Drip, drip, drip....

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said “there’s room for a conversation” about whether certain barriers might be the best security strategy in some places along the border.
“I have a record of supporting barriers in the past, so I’m not running from that,” Thompson said Wednesday. “I just think that over time you have to develop and see whether or not there are ways of accomplishing what you want other than barriers, if it can be accomplished. Some places, barriers are probably the optimal.”
_______

“Smart border security is not overly reliant on physical barriers, which the Trump administration has failed to demonstrate are cost effective compared to better technology and more personnel,” House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) said at the conference meeting.
When asked afterward if physical barriers are off the table, Lowey was noncommittal. “At this point, I’m certainly not going to give an answer to that question,” she told reporters.

this is the stupidest fucking thing i've read today.

it's a given that border security - "smart" or not - is not overly reliant on physical barriers.

it's also a given that a barrier is, over time, exponentially more cost effective than technology and additional personnel. technology and people cost $$$ on an ongoing basis. technology in replacement and upgrades, and personnel in salaries and benefits. both of which are subject to ongoing appropriation battles.

you build a fucking wall, you build it once, it's paid for and done.

you know, i get the fact that democrats are going to fight this and fuck this up every step of the way. but the least they could do is come up with a compelling and intelligent argument in the meantime.

Well Denny - the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection has a budget. I am fairly certain that nobody is looking to cut off the budget. The Budget that the Democrats are offering is a whopping half billion over last year's budget. But of course, the argument is not about the "working budget".

The argument is about the supplemental amounts that the President and GOP has been asking for (which include $5.7 billion for construction of the barrier) - all that would be on top of the overall "budget".

What the Democrats are countering with is:

$675 million for scanners at points of entry
$502 million for "humanitarian concerns at the border" such as food and medical care
$400 million in border security technology, 1,000 new customs agents
$156.7 million for new boats, planes and sensor
____________________________

$1.733 billion

and they are asking for more "customs agents" rather than "border security agents". The former works more in helping people "into" the country, while the former works to keep people from illegally getting into the country.

Even the humanitarian amounts are less than what the President/GOP are asking for.

Trump is surrendering to ISIS

WASHINGTON — A draft Pentagon report warns that without continued pressure, ISIS could regain territory in six to 12 months, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the draft.

The finding is in a draft of the Department of Defense Inspector General Quarterly Report about Operation Inherent Resolve that is expected to be released early next week. The report draws on information from the U.S. military, U.S. government agencies, and open source reports

Even the Republican controlled senate Intelligence committee has been investigating the calls about the infamous Gold Tower meeting.
Investigators on the Senate Intelligence Committee have learned the identities of three blocked phone calls with Donald Trump Jr just before and after the now-infamous Trump Tower meeting on June 9, 2016, three sources familiar with the calls told ABC News.

The calls to blocked numbers, which came on June 6, and after the meeting on June 9, were between Trump Jr.’s cell phone and two family friends -- NASCAR CEO Brian France and real estate developer Howard Lorber, according to the sources.

Both men have close ties to President Donald Trump and actively supported his campaign during the 2016 election.

When France announced his endorsement of Trump’s candidacy – a decision that drew backlash from the professional driving community – the campaign released a statement, penned by France, in which he said Trump’s “leadership and strength are desperately needed.” At a campaign rally in February 2016, France appeared beside Trump, who he said he had known for more than 20 years, and lauded him as a “winner.

When Obama took office the economy was losing 80,000 jobs per month. The DJOI was about 7,000. Trump inherited a strong economy. Those are the facts kput'z.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This is a segment of the President's interview with "failing" New York Times.

He cannot be educated.

Mr. Trump has been considering an emergency declaration to spend money on a wall even without congressional approval, an action that would most likely draw a court challenge, and he said Ms. Pelosi would not be able to stop him. “I’ll continue to build the wall, and we’ll get the wall finished,” he said. “Now whether or not I declare a national emergency — that you’ll see.”

On another point of contention, the president noted that he had summoned his intelligence chiefs, including Dan Coats, the national intelligence director, and Gina Haspel, the C.I.A. director, to the White House because he had heard they contradicted his foreign policy during testimony to Congress this week. Mr. Coats and the others told lawmakers that North Korea was unlikely to give up its nuclear arsenal, that Iran has not restarted work to build one and that the Islamic State was not defeated, all assessments that clash with the president’s worldview.

But Mr. Trump said the intelligence chiefs told him their presentation was misinterpreted. “They said, ‘Sir, our testimony was totally mischaracterized,’” Mr. Trump said. “I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ And when you read their testimony and you read their statements, it was mischaracterized by the media.”

Mr. Trump said he has likewise received reassurances from Mr. Rosenstein, who until Attorney General Jeff Sessions was fired in November was overseeing the Russia investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

“He told the attorneys that I’m not a subject, I’m not a target,” Mr. Trump said. Asked if that also covered the separate investigation by federal prosecutors in New York, he said, “I don’t know about that.”

But he denied having anything to do with Mr. Stone’s involvement with WikiLeaks, which during the campaign posted online Democratic emails that were stolen by Russian intelligence services. He expressed sympathy for Mr. Stone for having to endure a raid by heavily armed F.B.I. agents that resulted in his arrest last week.

“I’ve always liked — I like Roger, he’s a character,” Mr. Trump said, insisting that the F.B.I. agents charging “a house like they did at six o’clock in the morning. I think that was a very sad thing for this country.”

Mr. Trump said he had played no role in directing White House officials to arrange for his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, to receive a top-secret clearance. Mr. Kushner’s top-secret clearance application was rejected at least once, after concerns were raised by the F.B.I. about his foreign contacts. The C.I.A., which also raised concerns about Mr. Kushner’s foreign contacts, has continued to deny him access to “sensitive compartmentalized information.”

He tweeted earlier that the North Koreans have given up their nuclear weapons program.

Dan Coats said yesterday that the Korean government has not discontinued their nuclear weapons program.

He's not fit to be the President of the United States.

I will provide the link.

since the Great Recession. Under President Barack Obama, the economy averaged an additional 109,000 jobs per month, and the administration oversaw 75 consecutive months of growth, the longest streak of total job growth on record.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The U.S. added 2.2 million jobs in 2016, on top of 2.7 million jobs gained in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, there has been growth of at least 2 million jobs in each of President Obama’s last six years in office, and there have been 75 consecutive months of jobs growth, a modern-day record.

As for overall net jobs growth, the White House has frequently cited the fact that “more than 15 million new jobs” have been created under Obama’s watch. That figure is only accurate if you look at the number of jobs added since the post-recession economy began picking up steam, in 2010. Obama, of course, became president in January 2009, when the global economy was collapsing and hundreds of thousands of American workers were losing their jobs each month.

When you compare the number of jobs when Obama took office with the total now, the difference is a net gain of 11.3 million jobs. That’s good—vastly better than the addition of 2.3 million jobs during George W. Bush’s eight years in office—but not as strong as jobs growth when Ronald Reagan (15.9 million jobs) or Bill Clinton (22.9 million jobs) was president.

(Among roughly five thousand other thoughts I have is this one: Hasn’t this Obama guy had enough time to fix the economy already?) We head to a pub to grab a bite and drown our sorrows, and, in one of the nicest gestures I can recall, the owner, upon hearing that we’d all lost our jobs, hands each of us an envelope with a $10 gift certificate inside.

Our sorry lot is not alone: Nearly 600,000 American workers lose their jobs in January, the most in a month since December 1974.

At the end of the month, the unemployment rate is measured to be 7.6%.

"ISIS and al-Qaida have yet to be defeated. And American national security interests require continued commitment to our missions," McConnell said on the Senate floor.

Republican senators have been put in the uncomfortable position of chiding the childish president while simultaneously appearing to support him. It is a reflection of both Trump's unorthodox beliefs and his enduring popularity with the Republican base they both share.

Sen. James Risch, R-Idaho, the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that what the president had declared was just a "shorter" version of what the Senate was now passing.

Asked by NPR whether the resolution was a rebuke of the president, Risch said, "No, it isn't, because it's not."

Impeachment, in fact, is a vital protection against the dangers a president like Trump poses. And, crucially, many of its benefits—to the political health of the country, to the stability of the constitutional system—accrue irrespective of its ultimate result. Impeachment is a process, not an outcome, a rule-bound procedure for investigating a president, considering evidence, formulating charges, and deciding whether to continue on to trial.

The fight over whether Trump should be removed from office is already raging, and distorting everything it touches. Activists are radicalizing in opposition to a president they regard as dangerous. Within the government, unelected bureaucrats who believe the president is acting unlawfully are disregarding his orders, or working to subvert his agenda. By denying the debate its proper outlet, Congress has succeeded only in intensifying its pressures. And by declining to tackle the question head-on, it has deprived itself of its primary means of reining in the chief executive.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Congress can’t outsource its responsibilities to federal prosecutors. No one knows when Mueller’s report will arrive, what form it will take, or what it will say. Even if Mueller alleges criminal misconduct on the part of the president, under Justice Department guidelines, a sitting president cannot be indicted. Nor will the host of congressional hearings fulfill that branch’s obligations. The view they will offer of his conduct will be both limited and scattershot, focused on discrete acts. Only by authorizing a dedicated impeachment inquiry can the House begin to assemble disparate allegations into a coherent picture, forcing lawmakers to consider both whether specific charges are true and whether the president’s abuses of his power justify his removal.

Trump’s bipartisan critics are not merely arguing that he has dishonored the presidency. The most serious charge is that he is attacking the bedrock of American democracy.
