, where you could trust that members of both Parties would actually negotiate in good faith, then this might be a good move.

But we all know that the Democrats asking for the Government to reopen before negotiating, was not an honest proposal. They are not going to negotiate in good faith, as they likely believe (as I do) that there will be no second shutdown. Pelosi and gang knew that if they got the temporary reopening, that they would ultimately prevail.

Unless Trump has something else up his sleeve, he got rolled. Likely by members of his own Party who pretend to have more faith in the process than they should. No wall. No reelection. Blue wave in 2020. Pretty straight forward.

Public disapproval of President Trump has swelled five points to 58 percent over three months as a majority of Americans continue to hold him and congressional Republicans most responsible for the partial federal government shutdown, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

In addition, more than 1 in 5 Americans say they have been personally inconvenienced by the record-long shutdown, which reached the five-week mark Friday amid reports of turmoil at airports, slowdowns at the Internal Revenue Service and growing public pain as 800,000 federal workers, and many government contractors, go without pay.

Congressional leaders were scrambling Friday to break the impasse after a pair of legislative bills to reopen the government were defeated in the Senate a day earlier.

Trump Finally Agrees to End Shutdown

President Trump “announced a deal with congressional leaders to temporarily reopen the government while talks continue on his demand for border wall money, handing Democrats a major victory in the protracted standoff,” the Washington Post reports.

“The pact would reopen shuttered government departments for three weeks while leaving the issue of $5.7 billion for the U.S.-Mexico border wall to further talks.

“If a ‘fair deal’ does not emerge by Feb. 15,
Trump said, there could be another government shutdown*
or he could declare a national emergency**
a move that could allow him to direct the military to build the wall without congressional consent. Such an action would
likely face an immediate legal challenge.”'

Hours later, FBI agents would be knocking on his door and he'd be heading to a courtroom to face an indictment on a myriad of charges from special counsel Robert Mueller.

CNN compiled Stone's activities from the 72 hours before his arrest based on a review of his social media accounts and media appearances. He spent most of that time pushing the same message -- his former colleagues and acquaintances who had spoken to special counsel Robert Mueller were liars and traitors, he was an innocent man and that he was standing behind President Donald Trump.

The dealmaker caved.

President Donald Trump on Friday sought a meek end to the government shutdown he famously said he would own, on terms Democrats demanded from the start.

It was a stark acknowledgment of political failure by a president who claims to never back down. The border wall he built his campaign on is all but gone as a realistic prospect now – crumbling along with the façade that Trump’s sheer force of personality could bend Washington to his will.

Appearing in the White House Rose Garden Friday afternoon, Trump said he was celebrating “a deal.” But it was telling that he stood alone, as he surrendered by accepting the same offer Democrats put on the table weeks ago.

The President just signed the bill that had already passed unopposed. Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter have exploded.

Late Friday night, President Donald Trump signed a bill passed by Congress that officially reopens the federal government for three weeks while lawmakers negotiate border security funding with the president -- ending the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

"I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said earlier on Friday, in a surprise development that thrilled hundreds of thousands of federal workers that have been toiling without pay for more than a month.

The bill passed by Congress, sources told ABC News, includes no funding for the president’s long-sought border wall.

The president said earlier on Friday that while has decided not to declare a national emergency at this time, he has the ability to do so if members of Congress do not work on a deal for border security.

Congress sent legislation to President Trump on Friday to temporarily reopen the government, ending the longest shutdown in history while handing Democrats a major political victory in the protracted standoff.
The House unanimously approved the bill hours after the Senate backed the measure by voice vote. Trump was expected to sign the bill into law.
The pact, announced by Trump from the Rose Garden at the White House, would reopen shuttered government departments for three weeks while leaving the issue of $5.7 billion for a U.S.-Mexico border wall to further talks.
Trump said that a congressional conference committee would spend the next three weeks working in a bipartisan fashion to come up with a border security package.

This is the same bill that could have been signed and no shut down at a cost of 200 million a day.

If you were elected president after decades of politicians doing nothing about the millions of illegals pouring into our country every year, committing crimes, dealing drugs, driving drunk, molesting children and killing Americans like Kate Steinle, and your central campaign promise — repeated every day — was to build a wall, wouldn’t you have spent the entirety of your transition period working on getting it done?
Wouldn’t you have been building prototypes, developing relationships with key congressional allies and talking to military leaders about using the Seabees or the Army Corps of Engineers to build the wall?

Wouldn’t you skip the inauguration and take the oath of office in San Diego so you could get started on supervising wall construction immediately after putting your hand on the Bible and being sworn in as the leader of the free world?

You would if you meant it.

Well, Donald Trump didn’t do that.

OK, sure he could have taken the oath in D.C., gone to a few balls, then started the wall on day two of his presidency. But he didn’t do that either.

Maybe I’m a literalist. A zealot. When people kept telling me to be patient — the wall is coming! — I nursed a private hope that I was wrong, and they were right.

It is now crystal clear that one of two things is true: Either Trump never intended to build the wall and was scamming voters all along, or he has no idea how to get it done and zero interest in finding out.

He sacrifices every opportunity to make the wall happen.

For two years, Trump pretended to believe the president of the United States needs express authorization from Congress to defend the nation’s borders and blamed the Republican majority for not “funding” the wall.

In a few weeks, he’ll start blaming the Democratic House.

Last week — several whole days ago — Trump said over and over again that he would shut down the government if he didn’t get funding for the wall — the precise thing he claims he needs. “We need border security. The wall is a part of border security,” he said. “If we don’t have border security, we’ll shut down the government.”

Trump wore the shutdown over the wall as a badge of honor: “You want to know something? OK, you want to put that on me. I’ll take it. You know what I’ll say? Yes, if we don’t get what we want … I will shut down the government. Absolutely.”

One week later, The Drudge Report:

WALL FUNDING OFF TABLE

In other words, Trump is doing exactly what I feared he would do in the worst conceivable way. He’s not building the wall, while making ridiculous promises right up until the second before he folds.

The Washington Post loves to find the one crazy, trailer park lady who supports Trump because she’s had religious ecstasies about him, but most people who voted for him did so with a boatload of qualms.

The basic factory setting on the perception of Trump is: gigantic douchebag. This is a man who manufactured fake Time magazine covers featuring himself with the headline, “Donald Trump: The ‘Apprentice’ is a television smash!” so that he could put framed copies of it on the walls of his clubs.

His business is convincing people with lowbrow taste to give him their money.

He’s a vulgar publicity hound who used to call reporters in a fake voice and pretend to be his own PR agent, “John Miller” or “John Barron,” so he could brag that actresses wanted to date him.

On one “Apprentice” episode, the reward for the winning team was: to see Trump’s apartment. Not to eat there or spend the night. They got to see it. “As a little treat,” he said, “you’re gonna see the nicest apartment in New York City.” He added: “I show this apartment to very few people. Presidents, kings …”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

It’s not as if a majority of his voters weren’t clear-eyed about what kind of man he is. If anything, Trump’s vulgar narcissism made his vow to build a wall more believable. Respectable politicians had made similar promises over the years — and they always betrayed the voters. Maybe it took a sociopath to ignore elite opinion and keep his word.

On the basis of his self-interest alone, he must know that if he doesn’t build the wall, he has zero chance of being re-elected and a 100 percent chance of being utterly humiliated.

But when Trump is alone with Ivanka, they seem to agree that the wall has nothing to do with it. The people just love him for who he is! In a country of 320 million people, I’m sure there are some, but I have yet to meet a person who said, Yeah, I don’t really care about immigration or trade, I just love his personality!

What else were we going to do? He was the only one talking sense. Unfortunately, that’s all he does: talk. He’s not interested in doing anything that would require the tiniest bit of effort.

In the end, we’ll probably find out “wall” was Trump’s “safe word” with Stormy Daniels. It’s just something he blurts out whenever he’s in trouble.

He’s in trouble now. As absurd as the Russia nonsense is, the details about Trump’s sleazy associates, the porn star, the Playboy playmate and his seedy business practices leave his supporters feeling queasy, even if he hasn’t committed any crimes.

Instead of joining a fight that will make his most ardent supporters cringe no matter how it comes out, why not choose a battleground where he’s guaranteed a win? If Trump used the military to build the wall — actually build it, not keep telling us he’s going to build it — the Democrats will go mad.

They’ll hold impeachment hearings, file a million lawsuits, produce weeping children reading from phony scripts written by immigrant rights groups — and Trump will win. The public will support Trump overwhelmingly, and the left will be forced to keep reminding voters why they hate Democrats.

Instead, what he’s doing now absolutely guarantees that the next president will be a Democrat and, given today’s Democratic Party, that president will be Kamala Harris.

Chris Hayes, on Friday night's 'All In':
In a presidency that's had its fair share of low points, both morally and politically, today has to be one of the worst: The president backing down in total humiliation from a fight that he himself started, conceding to end the record-setting government shutdown that he engineered to extort funding for his border wall. In the face of united opposition from Democrats in Congress, and the beginnings of a full-scale labor uprising within the nation's aviation system, the president and his party accepted defeat, agreeing to reopen the government without wall funding.

After the longest shutdown in U.S. history, hundreds of thousands of federal workers will now be able to return to their jobs and collect back pay for their unpaid work. And that includes the FBI agents who showed up Friday morning in military-style gear, before the break of dawn, to arrest the president's oldest political adviser, Roger Stone, at his home in Florida.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted Stone on 7 counts of lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering in an attempted cover-up of Stone's efforts to get dirt on Hillary Clinton from Wikileaks in 2016.

From today's Times

What a debacle President Trump’s shutdown proved to be — what a toddler’s pageant of foot-stomping and incompetence, of vainglory and self-defeat. Mr. Trump tormented public servants and citizens and wounded the country, and, in conceding on Friday after holding the government hostage for 35 days, could claim to have achieved nothing.

He succeeded only in exposing the emptiness of his bully’s bravado, of his “I alone can fix it” posturing. Once upon a time, Mr. Trump promised that Mexico would pay for a wall. He instead made all Americans pay for a partisan fantasy.

Maybe you want a wall. Can you possibly argue that Mr. Trump’s shutdown strategy advanced your cause? He made the right decision on Friday — to sign a bill reopening the government through Feb. 15, giving lawmakers time to reach a permanent deal. But he could have had this same outcome without a shutdown. He ultimately agreed to the sort of bill that Democrats have been pitching for weeks — one that contains not one dollar in wall funding.

In his announcement, the president struggled to obscure his failure with yet another rambling infomercial about the glory of walls. “No matter where you go, they work,” he said (raising the question of how you can get there if, in fact, there’s a wall in your way). He had nothing of substance to offer beyond the usual specious claims that only his wall can end the border flood of drugs, crime and migrant women who have been duct-taped and stuffed into vans by human traffickers. To repeat: Fewer border-crossing apprehensions were made in 2017 than at any time since 1971; drugs are overwhelmingly smuggled through established points of entry; and the only crisis at the border is a humanitarian one, of people fleeing violence and seeking asylum — again, mostly at established points of entry — under international law

The lies keep piling up and you all keep slurping away..

The claim that a wall would lead to a huge decrease in crime is not supported by statistics. Construction of a wall would not suddenly remove millions of undocumented immigrants already in the United States, and there is no evidence of a causal link between immigration and crime. As for drugs, 90 percent of heroin coming into the United States enters through the southern border. But it is mostly smuggled through legal ports of entry and not wall-less areas. Most Fentanyl arrives in the United States from China through the mail.

New York has pass one of the most ghoulish abortion laws in the world. Include being able the kill the baby up to the moment of birth.

According to promimate OB/Gym there is not medical reason ever to abort a baby in the third trimester. Deliver the baby but not abort.

The only diffrence between delivery and abortion in the tri-mester is that you kill the baby with a leather injection prior to delivering.

In fact if they already sold the baby for parts then they take particular they deliver the dead baby intact.

Cuomo is going to burn in hell.

And as far as you link is concern, the author never gets around to the disputing the contention that therapeutically, there is no diffrence to the mother if the baby is delivered or aborted in the third trimester.

There's a big diffrence for the baby however.

Cuomo is going to burn in hell.

cuomo has made a political calculation. he's willing to accept a number of future democrat voters dying via abortion because he has an endless stream of democrats streaming across the southern border.

this is exactly why democrats don't care about border security. they never have and they never will.

It may not be the guarentee slam dunk the Democrats hope for. We have a large Latin America community down here (or I should say communities). In talking to people who come from socialist countries like Venezuela, Peru, Guatemala they really dispise socilisim.

It was these communities along with the Cuban Americans and to a surprising degree Puerto Ricans who elected Rick Scott as senator and Ron DeSantis as governor.

A couple of other things to note about these communities:

1. The dispise abortion to an overwhelming degree.
2. The are not only against same sex marriage, they find the whole concept incomprehensible.
3. They find the whole transgender debate incomprehensible as well.
4. They dispise the whole idea of wealth redistribution.
5. They are primarily Catholic although there is a growing evangelical community.
6. They for a high quality low cost health system but don't particulary care about the details.
7. They love the freedom and the possibilities this country has to offer for those that work.
8. They are suspecious of government because without fail, the government in the countries they came from were corrupt and incompetent.

indeed, but they've placed their bet and i'm convinced the odds do favor them.

look at it this way - if democrats were convinced that illegals would definitely vote republican, we'd have a 100 ft. wall, a razor wire moat, a mine field, and armed drones flying up and down the border shooting anything that moved.

Trump’s Retreat Bewilders Allies
January 25, 2019 at 10:54 pm EST

A former White House official tells Politico that President Trump’s core supporters and former aides are “furious” and “melting down.”

“Bewildered by his decision to accept a deal without funding for a wall on the southern border — not even the ‘down payment’ the White House had requested a day earlier — some of his most loyal supporters fretted that Trump was in danger of losing his fervent base that has fueled his presidency.”

Said another former White House aide: “He allowed 35 days of chaos and hurt all for nothing.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports Fox Business host Lou Dobbs, who described himself as an “an animated, energetic supporter of this president,” conceded that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “has just whipped the president of the United States.”

JOHN PODESTA SPEAKS OF
Roger Stone’s Time In the Barrel
January 25, 2019 at 10:29 pm EST

John Podesta:
“Despite my Italian roots, vengeance doesn’t run deep in my veins. But I admit I smiled when Roger Stone’s arrest was announced Friday morning.

“To give some context: On Oct. 7, 2016, WikiLeaks began leaking emails from my personal inbox that had been hacked by Russian intelligence operatives. A few days earlier, Stone — a longtime Republican operative and close confidant of then-candidate Donald Trump — had mysteriously predicted that the organization would reveal damaging information about the Clinton campaign. And weeks before that, he’d even tweeted: ‘Trust me, it will soon be Podesta’s time in the barrel.'

“Stone’s connection with and boasting about WikiLeaks during the campaign has always been fishy. But thanks to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation, the truth is finally coming out.”

AND NOW THIS:

Trump Campaign Had 100+ Contacts with Russians
January 26, 2019 at 8:12 am EST

“During the 2016 presidential campaign and transition, Donald Trump and at least 17 campaign officials and advisers had contacts with Russian nationals and WikiLeaks, or their intermediaries, a New York Times analysis has found. At least 10 other associates were told about interactions but did not have any themselves.

“Among these contacts are more than 100 in-person meetings, phone calls, text messages, emails and private messages on Twitter. Mr. Trump and his campaign repeatedly denied having such contacts with Russians during the 2016 election.”

The White House Is a Mess
January 26, 2019 at 10:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

Playbook: “Everyone we speak to in the administration and on Capitol Hill says that since Mick Mulvaney took over as chief of staff, the process in the White House has gone to hell. The shutdown became a Jared Kushner show, and the people whose job it is to deal with policy and politics were sidelined. Of course, Kushner is the president’s son in law, and his camp believes he was empowered to do this by the president.”

A Wounded Trump Faces Uncertain 2020 Prospects
January 26, 2019 at 10:24 am EST

“President Trump’s defeat in his border-wall standoff with Congress has clouded his already perilous path to a second term in 2020, undercutting Mr. Trump’s cherished image as a forceful leader and deft negotiator, and emboldening alike his Democratic challengers and Republican dissenters who hope to block his re-election,” the New York Times reports.

“The longest government shutdown in history inflicted severe political damage on the president, dragging down his poll numbers even among Republicans and stirring concern among party leaders about his ability to navigate the next two years of divided government. Mr. Trump, close associates acknowledge, appears without a plan for mounting a strong campaign in 2020, or for persuading the majority of Americans who view him negatively to give him another chance.”
